Description of Work: Called Mike Roman about doing a detailed bath remodel. He said that he was going out to a meeting and would call me back in an hour or so. I gave him two numbers to call me back at and never heard from him. That was over a week ago. The word "unprofessional" comes to mind.

Response from Paladin Home
[member name removed]. I sincerely apologize for not calling you back. I took your contact information as I was going into a client meeting. After leaving the meeting I discovered I no longer had your contact information. I tried my best to find your number, but unfortunately I could not. They were lost. As a small business owner I wear alot of hats. Understandably, a great deal of my focus goes into the critical processes or technical requirements of the projects I get involved with. I also understand that it is also important to gain new clients to keep the business moving forward. I definately value every lead, referral, or inquiry into our services. I apologize if you felt that I did not take your inquiry seriously. We do provide the best possible service possible to our clients. We are very good at what we do and take it very seriously. The "A" ratings and possitive reviews from our clients on Angies List are "hard earned". I value your feedback about this experience and will "take it to heart" so that we can improve in this area. If you are still interested in an estimate, please feel free to contact me at 510-205-3856.

I?m extremely happy with all the beautiful, beautiful work Mike Roman has done and all the patience he has shown me. Although I promised him there would be no scope creep, there was and Mike was more than fair, too fair, sorting that out with me. Mike has great design sense and I relied on him extensively to help me make choices and decisions after experiencing analysis paralysis on so many occasions. He encouraged me to preserve period details wherever possible and to use material that I liked. I was a bit headstrong at first, wanting a more modern style, but he has made me a true believer out of me. Thankfully he steered me away from the ?racing stripe?. He suggested ways to incorporate modern amenities keeping within the period details of the home. Mike and his team are very pleasant and professional and went out of their way to clear all dust and clean-up each evening before leaving, even though I was not living there during the construction; this alone impressed me. When I showed up at the job site, he would always take time to explain the work that had been done and the methodologies used. I?m a very visual person so Mike went above and beyond to ?rig something up? (my words and requests) to show me what something would look like before moving ahead. He?s a perfectionist and the workmanship and artistic quality speaks for itself. He stuck to the project timeline as promised, was very responsive, flexible and his workmanship is obvious to everyone. I show off his work every chance I get; lots of colleagues, friends and neighbors want to see the finished product. I believe Mike Roman?s background and considerable knowledge of construction and remodeling, as well as his design sense, uniquely qualifies him to provide the level of skill and professionalism you desire for your remodel. It?s been a pleasure and privilege working with Mike. I highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Mike Roman, Paladin Home, and his skillful team expertly remodeled the kitchen and bath of my 1938 Art Deco duplex. I wouldn’t think of hiring anyone but Mike to remodel the second unit when the time comes. I’ve had experience renovating five previous homes (my contractor husband did the work) so I had enough knowledge to recognize, after our first meeting that Mike was the person for my Deco duplex project. Mike encouraged me to interview several others; I interviewed one, but didn’t look further before hiring Mike to do the remodel. He tore the kitchen and bath down to the studs, all the while preserving the period details. He removed a wall between the kitchen and living room to create an open concept living space and installed new headers where necessary. Mike’s team joined the walls together so well that you cannot see where the new ends and the original begin. Mike moved the kitchen sink and appliances to better and more functional locations, installed kitchen cabinets and suggested soapstone for the countertops to enhance the period style of subway tile and carrera marble chosen for the backsplash. His lighting plan and layout for the kitchen works very well. He borrowed a bit of space from the kitchen to enlarge a very tiny bathroom. He built a beautiful double shower with a large niche and bench. The tile work is superb and his tile setter is fastidious. Mike’s custom designed Art Deco style mirror was described by me, the glass company and their installer as “a work of art, not a mirror”. Mike and his team seamlessly ran and installed all the electrical wiring and plumbing required to update the original 1938 work. Mike and his skillful team exceeded my expectations with every phase of the renovation.

Plain and simple, Mike and his team do great work and we are very happy with the results. They show up when they say they are going to show up, they are conscientious about their work, and they are respectul of their surroundings (i.e., your home). Mike is very attentive to details and will respond long after the project is over to questions that may arise. He's serious on the job, but he also has a sense of humor, which is a nice plus. As with any project, there were a few surprises, but they worked themselves out to everyone's satisfaction. Based on the quality work he did for us, our neighbors ended up having him do their bathroom remodel as well, and another neighbor may also have him do work, so we are waiting for the city to change the name of our street to Mike Roman Way.
Description of Work: Mike completely remodeled the bathroom(s) in our 1922 bungalow, turning two very small, adjacent bathrooms into a single larger and much more usable one. In the process, we flipped around the door to a hallway closet so it opened into a bedroom.

I can't say enough about Mike. What struck me from the first time I met him was his passiveness and ability to think through a problem. He walked in my bathroom, tilted 45 degrees and just began to think through the problem. Our bathroom is very unique, as we're in a brick house. The level of consideration and thought that was put into this job was incredible. He was patient and professional throughout, even when I wanted to use a subcontractor of my own. If the price seems high - it is because you're geting the best quality. Mike handled the city with no problems, was overly courteous about dust and tracking in the house, and has some fantastic subcontractors at his disposal. The paint job he performed was stunning. I consider Mike a friend after this process and look forward to engaging him on the kitchen in the near future. Go with Mike - he'll do you right.
Description of Work: Mike redid our bathroom, top to bottom. He gutted existing walls, reframed the support beams in the ceiling, installed pony walls, installed cabinetry, ran plumbing, built tub supports, electrical, sealants, installed toilets and sinks, installed pony walls, lighting, installed a ceiling speaker, painting, new trimming, new roof, everything.

At the strong recommendation of designer Agelise Karol we asked Mike to bid the kitchen remodel last summer 2011, and he sounded very reasonable. After many changes he came back in the Spring 2012 he came out, but by then he was booked too far out for us. I liked him.
Description of Work: He visited twice regarding our kitchen remodel, and made very competitive bid his first visit.

This was the second project in which I used Paladin Home. I needed to refresh a kitchen and bath for rental in a traditional 20's duplex. I wasn't interested in creating completely new rooms as I wished to maintain the character of the building. I knew that Mike Roman was my man. He worked with me on each aspect of the design. I am very knowledgeable as to product and design, but my building/electrical/plumbing skills are nil and Mike guided me through the process and made fantastic suggestions. We were able to work together and solve issues on the spot to both our satisfaction. His workers are extremely skilled (especially Avelio, a tiler from heaven), courteous and clean. The only thing that held up the project was myself, the indecisive painter/decorator. Best of all, Pippa, my insane terrier, loved Mike and his crew. What more could I ask for?

As a veteran remodeler, having remodeled at least 6 homes, I can say with experience that if I were ever to do another remodel, I would look no further than Mike Roman and Paladin Home. Mike and his team are the perfect mix-- they are true artisans. From tilework to painting to hanging of doors. What I appreciated most about Mike was his ability to problem-solve when something came up that was outside the architect's plans, and we ended up with a much better product because of his eye. I have a pretty strong personality and a keen design sense, and Mike wasn't afraid to ask key questions when I said I wanted something a certain way. As a result the overall design benefited. Every day when his crew came in, they came on time, they cleaned up beautifully, they were completely respectful, great with our kids and our pet. Mike kept within the time frame that he gave for the project. When I wanted add-ons to the project, Mike gave realistic estimates about what each add-on would mean in terms of time and cost. There was one mistake on the job: In my old house the floors have settled and nothing is entirely plumb, and when the bathroom was nearly finished, we realized that the ceiling did not look perfectly level. Once we realized how it looked, Mike did not hesitate to make it right-- he ripped out the ceiling and made the fix that was needed to make it work, at no extra charge. The outcome is a bathroom that functions beautifully and fits perfectly into the period of my home.
Description of Work: Permitted total gut and redo of a bathroom in our 1920's Berkeley home, complete with moving all major plumbing, new electrical and beautiful finishes.

Mike returned EVERY call, promptly. The final design was the result of a respectful and enjoyable collaboration. The workmanship is superb (I am a craftsperson and I notice the details). His employee was prompt and worked hard. Mike treated him respectfully. What more could one ask?
Description of Work: Complete bathroom remodel. In my old house, this included damaged joist and subfloor, fixing uneven walls, a mortar bed on the floor, new walls, stripping detail moldings that I wanted to keep, movement of plumbing of tub, floor and bath enclosure tiling, reworking of old door and lock, fixing old sash window that I wanted to keep, wainscotting/chairrail, painting, etc.

I got bids for the bathroom from one handyman and three licensed contractors. Paladin Home’s bid was the second highest, but Mike seemed the most knowledgeable about code and available quality products & fixtures. He also had many appealing suggestions re options for making this tiny bathroom more functional. And, bottom line, I felt a rapport with him that told me working with him would be easy and comfortable. I was right. Once I committed to completely remodeling the bathroom, I decided this was also the time to take care of some other work I’d wanted to do for a long time: removing the kitchen wallpaper and repairing some sagging ceiling tiles in a bedroom. That expanded into removing/replacing the bedroom ceiling and shoring up the sagging rafters that caused the ceiling to fail, constructing a 6-ft wide bedroom closet, adding ceiling lights and a fan, enlarging the doorway from 24” to 30,” doubling the size of the attic access opening, removing/replacing the kitchen countertops & backsplash, installing new vinyl flooring in the kitchen & bedroom, installing new sheetrock over a badly cracked plaster ceiling in another bedroom, sanding/refinishing the wood floor in that room, and painting the renovated garage interior. Because I’m height-challenged, Mike suggested raising the kitchen floor relative to the countertop by laying down an extra layer of ¾” plywood over the old vinyl floor before the vinyl-floor installer laid down his own plywood. Mike also suggested replacing my old standard dishwasher with a short model so I could install a beautiful pull-out butcher-block cutting board (on gliders) under the countertop above it, thereby increasing the work-surface area in my small kitchen. Both ideas turned out great. He also suggested adding more phone jacks and electric circuits and outlets, all of which he installed. I had a lot of ideas re what I wanted, but Mike helped me see additional options and then together we came up with a final plan, which we kept fine-tuning together as work proceeded. Working with him was a pleasure. In the end, every room he worked on turned out even better than I’d imagined. Mike was very flexible as the scope of the work expanded even after work began. To accommodate me, he postponed the start of his next job, but ultimately did need to start it before my project was done. To meet my deadline of completing the work prior to a family reunion, he and/or a member of his crew came by periodically to continue work as their scheduled allowed. He also referred me to several subcontractors (re sheet rock, electrical, floor refinishing) who also did fine work. Earlier, he’d referred me to a cabinet-maker for the beautiful custom bathroom cabinets, which Mike installed. If I ever need more remodeling work done, I will hire Paladin Home again without hesitation and without looking elsewhere. And, my dog is crazy about Mike! To me, that says a lot about a person.
Description of Work: Initially, I just wanted to replace the bathroom sink and toilet. Ultimately, I did a complete remodel of the bathroom (down to the studs, ceiling joists, & sub-floor) – including reworking the plumbing & electrical and moving the doorway - as well as a major remodel of both the kitchen and one bedroom, plus a partial remodel of a second bedroom. The price listed above is just what I paid Paladin Home & does not include most materials: bathroom fixtures, tiles, cabinets, faucets & shower bar, wall-mounted light, bars; kitchen countertops (& installation), sink, faucet, dishwasher; bedroom ceiling fan; kitchen/bedroom vinyl flooring (& installation); paint

Came in on time and budget. Mike really knows his stuff!
Description of Work: Mike Roman is a great contractor - listens well, reasonably priced, good team to work with. We renovated our bathroom and put in heating, fans, new floor, vanity top, sink, electrical, etc. He met with us several times before giving us an estimate (his prices were more reasonable than other contractors) and completed the job in a timely fashion. He and his team did a wonderful job from painting to electrical and plumbing installation. He even came back a few weeks after job completion to change a light fixture at no extra charge to us. My family and I highly recommend Mike as a reasonably priced contractor with integrity.

Mike did an excellent job for us. Project completed on time and within our budget. Mike was flexible and provided necessary guidance for us to complete the purchase of cabinets (he measured the cabinets & went with my wife to Home Depot to pick out cabinets), light fixtures, and flooring. Most impressive was when Home Depot messed up on sending us the wrong cabinets, he assisted us to resolve the issue with Home Depot, which was something beyond what we expected of him. We selected our own floor installation company & counter top company. Mike dropped in to ensure the installation was done right. My wife was pregnant with twins at the time, and Mike made sure he cleaned up well daily & at the end of the project. Great work!
Description of Work: We selected Paladin Home (Mike Roman) to remodel our kitchen prior to our twins were born. He knew we had a tight deadline prior to commencing the project. The work included demolishing a wall between our living room & kitchen, building out a new counter top, rewiring electrical/gas line, installing light fixtures & window, hanging cabinets, and overseeing the work of floor installation.

Mike worked very closely with us on the design and materials selection of this project. We have very limited knowledge about deck work, and he educated us about various types of materials along with their pro's/con's. He was meticulous in his work and ensured us the work was done right. We had a hard time describing how we wanted the deck to look, and ended taking a few pictures of designs for us to review. Thank you Mike, and we are still enjoying the deck to this date.

I was referred to Mike by Angelisse Karol, the pro design and color consultant who has a roster of great providers. I met with Mike first in the early spring and explained to him that since this was our only bathroom we felt we had to move out while the majority of the work was being done (I have two young children.) We got a housesit for the month of August which was wonderful - but made it imperative that Mike & his crew start and finish on time. Mike showed up like clockwork on August 1st and work proceeded quickly from there. We were in touch almost every day making decisions about faucets, outlet locations, tub spouts and the like. I was one of those clients who cared alot about details and I felt it was a great partnership, making all those big and small decisions that end up giving a room a specific look. I thought Mike's pricing was extremely fair and that he has a sense of integrity and honor about the quality of work he provides. He also gave me some really good advice along the way, urging me not to cut corners on some important things like the vanity and vanity countertop (which are the focal points of the room). He pointed out that we had waited many years to remodel the bathroom and that it was worth doing things that would leave us happy with the end results. I'm glad I listened to his advice. The bathroom turned out stunning and I feel lucky that I had a completely positive relationship with my contractor.
Description of Work: Mike Roman gutted an existing bathroom which was disgusting & hideous (moldy, old peeling linoleum) and transformed it into an elegant, clean, period-looking and very functional bathroom. He did it on time, on budget, always both giving me good advice AND listening - really listening!!!! - to what I wanted. He started the project on the exact date we agreed on and worked consistently on it until it was done. I never had the sense that he was juggling me with other projects: I felt like I had his full and undivided attention for the duration of the project. He always answers his phone, he consulted me about anything important or visual (I cared a lot about how the bathroom looked). He has a terrific crew including a very talented tilesetter. Mike is also just a very nice guy with a good sense of humor. He holds himself to very high standards but also has good perspective. I was in general a pretty reasonable client but I got a little fussy about a small section of tile that I wanted to change the design of. Mike handled my request with aplomb and humor. He took a look at it and said, "yeah, you are right, it would probably look better that way" and made the change right away. I really appreciated that flexibility and willingness to honor my requests.
Paladin Home did a fantastic job. They paid considerable attention and followed up on all the details and refinements that we requested to make our master bathroom truly a top notch job. They walked us through everything and helped us apply for and get approval on permits. They were very timely on everything and did outstanding work at the highest standards. We have worked with numerous contractors on a variety of projects in our home and so we know how to compare them to others. They absolutely rate a 10 out of 10. On top of all this, pricewise, they are very competitive!
Description of Work: Complete remodeling of master bathroom; installation of all cabinetry, limestone tiling, highend sinks, faucets, shower, tub, toilet, large scale mirrors with framing, and special lighting with all associated plumbing, grouting and electrical work. Assisted in filing of all associated permits.
We moved into a new house that was built in the 1950's with the original kitchen. We wanted to open up the small kitchen by tearing down a wall between the kitchen and living room, and creating a counter-top bar area. We also wanted to completely update the kitchen. From the first time we met Mike Roman to get a quote for the work, we were impressed with his skill and experience (we received quotes from 4 recommended contractors, and liked Mike the best). From start to finish we felt lucky to be working with Mike on the project, his skill is first-rate, he made useful suggestions, pro-actively communicated how the project was going, and kept the project running in order to finish on-time for our move in date. He is a professional in every way - skill, communication, honesty, quality of work, and project management. On top of everything else Mike is just a really trustworthy guy. I wholeheartedly recommend him as a contractor.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen re-model including: 1) tearing down the wall between the kitchen and living room to create a new bar area 2) complete demolition of existing kitchen 3) installing cabinets, appliances, glass tile backsplash, laying underlayment for counters + new bar area, lights (ceiling cans + under cabinet lighting + pendant light) 4) updating and installing electrical needs related to re-model 5) various other - painting kitchen, installing baseboards, installing toilets, tearing down old wall wood-paneling

This could not have been a better experience. Mike Roman is that very rare example of the highest professionalism and quality matched with efficiency and great pricing. His bid was lower than everyone else and his work could not have been better.
Description of Work: This was a total remodel of the kitchen, done in a traditional manner for a 1920 Craftsman bungalow. We took it down to the studs, removed two windows and installed a single window opening in the middle of the room with two modern double-hung wood sash windows. Mike also put in all new wiring. He quoted me three weeks to do the installation, at a fixed price and got it done in four weeks. I thought the three week figure was a bit ambitious and expected more like 6 to 8 weeks. Mike is fast, efficient and all inspections passed the first time. He paid great attention to detail and believe me when I say I had a lot of small details I was concerned about! I wanted a kitchen that was modern in terms of function, but traditional in terms of look and feel. It couldn't have been better. The kitchen looks like it has always been there, with all trim, hardware and fixtures true to the 1920 look, but everything works as it should. The Craftsman style detailing could not have been better. Equally important is that he was extremely clean. He put up a dust barrier between the kitchen and the rest of the house and thoroughly cleaned up after his work every day.
