Ray and Dustin at Tucson Air came and checked the compressor more thoroughly than I could. They tried a "start kit" which will sometimes help a weak motor to start and run, but it wasn't able to kick it over enough. They determined that the motor windings were no longer good and since I had old gear with R22, they weren't able to do anything but a full replacement of the system.
For this house I wanted to keep the costs to minimum for the replacement so they installed a 14 SEER basic unit (equivalent to what was there but higher SEER rating).
I suspect my second unit is just as old so I had them clean the coils and check out that system. Dustin reported the refrigerant level was fine and suggested that I get the capacitors replaced in about a year. I told him to go ahead and just replace them now.
I had Tucson Air install a new AC/furnace at my last house (which only had swamp cooling before I bought it), and have also had various repairs performed at this house and have always been satisfied.
They are a small family-owned business. No fancy trucks or big staff. But they know what they're doing and provide good personal service.
