Mike was professional, helpful, timely and great to work with. I had heard so many nightmare stories about bad stone tile installs. My contractor recommended Mike, and I was very happy with the work and the price. He and the crew worked quickly and did a great job of making sure everything was completely level and that all the rooms flowed seemlessly from one to the next. I would feel confident in recommending Mike to anyone. He does a great job.
Description of Work: Mike and his crew tiled my entire home with Camargo Limestone. He also tiled both of my bathrooms with variations of the same limestone. The price above included materials. My home is around 2,400 square ft. This was a huge and complicated job due to the material and all of the cuts because of my floor plan.

The job was a total disaster. The setting of the tiles was shoddy, with disproportionate size cuts and tiles that were not flush with the walls. So, some of the tiles stuck out from the surface of the other tiles. There were areas which were not symmetrical as they should have been. The most significant issue arose when the stone was grouted before it was sealed. The color of the grout seeped into the stone and completely discolored it in an uneven fashion. When the issue was brought to Mike Smith's attention, he initially said that he did not see any problem with it, although the color was completely different than it was supposed to be. He had a very arrogant attitude when shown the installation instructions I had printed from the manufacturer's website, saying that the stone should be sealed at least once before grouting. He was indignant about how he was supposed to know that, claiming that manufacturers normally place written instructions in the boxes of tiles if there are special things that need to be done. He was positive that there were no such written instructions in the boxes for this tile. When I went out to check the tile boxes, there were indeed the same instructions (on bright canary-yellow paper) that I had printed from the website, sitting on top of the tile in a partially-used box. Clearly, Mike and his helpers simply ignored or never bothered to read the manufacturer's instructions. He then tried to remove the grout from the stone with a couple of grout haze remover products, but there was no improvement. Mike has yet to acknowledge any mistake on his part or to offer any suggestions as to how he would make it right. I had to purchase new tile to re-do the backsplashes. I was so disgusted with his incompetence and arrogant attitude that I refused to have him return to the house to do any work. I had to find a new tile contractor to remove the ruined backsplash, which then removed the drywall. So that had to be replaced before any new tile could be installed.
Description of Work: Mike Smith and Sunset Flooring and Tile, LLC were hired by the general contractor on my kitchen remodel to install the limestone tile backsplashes. I had no input into the choice of installer, but the contractor assured me that he had worked with this installer many tines. I am not sure of what the cost for his services was because I did not pay him directly.

Response from Sunset Flooring and Tile, LLC
In response to the customer's comments, we are very sorry that she was so unhappy with the work. We always stand by our work and work with many contractors such as the one that hired us because of our reputation and quality work. The contractor thought the work was great and thought her complaints were excessive. (She apparently wrote a rather lengthy complaint about him too.) If we could post a photo, the image would show a beautiful back splash. The tile she selected was a natural stone, so they are less than perfect in size, shape and thickness than glass or ceramic tiles. We always put a level to everything and when walls are not plumb, we do our best to hide the problems. We accepted our error with the discoloration issue and tried to return it to the original color by cleaning the tiles, contacting the manufacturer and exploring other options, and all at our expense. We and the contractor offered to tear it out and replace it at our expense. She became even more disgruntled with our suggestions and became unwilling to settle the problem reasonably. We have never had an issue with a customer that could not make all parties happy and should there be a worst case, we are a registered, licensed contractor; so disputes can always go to the Registrar of Contractors if the two parties cannot resolve the issue reasonably. To all our past and current customers that may read this, we are certain you are shaking your head in disbelief at her description of us. Thank you to all of our customers that continue to use our services and refer us to your customers, family and friends.
