I complained and got plenty of reassuring noises but no action. Once I got in touch with the Az attorney general and registrar of contractors Solar Bear agreed to just give me my money back, except for the thermo and paying the staff who replaced it. After many months and much haggling Solar Bear agreed to a refund. When the check came, it wouldn't clear. When I brought that to Solar Bear's attention, I was told that if they made good, they wouldn't be able to meet their payroll. Not my problem. I gave them one more chance, and this time the check cleared. Word to the wise: at the time of this interaction Solar Bear was based in the PHX metro area and looking to expand into Tucson. They may have cleaned up their act since then, but you should still check them out deeply and thoroughly and get EVERYTHING in writing including a complete parts list, their price, their markup, a firm finish date, and never EVER pay them in advance. Make sure any deposit required is fully refundable -- get it in writing!
Description of Work: Since I live alone and don't need to be getting up on my roof anymore, I fell for their seasonal maintenance sales pitch. When the representative arrived I additionally agreed to replace my water heater and put in a programmable thermostat for my forced-air heater. The thermo was replaced that day. They sent an A/C guy to work on my swamp cooler -- and sent him with the wrong size pads and a sump pump for some kind of appliance I don't own. The guy was humiliated but still did his best by cleaning and replacing the pads and pumps in my cooler. Meanwhile I'd paid for the water heater and the maintenance contract.

The installers at Solar Bear were good. The one installer spread his gear out all over my garage which I really didn't like but they did a quick job. They were timely because they came within 24 hours of my furnace quitting. Solar Bear can be hard to get a hold of so I think that I might use someone else in the future.
Description of Work: Solar Bear installed my furnace.

After the above story, I joined Angie's list and received bids from 3 other "A" rated heating and cooling companies. No flim-flam from these people and went with "Trusted H&C".
Description of Work: Checked the air conditioning system and found that the distribution lines were in need of replacement. Checked the existing AC unit and found that it was very old. Wanted $1000 to replace the distribution lines under my park model and $8000 for a replacement AC unit. Called back an hour or two later and reduced the price to $5000. The technician said that "The boss usually doesn't ever change the bid price but today he did for you".

From the first visit to the last, this company's technicians were all about the sales pitch and getting me to pay for things they deemed to be urgently needed. I've since been told by other companies that none of it was really necessary. The new company I'm working with came today, checked my AC, did some minor cleaning and walked me through everything he'd done in less than an hour, for $69. No sales pitches, no "Well...this is such outdated equipment you should really consider..." I came very close to contacting the Better Business Bureau, but it was too long after the initial "fleecing" to file a complaint, in my own estimation. But I would never use this company again and I have cautioned friends and family not to fall for the phone pitch, if they get one. Horrendous experience!
Description of Work: This was the worst experience I've had with any company of this type in my life. From the first time they call you to reel you in for an appointment, they're all about selling you something every single time they arrive. And they're good at it: the first time they came by to check both my AC and heating systems, I wound up spending almost $1200 in plumbing "upgrades" and a three year contract for yearly checkups. During that first visit, a technician broke something off of our heating unit, promised to come back and fix it the next day...and three weeks later, after several calls, I finally talked to a manager who told me that he'd never heard about the problem. I had made the technician write it on my receipt so that I could prove that the piece had been broken off. They finally got someone to come out a week or so later and I made sure I watched him put it back, so that he couldn't come up with some other scam that would cost me money despite the contract. After two more visits that cost me about $300 more, despite the contract, I finally decided I was so dissatisfied with their services that I didn't want them anywhere near my house, even though I had two more service calls to go.

Description of Work: This company keeps calling our home number despite being told we are on the national Do Not Call registry. I have now formally complained to the Arizona Attorney General. Members of our household have been solicited at least six times now. Upon reading about this company on other forums, numerous other people have been contacted repeatedly in this way. I have no direct experience with this company. HOWEVER, the fact that they allegedly regularly violate consumer law, to me, is an indicator that they would not be a good company to deal with. Furthermore, they apparently don't pay attention to detail, like who's on the Do Not Call registry. This does not bode well, to me.

Their price is very good. The people are very thorough. They check on safety stuff around the house like carbon monoxide. I think that they go a little bit further than the regular people.
Description of Work: I used Solar Bear about three weeks ago. I have a five-year package with them.

I thought I had taken care of it, but I received notification that they are rebilling me. My problem is that I can't reach them locally because there is no local phone number. They are not listed in the phone book for Tucson. The closest number was for Chandler. I would warn people in Tucson not to use Solar Bear.
Description of Work: They came out in June of 2011 to replace a filter in my air conditioning and clean the coils. My memory was that they originally charged me $89. They are now charging me $1200 for that work. They are saying they provided many other service, but they did not provide any other services. The man who came out was a nice young man, but he was in pain. He had been hit in his ribs or something and was not feeling well. I stupidly signed his invoice without reading it saying I would use their services going forward, but I never used their service because I called and canceled it.

Solar Bear plumbing called to offer an inspection of my home plumbing system. I agreed. Their plumber came and did what appeared to be a complete inspection. During the inspection we received an emergency phone call and were unable to have him replace the two faulty shut-off valves at that time. Because the plumber was not aware of the availability of automatic sink and toilet emergency shut-off valves, we decided to call another company to do the repair work. That company did not agree with Solar Bear's findings. They double checked the "faulty" shut-off valves and assured us that they were OK and DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED!!!!!!! It appears to us that Solar Bear may be using the inspection to find work even if no work is needed!!!
Description of Work: He inspected the plumbing system in my home and added a liquid treatment to the drains. This included draining the hot water heater to see if there was excess calcium build-up. He found two faulty shut-off valves in the house - 1 sink and 1 toilet and wanted to replace them. We Declined - See Below.
