they answered emails quickly and scheduled us promptly. they showed up on time and in uniform with a properly labeled company van. small details but it shows a company's level of professionalism. the tech asked a few questions and inspected the system. he explained the two things he found that might need repair and was honest about how long he thought they would last (nothing was immediately required) there wasn't a high pressure sales pitch but they did push their service plan. I was happy with his explanations, written estimate of possible future repairs, and his honesty. We would use this company again.

They repaired 2 of our ac units. I felt very comfortable with them. They were very professional. They did some follow up calls which we really appreciated. They also come out and check our systems a few times a year. I don't normally recommend companies very often but I would recommend this company.

Thank you for the review. We appreciate your call and request for a solar quote. I agree with your financial advisor that solar is not in your best interest even though the monthly payments for solar would have been 25% less than your current electric bills. At 95 years of age the return on investment may not be in your best interest. I am very pleased to have earned your business to service your 16 year old HVAC system to help it maintain operation and efficiency for as long as possible. -Andrew Dobbins

The appointment was scheduled conveniently and quickly and they showed up on time. He was thorough, professional and answered all questions I had about increasing the efficiency in my home. I do not know the terminology of explanations in this field, but he took the time to ensure I understood what he was saying and had video to explain things about efficiency, duct work, sealing, cost effectiveness, and seer ratings that put it all in comprehensible format. I felt the appointment addressed all my concerns and am very happy to have the information I need to make some changes to increase efficiency and comfort in my home.

On 6/27 called Intelligent Design(IT) to report high ac temperature. IT confirmed that freon was leaking, added freon and leak test dye to locate the leak. The test confirmed the coil was leaking. The coil was still under manufacturers(York) warranty. An off the shelf coil wasn't available and York quoted a fabrication time of 3 weeks. Eventually York extended the fabrication time further out. Rather than accept this IT and the York distributor came up with a York replacement coil. I made many calls to York and Johnston Controls to expedite the replacement fabrication however, neither was proactive nor willing to help in any way. I don't recommend a York AC system.

Initially very good but after that things slowed down but it was a busy time of year for A/C's. With A/C the most needed work they were very good at getting the new units installed quickly but follow up items took longer than they should have. From my earlier review where I gave a lower grade on price and overall I have now I increased the ratings based on further talks with the owner and doing a price comparison with other contractors. Although Intelligent Design is a little higher than other contractors there are other perks the company gives which makes the price difference negligible. In my opinion, Intelligent Design is a quality company and I recommend those considering an A/C replacement to hear what they have to offer.

The parts required for the repair (wheel and relay) were not readily available. The climate here in July is in the 100s and I find it hard to believe that it takes that long to get the parts. The repair, once the parts were available, was handled quickly and the service was good. The repairman advised me he would get back with me to sign up for a service plan for my units (i had spoken to him several times about this). Part of this service plan would cover portions of the bill (cost savings to me). He never got back with me or returned my call. He was supposed to come meet with me and sign me up for the service plan the weekend after my repair was made (the repair was done on wed/thu and he was to come see me on Sat). The service was good and professional but the delay for standard parts and the failure to follow up for a service plan was disappointing.

In the beginning of April, we scheduled an appointment over the phone with a female receptionist of Intelligent Design Air Conditioning and Heating for a quote to install central air for our home on April 9th at 2:00 pm. I explained we had another company coming that morning for the same reason and were looking to install at the end of the month. On April 9th, this company was a NO CALL, NO SHOW. At 2:40 p.m. I called the company. The line rang incessantly. When the line was answered, I thought perhaps I had misdialed due to the loud music in the background. I informed the woman who eventually answered the line we had waited over 60 minutes, and no one had shown up. She apologized and offered to contact the technician to see if he could head over after he finished up at his current location. We declined due to a previous commitment later that afternoon. We requested someone contact us on Monday, April 21st to reschedule the appointment. No one from this company contacted us. On 4/25 at 6:00 pm, I received a call from a technician from the company calling to confirm our appointment for the next day, Saturday, April 26th. I told him since we did not hear back from his company we went with Hamstra. He offered to still come out. He also said that sometimes that happens in scheduling. I repeated we had gone with another provider with an install date of 4/30. Within 4 minutes, I received a call from the manger apologizing for the incident. He offered to come out the next day and make it up for the mishap. He mentioned the other company was a lot more expensive, and he could offer a better price. I informed him we had already put a down payment of 10,000 and had an installation date in place. He suggested I contact Hamstra to get back my check . He said the company would give me back the check. I felt uncomfortable and again declined. I thanked him for calling me back .He also stated he would be firing his answering service.

We apologize once again about the issue with our answering service. In April our phones were ringing off the hook and we had an answering service set up to pick up after 3 rings so that our customers could speak to a live person if all the lines were busy. WE DID INDEED FIRE THE ANSWERING SERVICE AFTER THIS INCIDENT. Not only did they cost us your business but you were so upset with the mishap that you felt the need to grade us negatively on Angie's list. I am so sorry We now have 5-6 people to answer the phones for the peak season rather than the 2 we had in April. Our company doubled in size this year and in April we were playing catch up just as the busy season got going. Our customers are our number one concern and I am sorry that we never got the opportunity to show you our quality of installation and service. I would usually offer to use our 100% money back guarantee with any customer that is not 100% satisfied but we never got the opportunity to earn your business. I am also sorry that you were uncomfortable with us calling to try and fix the situation, earn your business, and schedule an appointment for a free estimate. I wish you the best in your future endeavors, -Andrew Dobbins

I interview 5 different companies because of the cost of the job. I went with Intelligent Design because they had a good reputation with Angie's List, had done the job for our neighbor across the road, said they could do both the air upgrade and the electrical box and upgrade, said they had satisfaction guaranteed on all their work, and had 12 months same as cash financing on all their work. I was interviewing both air-conditioner install crews and electricians. When the salesman said that everything was guaranteed for 20 years, and that they could also do the electric upgrade and new box, I decided they were the best choice even if they were not the best price. When they were doing the work things got postponed a couple times. No big deal, we weren't moved in yet. But when I found that they still hadn't ordered the permit for the electrician's work, I had to insist that it happen. Then I was asked to sign off on the work being completed. I said I would after it was inspected by city. The inspector for the city came and said the electrical work was amateurish and did not pass it. As luck would have it, my husband overheard an electrician at his workplace talking about our house. We looked up the name and found out that Intelligent Design had subbed out the contract to a company who the Better Business Bureau had put up a warning about because they could not find them to check on claims. They had changed their address and phone. But were still doing business. Beyond the shoddy work, the city permit inspector had said that one of the breakers keeps popping and needed to be addressed, there was not label on the box, and it was not properly grounded. Intelligent Design ordered another inspection after JEB Electric came back to fix the issues. A new inspector came out and passed everything. He then said that I needed to call TEP to have them do a hard shut down to up the amps to 200. I called and TEP did not know anything about an upgrade because one had never been ordered. (Intelligent Design or JEB Electric never called them.) TEP said that they would need to come out and inspect. They warned that if the wiring from the meter to the house was not good, they would need to charge about $2000 to fix it. I was rather upset. However after about three weeks, TEP installed the new meter and said all was okay. Meantime I was concerned because the air-conditioning was not reaching the back master bedroom, instead of fixing anything Intelligent Design came out and walked around with a heat sensor to find the problem spots and said it was because of the way the house was built. Some guarantee. I was told that to get air to the back bedroom I needed to leave our bedroom door open. I was also concerned that we did not have power to the lights in the back yard since the work was done. We had power there before the work, and the inspector said that it was the responsibility of the last person to have hands on the electric box. When I asked Intelligent Design about it they said that JEB Electric said it wasn't their issue and that it never worked. (I am sure it did.) I refused to sign off on the work until the electrician came back out and fixed the problems, that never happened, but Intelligent Design didn't wait until I signed off on the work, they told the charge card company that they contracted with for "1 year same as cash" to start collecting. The fine print says that if I miss a payment I need to pay 24%. So naturally I started paying even though the work is still not finished. I called again to find out when someone was going to fix the electrical problem. I was told that someone would be out which never happened. No contact for three weeks. So I posted the above review, which was the only tool I had since they had already paid themselves without my signing off. When I posted this report on Angie?s List and Google, Intelligent Design?s owner called to talk. He came to the house and said he wanted to make us happy and asked how that could happen. I told him about the hot back bedroom. He checked and said we just needed a larger air return. I asked him to fix that. He agreed. However, it turned into a bit of a inconvenient and silly mess. First a worker from Intelligent Design arranged to come and put in the vent cover. We arranged to be here, the worker came out of the bedroom and said that he brought the wrong size. He arranged for another time to come out. He came back with a larger vent cover, it was the same size and the one we had on there. I asked him why and he said he was just told to put a new cover on. I explained what the purpose was and he laughed and said he was never told that. He arranged to come back again to fix it properly. Meantime, Intelligent Design sent JEB Electric back out to fix the lights in the backyard. He came out, walked around the yard and said no way it ever worked and that the wires in the yard are hazardous. I was upset that he could change out the power box and leave hazardous wires. I was also upset that he said it could never have worked, since I know it did. I called Intelligent Design?s owner and he agreed to send another electrician out. The new electrician also said no way it could have worked before. Neither one ever checked to see if maybe a wire in the box could have mistakenly not been attached which is would would need to have caused this if it HAD worked before as I said. I know it did! So, Intelligent Design?s owner said he would fix it to make me happy. I agreed, hoping that the wire would be reconnected. A simple fix. Then this letter (see below) came from him asking me to sign off that I would never say anything bad about them in the future or I would need to pay the price of fixing it. I told them my review could not be bought and said I was through working with this messed up company. I would rather get my own electrician and get it fixed out of my pocket than fool other consumers into thinking that this company was reputable. Here is exactly what the letter they sent us said: ?We have committed to increase the return under the old furnace closet so that the Hollingsworth residence will have better comfort in the far bedroom. Also we will run new electric from the main panel in conduit under eave to southwest corner of house then to underground conduit to pool equipment area. Install new time clock fro pump, new switch for aerator and new j-box and switch for pool light. New line from time clock to pump. In addition we have increased the service club membership from 1 yr to 3 years. In agreeing to this you are signing that you agree and understand that this will not guarantee that pool light and aerator is in good condition and/or functioning order. We do not guarantee those pieces of equipment. By agreeing to have the items listed above that were not part of the initial contracted scope of work installed for free, you also agree that you will give no less than A or 5 star ratings or any negative at all of our company on the internet or anywhere else. If this portion of the agreement is not upheld you agree to pay full retail for all of the free items given in an attempt to make you a happy customer. Agreeing to complete this extra work is in no way an admission of guilt. We have had 2 separate licensed bonded electricians inspect the pool lights and the wiring and they have determined that new electric panel install was done beautifully and did not affect the pool lights in any way.? I have to wonder how many other reviews this company bought in a similar manner. FYI, we investigated what happened with the outdoor light and found that the pole light works fine, but is not hooked up to the box. WE are assuming that when the electrician came back out to fix the popping breaker he cut the wires to the outside and rerouted it to the one that was popping. Fixing that problem, but leaving us without power to the lights outside. As I said... many times... it worked before!!!!

Response from Intelligent Design Air Conditioning, Plumbing, Solar, & Electric
Let me start by saying we are so sad to see such a dissatisfied customer. Our goal is 100% customer satisfaction from each and every customer we have the pleasure to serve. It is obvious that 100% satisfaction has not been achieved in this case. Even though the dissatisfaction does not have anything to do with the installation of a new heating and cooling system, we are upset that we have not met this customer’s expectations with those we sub work out to. For that we are truly sorry. This customer’s dissatisfaction has caused us to review the quality of those we choose to entrust our clients to, not only for electrical services, but also all other service providers we work hand in hand with. We can honestly say that after our review of contractors we work with and after the changes we have made, we truly trust and appreciate those whom we still call on to work side by side with us. With that said the company we hired is licensed and bonded and does not have any BBB complaints. JEB electric is a smaller electric company here in Tucson that mostly does work for the Marana school district. Although they have chosen not to deal with BBB accreditation they still hold an A+ rating and have no alerts and no complaints in the last three years. They have been in business since 1997. Please look them up yourself. Their register of contractors license number is 120410 for commercial and 120411 for residential. I think that our biggest frustration on this job occurred when the first inspector came out and pointed out all sorts of problems as this review indicated. Had that been the end of the story, we would have been at fault since we chose the electrician who did this work and we would have had to assume all responsibility. However, that is not the end of the story. When the job was re-inspected, we were informed that the second inspector said that the majority of claims made by the first inspector were very inaccurate. The claims made by the first inspector were so egregious that the second inspector said he was going to file a complaint with the first inspector’s supervisor. The electrical panel has been approved by the city inspector, a TEP inspector, and an additional electrical contractor just for good measure. The popping of the breaker as described by the customer was a circuit inside the home that then went out to a shed. The electrician was hired to only replace the outside electric panel with a new 200 amp service panel. This work is done on the outside of the home when no one lived at the property and the breaker circuit went inside the home before heading out to the shed. Because the home was locked this could not be inspected at the time of the panel installation. Even though he was only hired to do the panel upgrade after the customer complaint that the breaker that was popping fixed the grounded wires that were going out to the shed at no additional cost, trying to appease this customer. At no time was anything in the panel rearranged or disconnected. The customers accusation that we fixed the popping breaker by disconnecting the light pole by the pool equipment is unfounded and untrue. The response from the customer about this free work was not gratefulness but rather still being very angry that it was not automatically done. She has said that when we upgrade a panel we should automatically fix any other electrical issues in the home at no extra charge. That attitude of entitlement to fix unrelated items for free is the theme of all our interactions with this customer as you will see in the remainder of the review response. After the customers moved into their home they noticed that their pool lights were not working and blamed the panel upgrade. We scheduled a visit after her complaint to take a look at it and upon inspection by the original electrician and then an additional electrician at her request. I’d like to add that the electricians did not know each other and both have over 25 years experience. Also we offered to pay for an inspection by a third electrician of her choosing to verify the findings. The electrical inspections found that the pool lights did not originally work and could not have due to the conduit and electrical line running out to the pool being completely rusted through and completely disconnected and frayed at the pool pump circuit. (if I could only show a picture of the connection box at the pool equipment no other explanation would be needed for almost anyone reading this review) Both electricians have confirmed that the customer refused to be outside when they were inspecting all of the wire connections inside the new electrical panel. During one of the inspections I was there and personally watched as the wires in the panel were inspected while the customer did something else inside. We tried to educate the homeowner to no avail. She is insistent that the pool light worked before she moved in. Any time there were any findings that were not what she agreed with the conversation could not be continued because she would get so upset she had to stomp into the house and refused to be spoken to. The only full explanation that could be given was to her husband and when talking to him he agreed with everything that was discussed with the electricians. He would not and could not bring this understanding to his wife. Although two licensed bonded electricians tried to explain that electricity could not run through that wire the customer was insistent that the pool light worked before they moved in. We asked her to please call another electrician to inspect but she refused and insisted that a wire inside the electric panel must be disconnected. Both electricians inspected the inside of the panel to make sure all the wires were connected. In addition the second electrician that was only inspecting said “the that the panel upgrade that the first electrician did was beautiful work” as did the second city inspector and the TEP inspector. We knew the pool light could not have worked but we wanted to make this customer happy so we offered to dig a trench and run a new electric line in conduit all the to her pool. This would have been a total cost to us of over $2500. The customer mentions a “simple fix” in her review which is imagined by her to be just connecting a wire in the panel. As I previously stated no such simple fix is possible. About the air-conditioning airflow: When the customer purchased her system she chose a system with no mention of airflow issues. This is understandable because they did not live in the home yet and were not aware of any airflow issues. The air flow issue was a result of keeping rooms door closed and the return air could not escape the room to get back around to the HVAC intake. We offered to fix this for free to try and make her a happy customer even though it was not part of the initial bid and scope of work. This cost us $600. Once again she felt she was entitled to that work being done for free and was mad we didn’t do it with the original installation. We also offered a total of 3 years labor warranty and 3 years routine maintenance to try and make her happy. So far we have fixed the wiring to her shed so that her breaker would stop tripping for free, provided free solutions to fix her air flow, gave extra years of warranty and service, and offered to run new electric to make her pool light work. The total cost to attempt to make this customer happy: over $3500. The letter: The letter was written with the intent of reiterating what had been spoken in a conversation that occurred with this customer. This conversation took place when we were all seeking a resolution that would make this customer happy. This letter was not written to request any particular review or to place conditions on this customer, rather it was written for three reasons: 1. To put into writing the verbal understanding that we had come to including the understanding that Intelligent Design is an HVAC company and cannot make claims that this resolution would completely resolve any electrical issues on this property that were out of our control. 2. To ensure that all parties would no longer place blame on one another, but rather all parties would be happy with the resolution that we had verbally agreed to. 3. To ensure that this customer would be 100% happy. Let me expand on this one. One of our guarantees is our 100% satisfaction guarantee. In this guarantee, we commit to every customer that if they are not 100% satisfied, we will remove every removable piece of equipment and refund 100% of the money spent on those removable items. In doing so, we wish to ensure that every customer is completely elated with our services. Sadly, this customer was dissatisfied with services which were not removable. As these services were not removable, we had to find a way to still enact our 100% satisfaction guarantee and that required some creativity. We offered free services and this customer seemed to be very happy with this resolution (these services were valued at $3500). In order to ensure that this would in fact create a satisfied customer, I did place in writing that they would give us A and 5 star ratings. If a customer is willing to give us these reviews after such dissatisfaction, then we know that we have in fact created a win-win resolution and that our customer is truly satisfied. Sadly, as you can see, this was not the case. It is truly the goal of everybody at Intelligent Design to find a win-win resolution in this matter and we ask for one more chance to create a win-win solution. So assuming that you(the customer) are reading this review, please call the office and ask for Andrew or for Jason, we would truly love to work this out. -Andrew Dobbins

The folks at Intelligent Design were 100% great, From the initial contact ( Lance) all the way to their top tech AND to the office staff and even the owner, it was easy to tell they were totally committed to making my install and followup a BIG SUCCESS. My main objectives was to lower my monthly bills ( more efficiency), have a quieter system ( less noise from air flow in the house) and install the best air filtering ( my daughter has allergies) available. The ENTIRE company worked had and relentlessly to exceed all those objective. In our case we bought the top of the line equipment and I am very pleased we did so, as it turns out the unit was more adaptable to exactly how we wanted it ( we adjusted the CFM airflow to meet our objectives perfectly) I found some independent reviews of the air purifier that said it was the gold standard in the industry and it has made a huge difference in our home. A big bonus was that the new system can be controlled by a smart phone, so that means if I am driving home from work I can turn on the system before I leave from work and have it just the way I want it by the time I get home. And my guess is that since I dont have to turn it on BLASTING like I used to, its cheaper to cool it down gently while I am driving home. Anyway, I would recommend them 100% .

The inspector thoroughly inspected the ducts and units, inside and outside. Although everything looked clean and intact, he figured out a likely reason for the smell, and had some practical suggestions for making the furnace room more secure. He also connected possible mold contamination with my husband's athsma, which is a big health concern for us. He recommended some changes in configuration of our AC units which will improve the air quality. I was very pleased with the inspector's professionalism and genuine care for our well-being.

I was very impressed with the company's response and service. Todd, the technician who responded, was very professional and answered my questions thoroughly and in layman's terms. After troubleshooting the unit, he explained what had happened to cause the a/c to stop working and he removed the capacitor and tested it for me to show me it was not working. After replacing the part, the a/c did not work and he again, explained to me that the malfunctioning capacitor had caused the power to go directly to the fan motor which also needed replacement. After exchanging the two parts, the a/c worked fine. He also did a courtesy check of my other a/c unit to ensure it was working properly. During this repair, a lightening storm was approaching and he continued to work but cautioned me that if the storm approached, he would have to stop working. He did his best in making sure that the a/c was up and running before the storm arrived. He explained to me the preventive maintenance plans the company offered and I did not feel pressured into buying a plan. I will recommend this company to family and friends.
Description of Work: Replaced a/c fan motor and capacitor.

Neal called and arrived within the time given. He was very professional and explained what he was doing while he performed his service call. The only thing I would have had him do differently would have been for him to leave me a new air filter since mine didn't need replacing, yet; it will need to be replaced soon. I was also surprised that he didn't offer me an annual or semi-annual service at a discounted price.
Description of Work: Checked but didn't replace air filter, checked out A/C system, cleaned and polished the unit.
