There's something about this company that bothers me. They are pushy and seem to lack professionalism. It always feels like they are trying to sell some add-on thing rather than just perform the service they came for. It's always "we have such a deal for you! And it will only cost you $xxx!" I prefer to do business with a company that is lower key and whom I believe I can trust. I don't trust these people. We called them last summer to replace our AC because they had lots of good Angie's List reviews. We probably should have checked for other contractors, but used them. They got the job done, but it kind of left a bad taste in our mouths. Our second AC unit is probably going to need replacement, but we won't use these folks to do it. UPDATE (April 24, 2015): After I posted the above review, I received a call from the company's owner, Andrew, expressing concern about my experience with his employee and the service I received. I asked if employees got commission on what they sold, and Andrew replied with a Red Herring, saying that the customers were charged a flat rate, in other words, never responding to the question of if employees received a commission for what they sold. Andrew sent out his head technician to recheck the amount of coolant in the unit. He said the original technician shouldn't have tried to sell me coolant since all repairs and maintenance on the new install are covered for two years, including coolant, if needed. It was needed. When the new unit was installed six months before, the installer had not added the extra coolant required for the greater than 25-foot run to the furnace. That requires additional coolant to increase the pressure to the proper figure. He explained what all the readings meant and how they affected the performance of an HVAC system. Since I have little knowledge of those workings, that was enlightening. He further explained that the man who did the service was "new" and apparently lacked proper training. Andrew said that he was working on providing better training for all his employees. He also said that if I had paid the $100 for the pound of coolant necessary, the company would have refunded the money. Presumably, that would have been if I had complained; otherwise, the company most likely would have not known. I had to wonder how many people paid for things covered by the warranty without knowing they didn't have to. In any case, the head technician checked everything, added coolant, tested the temperatures, and even looked at the other, older unit, pronouncing it in good condition. To their credit, the owner has called me several times to make sure everything was done to my satisfaction (and to see if I was going to edit my review here).

Thank you for your review and for speaking with me on the phone after you had your system serviced. We are very sorry that you felt that we were trying to sell you things that you felt you did not want to spend money on for your system. When we spoke on the phone you mentioned that you have surge protectors on your other appliances in the home with the intention of protecting the items that you have purchased. Our service technicians are instructed that if the condensing unit does not have a surge protector to let the homeowner know about it in case they would like to purchase one and have us install it. The air conditioning and heating system is the most expensive appliance in your house and if you have electrical surges in your area a surge protector is a great way to protect your investment. You said to me on the phone that you did want to have one but are not going to pay for it. I appreciate the opportunity to send our general manager and a different technician out to offer you the surge protector for free that you wanted but did not want to pay for, and to do a tuneup on your other system. We did these services for free to try and make amends for the fact that you felt that in offering you a surge protector we were just trying to sell you things that you did not need. We do not want any money from any customer if they are not happy with our services. I would also like to address the question on whether our service technicians are paid commission and the comment about the "red herring". Our billing method is called flat rate. The total cost is based on the part that needs to be replaced not a per hour cost. This ensures that every customer is charged the same for the same part. No matter how long the service technician takes for various repairs you will always be charged the same amount for the repair. Just as you are charged the same amount for the repair every time the service technician also gets a flat rate rather than an hourly wage for the repair that is done. We are very happy that during the visit from our general manager we confirmed that when first technician identified low refrigerant charge that it was not a "training issue" as you had thought. Rather we just needed to let our newest technician know that at our company any repairs are free within the first two years after installation. None of our service technicians are "new" to the industry and they have the highest level of certification available nationally called N.A.T.E. Each service ticket is looked over by management and had we identified that refrigerant was needed, and a mistake had been made in charging the customer for it within two years of installation we would have refunded the money without the customer having to identify it. We have processes in place to catch these kinds of anomalies. Thanks again for adjusting your review and allowing us to make things better for you. .I contacted Intelligent Design for my AC diagnostics/repair based on Angie's List reviews. Technician Daniel V. quickly identified the problems and explained my options. All work completed two days later. Daniel left the work area so clean, if I hadn't seen it being done, I wouldn't have thought anything was done! Daniel was courteous and professional throughout. I opted to purchase the maintenance plan, which reduced repair costs significantly, and know my systems will be well maintained for years to come.
Description of Work: Performed AC diagnostics on 4/07/2015. Returned 4/10 to replace coil, add safety overflow sensor, add R-410-A, etc.

Refrigerant was added to the system and using a digital thermometer each room vent was tested for correct air return. The filter was examined and did not need replaced. The tech suggested a whole house filtration system which may help with breathing issues of a family member. He also suggested a surge protector to reduce possible damage from electrical surges.
Description of Work: Complete inspection of air conditioning system. Refrigerant was required and the return vents were examined in order to balance the returned air.

The guy arrived promptly at the appointed time. I just wanted the service advertised...to clean and inspect my AC unit for summer service. My home had just sold, and I wanted everything in the home to be in good order. When the young man finished, he started with ALL THESE REPAIRS that were needed. Yes, I knew the unit was old as did the new buyers. All they wanted was for it to be working. When he started on the repairs that were needed, I explained to him that all I wanted was to make sure it worked. He literally berated me about how old it was and I should go ahead with all of these repairs. Again, I explained to him that they knew the age and had accepted it. He kept on and on and on until I wound up buying a maintenance plan for one year. I really didn't have the extra money (several hundred dollars) as I was moving across the country. I literally felt swindled. I was so angry after he left that I just cried! I don't know if these repairmen at Intelligent Design work on commission, but BEWARE! They will service your unit as the ad said, then they will try to get you to do something else that you didn't ask for. 1071

Their technician Daniel was right on time, professionally attired, full set of techinicans tools metering and other devices, and totally transparent with each action he was taking. He welcomed my accompanying him as he did his research and answered my bevy of questions about what he was doing. After an extensive survey of and on the spot repairs as needed, Daniel gave me a complete written summary of the repairs made, weaknesses and bad situations identified, ratios of current function measured against those required or expected of the particular parts of the unit, and recommendations forward. In short, this was one of the most thorough professional unbiased service checks I have ever had. Danny and Intelligent truly have earned the best of the best ratings. The price was exactly as quoted. and given that my 20 year old system is about on its last rodeo, Intelligent Design will my first look for replacement. YES I will use them again and again.

They actually turned out alright except I thought they gave me a very hard sell and I ended up buying a $2700 contract for 10 years that I had never intended to. I didn't like the guy but I signed the contract and I have used them. However, I have had to call them when I needed like the filters changed; the twice a year filter change. I think they are okay but I didn't like the man. I thought he talked me into it and I won't even be in this house in 10 years. Then he went on to say, it was transferable. My husband had just died and I was, I think very gullible but I did sign and have had to call them when I needed annual service. They have come up and done it. The first time I had them they didn't change one of the filters and it functioned for 6 months with no filter. I wouldn't rate them as somebody I would highly recommend to anyone but I have a 10 year contract so I will have to use them. They were supposed to service twice a year, they didn't come and I had to call them. They came that day. The air conditioning does work okay. They were very punctual when I contacted them.

After finding a great deal on Angie's List for the repair of the outdoor water faucet, I was quickly contacted by Intelligent Design and an appointment scheduled within the next few days. John arrived on the day and time agreed to and quickly repaired the faucet. And he did a quick inspection and found our main water line turn off was broken. John patiently explained why it was important to have this fixed. The price was reasonable so another visit was scheduled to have it replaced as well as have my water heater inspected. Within a week, the main line turn off valve was replaced and the water heater inspected. After inspection and showing me deteriorated parts and explaining what they were, he recommended a new one. I was not surprised as in the last year we have discovered that while our house was built in 2004, most of our appliances are 2001. So, our $69 outdoor faucet became a new water heater, water filtration system and repaired main water line for $7000. Did I do a lot of investigation into pricing no, but I did research the water filtration system and like what I read. While I could have done without the expense of all of this, I am happy with the service from this company - polite, on time and respectful of the homeowner. I would highly recommend them for all your plumbing needs.

Intelligent Design Service Technician Kevin Green came out to perform an inspection/checkup on my HVAC system that they had installed approximately one and half years ago. I especially appreciated how Mr. Green explained the "what's" and "why's" of all the procedures he completed. As I did not have a current service contract with the company, Mr. Green thoroughly explained what was provided under Intelligent Design's service contract. I appreciated that Mr. Green allowed me to review the various price levels of the contracts without feeling pressured. He simply explained all the potential benefits so that I could decide whether or not to purchase. I did chose to purchase the two year contract as I saw the added benefit of the additional coverage of whole house plumbing and water heater coverage. As I understand it, this is new to the services they provide. No buyer's remorse after Mr. Green left. Additionally, as a thank you, Mr. Green installed a surge protector on my AC compressor (lifetime warranty) at no additional charge. The HVAC system installed by Intelligent Design has performed as promised. I remain very satisfied with my decision to allow your company to install and maintain a very quality system in my home. Thank you to Andrew, Kevin and the rest of the Intelligent Design staff for the great customer service!!

It went beautifully. Paul M was pleasant, well spoken and very knowledgeable about our units. He discussed in detail the problems we might encounter due to the age of the inside unit (1997), and the fact that we have r-22 coolant. He also talked about the various options as to how we could solve our problem - for now and in the future. He was not upset when we chose the lowest cost option for the immediate future. We were so impressed with him and Intelligent Design that we decided to buy a service contract with them. When we did so, our original cost was wiped out.

Called them out for a preventative maintenance check-up of our system. The tech that came out, Efrain, was on time and very willing to explain and demonstrate what he was doing and checking. He was careful with my system, taking care not to damage anything else around it. He was able quickly install a couple of needed capacitors during the visit.

Daniel V. came out to check out our air conditioner in preparation for the upcoming Tucson heat. We scheduled the appointment and he was right on time. Daniel was very friendly and personable. He did his checks and washed the coils off up on the roof. The air conditioner was fine and needed no repair. Daniel suggested a surge protector and a few other possible upgrades. We decided on the surge protector and he installed it. Intelligent Design (I.D.) installed a new Lennox heat pump in June, 2013. They provided regular checks and maintenance at no additional charge. The unit suddenly stopped working on Saturday, March 29, 2015. The service technician, Reggie, quickly responded to my call to I.D. He initially determined that some key parts required replacement. Beginning early the next week, he spent a total of about 2 full days attempting to repair the unit in consultation with ID and the manufacturer to no avail. When it was finally determined more precisely which part required replacement, he requested it from Lennox, whereupon he was told that it would take a week for the part to arrive. Reggie was aware that I wanted a fast resolution to the problem, since the affected area of the home included the bedrooms, which became too warm to sleep comfortably. As a result of his efforts, Lennox provided a new replacement unit immediately, which he installed the same day. The replacement unit appears to be working perfectly, and we look forward to a comfortable night's sleep. Both Reggie and ID were communicative and super responsive in resolving the issue. Perfect 10.

Service provider at 8am sharp and was very cordial, friendly and knowledgeable. He took the time to answer our questions, as we observed what he was doing and took the time to patiently familiarize us with other related considerations about our current plumbing setup and provided recommendations. His candidness and honest assessmentof our particular plumbing setup lead the Mrs. and i to inquire into other plumbing, heating and cooling services. John came across as very professional and a person to be trusted. It can be hard to find good help these days but with John our worries quickly faded away. Intelligent Design certainly left a most positive impression on us. We will certainly be seeking them in the future for all of our plumbing needs.

Kevin replaced the run capacitor and added refrigerant to top off charge, after inspecting and evaluating the function of our system. I was so pleased with the service that I obtained a two year service contract from the company should future problems arise. A+ for this company!

I scheduled a tech from Intelligent Design to perform a diagnostic, this was done March 26. He made his findings and one of them was cleaning the coils to which I agreed to. He was very professional and performed the work to my satisfaction. Unknown to him, when the coils were cleaned, liquid seeped down the unit to the motor. He left and later in the afternoon I turned the A/C on to test it. Right away I noticed there was something wrong. By this time it was 5:20 p.m. I called and left a message with the answering service. Following day, Friday, I went about my day and around 3 p.m. I realized I had not received a return call. Immediately I called the company and when the person answered I asked if the answering service had turned in my message. The response was "yes" and he apologized letting me know they were short a couple of people. He scheduled a technician to come to the house between 8 and 10 a.m. Saturday, March 28. Reggie called me at 7:45 and arrived at the time he said he would be here. He went to work discovering that the motor had burned out due to the moisture from the cleaning of the coils. The motor in his truck was too big for the unit and he had to return to the company to pick another one. He also let me know he had to stop at another service call. He left my house around 11:30 a.m. At 5:11 p.m. I am still waiting for his return. I called the answering service and he was tracked down. He returned my call at 5:25 to say he was on his way back. At 6:55 p.m. he has not shown, once again I call the answering service. At 7:24 p.m. he calls me to let me know he IS on his way to the house. I questioned him what happened and he let me know he had to return to his last call. He arrived at my house at 7:51 p.m. I could tell he was tired and not in a good mood and I engaged him in conversation rather than get upset with him. I found out his day had not gone very well, he received a lot of emergency calls, one of them in Vail. He installed the new motor connecting everything back. We went inside the house and he tested the A/C. Everything started working satisfactorily. He noticed the thermostat was not responding well and he blew into it to clean any dust particles and suggested for me to consider purchasing a new one. Reggie left the house around 9 p.m. He was professional and knew was he was doing. Both techs were professional although now I realize the first tech should have tested the unit by checking to see that air was coming through prior to him leaving. Personally I feel there has to be better communication in the office and also, a way to communicate with the customer, i.e. in my case, all I knew was that Reggie had another call and then he would go pick up a new motor. I had no idea there were many other emergencies he had to respond to in between. I would have very much appreciated receiving follow up calls to advice me of his progress. This falls back with management, so I hope someone in management will read this and make sure calls are handled differently in the future.

Jeremy arrived and immediately went to work. He invited me to hear his explanation as he was opening the panels to the system. He was thorough and explained everything in language I understood. Then we looked at the unit outside the house and also in detail explained how everything works and what he looks for. He made his recommendations and, fortunately for me, the unit is still in good working order despite it's 15 years of life. Jeremy wrote a proposal for the repairs needed to help prolong the life of the unit to its full capacity and suggested three service agreements to which I agreed to one of them. Jeremy was professional and thorough. Once I approved the repairs, he started working on them right away. Now that I have the service agreement backing me up, I can expect service within 24 hours with free check ups during the year.

After checking the AC unit it was found that many of the electrical parts were marginal and could fail in the near future. It was also found that the blower motor and compressor fan bearings were failing. When looking at the cost of doing a patchwork fix compared to a 12-15 year old system a new unit install made better sense. I will refer them to others as I feel I got more than what I expected.
Description of Work: Paul checked out my 15 year old spec home AC. I knew the were problems and he confirmed it.

I told them that I wasn't interested in a "poof" package and they didn't try to sell me one. He just explained what was wrong with the hot water heater and my pipes and gave me an estimate for repairs. It was very low key and highly informative.
Description of Work: Flushed out the hot water heater and did an examination of the connecting pipes and water pressure
