I had called at 7 am one day earlier; my system was working, but not very well, so it was not urgent. The appointment was set up for 10 am Friday, the workers arrived at 7:30 on Friday! They solved the problem!
Description of Work: Nick and Mike actually arrived early, went right to work, figured out what was wrong, and what needed to be done to solve the problem. Unlike some other air conditioning servicers I have had in the past, these people did a thorough check of my system, explained clearly what had gone wrong, and what they needed to do to fix it. All in all, it was a very good experience.

Good experience overall. We called Hamstra after our old AC unit broke. They were responsive and sent someone out to provide an estimate and discuss options. The salesperson was very friendly and informative, and was not pushy at all. They provided a portable AC unit for a couple days until they could schedule the installation of the new unit. The installation crew arrived promptly and were very professional and respectful of the house, and patient with the staring eyes and questions from our young kids. We also were impressed that they called a small local company to pickup the old unit for scrap metal, instead of throwing it in the landfill. We will use Hamstra again in the future if needed.
Description of Work: Removed old, broken AC. Installed new unit. Tested and sealed ducts.

Everything was first rate from the sales rep who first came to the house to the final inspection and walkthrough. These guys were terrific. I got several estimates and Hamstra came in most reasonable for the quality of system they offered. They were extremely professional and did all the little things (and some not so little things) to make the experience a positive one for us. It was in July so the weather was very hot and was scheduled as a two day job. On the first day they spent much extra time re-connecting the system so we would no go without A/C that night. Everyone was very careful with cleanliness and ensuring that nothing in the house was damaged as they moved these big units around. I paid half up front and when the work was completed they waited about ten days before coming back to get the second payment; giving us plenty of time to use the system and be happy with it before final payment. I recommend them to everyone.

Not a hitch in the process. It was planned so well and done so well that everything fell into place as expected. They had allowed some extra time in case they ran into difficulties, but did not need to use it. We appreciated little concerns like watching out for our parrot (above) and the fact that they installed and turned on the air conditioning units (in this August heat) before even starting on the furnaces. We were "off line" with air conditioning for only 3-4 hours and we did not need the portable air conditioners they offered during that time; we were comfortable throughout (as was the parrot!) These people know their business, and they are customer-friendly as well!
Description of Work: We needed to replace two entire heating and air conditioning systems (two ends of the same old home) and, due to family health issues, decided to have the duct cleaning/testing/sealing done, as well. [Thank heaven we did! When an addition had been added 18 years ago, the builder failed to close off the ducts in one part of our house so we have been "cooling all of Arizona" since then. Yikes!] The workers from Hamstra arrived on time, professionally dressed, and as pleasant as could be. They did a masterful job of coordinating various services, installations, etc. so that our inconvenience was minimized and our special needs taken into account. For example, we have a pet parrot and they have very sensitive lungs -- Hamstra made sure we were able to have her in a safe location when the duct sealing was done, etc. After cleaning vents, cleaning out the ductwork, identifying the gigantic leak created by the construction error (above), correcting that and sealing the systems, they ran tests that showed us how much leakage had been corrected and how that should affect heating and cooling expenses. Then they removed the old units and, at the suggestion of their engineer, placed new ones in locations to maximize usable yard space. They gave us slightly different cooling units on the two ends of the house because one end absorbed more heat from the sun. The furnaces and air conditioners were installed and they were on their way!

We called Hamstra Heating and Cooling and they sent someone out right away. When Sean arrived he was very pleasant and professional. He checked out everything and found the problem quickly and was able to repair it. He answered all of our questions and gave us a detailed inspection report. Now the A/C unit works great and we are very happy that we called this company. I would absolutely recommend Hamstra Heating and Cooling to everyone!
Description of Work: Our central air conditioning unit had stopped putting out cold air. Only the fan was working and with outside temps reaching 100 degrees plus, we were getting really uncomfortable.

They were fantastic. The previous HVAC company had made a mess of our system and almost burned our house down with the inexperienced tech and poor customer service. HAMSTRA showed up on time and did a complete inspection. The tech was fantastic and explained everything and showed my husband what the previous company missed. The previous company said there were no freon leaks. HAMSTRA took the time to find out what was wrong with our system and corrected it. I am very impressed with their customer service and knowledge. I will not use another company again!!

I had interviewed five other contractors for this job. The salesman who came to my house was professional, was fine with my dogs being around while we talked and answered all the questions I had. compared to the other people who came over he seemed honest and didn't try to sell repairs or modifications that some others did. The price was a little higher but I didn't feel that there would be an added expenses once they got into it. There was some miss communication with between the salesman and the person who schedules the installation team, but we were able to make it work for the original agreed upon date. The crew came on time and the foreman was friendly and worked around my wife and dogs during the installation. They finished the same day. In general I was pleased, the salesman checked in a few times to see how things were going and to make sure we were happy. There were a few things I was displeased about though. We had to have someone come back on three different occasions to fix minor things; the heat didn't work, part of the air return was damaged, and they needed to tweak the system. These things were dealt with in a reasonable amount of time. However it shouldn't have gotten to that point in the first place. The main thing that soured my experience was the fact that there was a misunderstanding of when payment was due and that my price was $500 more than expected. This has never been resolved; even after a letter to the company, a review, and calls to the original salesman. I was only left with " Sorry that there was a misunderstanding". Additionally it took three months to receive a copy of the permit to have the work inspected and signed off.

I'm relatively unhappy with Hamstra for the following: I moved to Tucson in June 2011 and bought a new house at that time. I called them based on Angie's List reviews to come out and check out my entire HVAC system to see where things stood. Their technician inspected both of my HVAC units and said I was a bit low on freon. So between the two checks I spent $420 on the checks and an extra $100 on the freon. My wife and I both remember the technician specifically saying both units, and the coils inside, were clean except for some minor pet hair. I thought that was a bit odd because I don't believe the previous (and only) owner of the house had any pets. A month later my compressor on one of my A/C units failed. Since the seller of the house purchased a home warranty as part of my house purchase, I had to go through them and Advanced Air Mechanical had to be the service company. Their tech came out, opened up the unit, and the coils were filthy (my wife and I witnessed this), which is directly what led to the compressor failure (a $2500 repair that I, thank goodness, did not need to pay for because of the home warranty). The reason for the failure is that a small wire that holds the filter in place had been broken and air was circulating around the filter, effectively not filtering any air and dirtying the coils. Hamstra failed to detect this broken wire when they inspected the unit. I didn't much care at this point because it was all covered by the home warranty anyway. Move forward to July of 2012. I called Hamstra again to have them come out and check out my upstairs unit as it had been making a rattling sound for a few weeks. Turns out I needed a new motor and wheel. The tech also did all their normal check up procedures. I had them quote a price (which they quoted at $730). I also called Mike at Hamstra talk about the benefits of the yearly service since I had experienced two major failures (a compressor and a fan motor/wheel) since they had been out the 10 months prior. I asked him what the point is of having a yearly (or 6 month as they suggest) inspection if I still encounter two major failures (of over $3200 to fix) in the 10 months after they had been out. Mike responded by saying that I should check my unit once a month. I responded by saying I hire them to come out to do that as they are the experts. Anyway, I wasn't asking Mike for anything (refund, etc) because I know that things can come up and fail before a next checkup (although they told me my coils were clean only a month before the compressor failure in 2011), I simply wanted to voice my displeasure at having these two failures in the previous 10 months. I feel he didn't really work to keep me as a client and try to alleviate my concerns. He seemed more annoyed with my than anything and tried to talk over me during the phone conversation. At that point, even though I can't point to anything specific about Hamstra, I simply didn't feel satisfied and decided to look for another company (Brooksaire, which I will shortly or already have reviewed as well) to fix the motor/wheel. The short story is that Brooksaire replaced the motor and wheel, AND did a yearly checkup on my other until, all for $30 less than Hamstra quoted for only replacing the motor/wheel. In addition, and the reason I ultimately decided to write this negative review about Hamstra (last straw, etc etc), is that a large air leak was found by Brooksaire while replacing the motor. My unit is located in an attic and is not easy to access, so it's not something I can check for easily myself....again, which is why I hire an expert to check things. The fact that Hamstra failed to detect, both last summer and this summer, a major air leak has cost me who knows how much in inefficient heating/cooling costs as I've paying to heat and cool my attic. In summary, I would expect a company like Hamstra to send technicians who both accurately assess the dirtiness of coils, find a problem as simple (but as possibly catastrophic) as a poor filter assembly, as well as detect major air vent leaks that lead to inefficiencies. If they aren't doing these things accurately during a yearly service checkup, exactly what am I paying for? In the end I feel as if I payed Hamstra a bunch of money ($690 in all) that did nothing to prevent two catastrophic failures when two of those things should have been detected by them (the dirty coils and the failed filter assembly). Further, they failed to find a simple, but significant, air leak in vents exiting the very unit they were inspecting. UPDATE: Hamstra has never contacted me as they said they would in their response (nor do I want them to).

Everyone my wife and I dealt with was very friendly and knowledgeable. The technicians appeared very competent and the sales representative took the time to go over the many options in detail to find the one that best fit my needs and budget. While I can't say I was thrilled to unexpectedly spend $7000 to replace a unit, Hamstra did make the process as painless as possible. I would definitely use them again and recommend them to others.

Old roof top air conditioner/heat pump conked out on the weekend. Compared both Angie's list and BBB in Tucson, and came up with Hamstra and B&J. Friends recommended Hamstra, so on Sunday I called Hamstra for help. Repair techs arrived Monday, and pronounced the 35 year old unit dead. Estimator came out Monday afternoon or Tuesday morning, clearly explained the options, and signed us up for installation of a new system. He also brought portable A/C units to alleviate the heat during the installation. Essential parts of new system were cooling the house by Thursday. Hamstra personnel were friendly, considerate, competent, and efficient. Hamstra works to maintain their reputation, and offers a lifetime warranty.
Description of Work: Installation of new system includes American Standard (4WCZ60481000BA) 4 ton SEER 16 heat pump, new thermostat, electronic air filter, cleaning and sealing of ducts. Removal of old heat pump and evaporative cooler.

My A/C unit was still working but the compressor was becoming intermittent, After reading the good reviews on Angies List I called on a Friday and was able to get them to come out first thing Saturday morning for an diagnostic, the technician showed up on time, was very professional, discovered the issue and took care of it right away. The sales person that Hamstra sent, Randy, was really great. He spent an hour and a half checking out the house to determine what capacity system would do best for me. He pointed out a few things which were reducing the efficiency of my present air conditioning. My husband and I decided to go for a top of the line system with a special filtering system to reduce allergens and odors. Since we expect the new system to last for at least 20 years we did not economize but went for the best particularly because we live in southern Arizona where the summer temperatures regularly exceed 105 degrees. The work was done the next week at our request since our old air conditioning could have completely gone out at any time. The crew was extremely professional, courteous and knowledgeable. In fact, after they swapped out our registers (the old ones were ineffective and obsolete), they used our paint to touch up the walls so there was no hint of any paint damage. To make the installation faster Hamstra sent out a crew of four so that the entire installation was done in 6 hours instead of the two days that we had anticipated. I would recommend this company to any one. We plan to stay with them and after our first complimentary service visit is over in a few months, we will join their maintenance plan for twice yearly servicing of the system. By the way, we saved $200 off the price using the Angies List coupon!
Description of Work: My air conditioning and furnace system which the builder provided, and which was not top of the line, was over 15 years old. It had become less efficient, and developed a leak that would take about $1200 to fix. Rather than put that money into the system, I contacted Hamstra for an estimate of what a new system would entail.

The technician was great. However, I am becoming concerned about the path Hamstra seems to be taking as a company. I picked Hamstra last year due to the excellent Angie's List ratings and because I felt the other company I had been using was not being honest or doing a good job (a company, by the way, that had excellent Angie's List ratings when I first used them several years prior but then plummeted over the years --- it can happen, so always check the ratings before you buy!). As it turns out, I was correct about the former company b/c the Hamstra technician at the time identified a number of problems that the previous company either caused or overlooked. I was so happy to have found a reputable company. I was also pleased at the time that Hamstra did not use gimmicks like service plans, again unlike my previous company. Hamstra fixed what needed to be fixed, charged a fair price for the work performed, no more and no less. It was great. No wonder they have such good ratings on Angie's List, I thought. So, when a few months ago I opened my mail to find a brochure from Hamstra outlining its new "Service Choice Club," my heart sank. I found the "Club" details to be extremely confusing and unnecessarily complicated. Kind of seems like something that someone with a business degree or MBA would put together (and I have an MBA myself, so I kind of know it when I see it). And I didn't like it. I hope Hamstra reconsiders the path it is taking. Why sink to the level of other companies when you can perform excellent, honest work for a fair price --- no one on Angie's List has higher ratings than you guys do (or did) & I am sure that is why. I hope the recent negative rating you guys got this month from another Angie's List subscriber isn't a sign of things to come. Please don't mess with a good thing. If you do, I will certainly be taking my business elsewhere. Update: May 11, 2012 ---- I called Jeff at Hamstra back at his request (see Provider Response). We had a decent conversation, and while I hope I am unnecessarily concerned, time will tell. I will be watching subsequent Angies List reports with interest. Please prove me wrong, Jeff!

I called a couple other A/C companies but they were all booked solid. Went back on Angie's list and found Hamstra and read the reviews and saw that they worked in my area. Pleasant person answered the phone and scheduled the appointment. Jason came promptly and worked efficiently. Very pleased with their service. I would definitely use them again.

We just moved into our house in Tucson and I thought it would be a good idea to get the heat pumps checked and serviced, thinking that they are like furnaces, which need annual maintenance (I'm from the north). I picked Hamstra from Angie's list because of the rave reviews and called and scheduled a service. The technician came on time and spent a few minutes on the roof. He then went to his van and stayed there so long (more than an hour) that we went out and asked him if he was OK. He said he was filling out a report. He then came into the house with the report and said that both units were old and that he should do a leak test on the coils. We agreed and he spent a few more minutes on the roof and came back to say that the coils on both units were leaking and that they were unrepairable. He said Hamstra could do the job for about $6000, but that other parts would soon break and that we should consider replacing the units. We asked him how much new units would cost (we had no idea), but he said he would rather have a salesman come out to talk to us. We agreed, not thinking there was much alternative. We were then given an invoice for nearly $600 to cover the cost for the few minutes he spent on the roof. A few days later a Hamstra salesman showed up and went over our options as he saw them. We could get the coils replaced for $6000, get OK replacement units for a total of $14,000 installed, or (his recommendation) get two new Trane units like the ones we have installed for $18, 000. We were naturally shocked by these numbers, but because we were new to Tucson and home cooling systems, we had no way to judge them. Our neighbour gave us the name of another company and they sent their own man out. He inspected the units and said they were high quality and not particularly old. He noted what a coincidence it was that both units were leaking, and that they were both down in pressure by the same amount. He was shocked at the price Hamstra had charged for the service visit and also shocked by the prices they had quoted for replacing either the coils or the entire units. He suggested that he could charge with gas both units and come back in a few months to see if they had lost any pressure. That's what he did, and the company didn't even invoice us for the service! The serviceman came back to measure the pressure today, after two months, and said that there had been no detectable loss. He said that unless something breaks, the units won't need servicing again for four years. I leave you the reader to draw your own conclusions. I know who I will call when I do need work on my cooling system, and it won't be Hamstra.

The cooling portion of our new heating and cooling system installed in January, 2012 failed to work so we telephoned Monday morning for a service call, under warranty. A serviceman arrived hours later and found the problem. A new part was ordered from Wisconsin for overnight air, morning delivery, and barely 24 hours later the problem was fixed to our complete satisfaction. The point here is that they provided superior customer service, and any customer will tell you, that's where the really good companies shine, like this one. Thanks so much.

They removed four old swamp coolers and old heating equipment from the roof, plus the old furnace and water heater in the house and replaced with all new high efficiency units. This was a very complex job and involved new heat ducts, gas piping, electrical, and on and on. Very complicated in our view, yet we had heat in less than 48 hours and the on-demand water heater followed the next. Excellent work throughout and Zac, who bid the job, explained everything perfect. There were so many aspects, from sealing the ducts (given a computer printout of the results), duct cleaning, removing, covering, installing and on and on. This is a first rate company and will, without doubt do a good job for you. This wasn't cheap but we went high-end for everything and are totally pleased.
Description of Work: Remove four old coolers and other equipment from roof, install an entirely new heating/A-C system and an on-demand water heater.

They accommodated my need to make last-minute change in the schedule and showed up on time in the revised time frame. They diagnosed the problem, gave me an estimate, and had the parts and equipment on hand tao make the repairs right away, avoiding the need for another service call.

Everything was fixed and the system works perfectly now.
Description of Work: Jimmy was the technician that came to the house. The furnace was not heating when it was scheduled. Jimmy went through the whole system checking out every possible cause. He adjusted several things and cleaned others. I don't know what he did to fix the problem but one of the things he did corrected the problem. I sat there with him and he explained everything he did. He was extremely professional and courteous and I will use this company in the future.
