Called Hamstra after hours and spoke with Victor Anian. He clearly explained the after hours emergency fee. He followed this with an inquiry to exactly what the problem was and what efforts I had taken to identify the problem. Upon following up on his suggestion of checking the circuit breaker on the blower and discovering an arcing situation, we called Hamstra back and Victor was promptly, less than 30 minutes, at our house. Victor identified arcing issue and rectified the wiring issue.

From my first contact to the last Hamstra Heating and Cooling staff have all been very professional, courtious,polite and friendly. Never once did I feel pressured into making a decision or rushed. Everything was about me and my timetable. Any and all questions I asked were answered, no matter how many times I asked because I either didn't fully understand or recalled the answers. About two weeks later Hastra Staff called me to see how I liked the units, if there were any problems or questions they could take care of or answer. In fact they called me about two weeks ago to schedule a service check, which I foregot to call them back tochedule. I better take care of that tomorrow. Bottom line.....I'm so pleased with them and the way they all conducted themselves. Honest, Dependable, Reliable. They won't try to sell you a unit or over sell you one. They will check, evaluate, recommend, give options then let you choose which way you want to go when you are ready.
Description of Work: First they came out and sized up my house for a heating and cooling unit. Once I selected the unit, contract terms, services I wanted they then sent out a teams to seal my air ducts. This was an additional service I chose whice was well worth the extra cost. I think it was a week later they came out and installed my new units.

I think that for truth in advertising that Hamstra should place on their web site or Angies list that NO new customers are accepted during the summer. I get the part that they are busy and I did not need immediate service, but I wanted expertise advice on the purchase of a new unit that another company had stated that I needed - after spending over $500 plus dollars!! I could have scheduled a future date but that was not an option with the person answering the phone call. Very disappointed in Angie's list and the Hamstra company. They did refer me to another company ACS with the phone number.

Hamstra's technician was much more thorough than those from other companies that we've used in the past. He seemed to really take an interest in our system and its reliability. At no time did he push us to replace our entire system, as some others have in the past.
Description of Work: Annual check-up of cooling system. Resolved a couple of minor problems. Suggested and installed a device to shut off the system in case of backup of supercooled water, which had happened to us one time last year. Replaced a switch, and insulation of exterior wiring which was visibly worn. We purchased a one-year service contract for two checks, at the beginning of cooling and heating seasons, and the company will contact us to set up appointments.

It was clearly time to replace our entire A/C system and decided to to do a thorough job to include duct cleaning and sealing. Hamstra was prompt at providing their estimate (perhaps high, but worth it). We were able to coordinate a schedule and they were always right on time. Their work was excellent and the quality is clear. They proved several portable units to allow us to cool this part of the house reasonably well. We couldn't have been more pleased with the whole job. And it is clear that we have reduced our A/C energy consumption by nealy 50%. We had expected a reduction, but the numbers are showing more than we had expected. We would recommend Hamstra to anyone in need of this type of service.

As I said above, I only wish, wish, wish I could have chosen Hamstra to install my split system AC/furnace because they not only would have done an excellent job, but they would have used their professional training, knowledge and vast array of equipment to include analyzing and making the whole system perform efficiently, and each room feeling just right. If I'd only known. If I had it to do over again I would definitely choose Hamstra. Even now, although I didn't go with them, they are offering me the courteous, professional answers my own company who got my $13,000 should be answering. That is so wrong. And Hamstra is so right! I just can't say enough positive things about Hamstra, except to express my tremendous gratitude and appreciation to their owner and all his staff for their many kindness to me. Thank you.
Description of Work: Although I didn't choose Hamstra to install my split AC/heating system I sooooo wish I had. If I had known then what I know now, I'd realize that the $300 higher price was well worth it for the expertise and professional understanding Hampstra has. They have the best reputation in Tucson. Most other AC installers call them for advice when they don't know what to do. If I'd known that the AC installers were just trying to sell me a unit, get in and get out, without knowing or understanding the full job, I'd have run to Hamstra and gratefully given them my business. Now I'm learning the hard way, totally on my own for engineering, planning and developing the rest of my system (which is called my house -- ductwork design, sealing, air flow balancing, even temperatures in each room, and so much more that allows the AC to approach performing at the SEER and EER rating it was sold to me promising. That's just not true, folks, unless you already have an energy efficient house. Hamstra would have told me right away, and told me what to improve, and possibly what they can provide or who's great in town if they can't. No one else provides as much as Hamstra, I understand, as far as services and knowledge. Now I'm on my own,stuck, trying to learn the trade myself, making so many calls to everyone, researching on the internet, and calling Hamstra, who is kind enough to offer free advice with the hope that perhaps I'll buy the more effective Aeroseal sealing with them (For twice the price they offered me when they proposed to sell me an AC/heating system). I wish I had gone with the best, most knowledgeable company and had that option of also sealing my ductwork in the best way, less expensively (half the price) than I can find in town now. Hamstra's still there for me, when the company I bought the top of the line AC from won't even return calls, and won't even accept my money to seal my ducts. I am so thankful to Hamstra for answering both their questions, mine and perhaps everyone in Tucson, including other professionals, who need some of Hamstra's knowledge from the extensive training they've had. Always choose Hamstra. They're the best in town. Not only that, they have expensive testing equipment that most other installers don't buy, so they can balance the airflow in individual rooms, tell what sizes leaks your ductwork has when blowing in Aeroseal, measure all the important things in the most professional, accurate way. My company didn't even own a thermometer to tell the temperature, much less air flow, coming out of my vents. I was left to tell them how it felt and what to adjust, when I know nothing about air balancing a system or a house. Hamstra has it all, even the best, most expensive measuring equipment. I wish to thank Hamstra's staff for taking so much time to answer all my questions when I call them, even when I didn't choose them. What an amazing company!

Called Hamstra yesterday to have our a/c united checked out before starting to use it. Hamstra has been working on our new next door neighbor's home and we saw they have great ratings on Angie's List. Unfortunately, we were told by the person answering the phones that ' we are not taking new customers at this time' and she referred us to another company. Disappointing. We called another company, also with good ratings, but not the one the woman at Hamstra recommended. Our unit was checked out today. It's working fine for now, but is 16 years old and not very efficient, so we will be replacing it this month with a completely new ac/heat system.

Excellent. All work was completed in about an hour. Matt was professional and patient. Even though he had to look at the other company's work and fix it, he did not complain. He suggested that I provide the other company with feedback so that the technician would understand the issue in the future.
Description of Work: Repaired two Rudd heaters to get them working. Heater 1: A few years ago another company had installed new board and a new remote flame sensor kit and did not get it to work. Heater 2: A few years ago another company had installed new board and did not get the heater to work. I got busy and never followed through with that unnamed company. Hamstra was recommended and completed the following work: Heater 1: found multiple wires in incorrect locations which did not follow schematic. Retraced schematic to find problem, rewired and tested. Heater 2: Found that a new new board was installed with prior company but no new flame sensor was installed. (I, owner had purchased remote flame sensor on line thinking it was the issue with one of the heaters...good thing for me.) Hamstra installed the remote sensor and now both heaters are working.

We have had a service contract with Hamstra for over 10 years, so when our Heat Pump died last month we contacted Hamstra for an estimate on a new unit. Randy arrived promptly with complimentary loaner space heaters, and got to work. He came back with an estimate to replace the broken heat pump (a package unit) and the other functioning heat pump (a split unit) with a single unit, a reworking of the duct work, and a price tag of $25000. This was too much for us, and I was not sure of the merits of the plan to put in a single unit given that it would need extensive reworking of the duct system in a 14 year old home. Next the owner, Jeff Hamstra, came out with Randy and they agreed re-working the duct system was NOT the the best plan, so Randy went back to work and returned with an estimate of two new heat pumps (one packaged unit and one split unit) for $23000. Again this was far more than we expected to pay for new heat pumps for our 2200 square foot home. When I questioned Randy about the costs, I learned that many other things had been bundled into the cost, including Hamsta's own extended warranty, duct sealing, duct cleaning, UV air purifier, dynamic air filter kits, and more. I told Randy I wanted the base price for each unit and then the extra items listed separately. He seemed mildly annoyed, and his short email back to me was "I'll start working on it but I can't guarantee I'll have everything before the rebates end." (I subsequently learned from another company that American Standard had no rebates about to end. This seems now like a push to get us to sign the deal quickly.) Randy did manage to come back to tell me that I could get the package unit for $8600, and separately the split unit for $13000, but if I did both together it would only be $17000. This was frustrating, as I never felt I could clearly evaluate the costs. At this point, I joined Angies list, found another company, and pursued additional quotes. I told Randy I was going to get some comparison quotes. The other company arrived promptly, gave a clear estimate with itemized options, and one that provided a higher quality unit for less cost. We decided to go with the other company. I then sent Randy at Hamstra the following email: "Thanks for all the time you've spent with us researching options. We received the other quote from a company in business for 40 years and highly recommended, and we will get an American Standard two-stage package unit for the roof, with variable speed motor and 16 SEER rating, and at enough lower cost that we feel this is best for us at this time. We need to arrange to return the space heaters to you. [Call ____] and we can set up a time." His reply was unprofessional: "[COMPANY NAME] has had new owners in last 8 years. and there is no 16seer system that is the right size for your home. but please go ahead make a mistake." Worse yet was his behavior when he arrived to get the space heaters. He was rude to my wife, would not come in to get the space heaters (making her haul them down to him), and kept on saying "just go ahead and make a mistake" with a clearly hostile tone. She was quite upset about her interaction with him. After this, I wrote Jeff Hamstra, the owner, the following email. He has yet to respond (now 25 days later). Hamstra has lost our business. ___ Email to Jeff Hamstra, Feb 7 Dear Jeff: You may have learned from Randy that we ultimately decided to accept a quote from another company. I appreciate the time that you and Randy took to evaluate our needs. In the end, I found it frustrating to get a clear idea of why Hamstra's costs were higher. I recognize that you have a very high quality of service that we've come to expect, and as a result I expected to pay a bit more. When the cost was considerably more than expected, I wanted to know where the costs were coming from, and it was only through persistent questioning that I found that a variety of options had been bundled into Randy's quote (e.g., your extended warranty, a UV purifier, dynamic air filters, duct sealing that later you determined was not necessary, etc). I found it difficult to get the information I was looking for in this process working with Randy. I think that Randy means well, and tries hard, but as a consumer I would have preferred more transparency. I would prefer to see a base price with options listed separately, which ultimately I discovered through considerable time and effort on my part. I also wanted to share with you the recent correspondence below. You can see my email to Randy letting him know of our decision. I am sure he was disappointed, but I found his response unprofessional, and it surely reflects his frustration. I can appreciate that after spending time with us and preparing several quotes, he might feel frustrated. But I also know that a good employee does not allow the frustration to be shared with the customer, as is evident in his parting jab: "but please go ahead and make a mistake." That's a sarcastic and unnecessary and unprofessional comment. I know you pride yourself on the customer service offered by your employees, and I know you'd want to know that in this instance, Randy fell short of that standard. Best regards
Description of Work: Estimate for new heat pump for a 1998 home with one package unit, one split unit, following the package unit dying at the end of January. We ultimately did not purchase from Hamstra, due to high price and frustrations with the sales people (described below). After we informed them of our decision, unprofessional conduct by the salesman and nonresponse by the owner were proof to us we'd made a good decision not to choose Hamstra.

The salesman was really nice and his name was Sack. He was trying to do all sorts of things to make it more energy efficient. I took a contract with them to see all the list of things that they could do. But, they subsequently hired some sub contractors to do the duct work. But, I already had a coupon to get the air duct cleaned.

I have a long term contract and I pay them to come out twice a year. They did the original installations. I pay about $1,000 a year. They have to climb on top of the house. They are a local company. It is a family business and they have done a great job for me. I've used them for years and years and I don't know what other people charge. I'm not going to change.

The guy came out and checked the system.Coolant was low and he found a leak in the condenser. He gave a date for him to a replacement condenser. He called back to let me know the condenser was out of stock, and gave a new date. He showed up on the new date and fixed all.

The office staff who set up my appointment was professional and nice to deal with. The technician called ahead of time to say he was on his way. He introduced himself as Nick....he was clean with his work and professional. When he finished he said the system was running normal. The system we have is 5 to 6 years old and just wanna make sure we get the best performance from the unit. He explained that there are different levels of cleaning and service options they provide. I will be looking into these services.
Description of Work: Seasonal start up. Checked heating unit and cleaned filter.

Very punctual and professional company. Would have definitely used them except for the price was a bit too much for me but they did offer a quality product.

They were a good company. I called them to get a second opinion and decided that they were more reputable. I had them install a surge protector for me and will be calling them for a check here shortly.
