The work to be performed and various quality options were thoroughly explained before signing the contract. We opted for the 7 year warranty paint job and roof coating. There were three year and five year options available for less money. Everything was washed, patched, caulked and masked well before paint application and there was no damage to plants or paint where it shouldn't be. James came by after the finish of the job and did a walking inspection of the work with us to make sure we were happy. He also made a video of the second story flat roof surface for our examination. We had leaks around our windows before the new paint job and after the test of a few monsoon rains the leaks are gone..
Description of Work: Pressure washed and patched stucco and flat roof. Painted exterior two story stucco with two coats of Dunn Edwards Evershield without thinning.. Painted metal side entrance gates. Coated roof with two coats of Elastomeric roof coating at package consistency.

Pressure washer didn't seem directly employed by the same company, but it wasn't a problem. The washing seemed like it could have been more thorough, there was debris still on some tin awnings. Actual painting crew was uniformed, professional, clean. We are very happy with the result, house looked like new. James came by and carefully reviewed the work and talked to us about what to watch and how things went with a lot of attention to detail.
Description of Work: House about 1440 square feet. Pressure wash and prepare exterior synthetic stucco. Apply clear coat and paint to synthetic stucco. Apply paint to garage door and front door. Stain wooden structures around porches.

We liked everything. It was very timely. He gave us a very comprehensive list of work that was going to be done in repairs and painting and he followed through with all that.
Description of Work: I used Five Star Painting for exterior painting on a 2 story house.

Overall the two workers that completed 90% of the work were excellent. They were on time, worked hard, cleaned up each day, and kept us informed of the work progress and helped us through some tough decisions along the way. The work that they did with the standard paint was excellent. I gave responsiveness and punctuality a bad rating due only to Five Star's failure to return and finish the job. As far as the owner, James, we believe he must be overcommitted to other jobs and could not find the time to do the faux job as had been promised. So he "trained" the others to do it in his absence. This was why we hired Five Star, and why we are disappointed in the faux finish. We hired Five Star specifically because we believed James would do the specialty painting, not his helpers.
Description of Work: We got a recommendation from the paint store that he buys from, that he was the best in Tucson. That may be but that doesnt bode well for Tucson painters. We had Five Star bid the job, total interior including trim, some cabinets, doors, etc. We had initally planned on having them just do the living room in a faux finish, but decided to have them bid the entire interior. The bid was competitively priced and James committed to doing the faux himself as that was a specialty of his. He wanted to show his workers how it was done but he told us he would be doing the faux. The work crew showed up and began work on the bedrooms, baths, hallways, etc, leaving the living room for James to faux. The work went well and we were impressed by the professionalism. When it was time for the faux, James began the work and showed the others how it was done. His work was good and we agreed that the wall that he had completed was acceptable. Then he handed the job to his workers and left. This was a total surprise to us, and not at all what we had agreed upon in the initial proposal. We asked that two of the walls be redone because they were so glaringly different from the 1st wall. The walls were redone but the finish look was still noticeably different. Looking back we should have demanded that James do the faux as was initially promised. The idea that you could hand off a somewhat complex paint job to your workers after 30 minutes of training is absurd, and this was as much our fault for not demanding James to do the job himself. James also promised to finish the fireplace (concrete) trim and arch, but after many calls and broken commitments we have decided to just do it ourselves. We dont think he will return even though he promised to get over and have it done. I would use Five Star for routine painting, but not for creative interior work.

Response from Five Star Painting
The above rating is true and accurate. The members Live in an area I typically don't serve due to the additional time and expense involved. Bless their hearts, They are wonderful people and dealing with them was a pleasure. Managing my workload is a full time job by itself, I should have turned down the job. But I love my trade and sometimes miss doing the work myself. All my customers deserve first rate service and and prompt response. This was a learning experience and I will no longer commit to work in a place that requires my daily presence. I have worked in this town providing quality work and fair prices for over ten years. I have a great reputation for a reason and it this is a reminder that I can't over commit.

I found this company, run by owner James Linville, on the advice of my home inspector Marc Richter. He gave me two names, and I had both out for estimates on some exterior stucco repair. Both estimates were roughly similar, but in fact James was slightly lower, AND he enthusiastically walked me through the process and details of what his team would do during the repair. This guy loves his work, that is obvious. He is a third generation paint guy and it's his passion. I had him booked to do this exterior repair work, but then as we approached the closing, we realized we needed some extensive INTERIOR paint work. So over he came to consult on this job first, before the stucco repair. He got us a lot of free samples from Dunn Edwards to put on the wall to test colors before we committed, and it helped mightily. I will add that when I showed up with my daughter in tow to collect my samples, and stated I was here to pick up samples ordered by James at Five Star Painting, the guy at Dunn Edwards nodded knowingly and made comments to the effect that James' company was highly respected in their Tucson painting professional circles. They showed up on time to do the work. His two workmen were very professional and polite and fairly clean. The quality of their work is excellent. It's very easy to categorize painters as a commodity: a dude with a brush and a can of paint. That may be fine for some industrial concrete wall, but for a fine home, it does NOT work! My job had some areas needing a skilled and steady brush hand. His guys know their business and do a great job. They found additional minor items to fix and did not charge extra for this. During and after the work, James inspects everything with the customer and if he notes some issues, he'll get them made right. He noted a few areas of missing caulk during the job completion walk-through with me, and took great pains to get it corrected. His guys do great stucco repair, AND he successfully matched a color for me (through the Dunn Edwards store) to paint a small separate area the prior owner had used poorly-matched paint to cover. I'm having his group over to tackled the EXTERIOR issues next, and will post a review of that.
Description of Work: Stucco repair, painting three rooms, including trim painting, extensive resurfacing of one wall.
