They were there on time, clean, explained what needed to be done, did not try to sell me more than what I needed, and when I looked online for the parts their price was vey fair!

To prove his point he took a piece of the same material he had on his truck and wet it. He wrapped it in a paper towel so that the insulation absorbed the wetness and left it with us to see if that was the smell. After a few hours we opened the paper towel sure enough there was the smell. He was right! He recommended several options including redoing the main junction box with metal ductwork and possibly putting in an purification system. The cost ranged from a hundred dollar for the ductwork to a thousand dollars for air system. He gave us some literature about the air purification system and suggested that we decide if we want to do just the duct or the duct and air purification system. He wasn?t the least bit pushy and only wanted to solve the problem. This is what I call REAL CUSTOMER SERVICE. As a D&H Guardian Maintenance customer they didn?t even charge us to diagnose the problem. I guess this is the reason they been around since 1959.
Description of Work: My wife has allergies and every time our system would turn on (Summer or Winter) she smelled an odor coming from the Grate Room ceiling register. Our previous AC COMPANY, who we had a Maintenance Contract with, had searched numerous times to find the source of the smell. They would always say, "They don't smell it. They can't find it." They suggested that we have the ductwork cleaned and disinfected. After that the smell got even worse. Finally disgusted with their service I called D&H to see if they could solve the problem. The tech searched my attic for about an hour found that our ductwork and junction boxes are made out of Foil Coated Cardboard with Insulation inside it instead of metal. D&H’s tech discovered that when the old company had cleaned and sprayed a disinfectant into the ducts they had completely saturated the insulation in the main junction box and it now has a residual smell.

D&H installed two AC units at my house several years back and I have used them for service ever since. However, every summer, one of the AC units (the same one) dies on me for some reason. There is obviously some fundamental flaw in the unit, but they act as though they couldn't care less. They are more than happy to take money for repairs, but have no interest in trying to resolve the situation. This year, a tech came out and told me that coolant was leaking and that my options were spending a lot of money to try to fix the leak or spending a ridiculous amount of money to replace the unit. Not satisfied with the options, I opted to research further. I got in contact with a guy that several contacts knew and used, and while he verified that I had a coolant leak, his quote for a repair was less than 1/3 of the D&H quote and the replacement option was about 1/2 of D&H's best price. Oh, and the guy got the AC unit blowing cold air again that day. He even crushed D&H on the coolant charge - he charged about 1/4 of what D&H offered. I will NEVER use D&H again. In my opinion, they just want to get you to spend as much money as they can.
Description of Work: D&H came out to investigate why my AC unit was no longer blowing cold air.

We called and scheduled an appointment and asked that they call 30 minutes prior to arrival. They did just that and in fact called twice. They did a complete walk through and went over all of our options. We decided our best option was to purchase 2 new units. They then sent out a guy to take all the measurements. Once again, right on time. We scheduled a date for install (this all happened within 3 days). The guys came out on time, were very professional and courteous, I gave them a tour of where the units were and they went right to work. They worked straight through and were done before the estimated time. They cleaned up after themselves and went through the systems to ensure I understood everything. I was very happy with the job they did.

The company's service tech's missed several key/crucial issues that were wrong with my unit during services. From the previous owner when the coil unit was replaced, the supply duct work connecting the unit to the attic in the garage was never properly connected. For a year I was cooling and heating my garage. I found this problem when noticing how cool my garage was. Another issue this posed was when the unit would start up, it would suck hot air from the attic into the system to blow into my home and continue to mix with the cooled air the unit was creating---the opposite would occur in the winter. When asking service techs to inspect my attic on their service call, they neglected to notice the LARGE hole in the duct work that was immediately next to the attic access space that was again letting hot/cold air in/out from the attic and into the rest of my house depending on the season. They also did not notice that the dryer vent, also immediately next to the attic access space was not connected to the roof vent to expel the lint. Lint was blown everywhere inside my attic creating a fire hazard. The lint vent disconnect was also directly above the hole in the duct work resulting in lint being sucked into the duct work, unit and subsequently blown everywhere in my house. There has been a drastic decrease in the amount of "dust" inside my house since I have corrected these two problems myself. This could have been corrected on initial service visits in 2011 had techs actually performed the inspection that their service plan states. With the amount of duct disconnect, a service repair company estimated there was 40% air loss into the garage alone. I have had my HVAC unit serviced by D&H for over a year, unaware of their company's service reputation and employees unethical practices. Last summer I replaced the condenser blower fan on the outside unit as it was running over amps--as recommended by the D&H tech on the seasonal service call. I took the tech's recommendation as an HVAC "professional" as to what would be helpful to my unit to keep it running through the summer and monsoon season as my unit is older and needed replaced in the near future. This summer (2013) when having my unit checked out by another company and getting quotes on a new HVAC system for my home, I was informed that the fan was actually an emergency (rescue) fan that is only put in for 2 weeks to "hold" the unit and should then be replaced by the permanent fan. This fan has been in my unit for a year now. It was sold to me as the real, permanent fan, at a cost of $630. The labels/stickers indicating this were purposefully removed by the D&H tech which indicated it was a rescue fan when it was installed. I have found that this company has many unethical practices, they don't do the right thing to start with and they are out to make a buck at your expense. Their techs constantly told me different things about my system---If my unit indeed needed something, the service reports should have been consistent across service visits. Their techs are paid on commission, so while you think they are there on a service call, they are actually there on a sales call. On several occasions techs also recommended their "buddy" to me for parts, services or equipment for a side job at a cheaper price than D&H. It seems their employees would rather work with a friend's company on the side and get a kick-back, then do an honest job for their employer. I think that speaks volumes for the company and their employees. Make sure you watch any tech coming into your home to be sure they are actually SERVICING your HVAC not just dusting of the unit and hanging out in your garage for 30 mins. Part of their plan is to not actually provide preventive services so when your unit does break, you are at their mercy for an after hours/emergency call, which of course, costs more. Don't get taken advantage of by this company. I contacted the company regarding the rescue fan that was sold to me as a permanent fan. The sales rep told me he wasn't with the company last summer and therefor couldn't correct the problem. He said he could only forward to a manager. I am still waiting for a return call from D&H's "manager" regarding my call and complaint about being sold a rescue fan and being ripped off by their company. In the mean time, I will be posting my experience with their unethical company, poor sales practices and company's disregard for safety and HVAC codes anywhere and everywhere I can to hopefully help others avoid the experience I had. Please check out this company's history on other sites also. BBB shows a 3 year complaint history. They have also changed their name at least once for reincorporating purposes, example: from "D&H" to "D and H" or other variations with the Heating/Cooling suffix. The saying "you get what you pay for" is ringing true with this company. While they may be less expensive than other companies in town, you wont be getting a quality service.
Description of Work: I had my HVAC system serviced by D&H for over 1 year, from fall of 2011 until Summer of 2013. I had a condenser blower fan installed 6/6/13, that was not only unnecessary, but the part sold to me was misrepresented as a permanent fan when it was actually only a 2 week rescue fan.

I have had a service contract for about 7-8 years with D & H. It is not the repairs, if they made them at all, that I am writing about but, the unethical way I accidently found out from one of their service people about how they operate. It seems the repair person is paid a commission on the amount he charges for the work needed to be done. (I say needed to be done as, since I had a yearly contract with them, and they checked the heating and airconditioning system each year, they then gave me a price as what was necessary to avoid breakdowns in the near future). I trusted their expertise and, when given the details about the parts wearing out, and what should be replaced now in order to avoid an emergency repair in the future, without question, agreed to the work and the estimated price. I have no way of knowing if the information given me was accurate. On 4/27/2012 I had them replace an old, still working, but out of date thermostat. I had already priced a number of Honeywell thermostates at Lowes and at most, it ran about $60.00. I decided to have them install it rather than a handyman I've been using since I've had them do all the other work associated with our system. The price was $307.00. This was to unhook about 6 to 8 wires from the old thermostat and, reconnect it to the new one, maybe it took 10 minutes tops. When I complained to the serviceman that the cost seemed out of line, he said I should call the office and talk to his manager about it. I did, and he refused to change the price. I paid, and stopped using their services after that. Anytime we need repair work done on our house, car, appliances, etc., TRUST is where a long lasting relationship begins and continues as tthe years go by. D & H has lost my trust and lI do not recommended using them.

Tuesday Sept 4th about 10P our A/C blower motor started howling, loud. I shut down the unit but here in Tucson we were still in our ''Monsoon" season. About midnight turned the A/C back on an cooled down the house for sleeping. Called D&H A/C at 8.05A Sept 5th. They sent a Service Tech about noon. The Service Tech, Rene, was very knowledgeable, I had lots of questions, since the unit was only 5 years old. He pointed out all the rust and calcium buildup on the blower motor. We had, in the past a humidifier attached to our unit. Because it was a variable speed motor that they didn't have in stock, it was ordered. Rene went over all the charges completely. I agreed, and they ordered the motor. Not because of D&H's fault a wrong motor was sent. D&H called me, explained the problem and was overnighted the correct one. Rene came back on the 11th, took our unit apart and cleaned the rust and calcium off. Then painted the unit. After installing the blower motor he did a complete check of our system, tightened wires and explained as he went along. Very satisfied with D&H A/C, price, service, service tech.
Description of Work: Repair blower motor and remove rust and calcium from the unit.

Great service. The complete heat pump checks are twice-a-year services performed under a contract, which is reasonably priced. They do a thorough job, including cleaning of the insides if necessary. They give a good report of their findings and don't try to find a problem so they can sell you something The techs are well-educated and informative. I asked about surge suppressors because we have very "dirty" power here which is made worse by lightning. Their price was quite fair and the work prompt and neat. We've used D&H for 7 of the 8 years we've lived here. They've installed 2 mini-splits and replaced 2 aging heat pumps. We've been very happy with their service and definitely recommend them.

They are still working on the issue. When the house was being built, I had asked the contractors and neighbors for recommendation for a heating company. This company was suggested to me at that time. I used them for another property I have and their work there was fine. I am not sure what the problem with this property is. It is an ongoing problem. They are nice people. I had been to their store before I had started using them. The fabrication work was not part of their job. I am not sure if the problem is because of them or the manufacturer. They show up when they say they would. I would use them again after seeing how they handle the existing problem.
Description of Work: I have been D&H Air Conditioning & Heating Co. Inc. They put in the heating and air conditioning units when the house was built. My most recent interaction with them was six months ago. They will need to change the evaporating units in two of the three units.

I called the company and they scheduled a sales call the next morning indicating I would get a call about 10-15 minutes before he arrived. He arrived early without a call. The sales rep (an older gentleman) 'sized me up' as a female without much knowledge of technical things and proceeded to sell me his unit telling me "I know how scary a big job like this can be." Assuming that I was "frightened" of this "big" job was somewhat insulting. I took him to the electric panel so he knew what his line would have to tie into. The sales rep could not open the panel, he didn't know what he was looking at when he saw it saying "Oh yes, this is an electrical panel", and also I had to close it for him after he fumbled with it for several minutes. He then wanted to sit down so that we discuss the options and pulled out a slick flyer with pre-printed prices on it (which was nearly 50% higher than any other estimate that I had received). By then I had enough and am glad I did not use them after reading some of these reviews.

It cost me $10,000 to replace the inadequate system they installed. I asked for top of the line, best they could do, and they charged me over $11,000, which was substantially more than other contractors but I wanted the best. System was inadequate from the beginning: I could never get the house below 82, and that was only if I shut off two rooms and started the AC early in the morning. They responded when I called, but all they ever did was replace the thermostat and adjust the air vents. System was clearly underpowered but they wouldn't admit or replace it. They were clearly incompetent. Finally I asked them to remove the equipment and give me at least some of my money back. They totally refused. I spent another $1000 to have a lawyer write them a letter; they just responded with a letter from their lawyer. I couldn't afford to go further legally so had to have the entire system removed and replaced by an excellent and extremely capable contractor (Hamstra) and gave the old system to charity. I'm very happy with my new system and it cost $1000 less than D&H charged for their good quality but too small system. NEVER TRUST THIS COMPANY.

We had to replace it for several reasons because the water heater was getting to the age where we thought that we had to replace it even though it was working fine. D & H were recommended by my husband?s friend at work. They did a good job and they followed up. If we had any problems, they were very prompt to check it out. It has been a great energy saver. They explained everything to us and we chose exactly what we wanted. We have been very happy with it as well. We did get a tax rebate. The system has worked because there was a saving in the amount of energy used according to the gas bill of November 2009 and November 2010. It was not necessarily the price, but the amount of energy used was about 45% less. It has saved electricity too because of the heat pump. So it was a very good thing. The heat pump and the air conditioning unit itself had more capacity and ability to heat than the old one. The old one didn?t meet the building code any longer. So that made it much more efficient and that?s one reason which saved the electricity a lot. The price was comparable with anything else we shopped for. It takes a little longer to look out for them. The only problem we had with them was that they sent a bill to someone else with our last name. I waited for the bill and I then went down there. I looked around and asked them to find it. I couldn?t blame them since it was an error made by the computer. I would use their services in the future too.

Unit was installed and next day it quit. The next day, technicians came out and said wiring was shorted so they installed new wiring. Air conditioner wouldn't cool correctly because thermostat was installed in kitchen which is not centrally located and exposed to temperature variations due to cooking. Technicians explained that they needed six wires for system but old thermostat location only had five wires. I am somewhat familiar with electrical stuff so I dug around old thermostat location and found two bundles of five wires each going between thermostat and new air handler heat pump. I rewired the new thermostat into old location and it has worked ok. Last year had D H repair unit which required a new capacitor for $185, they were suprised I had Angie's discount coupon for $50 off. Total cost was $244. Later found capacitor on line for about $50. The D H tech also noted wiring from house to compressor was left outside of covered bundle and would melt in Arizona heat but DH office said they would not fix their own installation unless I paid $85 as the warranty ran out. Overall a negative experience. Recently called them about installation on a rental and the salesperson said he would take care of the wiring in a couple of days regardless if I chose them for the job. They did not fix it and subsequently I'm going with another company.

We made contact with this company at the home show in January, 2010, and were impressed by the professionalism and knowledge of the consultant/design manager, John Roelle. He came out and made a thorough inspection of our existing system and made recommendations. We signed a contract at that time. He said they could install the new system two days later, but we had conflicts so made arrangements for installation a week later. The installers arrived on time about 8 AM, and they completed the work about 4:30 PM. John showed up to check on their progress midway through the day. The installers were very professional and really knew their business. It took a couple hours longer than they expected because there were a few glitches. (They had to remove an old concrete pad for the old compressor unit and replace it with a prefab pad which fit the new unit perfectly. They had to remove a concealing fence around AC compressor that was inappropriate for and would not work with the new unit. A part was missing from furnace/AC unit, but was quickly brought out to them so work could continue.) They found the easiest work route, having to work on both parts of the system simultaneously, was through the sliding glass door in our master bedroom into the hallway where the furnace/AC unit is housed, but they put down tarps which kept the carpet clean. They did an excellent job of cleaning up, and they hauled away the old units and the fencing from around the compressor which had to be removed. The primary inconvenience for us, over which they had no control, was having to have the door open on a cool, somewhat rainy day, and having no water for a large part of the day with which to flush toilets and wash. (Fortunately we have a swimming pool that supplied water to refill toilet tanks for flushing! If you have to have a water heater replaced, you need to be prepared with some buckets of water for that purpose!) We have two dogs that had to be kept shut into another room all day (except for walks), since the doors and gate to the back yard were open. I probably should have taken them to "doggy day care" for the day, but they did OK. The installers lined the furnace closet walls with duct (?) board to insulate it for sound, and it made a terrific difference. We hear very little roar from the furnace anymore. They brought everything up to current code. They will come back when it warms up in the spring to ensure the AC is operating as it is supposed to. Though it was an expensive outlay, we are extremely pleased with D&H and the results of our purchase. We will definitely use them again to service our units as needed, and, based upon our experience, we recommend their company.
Description of Work: D&H installed a new Amana AC/gas furnace system and gas hot water heater, replacing nearly 20-year old items. Also included a new touch-screen programmable thermostat.

It all went fine! I was so happy I didn't need a whole new air conditioner, as I learned you're supposed to have these things checked, serviced once or twice a year. I've been here for 10 years and have NEVER had it done. Company representative showed me the exact piece that had burnt out and told be how much a new one would cost. As the pipe had been icing up, I knew I would also need some free-on(sp?) Rene was here for a total of about 30 - 45 minutes to get the job done. Everything is working great. I am waiting for information on regular servicing.
Description of Work: Representative from this company arrived and was extremely courteous and explained exactly what was going to happen. (ie: first the diagnosis, etc.) I explained that I had been away from home for several weeks and that when I returned home one of the 2 A/C/ units in my home wasn't cooling (not a good thing in Tucson, Arizona in July!). Was told that I needed a "contactor" and would also need free-on replaced. Rene did the work quickly and efficiently. All quick and relatively painless!

The sales person made errors on the estimate form that resulted in the wrong unit being installed. It wasn't until prime cooling season that were discovered the problem (it's on the roof, so not easily accessible). It took their techs 4 hours to determine that the reason it wasn't working properly was because it was the wrong unit. The sales person told me he cannot fix the situation until his supervisor returns from vacation in a week. Thankfully it's keeping the house cold, so at least we're not suffering.
Description of Work: Install a new HVAC unit on the roof and remove the old Evap cooler from the roof.

Not well. Even before looking at the air condtioner the tech immediately went into talking about replacement Well, maybe he knew how much it was going to cost to fix the ac, but I did not know. I got the impression that they wanted to sell me a new unit. I would have taken this better if he had just looked at everything first, gave me the cost to fix it, and THEN talked to me about replacement. After talking, he went back to his truck, brought me the estimate, then left. He forgot to put back the air filter, left the heater open, and left the air conditioner on even though it had a serious leak. Well, I ended up replacing both the ac and heater, and did not call this company for a bid. Very sloppy tech, thought this might extend to the whole company.
Description of Work: came to fix known air conditioner leak and get unit ready for summer.

Very punctual and professional visit for estimate. Prompt responses to questions by phone and email. Work scheduled promptly. Installers arrived on time, worked quickly and were responsive to questions. Assessment of flow and adjustment of room vents was not as comprehensive as we expected, but resulted in definite improvement. After installers left, I looked over the manuals and warranty certificates and noted that the coil installed over the furnace was not specified for the new R-410 refrigerant used in the new 15 SEER A/C unit, which runs at a higher pressure. Our salesperson responded promptly to my call and, within an hour, called back confirming that the wrong coil had been installed. He apologized that their staff had not noticed and then installed non-matching equipment sent by the Rheem distributor. Another installer was out the next day to replace the coil. We were impressed with the quick and open acknowledgment of the error and the prompt remedy. Also, the initial paperwork included an incorrect warranty certificate and did not include an ARI certificate for the high efficiency unit. Both were emailed to me within a day of my request.
Description of Work: Replaced HVAC system with more efficient Rheem system.

We have used D & H for 2 years and they are very professional, on time and trustworthy. Their cost is very competitive. If you have to have them out between visits, they do not charge for a house call, although they do charge extra for the repair. We have been very happy with the service and will continue to have them service our heating and cooling needs. We would recommend them.
Description of Work: We have a contract with them that includes 2 service calls a year. They perform a routine check and cleaning on 2 central air conditioners and the gas furnace.
