American Handyman sent someone out to work on my deck. I've had this project done before so I have a general idea of the work involved, time it takes, and cost of the project. I had already cleaned the deck off and all they really had to do was the sanding. When they arrived with the rented sander the worker was unable to handle the sander. He kept saying he couldn't get it to move right. Home Depot said they have a lighter weight sander that they could rent out. After picking up the different machine the worker was handling the machine better but was taking too long to sand the deck. He was going so slow that he was sanding too much wood off the deck. Half of the deck took about 2 or 3 hours and I asked him to speed up, which he did. In the end I expected it to cost about $250 but it turned out to be $410. They didn't give me any cost break due to the fact that we had to rent multiple pieces of equipment.

The first day a very nice handyman came out and spend 7 hours at our house. He wasn't able to complete the job, and could not hook up the gas. He felt we had the wrong part from the range supplier to hook up the gas. The next day we called American Handyman and told them the problem. They sent another handyman and he spent 2 hours here and was able to hook up the gas with the parts from the range supplier. He also look at a problem we had with our roof and gave us advice. We had to pay for 9 hours of work to complete this oven installation job, we feel it could have been done in 4 hours.
Description of Work: I hired this service to install a new range. The job required removing the old stove top and wall oven. Some carpentry work was required to remove countertop. Some gas and electric hook-up knowledge was needed. The provider came out twice to complete the job.

I can't say I was real satisfied with them. The quality of the work was good but what they promised in terms of their time commitment was way off. They replaced the drywall and I ended up doing the painting of the drywall because it was just taking them too long to follow through. The people who did the work was very good. Like I said, the quality of the work was good, it was just the way they committed the work in terms of the time schedule and what they actually followed through on were not the same and I was not happy with that.

I got this company from Angie's List and I really like those people and I still use them. The price they charged me was reasonable. They're fine and we use them all the time for different things when I need something done. I am so thrilled that the person that's coming to my house calls me and I really like that before they come they call. I just like that that they just don't show up. When they told me what time they're gonna come, they'll come on time.

The repair guy did a good job listening to what I wanted done. He check in with me to make sue I was agreeable to each step and if there was any changes. He made good decisions about materials. He left me with instructions on when I could use the pet door so the materials had sufficient time to dry.

I thought the price was kind of high but I'm not familiar with how much other handymen services charge. Because I'm in Arizona and we have such low humidity we have to come up with creative means of cooling the home. We use an evaporative cooler. It's not refrigeration and I had the company that came out to install it 5 years ago, come out twice and they really messed it up. Their technicians were not trained. I was charged $100 for each time they came and they goofed it up more than they fixed it. A local handyman that was working at my neighbors house, he came over and 'micky moused' my cooler a little bit, and he kept saying, "I can't believe they did this to you," to my son-in-law. He then adjusted some things. Then I got this handyman who did a wonderful job. He was knowledgeable he didn't expect to spend so much time at my house but the cooler was messed up to the point where it took a lot of work to get it in working condition. Leveled water was leaking out my roof, he replaced a couple of part, let me know what he needed and I ran to the hardware store and picked up a few things while he worked on my cooler. He worked very hard and it's very hot here. He's very prompt. I called that morning expecting service in 2 or 3 days and they were there by noon. I was very pleased with the service. I felt very comfortable with this man having total access to my home, even though I've never met him before. I left my home open so he could get inside to use the controls as well as get outside. And I felt very comfortable with him being here at my home unattended while I went to the hardware store. He was very professional, friendly and I would definitely hire them again for another job if its within their level of expertise. It took him almost 4 hours.

When I called to make the appointment they were very friendly and accomodating. I explained that I had one hole in the wall where a sunken toilet paper holder was removed and I provided approximate dimensions. There were also several holes where an alarm company cut the dry wall to feed a cable through the wall then replaced the cut-out. I wanted those patched. Overall there were spots in three rooms that needed repairing. The person arrived at the appointed time and I showed him the areas. I had the paint for each wall set out next to it with the exception of the laundry room which I asked him not to paint because the whole room was going to be painted and I didn't have the paint to match the existing color. When he told me he would have to go to the hardware store to buy sheet rock I was surprised. I was very clear on the phone that there was a hole and I even provided the size of it He left and returned an hour later with the material he needed to do the job. It was 10am by then. He proceeded to do the work and then showed it to me when he finished. It was fine (although I had to touch up the paint later because he didn't completely cover it.) He let me know he painted the areas in the laundry room. Again I was surprised since I told him not to and I didnt even have matching paint. When I asked what he used, he indicated a can of paint on a table in there (there were almos twenty cans of various colors since I just had the majority of the interior painted.) I'm sure he didn't realize it but he used the Citron paint ($55/gallon) designated for the sky lights in the house to paint an area in a room that is going to be repainted anyway. When I mentioned it was the wrong color and reminded him it was going to be repainted he pointed out that at least it was primed for the new color. He went out to his truck and came back with the bill which I paid. After he left I looked at it and I couldn't tell if he charged me for 3.5 hours or 5.5 hours. Since he left at 1:15 I was confused. I called the company and asked for the hourly rate. It turns out he charged me for 5.5 hours. When I questioned it I was told they charge the hourly rate for travel time one way (45 minutes according to them.) I explained that I didn't think I should have to pay for the time it took him to go to Ace to buy material he should have had with him. It takes me less than 10 minutes to get to Ace and even while he was gone I wondered if he went to Starbucks or something else because it took so long. The person I spoke with explained that they don't bring all materials for all jobs because there are too many different things they do. I argued that I was specific about the job and what they would need to do it. He didn't want me to be unhappy so he offered to take $30 off of the bill (less than one hour.) I wouldn't use them again for a couple of reasons. Although the work was OK it wasn't any better than my neighbor could have done. I didn't like fact that they weren't prepared. The person doing the work didn't seem energized to do the job and therefore proabably took longer than someone who was motivated. They seemed disorganized and blamed poor cell service on not properly communicating the job to the person who would do the work. There are enough other people out there who will provide better service at a better price to settle for this.

This was the second time I used this provider. The first time went good although I thought the job took longer than it should. Note - they get paid by the hour!! Well I gave them another chance. The handyman (same as the first job) showed up so I was a bit nervous. He was on time and checked out the job and said he had to go to the hardware store to get the parts (on the clock). He didn't have what he needed on his truck. This took almost an hour. It's a job I would have thought a plumber could do in about 30 minutes or less but a plumber would charge double American's rate plus want you to pay for an apprentice's time. The overall job took him over 2 1/4 hours @ $49 hr. Parts cost $21. I did get a $20 discount - I believe from the Angie's list ad. I think the handyman would say he's methodical when doing a job. He did do good work. I would call it slow.

My disposal clogged on potato peelings. I watched a video on YouTube and did everything suggested. My brother-in-law tried to unclog it, but was not successful. He suggested I call a handyman instead of a plumber. It would probably be cheaper. I contacted American Handyman and they were to come out Friday afternoon. Late in the afternoon, the serviceman called and said he would not be able to make it until Saturday morning. I appreciated his calling me so I didn't have to wait anymore. When he arrived, he identified the problem and explained to me what he had to do. He had the pipes taken apart, cleaned out, and put back together in no time. The disposal worked beautifully. The service call was very reasonable.

Worst experience I have ever had!! I felt like I had the screws put to me because I was a female making the transaction instead of my husband. If this guy is rated number one on Angies' list---then I don't want to be a member. All the good reports on him must have been his relatives or maybe just a simple task. I feel like I was cheated out of $500. dollars. Now I have to hire another man to finish projects that they didn't get around to. If he had sent a real plumber like I asked I feel like the job would have gone a lot smoother and faster and the plumber would have come prepared.
Description of Work: Completed only one of the projects--Installation of water softener The first day Chris arrived on time then took an hour locating pipes in wall Cut several holes in drywall to find them. Took lunch hr (on the clock) Tore out section of drywall to run tubes from main water inlet to corner of garage where softener would sit. Had to run to Home Depot to get parts he would need (gone an hr on the clock) Took another couple of hrs to find a drain he could connect softener to. (worked in attic for another hour ) Time to go home for the day (that was a 7 hr day) Said it would take about 3 hrs to complete project on Friday morn. Then he would begin next project I called owner Herbie and told him it was taking too long. At $50. an Hr It was going to take him 4 days to complete my 3 projects. He assured he was doing a good job and he would be able to complete all jobs. Arrived Friday morning on time --looked around and decided he needed to run to pick up parts Was gone an hr (on clock) Came back with tubingand other small parts Hooked copper pipe to inlet softener and tubes running from main water line. Began plastering drywall and mudding around all the holes he cut. Took lunch hr (on clock) Began to hook up softener and fill with water and salt. Set buttons and began to sweep up mess He was finished for the day Which took him 8Hrs. My stomach was in knots by the time he left. He said I would have to check with boss to setup another time for him to install the other items. I assured him they would not be coming back..

I had two back-to-back mixing valves in showers that were not giving any cold water, yet hot water was coming out irrespective of position. A previous call by another plumber had not fixed the issue, so I was about ready to tear into the wall, figuring the problem had to be in the piping. I called American Handyman and Herb right away speculated as to the issue (parts in valves), scheduled Chris for the earliest time I could be available, and Chris did a great job. Parts were more than half the bill -- they had no choice on that; the price I was charged for labor was quite reasonable. I am really, really pleased with the service I received and should/when I need plumbing help again, this will be my contractor!
