All 3 sliding glass doors on our house were difficult to move so I called for repairs. They called back soon and said they would be there as soon as another job was finished. The other job ran longer than expected but they did call back to explain the delay. The workman was polite and informative but opted to only replace the rollers on the doors without doing any repairs to the tracks. The doors now move more easily but still bump because of dented tracks. I believe the price was very high for the amount of work that was done and the doors still don't operate as smoothly as I would like. I chose American Handyman because it was the only firm listed on your list that mentioned sliding glass door repair that was anywhere near my home.

Hello Member, We are sorry that your tracks were not repairable. We did the best we could to repair the doors to make them as good as possible the only way to resolve this problem completely is to replace them.

Response to request was prompt and salesperson was punctual. But said replacing wood doors was impractical and only solution would be metal doors which would look like gym lockers. I was not happy with this solution because closet is next to front door. Estimate came in at over $1500 which I thought was very high. Contacted another provide who found a way to install the wood doors I originally wanted with a way to weatherproof them and a much lower estimate, so I have hired that provider.

He charged me $50 just to come out and another $50 an hour. They fiddled with it and then he said he could not install it, so I sent them away. My experience with American handyman was terrible. I paid out and did not get anything. I would not use them again.

The job was done over two days, and in the late afternoon, Nathan was ready to do the closing inspection. When I asked why the backside of the new fascia boards were not painted, he told me that it was not necessary. I insisted that the new wood would cup(bow) if left unpainted....after a bit of thought he had his helper take a tray of left over paint and brush it quickly on the backside of four boards. Then he praised and pumped his work during the rest of the inspection. By that time, the East siding was in deep shadow and though it was not impressive, it was implied that the residual old paint was too tightly adhered to be scraped off by hand. I paid and they loaded some boards (the rest of the work site was well cleaned) into the truck and left. The next day after a closer inspection in bright sunlight, I discovered that not all of the old loose paint had been scraped off thoroughly before painting and was still flaking off, in my hand. Actually a lot of old paint was still loose, even with a new coat of paint over it. I also found that they had dumped the construction debris (including paint chips, caulk tubes, lumps of half dried loose caulk and lumber) into a clearly marked city recycling blue can. A call to the city waste management found that all the recycles would have to be separated and rewashed, or I would have to pay to have it picked up as regular garbage. I called Herb at Handyman to complain and he sent Nathan over that morning to take care of things. When he arrived, Nathan became defensive and claimed that the city wanted construction litter recycled...which was blatantly false, having just spoken to them myself. He reluctantly agreed to "take care of it". When I showed him the east siding, he said that I had ruined the paint by "picking at it", and that he had not agreed to sand the siding. I said it was not an issue of "sanding", but physically scraping the loose paint, as was clearly stated in the contract. We talked at cross purposes with the tone getting louder and louder, until he was looming over me, shouting about sanding and four thousand dollar paint jobs. It was clear he was not going to acknowledge any responsibility and the tone was getting uncomfortably hostile, so I stopped it dead, told him to leave and we would let the credit card arbitration settle things. He, reluctantly, offered to clean the recycle, but after this discussion, I no longer trusted him to understand what was required to do so adequately, so dismissed his offer. A few days later I tried to talk to the owner, Herb, but he insisted he trusted Nathan and had no desire or need to inspect the job himself or receive photos of the problem areas. I filed a challenge with my credit card company. They requested a second opinion from a different contractor, which I provided. Privately, the contractor told me it was a very shoddy job all the way around. The evidence convinced the credit card company to refund my money, as requested for a portion of the job. I had checked Register of Contractors, Better Business Bureau and Angie's list, which was A+, before hiring them. The only thing that did, in the end, was give me a false sense of confidence in their professionalism, and trust in their statements. I won't make that mistake again, from now on I will parse every word in a contract like a lawyer, watch over their shoulders during the entire job, and view a flawless reputation with a skeptical eye.
Description of Work: Contracted for some wood fascia and trim repair/replacement and a simple one-coat paint job of trim, fascia and siding, to prepare for an appraisal inspection for refinancing.

Excellent service. Nathan was terrific. He came on time, was very personable and very skilled. He worked efficiently and quickly and was very helpful when I asked him about various questions I had about how I could repair myself some other issues in the house. Not only will I use American Handyman again, but I will be sure to ask for Nathan. I highly recommend this company.

He came at the end of the day when I asked to have somebody come that day. The best he could do was come at the end of day which was fine, but he got up there and he couldn't see for anything visible and he didn't quite know what to do, so he said that I needed a roofer because he just could not see. He would do whatever I wanted but he couldn't see where the leaks were. He wasn't scamming me and he didn't charge me for coming out and climbing on my roof. I called them last February when I had another roof issue at a different spot and they came out the next day. That was fine and pretty normal. They told that the scupper or whatever was coming out of the flat roof. It was leaking over the master bedroom bathroom window and they climbed up there and fixed it and it has not leaked since.
Description of Work: I have used American Handyman Service a couple of times. Last time when I had an issue with my flat roof he came out to look at it.

I cancelled. They are totally unreasonable in their charges. They are out to get rich from folds that don't understand their charges. I really wanted to use Chris, who works for them, because he was quick, knowledgable and confident. But, I'm not willing to pay $49 while they go shopping. They also charge $25 to show up to do the work. They are trying to get rich doing simple handiman work that most men can do. I am a single female and I need the help, and there are probably many other single females out there that they are scamming.
Description of Work: I didn't hire them. Chris seems to be excellent as a handiman, but Herb's quote was out of this world. Another handiman had quoted $413 for the same job. American Handiman expects you to pay $49 an hour while they go shopping for materials, which could be hours. They also will only give one small discount, (not the senior's if you get the $20 discount.) but charge a lot more to cover that measley $20.

I would say the good points are, they were available very quickly, they were very friendly but they do charge by the hour and we had 2 experience with them. One of the people that worked did a very good job and worked relatively quickly. The other person took his time and overcharged by half an hour. The second occasion, they painted the fascia on our house, that is where they took a little bit longer during the painting. The first occasion, they replaced some baseboards, the interior work was pretty quick and pretty proficient. Maybe I would use them again but it would depend on the work and it would also be me being diligent saying upfront I expect them to be here this time to this time so that way there's no overcharge.

I am new to the Tucson area and had a list of minor repairs I wanted made as I moved into my new residence. I selected American Handyman based on their large number of favorable reviews. I set an appointment with American Handyman and received service within 48 hours. Chris, the repairman, arrived promptly at the appointment time. We went over the list of work to be performed together. I asked Chris to give his opinion on whether a water pressure regulator should be installed - he checked the water pressure and thought the regulator was unnecessary. I appreciated the fact that he didn't perform unnecessary work. Chris proceeded to complete the other items on the list. He was very friendly and professional. I thought the bill might have been a little pricey (but maybe that was because I haven't used a service such as this for many years and I also didn't ask for a quote ahead of time). Overall, I was extremely pleased with Chris' work and will use American Handyman in the future.
Description of Work: Installed handles / knobs on new kitchen cabinets, repaired track on patio door, repaired and reinstalled legs on antique china cabinet, checked water pressure to house to determine if water pressure regulator was necessary.

For an example he put some space savers in my power box, put in light bulbs, put in smoke detectors, and also put in a shower grab bar. He was great and I was really pleased with him. Repairman showed up in time, correctly analyzed situation, went to buy parts and installed. It appeared that the job was done correctly, but a week or so later, found that when washing machine was using hot water, the two taps that had been "repaired" in fact leaked hot water. Called American Handyman and was not satisfied with response.

Stevan was the handyman. He arrived on time, even a little early (which is OK with me). I showed him what I needed done and he got right to work. He was great about keeping me posted on progress and asking me questions about my preferences. He needed to go to the store a couple times for some supplies that I didn't have. I changed my mind about how high I wanted the backsplash to go, after he finished doing what I asked, and he had no problem adding to the height. He was extremely friendly and courteous. The workmanship was perhaps not as good as what I hoped for. There was silicone squeezing out between the sink and the vanity that did not get cleaned up, and he wasn't particularly careful about cleaning the mortar out from between the tiles, but to be fair, after I finished the grouting, you really can't tell the difference. Also, when he was finished, he came out and reported "only one mess-up." This was a glass piece that is adhered to the side of the medicine cabinet. Apparently he didn't get it moved into position in time, so it is raised about 1/8" above the top of the medicine cabinet. I was disappointed, but in all honesty, it's barely noticeable. In terms of "mess-ups" this is a pretty small one. I really appreciate that he told me instead of letting me discover the slight mistake. The job took about 4 hours, including the trips to the hardware store. I would probably use their services again, although perhaps not for detail work. Overall I am happy with the work completed and the time it took to get it done. I was planning to DIY, but just couldn't get it together to deal with it. This was way faster, for sure!
Description of Work: Install bathroom vanity, sink, faucet, medicine cabinet, and glass tile backsplash. He did not grout since the mortar needed to set and he would have to come back. I opted to do that myself.

He worked diligently and fixed lighting and installed mailbox perfectly. He cleaned up after himself , was paid and he was on his way. Went very well. The person fixing it was very nice, professional, did an excellent job but we felt it took him a long time to do the job for what it was. If the price was a little lower or the job could be done faster, we would have hired through them again. Just couldn't afford the prices and had a lot that still needed to be done. At $400.00 a day, it just isn't affordable for us.

I scheduled an appointment for an estimate. The estimator did not show. The next day I received a call where the estimator apologized saying he had misplaced his notes and we rescheduled. We discussed the scope of the project and the type of door needed plus the lumber and other materials needed to make repairs to the framing and measurements were taken. After receiving the estimate I agreed to proceed and we scheduled the project. The Worker did show up at the scheduled time but did not have any idea of what work was to be completed and no materials for the job. I again explained what I needed and he again took measurements and said he was going to get the door and lumber. This was approximately 8am. He never returned. After waiting all day I finally received a call at 2:30pm stating that the worker had had an emergency that morning and they would need to reschedule. I took another day off work on the rescheduled day. A different worker showed up and again had no clue as to the job or any door or material. He again took measurements and left. He then returned and completed the job. Because the house is old the door opening is not to standard and the new door would have to be cut to fit. The door was cut too shot and there are gaps at the bottom where insects can enter and air loss. Another thing that was a bit unexpected was that I was not informed that the estimate did not include tax so I was a bit surprised at the additional 50.00 on the bill. Most contractors I've used included tax in the estimate or at least stated that tax was not included.
