By The Hour

The guys were really good and nice. They followed up on things. The price was good but quality of the work however left much to be desired. I'd recommend them only for certain projects. Update October 2, 2012: The floorboards creek every time you walk across them. The sidewalls are coming up. I had to re-drywall, have the baseboards redone, as well as the stucco, and tiles. After seeing the job come apart, I would not recommended them at all.

Overall, Jim appears to be a capable handyman. He is able to deal with basic electrical, plumbing, fixtures, etc. My first visit with Jim went very well. I called and he returned my call promptly, showed up and even called ahead to let me know he was running late. Task-oriented, he sometimes needs more firm direction on executing the task with good aesthetics (ie: putting up screen mesh over a metal security door should cover the whole door, not just 3/4 of it). The past couple appointments however, he didn't come prepared with the proper materials and has been over an hour late without letting me know a status. The last appointment however he failed to show altogether. I have called and left messages (including text), but have not received a response. Now he has left me in a real bind. After sawing away part of my upstairs railing to create a swing gate, it remains half-way done completed, being held by a vice grip and very UNSAFE for an upstairs structure. I am going to have to hire someone else to complete the work. Very disappointing.

.He was reasonable. He came out imitatly and was personable. He came in and did the job.

They are great. They were friendly and took their time when doing the work to make sure it was right.

Initial response was quick, however, responsiveness after that was spotty including a missed appointment. He showed up on the date contracted and powerwashed. Two days later, the next scheduled date, he arrived and painted but did no scraping at all--simply painted over the top of all the old, loose paint even though the worst areas had been pointed out to him prior to starting the project. Nail holes were not filled although the contract stated this would be done. He also "forgot" he was supposed to repair the carport ceiling. We were told to mark the areas that needed to be scraped and he would come back in a week's time and finish the scraping and painting and repair of the carport ceiling. On that day, he scraped and found he had to do some patching so had to wait a day for the patch to dry before he could paint. The next day he painted and repaired most of the carport ceiling (one split seam was untouched). Although the final paint job was okay, it could have been better. The entire process was disappointing as, contrary to the reviews I had read, he seemed to show no pride in his work and little concern for not finishing the job in the contracted time period. I was hoping to find a good, overall handyman as we will have upcoming projects but I will not use his service again and would not recommend him to anyone else.

James Flynn from By The Hour is very easy to work with. He was willing to help in any way he could have. Their price was very good. I would use him again.

From start to finish, the contracter was on time to do the job, he came prepared to do the job with proper equipment, gave a time estimate for the work required and held to it. We are completely satisfied.

$800 Jim is very expert in a multitude of skills. I will use him on plumbing and electrical in upcoming projects. He's extremely responsive and will go out of his way to accomodate his customers. I had a fireplace problem right before Thanksgiving and he came over and fixed it on very short notice. He charges by the hour which may raise a red flag with some potential customers but in his case it works in the customer's favor. He works quickly and fixes the problem. He's an honest and trustworthy contractor that completes his work expertly and at a cost under what you would expect.

Jim showed up on time, quickly made measurements of fascia, and examined the exterior plumbing fixture to be repaired. After a short trip to get additional materials, he and his helper went to work and finished the job in its entirety in less than three hours. The paint job was perfect and the fascia fitted perfectly with the surrounding wood. The landscaper arrived that afternnoon and was impressed with the plumbing work, saying that Jim's work was exactly what they needed. The shutoff faucet in the front had been poorly constructed with the pipe curving slightly out of alignment with the faucet itself. JIm carefully worked around that problem and ended up achieving the repairs with the pipe in alignment with the fixtures. All around, a perfect job, reasonable price, and job completed in far fewer hours than expected due to his and his helper's efficiency. They both thoroughly cleaned up afterwards, leaving my driveway free of nails and debris. Very happy with their work and will be calling on By the Hour again!

They were more expensive than what I could have gotten it for. They were about $400 to $500 higher than what I have gotten it for. They even followed up with a follow up call afterwards. They did the right thing, but it was just a little bit higher. I had asked him if that was the best price that he could give me and he said yes. They were fine. I would consider them in the future without a doubt.

Not well. Had a helper who did the work when he said he would be doing all the work. Charged $60 an hour for substandard work. Left a mess with each job and I had to sweep , clean and haul debris to dumpster myself. Cabinet doors hung crooked, painting needs to be redone. I now have more work after he left and had to hire someone else to repair the mess he left behind. I would not recommend this repairman to anyone and will never use him again.

Jim replied quickly to our request for service and showed up as promised. He charges by the hour (as his firm name indicates) and there are no unexpected upcharges etc etc - which we found refreshing. He and his assistant worked quickly and efficiently and did a great job. He's a keeper.

It went very well. I found Jim after Robertson's Services failed to honor their Angie's List Big Deal a couple weeks ago. After paying $299 for the Big Deal, that other company failed to keep the appointment they had scheduled, then denied having ever talked to me or made the appointment, and even denied any knowledge of the Big Deal I'd paid for! My work still needed to be done, so I found By the Hour and called Jim. We agreed on a date and time. He sent me a text message the evening before to confirm our appointment. He showed up as promised, looked at the jobs that I had, gave me an estimate, and left to pick up materials. When he and his assistant returned, they went to work and did a great job. They both made suggestions about some things I could do on my own, if I chose, saving the cost of labor on later work. They were both courteous, professional, and did not make me uncomfortable having them in my home. I still have several little fixer-upper jobs to be done around here, and will definitely ask them to return for those. What a relief it is to find honest people who do a decent job for a reasonable price!!!

Extremely professional. On time and accurate. Gets the job done without talking your ear off.

Jim and his worker, Dave were extremely professional. Arrived on time. Cleaned up their work. Never gave you the feeling that you had to be concerned about their work or integrity while at your home.

They painted the interior of the house. They painted two bedrooms, a big bathroom and an entry way. They did a bunch of outdoor light work and landscaping in and around the pool. They had real good reviews on Angie's List. I also had another guy and he failed to turn out so I decided to go with them. They did a nice job. They were on time and they did what they said they were going to do. Their rates were great and they do good work.

Jim first measured and ordered replacement beams. He took out one section at a time and rebuilt it. He built 6 triangular light boxes to replace the one that were in the structure. He painted the structure so it all looked the same. He did a final clean up and hauled off the old rotted wood.

This was a great experience for my wife and me. We were so impressed with Jim that we have asked him to return to hang a mirror and refinish some cabinets in the kitchen.

JIm Flynn, the owner of the company, strives to meet the needs of his customes. He is fully committed to the work he is doing. One of the things he I noted right away was his competence as well as his resouces for getting the job done. As a side note, I needed a picture picked up and delivered from a company less than a mile away. (Wouldn't fit in my car). Jim was more than happy to to help me. Great person and excellent handyman... I recommend him highy.....

Wonderful job! They are very responsive from very begining. I got FREE consultation about my dishwasher issue, rescheduled a few times due to the delayed delivery, but they would always like to reschedule and planned the 2nd day installation. I would hire them for my future projects.

They seemed to do good stuff. The guy was professional in everything and I was satisfied with the work.

Very responsive and punctual. Discerned what we needed done very quickly and told us what we needed to buy. Very efficient with his work and professional. We recommend him highly.

He did the job well and I would recommend him. The only thing was that I got a word of mouth that he charge $60 an hour and when I contacted him he did the work properly and it took more than two hours to finish the work but he charged me only $120. I liked him because he was very pleasant to work with and very knowledgeable. I would rate him high overall. I would use him again in the future.

James does what he says he will do. He always arrived at the time we had agreed. He bought all the materials and kept receipts and accounted for everything he spent. He kept us informed about the progress of the job. We recommend and quot; By the Hourand quot; to anyone who is interested in a handyman at a reasonable rate.

I was very happy with the work and would recoment this company to anyone.
