Doug Van Patten

Doug Van Patten remodeled our 40 year old kitchen this year and both of our bathrooms last year. The results of all three rooms were beyond our expectations. Doug is so easy to work with and so considerate to give us functional use of all facilities and appliances throughout the reconstruction process. Doug and Erin are so helpful in the planning and design process helping us to incorporate our desires with their craftsmanship and artistic expertise resulting in practical and beautiful renovations to our home. Doug really was the best part of our days with him! He is knowledgable, professional, courteous, affable, and a hard-worker. We love Doug and absolutely love his remodel. As a professional contractor, he also removed walls, built new walls, and basically had his hands in every aspect of our whole remodel.

Doug built a bathroom for us in the crawl space off our basement. We wanted a basic utilitarian bathroom . . . and for a very reasonable cost that equalled the lowest of two other estimates, Doug built us the prettiest bathroom in our home! His work is exceptional. He is an artisan craftsman and does virtually everything himself from start to finish. Doug is a pleasure to work with, a truly trusted professional!

Worked with Doug and Erin in two phases to reface fireplace, paint and interior design services for master bedroom, living room and hallway. We had used Doug and Erin earlier in the year to completely remodel our kitchen. They are both easy to work with and professional in all the work they do. Superbly. Mr. Van Patten advised and selected the design, materials and colors (to say nothing of the soundness of the structure) which was adroitly approved by our HOA and which fit perfectly into our existing house scheme and landscape.

It went very smoothly. We were out of state while the work was done. Doug kept us up to date with pictures and regular reports. He was able to get the job done in a timely manner and in the budget we had discussed. We feel confident that we can leave our home in his capable hands whenever we need work done.

Doug and Erin were fantastic! When I first contacted Doug, he set an appointment to meet and discuss my plans. He arrived promptly and was very pleasant to talk to. He listened to what I had in mind and offered ideas that were superior to what I had planned. I did not have the same experiece with the other two contractors that I interviewed. Doug provided a detailed estimate with approximate costs for each part of the remodel and revised it to reflect some of the materials that I had already picked out. He was always available to discuss my ideas prior to the remodel and lend his expertise. He kept me up to date with approximate start date. During the remodel, he always made sure to keep the working areas clean when he left. He was open to changes that I requested last minute. He was very gracious about the constant questions I had about the work in progress. The quality of workmanship was excellent and I was pleased that Doug kept the remodel to the budgeted amount. I absolutely love my new bathroom! Thank you Doug and Erin!

Doug and Erin were extremely easy to work with. We got two bids for the master bathroom. We did not bid the kitchen. We chose Doug and Erin because they do the actual work and their bid was affordable. The only increases to the bid were a result of our choices to do so. They are both creative and had great suggestions on the design. It amazed me that Doug was able to mix the paint colors to get the color I wanted. Doug worked with our schedule and kept the work areas as clean as possible. Doug and Erin were meticulous with the tile install. They care about what the customer wants and are very trustworthy. We are extremely satisfied with the quality of the work. We would hire them again in a heart beat.

We are very pleased. We selected Doug after looking at his quote and comparing to others. We paid half up front and half at completion which worked out fine. we had a few minor schedule slips due to suppliers but nothing out of the normal. He made it work. One surprise for us was how clean he kept the workplace and our house. We have done several removals with tile and drywall dust everywhere. That was not the case here - he kept after it and always had that big vac at the point of dust making! He kept us informed on progress. We had a Dropcam in the kitchen so we could watch and enjoy progress from afar and he had no problem with that at all - even git a wave now and then. He was very patient with us and always did what he said he would do. All in all - we were very pleased with the design, the price, the work, the quality and the outcome. We would recommend him.

I called 3 contractors to get an estimate on the remodeling we wanted. Doug was the only contractor that answered his phone at the time I called. I left messages with the other 2 contractors and they never even called me back. Doug and his wife Erin came to the house to get the information for an estimate. At the time I thought I knew what I wanted, but they came up with some ideas that I would have never thought of (which I used). He gave me the estimate in the time frame promised and also started the job in the time frame we agreed to. The master bathroom had a small shower and garden tub (which I never used). We needed a bigger shower and Doug was able to remove the tub and replace it with a beautiful tiled shower. I did not know what kind of tile I wanted in the shower so I just told Doug to go with and do what you want. It turned out beautiful and is the envy of the neighborhood. In the guest bathroom Erin came up with the idea to put a glass tile frame around the fiberglass tub and shower that we were not replacing. That little feature made a world of difference in the look of the bathroom and really made it look custom. The lights, cabinets, counters, mirrors, hardware, toilets and flooring were changed in both bathrooms. The kitchen was the biggest change. All the flooring was changed from laminate to 18 inch tile flooring. I was going to replace all the cabinets to a darker wood and to have a couple of cabinets larger to give more of a customized look to the kitchen. Doug suggested that I have the old cabinets refaced and just replace 2 cabinets for the dimension I wanted. The cabinets came out beautiful and is just the look I wanted. All the fixtures, granite counter tops, and back splash are just stunning and went way beyond my expectations. There were a few changes that I made as the job progressed that Doug took in stride. During the entire remodel, Doug always made sure that I was able to live in the house with a working bathroom. Having both bathrooms remodeled at the same time made it a little challenging. Doug also kept everything as clean as possible during the entire 2 months it took for this project. My husband was not home at the time of the remodel and all he could say when he got home was "this belongs in a magazine". We are both very happy with the out come of our home. We highly recommend Doug for any construction project you may have.

Doug and his wife Erin are the talented and skilled folks who remodeled our bathroom. My wife and I wanted to have a nice custom bathroom that would feel a spacious as our tiny space would allow. The old bathroom was ill-designed and was starting to get mold due to poor construction. Doug came in, took a look at our tiny and cramped bathroom and did not cringe when we told him we wanted a double vanity in addition to making it look awesome! (How's that for precise direction? :-) ). Doug worked with us very patiently as we switched back and forth on what we wanted ("We don't know what we want, but we'll know it when we see it!"). Doug adapted his design very well to the style of the vanity, mirror and lights we purchased. Erin came in and did a killer job of balancing the tile colors, design, and layout with the size of the room and color of the furniture and walls. My wife and I are not designers, so Erin (thankfully!) let us know when we wanted to put too much into the little room we had. The bathroom turned out to be absolutely everything we hoped for! It is beautiful, show home quality work! The master bathroom is now the best part of our home by far! My wife and I are very happy with everything. I wish I could upload a picture to show how beautiful our bathroom looks! Best of all, the work came on budget! I should say I am a stickler for details (tiny things just jump out at me), and the level of worksmanship in this project is extremely high. Little, hard-to-notice things are done well and are well thought-out. Things that could have been done sloppily because they will be out of sight anyway are done well as if they were front and center of every visitor. I love the level of quality put into this project. Every detail is planned for and taken care of. Doug is a real pro at this. Even though the bathroom is off the master bedroom, Doug kept the space and our bedroom clean. We expected dust and a mess, but that never happened. Doug had to work every day while our kids (2 and 3 years old) were napping, and he was 100% successful in not waking them up, even though we did not ask him to keep quiet, it does not make sense to ask for quiet in the middle of a remodel job! My point is that Doug and Erin are considerate above and beyond the call of duty. It was a pleasure having them work on our home. If it sounds like there are not enough good things I can say about our experience in this remodel, you're right. Everything turned out better than expected. Doug and Erin somehow figured out what we wanted even though we were not good at expressing it in precise words. In the future as we continue to remodel and update our home, Doug and Erin will certainly be the folks we call. Doug and Erin are highly recommended!

First he had to find the locations of the drain pipe buried in the tile floor and the hot/cold sources in the wall from the home's original construction; jack-hammering and drywall-cutting were needed. Then he figured out how the tub and filler should be placed in the large, empty corner relative to the plumbing. (Retrofits can be a real challenge!) It had to be "just so" for attractiveness from my point of view and Doug totally "got" that. Then he coordinated plumbing-routing and -installation with his plumber, working on floor- and wall-reconstruction in between. He's worked meticulously, neatly, and with consideration of my pickiness. He has an eye for detail, and I trusted him completely to do it exactly right, even when I wasn't there. This is the second job he's done for me and I would hire him again in a nanosecond.

We got several bids on building our new house. We liked Doug because he worked on a cost plus basis and had stacks of bids to back up his overall bid. That really gave us the opportunity to have the information in front of us to pick and choose where we wanted to spend extra money or cut back. Doug started out being very helpful getting the plans through the HOA and county for permits. He even prepared the color board for the HOA, saving us the $1,000 the architect was going to charge. Of course there have been problems building, but none created by Doug. As problems occurred, he kept open communication and did a great job explaining what the problem was, the cost and various options. Doug has a very artistic eye and good common sense. If I ever do another build, he will be the first call I make.

Doug (and his wife) did a beautiful job tiling. Per usual, the entire project was a little slow at times, waiting for other materials and suppliers to arrive. But having just done something similar in another house, overall this process was far more efficient and much less stressful. Doug is very professional but also very personable. I appreciated his willingness to incorporate all my needs and ideas. I found his pricing to be very good. I've gotten rave reviews from everyone who's seen it and I'm extremely happy with the results. I definitely recommend Doug to others.

You should be aware that this is a small operation, and Doug was somewhat over-committed in his personal and professional life during this period. It took more than a week to get a bid, and even when presenting the bid he was hedging a bit as to price and could not commit to schedule at that moment. I had 35 years experience in the construction industry before my recent retirement, and I knew what I was in for. This project would be slow, and my husband did not want to be inconvenienced. Still, Doug shared my vision of the end-product, not to mention he quoted a killer price. I had to press him to clarify what he was presenting was his best guess of what it would end up costing, but the work would be done on a time and materials basis. He was not giving me a solid "this is it" price as the other 3 contractors submitting designs and quotes were doing. He wanted to use the quote as the form of contract, and would not be presenting a formal contract (although he assured me he used contracts for his larger projects). I checked his contractors licenses and bond, finding no complaints. We moved forward; but if you ignore every other word in this review, please listen to these 10: NEVER DO WORK WITH A CONTRACTOR WITHOUT A FORMAL CONTRACT. You will have NO protections should there be an accident during the course of construction or should the contractor flake on you or provide substandard work. Ask for proof of insurance, too. If his worker is hurt or damage is caused, you might get stuck with the bill. Do as I say, not as I do. As I had guessed, the project did go slower than it would have had I used one of the other 3 contractors, and they would have been doing more work due to their insistence on scrapping everything and starting anew. Doug shared my vision to save as much existing as possible and improve upon it. Important: the subcontractors that Doug brought into my home were trustworthy, hard working individuals. I felt comfortable leaving them alone and even leaving the house on errands. There were very few outside workers (only 4 in this case) as Doug does most of the work himself. I appreciated the lower number of strangers given access to my home. The end result is PERFECTION. It is everything I had hoped for and more. Doug was flexible and our mutual vision evolved during the course of the work, so I'm glad it went slowly. If you can be patient (which is so very, very hard in this stressed-out, instant gratification world we live in), you can have perfection too.

We recently had a meeting with Doug Van Patten on our empty lot in Prescott Valley AZ. Before the meeting we had a long telephone conversation and several emails. I was impressed with his ideas, his open book policy, and especially his artistic side. Before our meeting he sent us to see a Santa Fe house in the desert outside Tucson. The current owners were most gracious and gave us a tour inside. There were so many beautiful unique architectural details it was too much to remember. We loved the house which had its own unique personality! On our actual meeting he was full of ideas and ways to solve the many problems involved with building on a hilltop lot with no utilities. We have not decided whether we can build yet; but I would recommend Doug highly for any prospective new clients that want to build a unique new home. Sincerely, SG

Had another subcontractor add drywall and texture. Very good work by both. Prompt, clean ( as clean as can be when installing drywall and texture). Recommended....

We are very pleased with the quality, skill and professionalism of Doug. He truly cares about his work and is a dedicated craftsman. He is reliable, very fair in his estimates, very detail-oriented, and left the place spotless. Doug kept in continual contact with us, listened to our ideas, and offered great suggestions in the planning stages. We highly recommend Doug for any home improvement projects and already have plans to use him for future work.

Several emails and one phone call occurred and that is all that has taken place. I said to this man I understand that you are busy, but if you do not want to undertake my project which I sent pictures, dimensions and the scope of the project, then please tell me soon if you will come to my home and physically see what needs to be accomplished. With one comment from Mr. Van Patton, have you found anyone else yet? That automatically said to me you don't want to undertake this job. If this is the case, or the job is too much for you then say so.. Don't string people along and hope they disappear. That is unprofessional at best!

, Any Concerns we might of had about the Re-Model, were put to Rest the First Day, when Doug Started the Demo Portion of the Job. Doug is a Meticulous (Almost Surgical) Craftsman, who pays Great Attention to Detail, and takes his time, to Get the Job Right. As with any Re-Model, we had Changes we wanted to make as the Job Progressed, and Doug took these in Stride, and the Additional Charges were Very Reasonable, and the end result was Amazing. We would HIGHLY Recommend Doug for ANY Project. His Tile work is Superb, and an added Bonus was at the End of the Day, Doug made sure everything was Cleaned up, and any construction debris, was kept to a minimum. We are Both Happy Campers.
