I interviewed a number of roofers to replace the roof on my 1940's historical home, and I decided to give the job to Rick Thomas Roofing. (due to his A rating with the Better Business Bureau, no complaints with the Registrar of Contractors and a recommendation from a friend that had used him for their home a number of years ago). The work began in april of 2009 and went on for about three weeks. When the job was completed, my home looked like the work was a performed by a bunch of children. Three different colors of mud was used through out my roof, tar and mud was sloppy and all over the roof tile and my AC units, the elbows on both of my AC units were covered with tar, creating an unbearable exhaust smell inside my home all summer long. I replaced one of the elbows on one of my AC units in hopes that the smell would go away (total of $900) but it didn't make a difference. With the first rain of the season, the flat part of my roof became a lake and water starting coming through my light fixtures in my hall bathroom and second bedroom. Rick Thomas came out and decided this part of the roof needed to be pitched so that water would be directed to the gutters so that water would be moved off of the roof. The company came back and redid this part of the roof with spray-on foam roofing. The next rain...... water was still coming through light fixtures in the hall bath and second bedroom. At this time a superintendent came out with a caulking gun and said he fixed the problem but Rick Thomas tried to blame the AC guy who installed a new elbow on my AC unit as the reason for the latest leak. AGAIN the next time it rained, I had massive water pouring through my hall bath light fixture, and family room light fixture and the ceiling in my family room became swollen and bowed. I called Rick Thomas yet again, it took him three days to come out and look at the problem. This time apparently the spray foam had peeled back from the edge of the roof, creating a hole that water was pouring down the inside of my walls, and traveling through the rafters in my home. The problem was again repaired and Rick Thomas left my home telling me to send him the bill for the drywall repairs (this was two weeks before Christmas). A water mediation company (SOS Restoration) came out and set up industrial fans to dry the walls and ceilings which took two weeks. The ceiling in the family room was completely ripped out and the house was a total mess, needless to say there was no Christmas at my house this year. The drying, drywall repair and repainting was completed by Christmas eve. Total bill for repairs $3,900. I sent the bill to Rick Thomas to pay for the damage and followed up with a number of phone calls and he has never returned my calls, and has not paid the bill for my repairs. Latest rain (2/28/09).........I have three buckets catching water in my garage and one in my master closet and water stains under my back patio. I have lived in my house for 22 years and I am out about $27,000 and I was better off with my old roof. I highly recommend NOT using Rick Thomas Roofing!!!!

This was one of 3 companies I called for an on-site estimate, & their salesman (no longer with the company) did the most thorough inspection & offered the most competitive bid. (One of the others didn't even get up on the roof.) I knew simply that my roof leaked & that the fascia was damaged; he explained how roofs are designed to work & why mine wasn't doing the job-- so the recommended improvements made sense & I was in a better position to maintain the new roof. I received a 5-year warranty which seemed short, but my favorite contractor recommended this company, & they checked out well with the BBB & ROC. The work was scheduled to suit me, & finished on-time in about a week. I was disappointed to find a LOT of roofers nails and a small amount of debris strewn about the gravel and landscaping around my home, which I think could have been prevented with tarps, etc. Still, I no longer have any leaks (after several big storms), the roof looks great, & even the new bird stops work!
Description of Work: Replaced entire underlay with 72 lb. felt (and wood as necessary) beneath tile roof of 2,500 sf home; replaced 30'x10' flat patio roof; added metal drip lines; replaced ineffective clay bird stops with better ones; replaced rotted fascia where necessary; reflashed improperly done skylight. (Work completed in April 2005.) The work remains under warranty for another 4 years.
