I've never dealt with a company so quality conscious and responsive. They were the first to respond to the request for estimate. They came out the next day and spent considerably more time than their competitors. Their estimate was the highest we received, but their professionalism led us to believe it would be worthwhile. They also offered the best guaranty. As soon as we signed with them, we started getting emails and calls EVERY day from service managers and project managers. Before starting and during the 1.5-week job, they communicated EVERY day on what was going to be happening that day, who was working, what we could expect, what would happen the next day, etc... The crews kept the yard clean and neat during the job. When they finished, I walked up the ladder to look at the finished job and almost cried... it was so beautiful. It was obvious how much care they took in getting everything perfect. Even after being "done", 2 guys showed up the next day just to do a full final examination. They found 2 minor things that they sent a crew back to fix the next day. My only complaint with them was that, although they replaced some lumber facings where needed (due to deterioration), they didn't mention to me that they would NOT paint them to match. It wasn't a huge deal, but it was unexpected. Overall, if you can afford to pay a little more, you will not be disappointed by these guys.

The project went well with some delays due to employee illness and prior commitments. The crews that worked on the project knew what they should do and worked diligently to complete their portion of the job. I was impressed with the professionalism of the managers and crew and they all appeared to have specialized expertise in this line of work which is roofing and decking. When technical issues arose on which I wanted a second opinion we got the operations manager involved and he was very knowledgeable in all areas of roofing and decking and his opinion was very valuable to my comfort level. He was also a really nice guy and easy to talk to. I would use this firm again in fact I have some roofing issues they pointed out that I will use them for. The price was not the lowest but my lower bidders wanted to reinstall the old system which would cause more issues down the line and possible sooner rather than later. After seeing the work involved I believe it was a fair price for this project.
Description of Work: The Company resurfaced the decking on my 2nd floor deck replacing some plywood in the process. Prior to their work the deck was leaking thru to the covered patio underneath. We utilized a product called Ply Deck which they were familiar with and recommended.

Thank you for your feedback. The Pli Deck walk deck system is the premier choice for long term remediation of walk deck surfaces. Unless the product being installed is designed for foot traffic it is only a perceived cost savings over installing the right product. Thanks again for sharing your insight with other Angie's list members. We look forward to working with you on your roof issues as well. Enjoy the holidays! I had a roof check, for the second time. Both times I was told that the roof was in good shape for another 3-5 years. My purpose in writing is solely that I believe them to be very honest in the way they do business. They are in the referral network of a local referral network that is run by a fairly well-known former contractor. That network has a very good reputation and that is how I found Lyons about seven years ago. When the time comes for me to get a roof done they will be one of the contractors that I obtain a bid from and they will start in first place in my evaluation based on the fact that I believe them based on prior interactions.

We had a leak in the roof that was causing damage to a common wall between the bedroom and bathroom. We had determined the source of the problem and contacted Lyons Roofing for a repair estimate. No one answered when we called, so we left a message explaining the issue and asking for an estimate. Our call was never returned. It is possible that the job was too small, so the company was not interested, but a courtesy call would have been appreciated.

Called this company over a week ago! We had a leak dripping in on our kitchen table from some recent storms. We did receive a phone call from a lady wanting to schedule us for an "estimate appointment" to replace the whole roof! I told her I just wanted an "estimate appointment" for a repair because we can't afford the whole roof at this time. She said she does not have schedules for the estimators and would relay the message to someone in the field who keeps his own schedule. I have yet to receive any calls!!! I would not use this company even if they did finally call us because of their lack of response, I can just imagine how quick they would do any repairs!

No excuses for our inability to connect with you. Foam roof installations, albeit a fabulous roofing system, is a very temperamental application and delays are often part of the process, regardless of job size. I understand we were repairing a small portion of your existing foam roofing system. I believe the reason you did not receive a printed warranty is that we warranty roofs that we install, not repairs to other roofs. I am getting the impression that you were under a different impression. May I ask that you contact me directly so we can reach a remedy for this situation. I contacted Lyons on a day that we had lots of rain that exposed leaks in our roof. While I totally understood that there were a lot of requests that day for roofers, I was assured on the phone by the woman who was relaying messages to the field that I would be contacted since I considered it an emergency (we had water coming in through a light fixture). I was contacted 5 days later. By that point, I not only had someone else do the repair (I wasn't going to rely on just calling one roofer that day) but they got the business to replace the whole roof. I was even thinking that if they had called me back in 2 days, I would have had them quote the job due to the high reviews on Angie's List but it was too late by the time they called.

I called them Saturday morning after the big rainstorm and we had leaks. I am giving them a D instead of straight F's, because they actually DID have someone answering the phones for emergencies. She said they had a ton of calls and would call me back in the order calls were received. OK. I waited like a prisoner until 3pm, then left. It is now Tuesday...haven't heard from them yet. I am really shocked at the high ratings they have; you'd think that everyone including the owner and family would be calling people back to see if services still needed, but I guess they're so busy, they don't need more business.

Two men came to discover the source of my leak problem. they were on time and quite professional. after tentatively deciding where the origin of the leak may be, they tested their theory with my water hose and the leak began. They quoted me a price that was actually lower than some competitive offers, but their price was lower because they did a better job of identifying the actual source of the leak. therefore not so much work was required to resolve my problem. I was very impressed with the problem solving process and the follow up to resolve my leak.

The initial estimate from the salesman seemed extremely low at about $3,700 given what we thought had to be done. When the actual roofers came, they confimed that the deck had to be pretty much totally torn down to the rafters and replaced before the Pli-Deck system could be installed. It went from a 2-3 day job to a 7 day job. The additional cost was another $2,000. Since I thought the original estimate was low, I was not surprised by the new cost. The tear-down effort was extremely difficult, and it took the workers two full days to complete. In the process, our foreman contact changed just after the tear down started. Since the deck is over the outdoor patio and the kitchen below, we were extremely lucky that we had no rain during the three days that the deck was open. I was not impressed with the tear-down effort at all. Once torn down, our new foreman (Edward) actually became the carpenter who replaced the sub-floor. He worked incredibly hard and I have nothing but good things to say about the job he did. Once that was done, the two roofers (Lonny and Junior with Edward helping at times) could actually put down all new flashing and a new plywood base. The quality of that work was outstanding. Then Lonny and Junior proceeded to install the Pli-Deck system which consists of a concrete type base which is then covered with metal mesh and then topped with a layer of resin and a layer of fiberglass and then finally with another thin layer of the concrete like base. Everything is then painted to your desired color. Lonny and Junior do outstanding work and it was a pleasure having them involved in the project. Edward, new that week to the company, was also a key resource in getting the project completed.

"How did it go?" asks Angie's List. Well... where do I begin? First, it's worth mentioning that we moved into a "fixer upper" in Alhambra, one needing a new roof for the main part of the house, and also a new, smaller roof for the porch and back addition to the house. For our main roof, we used Monarch Roofing (see my review here on Angie's List for them and their work). This review is for a much smaller job, for just a portion of the house. I consider myself a pretty patient person, and I used to work also as a crew leader and project manager for two different landscaping companies, so I know how work and construction can involve unforeseen circumstances, change orders, little mistakes, etc. However, I was appalled at the way Lyons conducted some of their work. They behaved like a newbie company just getting started, or maybe one of my uncles doing work for us as a favor, not as a professional roofing company should. 1. Scheduling errors with the *initial contact*. Lyons Roofing, I have to say, was about one of two of ten roofing companies that we called (from Angie's List) that called us back within one week to schedule an initial consult, and the only one who bothered to show when we agreed to meet with them. However, the scheduler/secretary (a very young girl) called us back later to schedule the initial consult *after* we'd already made arrangements with Lyon already. Then she called us later in the week to set it up - again. Oops - understandable mistakes, but did not bode well for other communications with this company. 2. Materials questions with the initial consult that weren't professionally addressed. The president of the company came himself to consult with us regarding our patio roof. He talked us out of our initial idea- a metal roof on our porch - for the very reasonable explanation that our house in our area probably would have an upgrade that no other houses probably would have either, now nor in the near future. A foam roof, he explained, probably would be a more economical choice and have a good R-value for the money. Then he explained that the way to finish these roofs would be with a coating of elastomeric roof coating; since we're informed homeowners and have great interest in products that may save us money with cooling, and also have a good performance reputation, we asked what the elastomeric roof coating was and who supplied it. He told us that they "always" used Pro-Tech EC-100, and assured that we'd get that product too, on our roof. We also asked for specs on the product and asked about the solar reflective index (SRI) of it; they e-mailed us a PDF of the product specs with the wrong area highlighted (we'd hoped that Lyon would know what we meant by "solar reflective index", but apparently this technical term was beyond them). We ended up doing our own research without Lyon's help. Nonetheless, we felt confident that we'd get "our" specific product since we were assured by the president of the company that it would be used. 3. Written contract unclear. The work was specified as discussed in the consult in our contract for a decent price.... *except* my husband noted that the specific elastomeric product that he wanted (that Lyon Roofing had promised) wasn't specified. It was simply written as "elastomeric coating" without the brand name and specific type. We called, therefore, to be certain that our desired product, Pro-Tech EC-100, would be the product used, and we were told basically that all coatings were more or less the same. (?!) Because of our own research, we know that isn't true - that's why we wanted this specifically! In the end, through our insistence, we were assured by our project manager that we'd get that specific Pro-Tech product. So, we signed the contract, and provided a deposit. The work was then scheduled in a timely way. 4. Work mistakes. The day the workers appeared, I went to the truck itself to be sure that they brought the exact materials that were specified in our written contract (after all we'd been through, we did not want a bait and switch). All seemed well, and the labels on the drums matched what we wanted. However, the project manager (probably in his eagerness to please) informed me that Lyon had "special ordered" the roof coating just for us - apparently, this wasn't something they used on a regular basis. Then why, I thought, did they promise it to begin with? And what if I wasn't here to check to be sure that this product was used - what would we have gotten otherwise?--- That's a mystery that only Lyon knows the answer to. The work commenced for three days- cleanup every day was complete. One of the days was a no-call, no-show. Despite my husband and I both telling the work foreman *not to cut our trees*, however, that touched the roof - plastic sheeting would have prevented any problems without necessitating trimming of trees - to our dismay, the work foreman chopped one of our citrus trees in half (I am not kidding - half the canopy was missing) and badly hacked away the branches of another. Worst of all, though, was their sloppy prep work for the foam roof - they ended up over-spraying foam from the patio installation onto our new roof on the main part of the house. When we pointed this out to the project manager, though, he offered to replace the shingles with new, then told me "they might not exactly match", and when I pointed out that this was indeed a new installation, he replied something like "really?" So this is also a roofing company that can't tell a new installation. In the end, we had the original company come back, re-install the damaged courses, and Lyon agreed to remove that expense from our bill. However, good preparation before the work commenced could have prevented this error and saved them aggravation and loss of profit, and saved us the hassle of having to coordinate with the other roofing company (this delayed completion of this little project by two weeks!). No explanation from the work foreman or project manager either as to how this error occurred. 5. Paperwork confusion. The billing, astonishingly, was correct and showed a small change order for new wood and also the negotiated price in our final bill. Our warranty paperwork, however, at the final walkthrough showed that our warranty would expire 10 years from now.. in 2012. My husband had to show the project manager this part of the paperwork and explain that this was 2013, and when the corrected PDF was emailed to us the next week, I looked at it and had to explain to the secretary that 2013+20=2023. She submitted another correction to the correction which was still wrong, and while finally the real correction came in the regular mail, I was so sick of this company by that time I wanted nothing more to do with them and didn't care anymore about their warranty or anything else. --------------------------------------------------------- All in all, a laughably incompetent company, if I was inclined to laugh about it, with errors and mistakes every step of the way, some serious, some just stupid, all annoying and none of them expected from a company apparently in business for 20 years. I hope I never have to deal with them again. ---------- As of 9/23/13, we haven't heard back from this company despite the note above about "training opportunities". Don't want to deal with them again.
Description of Work: This contractor ripped off our old patio roof (tin and shingle), removed and reinstalled new wood roofing joists, and installed a spray polyurethane foam roof over our patio cover, finishing with a white reflective roof coating.

Dear homeowner, I am sorry that this experience did not unfold as anticipated. I also am confused as to the communication regarding the use of EC-100. It is the product we use exclusively on all residential applications. Pro tech is a highly regarded company, locally based, that we have been trade partners with for several years. Their product line is our go to of choice. If you need any additional documentation, perhaps from Protech directly, to put you at ease regarding both manufacturer and workmanship warranties, I would be happy to facilitate that exchange. I have spoken with the owners of the company regarding your case and they are shocked that it took this turn, in Paul's words, you are our ideal customer and this was a simple job that should have unfolded with ease. The LaNue's will be contacting you directly to better understand these issues and glean out the training opportunities to assure better customer satisfaction going forward. Again, my since apologies. Hello Homeowner, Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback regarding your experience with Lyons Roofing. As far as price is concerned, we know we are not the least expensive, but we also know we are fairly priced as compared to other same in class companies providing the exact same scope of work. So your deicison is made, and we hope that your roofing project runs perfect. I have a favor to ask. In order to assure fair pricing for other Angie's list customers, would you mind sharing the chosen companies bid to me. I am more intersted in the scope of work than the pricing, so you can block that information if that makes you more comfortable. Thanks again for your insight. Best regards, Ann Pepper Director of Business Development apepper@lyonsroofing.com

This company is very professional and LouAnn was great. Unfortunately, we decided to go with another provider due to cost of quote.

Hello Homeowner, Who doesn't love Lou Ann (we call her Lamb)? I really appreciate your feedback and hope your job turns out perfect. As I just mentioned to another Angie's list member, we are aware that we are not the low price leader, but we do believe we are fairly priced as compared to other companies of our size, so long as the work being priced is apples to apples. In the interest of assuring that we are fairly priced for other Angie's list members, would you mind sharing with me the accepted bid so we can compare the scope of work. Price is a reflection of the work we are quoting, so I am more interested in the quoted work than the quoted price. Again, I hope your project turns out well. Best always, Ann Pepper Director of Business Development apepper@lyonsroofing.com

Small crew (2-men with occasional help from a third) led to a eight day total effort. However, no corners were cut and the quality and care demonstrated was outstanding. I am thoroughly pleased with Lyons. A job very well done!!!

So far so great. Was able to schedule online and had a response within 24 hours (this is a first for me, as normally I never even got a call back from other roofers). Mike came out, estimated both houses for full replacements as he and others had recommended not band aiding the roofs. They had told me we were about 6 weeks out. Got us on the schedule 3 weeks early and started both houses today. Other than it being noisy, as my wife decided to work from home today and well they are roofers and told us it would be noisy, they cranked on both houses. The amount of work completed in one day was quite impressive, I know as my little brother was a roofer down in Tucson. As it stands the only 'complaint' my wife has is they started at 6:45 this morning and worked all day. I'm not going to complain about that for sure.
Description of Work: Fully replacing the 'stuff' for 2 tile roofed houses.

We have a big roofing job, but would never entrust our home to a company that appears careless. They must be very busy and clearly too busy to do our job.
Description of Work: Lyons did not return my call to schedule an estimate. Spoke with a lady who said the scheduler for our area would call back. We have received no call to date.

My apologies that we were unable to respond to you request. We consider every phone call, every customer, the life blood of this organization. I remain a bit confused as we have only 1 scheduler and no record that you have called our organization. Our standard of service is that a record is created for each call received. During the most recent rains- our answering service handled the overflow calls... I have to wonder if we never received your message? Sounds like excuses and I never make excuses for our errors, bottom line you were dissatisfied and for that I apologize. Here forward is what I can control. If you still need our assistance please contact me directly and I will personally assure your complete satisfaction. Ann Pepper Director of Business Development apepper@lyonsroofing.com

Sales: Lou Ann was awesome! We actually got two lower quotes, but the fact that she was so detailed with what Lyons would be doing, took the time to lift a large number of tiles on the problem areas that were causing us concern and showed us pictures, offered us several options along with payment options, I thought she did a top notch job and we felt the higher quote would be worth the extra money. The only issue we had with Lou Ann came long after the job started. Lou Ann explained that of the 5%-10% of the tiles that would need to be replaced due to breakage, the roofers would intersperse the tiles one here and one there all over the roof so that the color difference (our original tile had 20 years of fading in the sun) would not be so noticeable. This was not accurate information since the original maker of our tile isn't producing these tiles any longer (she knew this), the new tiles would not "lock" with the old, therefore, we were forced to have an entire section 5%-10% of our roof look like a completely different color. Not overly pleased to learn this well into the job, but we were stuck. When I complained to the supervisor (Tom), he said they are trying to train Lou Ann to know better than to tell customers this type of inaccurate info. Scheduling: This was the beginning of the nightmare. We signed the contract on 04/6/2013 and we gave $5000 down and were promised a start date of some time in May, most likely the latter part of the month. We were told someone would be calling from the office to give us the start date. We waited and waited for that call and it finally came with a start date of 06/04/2013. I was not pleased, but willing to accept the date given. We received a call the Friday before, stating they will not be starting the work until 06/11/2013. I specifically said to the girl that called "You have had $5000 of our money for two months now and we were promised a start date in the month of May and now you are calling to reschedule for 06/11/2013, I'm fine with this reschedule as long as there will be no more rescheduling, I expect the workers to start on my roof Monday, 06/11/2013." She assured me that yes, the job would most definitely be starting on 06/11/2013. Monday, 06/11/2013 rolls around and mid-morning the materials show up. The men place the materials on the roof and leave. No one explains what's going on and no one remained with the materials. On this same day, Tom the Supervisor introduced himself and said that the dumpster / trailer would be dropped off on Tuesday and if workers didn't show up by 11:00 a.m, they wouldn't be coming at all until Wednesday, 06/13/2013 because they are finishing up their last job. I expressed my complete aggravation to him and let him know how I was promised a start date in the month of May. He acted like that was completely unrealistic for me to have been told that. Roofers: I can't say a great lot about the roofers themselves as the lead man on the job spoke very broken English and always referred me to speak to one of the Supervisors. Project Managers: The Project Managers (Tom S. and Brad) were never around for more than an hour (if that) on any given day. They gave me the impression that Tom was the stay on the ground, stay clean type that made sure the guys showed up for work, while Brad was the hands-on, climb on the roof type. I've never really figured out why it was necessary to have two Project Managers on one job, as I've had many, many contracting jobs done -this was a first to see two. The Project Managers were not easy to reach and as the project came to a close Tom was even harder to reach. Brad had promised to get me his business card, as he was out of cards at the time he introduced himself and then never did, so my communication was solely with Tom by phone. On one occasion when I attempted to reach Tom, my message stated that I am a member of Angie's List and I am trying my hardest not to leave a bad review for the company, but his lack of response would do just that if I did not hear back from him timely. We live in a HOA and there are guidelines about when the workers can start. Tom said the workers would be starting between 5:30-6:00. I told him HOA regs say the workers cannot start before 6:00 and cannot use power tools before 8:00. Tom consistently acted as if he never heard me say anything about the 6:00 start time, even if I just told him not 30 seconds before. At one point, completely frustrated with his lack of acknowledging these guidelines, I said 'If we are fined by the HOA, the bill belongs to you!" -He laughed and said "understood." I understand Arizona heat in June, but they've had our money since 04/06/2013. Upon Completion: We were told the job would take anywhere from 4-5 days, possibly less. The job took 3 weeks and even longer to finish the problem areas. There were many areas of the roof visible from the ground that looked very sloppy and we made a list of those items that needed to be fixed. Tom said Lyons has a formal process they go through where both parties make a list of things that both see that need to be fixed (him as well) and he would have us walk on the roof with him to complete the list and once the list is ready, the roofer comes back and completes the list. He said that then and only then would we sign off on that work and pay the balance. This process took forever! It was a complete nightmare and there was no such "formal list" that I ever saw, in fact, Tom called us, forgetting about the repairs and "signing off" on them and said something about the job being complete and the balance due. I fired a message right back to him and said "What happened to your formal process whereby you complete the repairs, we sign off agreeing those repairs have been done to our satisfaction and then and only then, we pay the balance due." Tom called and left us a message apologizing saying that he forgot all about this part and that we are right, more does need to be done before the transaction is complete. After the repairs were completed and we inspected, we called Tom to say "We approve of the repairs and we are ready to sign off on them. We will be waiting for your call." --We never got that call. The next call we got was from the Controller (Greg) of the company asking why we haven't paid the balance due! I explained what a nightmare this entire process has been. By this time, it is 08/01/2013, nearly 4 months later! The Controller said he would contact Tom because his notes were very ambiguous and see if he could get him to complete the process. Sunday, August 08/04/2013, we received a voice mail from Tom. His message sounded as if he had no idea what we were talking about: "I got a message that you want to meet with me." ---Exasperated with the entire process (or lack of a so-called formal one), I called the office at Lyon's and paid the bill in full, which I would have gladly done weeks ago had we known there was no "formal process" and no need to meet again as Tom had indicated. Tom led us to believe it was imperative for him that we sign off on the repairs. So in short, it took FOUR MONTHS FROM BEGINNING TO END and it was no easy ride. SUGGESTION: I am without words for much of my experience, but one big suggestion I have is that 1/3 of the total amount of the job should NEVER be collected unless the company is willing to give a firm start date the very day 1/3 is put down. I understand $1000 or $500 to hold the job until they can get it on the books and provide a firm start date, but 1/3 of a job in excess of $15,000 is over the top. Lesson learned for us!

Thank you for taking the time to allow us to identify opportunities to improve our process. My sincere apologies for the issues that have made this less than an ideal re-roofing process. I have escalated this case to the owners of the company and rest assured you will be contacted directly to assess and remediate this situation.
