The 26 year old Trane unit suffered hail damage in October 2011. Since the unit was so old new parts could not be obtained to "fix" the unit. Our home owners insurance covered the replacement of the new unit ($5,500). I went on Angie's List and read great things about Howard Air. David came to my home, took pictures of the damaged unit for me to send to our insurance company and provided me with a written estimate of a new Trane unit. David thoroughly explained the entire process of removing the old unit from the roof with a crane, and installing the new unit. Once the new unit was installed they went through a check list and explained everything from the warrantee to programming the thermostat and politely and professionally answering any and all of the questions I could think up! They had also looked at our existing duct work and suggested replacing it since it was cracked and far from efficient. They gave me an estimate of $1,800+tax to replace the duct work. I explained I had to wait until we received our tax refund. They offered me several options to pay for the work. They were totally understanding and treated me as a "person" rather than just another job. So, once I knew we had a tax refund coming, I called and asked them to replace the duct work. They showed up on time, were polite, friendly and professional. Kyle and Steve created a work of art in my attic!
Description of Work: December 29, 2011 : Removed a 26 year old Trane heat pump that had hail damage. Installed a new Trane heat pump. Suggested replacing existing flex-tube duct work since it was 26 years old, cracked and rapidly deteriorating. March 21, 2012 Removed existing flex-tube duct work. Installed new R-6 foil back flex duct work.

Would never recommend this company.
Description of Work: I set up an appointment for a total new HVAC system, approx value of $6000. The company made an appointment for 10:00 a.m. on a date certain. At 12:30 p.m. the salesman called and said he was running late and would be there about 1:00 p.m. I waited for 2 1/2 hours and was never contacted. If that's how they handle a prospective buyer of their services, I would hate to have to wait to get service from them when it's either 110 degrees out or 35 degrees and need service asap, when they have already had my business!!!!! Use them at your own peril!!!! I went with another company who was recommened by several friends at a very competitive price.

I have a combined air conditioner / heater on the new house I bought just a few months ago, and the heater has not worked since I moved in. Someone from Howard Air came to inspect it and gave me a price of about $750 to repair it. He said it was 11 years old and that after the repairs he would do, I might need more repairs in the future. He showed me what he found wrong with the a/c-heater. When I saw how old it was and the poor shape it was in, I made the decision to buy a new a/c-heater. The repair person did not push me into doing this. The salesperson, Dave, showed up on time and spent two hours inspecting my old system on the roof, inspecting the attic, and making a diagram of my house for a computer analysis of my air conditioner / heater needs. While he was doing this, he gave me a book to read that had a lot of useful information about air conditioners and heaters and also about Howard Air. They've been in business for 32 years, and I can see why - they do a great job! Dave sat down with me and went over what he found, including pictures that he took and showed me on his laptop. He showed me five different models to choose from. He answered all my questions and did not rush me. I told him a quiet, efficient unit was important to me, and he showed me which units would provide those qualities. I chose a mid-priced model. He discussed the pros and cons of keeping the swamp cooler or getting rid of it; there were more cons, and I decided to get rid of it. He said they would take it away and put a cover over the vent hole on the roof at no extra charge. He would also have a carpenter cover the two swamp cooler vents in my ceiling at no extra charge. Howard Air has a finance arrangement through Wells Fargo where you can pay for your unit over three years with no interest. This was great, because I just bought the house, and this was an unexpected expense! As Dave said would be done, someone called me the day before coming, and the installers, Jeff and Jared, called me right before their arrival. They arrived right on time at 7 am. They were very friendly and professional. They worked straight through till noon or 1 and told me how it was going as they worked. They tested the a/c and heat, and they both worked great, and the unit was very quiet. An inspector from Howard Air came to make sure the installation was going well and to do some testing. Jared spent time showing me how to program the thermostat, and he programmed it for me. He left me the booklet on how to use the thermostat. He then went through a checklist of everything they did and explained every item to me. We went onto the roof together, where he showed me different aspects of the unit and the work they did. It is very rare to have service people spend the time with you to answer all your questions as all the Howard Air personnel did. Dave was very knowledgeable, and Jeff and Jared were thorough, professional, clean, and friendly! I will be getting a service agreement with Howard Air and am so glad to know that such a good company will be taking care of my a/c-heater.
Description of Work: Howard Air removed my old air conditioner / heater unit from my roof and replaced it with a Trane air conditioner / heater. They also removed the swamp cooler on my roof that I did not want. They replaced some of the ducts in the attic and replaced the grate covering the filter in my ceiling. They installed a Trane thermostat, showed me how to use it, and set it for me.

My seven year old 4T heat pump stopped functioning while I was out of town. The unit in question had been purchased/installed via a home warranty plan. The intallers back then had not been of the highest quality and took shortcuts, the result being the unit aged faster than it should have. I had had experience with Howard Air before for a rental I own and appreciated their punctuality and professionalism, their thorough knowledge. So I called them again. They came out within a few days (my convenience drove the appointment time), and accurately diagnosed the problem (I had had warning this would be coming up and so knew what to expect). They offered several options, from repairs to replacement. They told me the upsides and downsides to each. I chose to replace with a comparable sized, but higher efficiency system. Many of the repairs needed from the shabby older installation process were a part of the standard pricing offered by Howard Air. I also elected to have additional repairs and upgrades performed, including resizing the uptake ducts so that both of my systems, the newly installed one and one that is only 2 years old would not be loaded down. I wanted new air return boxes (the vents that pull the air in) because the ones I had were custom sized, intended for use with electrostatic filters that I no longer had. Howard Air's installers were punctual and efficient, as well as knowledgeable. They installed the new AC unit, making the repairs, and along the way uncovered a different but dangerous problem created by the installers of the old system -- the gauge of the wire powering the unit was too low, and the current being drawn had overheated things to the point of melting the end caps. Howard fixed that as well. The sales manager came out to inspect the work while it was in progress. The great thing about Howard is that they do not just come out and schlop a box on your roof and call it done. They perform a thorough analysis, documenting all of the potential problems you do have or may encounter, and provide you with a breakdown of costs and benefits. They do not pressure their customers, simply provide information and let them make their own informed decisions. They do follow-up, make recommendations for improving the life of your new systems. They're extremely friendly, and you always talk to an actual person, rather than a machine. This is the way all service work should be conducted.
Description of Work: Installed a new heat pump system, and performed needed repairs to the ductwork. Replaced two custom-sized air return boxes to enable me to use standard air filters instead of expensive custom-sized ones. Replaced uptake intake ducts to correctly-sized ducts to reduce load on both heat pumps. Corrected several other problems caused by the shabby installation of the older system. Inspected overall HVAC system. Did drywall work and painting to fill in space left when replacing larger air return grates.

The guy who came out was very nice. He explained to me that I might have to get a new air conditioner unit and he didn't try to sell it to me. He was just concerned about the crack and I probably have to get a new unit soon because of the furnace. He let me know that there was a problem. He cleaned everything out. He was very nice. Everything worked fine. I would probably buy a new air conditioner from them, if I have to. I trust them.

I was recommended to Howard Air from my parents who have used them a couple times in the past who raved about them. I must have just gotten them on a bad day or something, but this review is my personal experience not that of my parents. First off I requested contact through their website, left my email and phone number. I did this late in the evening so I did not expect anything until the next day. The next afternoon I recieved an email, not a call but an email and I just happened to find it in my junk mail asking what kind of unit I was looking for. I replied and explained in the email that I am looking for a midline unit that works for a decent price. I don't need a 17seer $15k Trane unit, but something that is decent and has a good warranty. Apparenty that is not what they are looking sell because I have not heard anything since in email or phone call. I figured at a minimum I would have been called, every other company that I contacted through their website called with in a couple hours and were more than willing to go over what I was looking for and set up an estimate. Its too bad because when I talked with my parents they were very surprised because they contacted them through their website and received a call within a couple hours, but like i said this is my review not that of my parents. Will I call them again? Not unless I am in dire straights or have a can't beat offer.
Description of Work: Long story short my downstairs unit went out and I needed a replacement asap because it is getting cold. I have been contacting several different companies for estimates on a new heatpump system.

Overall very well. The workers were on time every day and cleaned up at the end of each day. Originally it was supposed to be a two and one-half day project but it ended up taking five work days -- 3.5 days with the AC techs and the additional 1.5 days with the drywall/paint guys. They sent a very experienced lead tech for the project (Denny) and supplemented him with visits from their engineer (Forest) to assist in making sure that the new system would be balanced. They did a manual J and prepared all the paperwork for the APS rebates so I only had to sign the documents. They also prepared the document for the federal tax credit. They purchased the manufacturer extended warranty and I received it back in the mail from Trane in about two weeks from the installation date. They were not the least expensive provider I had bids from but they seemed to be the one that identified the most problems and the best remedies. The system is fully installed now but they have agreed to come back in the late spring to check it out and make sure it was all set for air conditioning season as well. While heating is not a big issue in Maricopa county, the system runs quietly (mostly on stage one as that is all that is needed) and seems rock steady. The upstairs (2 ton) unit is so quiet that I have to open the air handler closet door to hear it running. Everything was done neatly and they even neatened up the wires from my alarm system that ran through their work area. The proof will be in the summer when the temperature reaches 115+ degrees. But so far I am very pleased with the quality of the work and I am counting on the company's satisfaction guarantee that come summer I will be equally pleased. I am a little concerned that when the unit is running full bore in those hot sumer dog days, that the system will be noiser than I want. They have advised me that if that is so, they already have some ideas of how to mitigate that. I did a lot of research before soliciting bids and determined that having a good contractor was as important if not more important as the make and model of the equipment. I limited my bids to companies that were all As on Angie's List and top rated at the BBB. The project was much more expensive than a simple remove and replace but I wanted a system that would last me another 24 years and provide me the comfort I want during those years. I think Howard Air has done that.
Description of Work: Analyzed my system (two heat pumps, split systems, boht 24 years old with one five ton for the downstairs and a two ton for the upstairs). Identified that the existing returns were not sealed and were undersized. In addition, I have two rooms off my garage that were added that had supply ducts for each room but no return (only a transfer grate into the house). I purchased two new top of the line systems (old systems still worked but I made the decision that I was living on borrowed time and wanted to replace in the winter). Two Trane XL20i heat pumps with matched Hyperion communicating air handlers(TAM 8) and matching XL900 communicating thermostats. They also closed the old returns for the downstairs and put in and sealed two replacement returns and ran ducts and added two new returns in the rooms off the garage). Also sealed the returns upstairs. Included Trane ten years labor and parts warranty to go with Howard Air's own ten year labor and parts warranty. Hung the new return ducts and built them into a soffit and texturized and painted the soffit. drywalled over the former transfer grate and closed returns and texturized and painted them. Moved the condensor units further away from the house and put them on new pads and installed vertical discharge covers to replace the standard ones. Inspected and sealed any reachable ducts (primarily the ones for upstairs as the downstairs ducts were pretty much in enclosed soffits). Added filter boxes under the air handlers with magnetic latches.

My experience with them was very positive. They were every professional. What I really appreciated was that the sales person was really informative and not pushy. They were trying to get me to buy a smaller unit but then I decided to go with the same kind that I had. They gave me a unit on which I can get a rebate on so the price was good. They did all the paper work as well. They were great. I also got tax credit because of the particular unit. They sold me the unit on which I can get the tax credit. I will definitely use them again in the future.

Howard Air installed a new air conditioning unit for us. A first we didn't like how the unit was installed with concerns about roof leaks. Howard Air took the unit off and called in 3 additional personnel to install it to our satisfaction. They took the time to discuss with us our concerns and different options to address and resolve the issue. They did this at no increased cost. They were professional and patient. We would definately recommend Howard Air. They were slightly higher then other quotes we received but they installed a more efficient unit for just a slight increase in cost which will pay for itself in a year.

From my first phone call to schedule a visit for a technician to come out to the very end of the job, the experience was very professional, I was well informed about what the issue was (the roofers not replacing a fuse properly) and was pleased that the technician did not try to take advantage of the situation and make it seem like there was a much larger problem then there actually was. By being honest, they have gained a loyal customer. I am only happy to recommend them to anyone who has AC/Heating unit issues.
Description of Work: My heater had just stopped working without any prior issues. I tried to reset it but that didn't work. So I checked Angie's List and saw Howard Air and the recommendations people were making. I was very impressed by their promptness, courtesy, and professionalism. It turned out that the roofers that my HOA had hired to reroof our building hadn't replaced a fuse in the unit properly when they had finished working on the roof. While here, David, the technician, ran a complete check on the unit and washed off the system. I was very impressed and have to admit that from now on I will be using only Howard Air for any future work/servicing needs on my AC/Heating system.

Already said it all. Five star service all the way!
Description of Work: Howard Air came to my home to repair a freon leak....they were prompt and courteous. The freon leak was severe on my 10 year old unit. They suggested replacement with a higher efficiency unit with significant discounts and rebates. They returned within days, replaced my old unit, filled out the paperwork for rebates, credited my earlier service call toward my new air conditioner and left me a happy camper! My electric bills have already dropped. I will recommend them in a hearbeat.

We are very pleased and believe that they have high standards and DELIVER quality work with tremendous customer service.
Description of Work: A/C Unit was not functioning and after placing a call to them in mid-afternoon, they arrived within an hour. Turned out to have been something that was not a "quick fix", yet as of this writing (about 24 hours later) I can report that the unit is working and all is well. If there was a category for above and beyond, they would have gotten high marks. We were given all options and they arrived back on the scene first thing this morning so that we could decide what steps to take next... Though it was not easy to have spent the money required to do the repair (the problem was a big one, and the unit is/was ancient), this company is the kind of company that you want handling your home (or business) each and every time since you know they represent real quality and long-term thinking work and not just "band-aids and chicken wire". I personally will use them for all future air conditioning and heating needs. Everyone, from the person that answered the phone, to the people that I met at the property in person, was fantastic.

Wayne, the service technician arrived around 12:45. He was pleasant and listened carefully to my explanation of the symptoms. He then quickly identified a failed capacitor (which had been replaced less than 3 months previously by another company), and also identified a failing connector relay. I agreed to the repairs, and he quickly handled them. We then discussed long-term strategies for my heat pumps (they are 14 years old). WHAT A PLEASURE! This is my first experience with an A/C technician where I didn't feel like he was trying to sell me a new system installation -- in my previous 10+ interactions with A/C folks, they always seemed like they were pressuring me to buy something big from them -- not trying to solve my problem. I will definitely use Howard Air in the future.
Description of Work: One of our heat pumps failed -- the outside compressor stopped running, resulting in no cooling. Called for service at 8:30am. They scheduled an appointment for between 12 and 4pm the same day.

I had a new heat pump installed a year ago. I was plagued inefficient air flow as well as duct separation issues from the onset. The outlet of the heat pump did not line up with the inlet for the house. This year I used Howard Air to service the units, which I previously reported on. When I had another air duct failure, I called them. They mad a temporary repair and provided me with an estimate for re-engineering the installation, which I accepted. As a result of the re-installation, the air flow has improved dramatically, the unit run time has decreased, thus saving energy. I will no longer have duct separation problems as the ducts line up with out have ito use flex duct the for the connection. With the new mounts the unit runs much quieter. I no longer have to worry about condensate build up in the unit as it is level with proper condensate drain. The control wiring is now in conduit with a junction box at the roof line for easy change out if necessary.
Description of Work: Howard Air reinstalled one of my heat pump units and rewired the control wiring on a second unit. The re-installation involved providing a new base for the unit, rotating it 180 degs, redoing the duct-work between the unit and the house, providing a new condensate drain, and rewiring (both for power and control) the unit.

Description of Work: Replaced old a/c units and furnaces with high seer heat pumps. We also added central air cleaner and humidifier.I had three special requests:move one of the thermostats(Howard had drywall repaired),cover old furnace stack holes in roof-instead of just capping stack(Howard had roofer come out who covered holes and found matching-though discontinued-tile to complete repair),lastly I installed 6 foot mesh frames covered with sun screen around the heat pumps as the afternoon sun is nasty. This required the units to exhaust straight up,not horizontally as is standard(vertical exhaust tops were supplied)

Downstairs AC unit failed on Saturday and was making horrible noises. Did not want to pay for an emergency visit but called on Saturday and was given a Monday morning appt. HVAC technician, Gabe showed up at 9:30 AM which was well within the 8 - 12 window promised. He was extremely courteous and professional and he explained everything he was doing. He determined that there was a short in a capacitor for the condensor fan. He easily could just have said "It's a 12 year old unit and needs to be replaced" so I was thrilled with a failed part diagnosis. He checked over both AC units for freon and operability and went the extra distance to adjust inside AC registers for optimal cooling in our vaulted ceiling, multi-windowed living room. Very pleased with this company and Gabe. I would highly recommend Howard Air to anyone.

Kyle & Mike arrived a bit early and went right to work after going over in detail what they were going to do...never stopping execept for a drink of water or to get tools. They had the old heat pump ready for removal when the crane arrived. They instructed me on how to wire the thermostat and use it, since I had requested to install the thermostat myself. For the installation of the new heat pump, the crane arrived while they were finishing prep work on the roof, but they made sure the prep work was completed to their satisfaction before having the unit lifted to the roof. After the heat pump was installed, they thoroughly explained what they were doing to finish the job, advised me on what was done so I could tell the roofers what had been done, and made sure that I had the appropriate contact information in the event of any problems. They went through the checklist of work that had been done as well. All-in-all they completed the job in less time than predicted. Immensely pleased with two things: 1. There was no dilly-dally...these men worked without pause, except to grab water or a tool. 2. They kept me well-informed about what they were doing and why, factually, treating me as a reasonably knowledgeable customer, and gave straight-to-the-point answers to questions.
Description of Work: After wonderful maintenance service this summer, Heat Pump began dying and leaking. Howard Air sent a tech out last Thursday to see if they could stop the leaks until a scheduled installation today. The tech couldn't do anything and didn't charge me for the call. Today, the Heat Pump was replaced by Howard Air.

The heat pump service was everything that I expected. Later had a heat pump failure that they were not able to respond to in an after hours situation. Have a schedule appointment with them the take care of some control system issues. My failed heat pump is to be repaired along with the control system issue.
Description of Work: Werviced 3 heat pumps and provide a quotation for rewiring the heat pump controls, which I accepted

Overall very satisfied - as my cold air is blowing through the house once again, thanks to Myke and Howard A/C! :)
Description of Work: Great service - prompt ; actually earlier than originally scheduled! My service rep today was Myke - he was very friendly, courteous, and willing to take time to explain what he was doing and why. My A/C fan had apparently gone out, due to the starting capacitor failing (I have a dual run cap), so he left the original cap installed for the compressor, and then added a smaller one dedicated to the fan. He also checked my freon and then was able to answer my questions about what to set the temperature at on a daily basis, for optimal usage, etc... They gave me the 10% discount for finding them through Angie's list which was great. The only thing I wished for would've been a slightly lower price on the capacitor, but that has nothing to do with Myke.

I called Howard Air on 9/1 and they were able to make an appointment for the next afternoon, between 3-5PM. Wayne the technician called as promised within 1/2 hour of arrival. He was very courteous, professional, and extremely helpful! He diagnosed our problem quickly, listened to our financial concerns, and provided answers. He was terrific; I will definitely ask for him when we call again next spring for a maintenance check.
Description of Work: HVAC wasn't running right; provided estimate for necessary cleaning/repairs.
