Very simple. We checked a bunch of vendors and decided to go with Chas Roberts. The down to earth sales person, Tony was a key factor. This is a person we see in our community often. We wanted efficiency and got an 18 SEER Trane. Pretty expensive, but a great machine. Our AC use and bill dropped almost 80% which is hard to believe, but we keep detailed track of these things since our home is solar powered. On top of our Solar LEase which is about $60 per month our SRP bills were: June $0.0 - due to solar kwh banking July $0.0 - due to solar kwh banking August $27 Sept $24 Oct $18 - minimum SRP for service The install was done as we expected and done well. No problems and no issues.
Description of Work: We got two service calls "free" as part of the install package. The Service man came when expected and checked the outdoor condenser system and up in the ceiling to check the AC, furnace and blower. All was good. No issues. They will return in 6 months to check prior to cooling season.

Very Well indeed. The system has worked perfectly over the past 6+ months. We are now in heating phase and this is working well too. The biggest news is the reduction in energy. We track this constantly since our home is solar powered and we care about this kind of thing. Overall, in the cooling months of June-Sept we saw a nearly 80% reduction in kWh usage and a major drop in our SRP bill. Because of solar and the new AC system, our highest SRP bill was $27 (August) and it was $99 last year. So, go solar, go high SEER Trane, go Chas Roberts. Rich and Jen
Description of Work: Our old system was 16 years old and we thought it needed a replacment. We contacted a number of vendors including Chas. In the end we went with Chas for a number of reasons. We checked Angie's List, BBB and other sources. While no one was perfect in every way, Chas seemed good overall. We elected to get a 18 SEER Trane with new furnace. Once we signed the install date was set. The three man crew came within minutes of agreed upon time. They were very efficient and gave us continuous updates. They finished everything in 6 hours and then tested the system. They then trained us on various aspects. Another guy came out a few days later to inspect the work. He found some very minor things and did some more training. While the price was rather high, we are happy with the system thus far. You get what you pay for.

Chas Roberts has been to my home three times in the past two months to repair my air conditioner, and the problem has not been resolved. The first tech said that the freon had leaked out of my air conditioner unit. He replaced the freon and indicated that he did not see any other issues with the unit. Three days later, the unit failed a second time. The same tech returned and indicated that a part had burned out and needed to be replaced. He replaced the part and agin assured me that the problem was resolved. The unit failed again just two months later. I requested that a different service technician be sent because the first tech clearly had not properly diagnosed the problem. The second tech asked to see the unit in the attic, which the first tech had never mentioned. The second service tech did go into the attic and informed me that the freon had leaked out of the coil and that the coil would need to be replaced. When I asked about the cost, the tech LAUGHED while informing me that labor would be "very expensive." I was appalled by his completely unprofessional attitude. I told him that I did not find this situation humorous, and he laughed again. At that point, Chas Roberts lost my business forever. It is disrespectful and completely inexcusable to find humor at the expense of your customer. To add insult to injury, the tech then showed me a price list and indicated that labor would cost me $1400, which is ridiculous. I have since obtained quotes from several other companies, and I have discovered that Chas Roberts is horribly overpriced.
Description of Work: Chas Roberts replaced freon that had leaked out of the unit, but they never repaired the leak. Thus, all of the freon leaked out again just two months later. They also replaced a supposedly burned out transformer.

One of the features of this house was that it included pulling in fresh air from the outside. All of the electronic air cleaner's I'd seen before this unit had been boxes that were installed in the stack just before the air was conditioned, but for some reason the electronic air cleaner was installed in the air return. That wouldn't have been a problem except that they ran the fresh air duct into the air return duct BEHIND the air cleaner! Dirty air mixed with just cleaned air? That's like connecting a cold water line to the hot water heater's output line. Idiotic! The other issue I had was the first time I cleaned the unit I discovered that the metal pre-filter was bent. I called to ask about getting a replacement, but instead got a lecture about being to rough with the filter - at least until I explained that'd been Chas Roberts that had bent it. If you see a Chas Roberts sticker on your thermostat rip it off and find another company to help.
Description of Work: Back in 2002 Hacienda Builders built my last house. I choose to have a whole house electronic air cleaner to fight allergies as an upgrade. Chas. Roberts was the HVAC subcontractor on the job.

The builder spec'd a cheap Goodman HVAC system and had Chas Roberts install and start up the system. The blower motor was not installed properly - bolts were stripped - so when the motor runs it makes a lot of noise. The compressor system was also improperly primed when it was started up and has never worked properly. Due to the improper installation this unit is dying before it's time and will have to be replaced.
Description of Work: I'm buying a house as an investment and had the HVAC system checked out by Howard Air. The original HVAC was installed by Chas Roberts in 2005.

Chas Roberts company logo was on our termostat so I called them first. Once they had our address they quicly pulled up the service record from the previous owner of our house. Their service rep came out immediately and went up in the attic to check the air handlers. He quickly found that one of the airhandlers had a bad blower motor. He called his office, and they sent someone out with the correct replacement motor while he was still on site. He installed the new motor and everything was up and running with a couple short hours. Very pleased!
Description of Work: Began having trouble with one of our A/C units. The compressor would run, but little or no cool air was evident.

Prior to beginning the repair, the technician advised that the cost of the repair woild be approximately $500. To help me determine if that was a reasonable figure, I asked how long it would take to complete the repair. I was told it would take approximately 3 hours. Satisfied that $500 for a three hour job was reasonable, I approved the technician to proceed with the repair. Twenty minutes later, the technician advised that he was finished with the replacement of the valve. I expressed my displeasure at being misled about the amount of time the repair would take and the reasonableness of the cost. His response was that I had approved the $500 cost and there as nothing he could do. I immediately called to their corporate office and asked to speak with a supervisor/manager. A man who identified himself as a first line supervisor, listened to my complaint and basically repeated what the technician had said. I asked to speak with a manager and was told that no manager was available. I asked that a manager return my call. No return call was received. The next day, I called again and asked to speak with the president of the company. I was forwarded to an executive assistant, who listed to my complaint but adised that the president was unavailable. I asked that the president return my call. No return call was received from the president. I sent a letter of complaint to the president of Chas Roberts A/C, via registered mail. No one from the company saw fit to contact me, in response to my letter. IN THE FUTURE I WILL NOT HAVE ANY BUSINESS DEALINGS WITH CHAS ROBERTS A/C. I have had occasion to hire an air conditioning repair three times, since this incident. Each time I contacted Parker and Sons A/C. Each time they were timely, courteous, effective in making their repairs, and fair in their pricing. It's nice to have an alternative to call upon.
Description of Work: A valve in the air conditioning system had malfunctioned, causing the A/C in one-half of our house to be inoperative. Chas Roberts A/C sent a technician to our home, in a timely manner. He repaired the malfunction and restored the system to operation.

Chas Roberts was the company that installed the original A/C unit when the house was built 14 years ago and we're the only/original owner. That unit was a Carrier and was the base model used by the builder. Chas Roberts did all our routine servicing over the years and the only major repair ($400) a few years back. Because Carrier had been a reliable brand and Chas Roberts had been a reliable service and repair company over the years we used the company and purchased another Carrier system. We bought a new system because the existing system simply wore out this year and could no longer keep up with the Arizona heat. We met with Tony to discuss brands, models, and options. He was on time, had all the information, was able to answer all our questions, and had some reasonable recommendations on how to improve our climate control. We did a lot of independent research on everything after meeting with Tony. We ultimately went with a Carrier Infinity system and some modifications to the duct work. The installers were on time and professional. The first unit they brought with them was damaged inside the crate when they opened it and they took it back to the warehouse and obtained a replacement unit right away. The replacement unit they retrieved had some minor cosmetic damage on one panel when it was opened. There was no functional damage. Made me wonder if maybe there was a forklift mishap in the warehouse. Anyway, unfortunately, by this time, it was getting late in the day and we had few options if we wanted to have air conditioning working that evening. The field supervisor and salesperson were both contacted and got back to me and assured me they would get the panel replaced. Because it was not a functional issue with the damage, we had the installers continue with the work. The installers continued with their work. They were very efficient and by the end of the day, despite the setbacks, everything was done and we had a cool house again. The next week a quality assurance inspector from Chas Roberts came out to inspect all of the work and make sure everything was done correctly. Chas Roberts had to order a replacement panel from Carrier to replace the one that was damaged. Carrier was a little slow in getting the part shipped but ultimately it did come in and Chas Roberts came out while I was at work and replaced it so I didn't have to take any time off work to wait for them or meet them. The new unit works great and we are very happy with it. I evaluate companies not based on whether there is a problem but by how the problem is resolved. The issue with the minor damage on the panel was handled well and I'll continue to use Chas Roberts.
Description of Work: Had our entire A/C system replaced. This included a new air handler/blower in the attic and condensing unit/compressor outside. We also had some duct work modified to improve noise levels and air distribution.

I had a Honeywell thermostat that failed and was still under full warranty. Honeywell told me that my original service provider needed to do the replacement for the no cost replacement. When I called Chas Roberts about it they told m the first day they wuldn't even to the service call for me. When I told them what Honeywell said, they told me I had to wait for a supervisor to make the decision, but it was too late that day. On the next day I was told they would do it but would charge me a service charge and installation charge of $150 to just plug the new thermostat on the wall. I them called Honeywell back that agreed it was ridiculous and gave me a list of other providers to go with if Chas Roberts would not change their mind.I then had to call back Chas Roberts two more times before getting a final answer from another supervisor that did not change the price. And on top of all of that, they could not get to my home for 3 more days. This is the second time we have had Chas Roberts jerk us around on price and service scheduling. We have gone with other two HVAC companies that have been more reasonable with price and same day scheduling. I highly recommend anybody who has a choice NOT TO USE CHAS ROBERTS.

We were assisted by two technicians on separate days. The first technician, who simply completed an estimate, was terrible. He didn't wear shoe covers when he entered our home, and he was rude toward my wife. The second technician, who actually completed the suggested repairs, was very professional, but, given the fact that he worked for less than 30 minutes and I paid over $300, I don't think that he deserved the equivalent of $600 per hour. I will NEVER call this company again. They're dishonest, and their "flat-rate prices" are shameful. They take advantage of people.
Description of Work: I just paid Chas Roberts, a Phoenix-area company, a $350 labor charge to replace the broken condenser motor on my AC unit. The motor was covered under the unit's warranty, but Chas Roberts felt entitled to $350, even though the work literally took only 25 minutes. Before leaving, they told me that I need to also replace the inner coil because it's leaking coolant. Their "flat rate labor price" for the inner coil is over $1,000, even though the technician admitted that the work would take less than two hours. I'm unwilling to pay anywhere near such a high price, and I'm outraged to find that Chas Roberts feels entitled to so much money for such simple, quick work. The part they installed cost around $100, but they wanted over $300 to install it, and it took less than thirty minutes. This is a shady company.
