Description of Work: I had a rattle sound in my attic. air was working. I found the $5 diagnostic special so made appointment. I was given a 7-7:30am arrival, service provider got here at 8. Not a problem, just a fact. I was told a bracket had broken and the motor vibrated off the housing causing the wheel to wear against the base. The needed repair was to replace the wheel and motor. The wheel was damaged and the motor, well, it was "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" (repeatedly), to replace for various reasons. 1-because the unit is 12 years old, 2-because it was operating out of balance, the bearings could have been damaged, 3- if I didn't replace and later it needed it, it would be another service visit and labor @$150/hr. ...and the estimate was at least 2 hours. |I said to order parts. Then I was told it was "HIGHLY RECOMMENDED" not to run the unit until repaired. When asked if he could anchor the bracket until the repair, he said "more damaged could result, labor would be charged, as well as labor to undo when the parts came in, causing more labor time...and money, and after all, there is high voltage to consider, and parts are usually in within in 24 hours and I could track online if I wanted to". |I agreed to let him leave the unit disabled. I said I may do some due-diligence and asked what would happen if I canceled the install of either the motor or both the wheel and motor. He said they simply send them back, no obligation to me. He said he'd order parts immediately and that was at 9am on Tuesday. No word on Wednesday so I went online that evening and couldn't find how to track. I contacted live chat, who could not help me:( Called at 9am on second day and was told truck just arrived, maybe part was there. After waiting past 3pm on second day, I contacted an independent contractor, licensed in HVAC. He agreed the wheel needed replaced but said he'd repair with the old motor as it had no obvious signs of damage. He also anchored the unit temporarily so I could run the air while waiting on the wheel. I tried to get the part number from Chas Roberts prior to the second estimate, and they would not release it. Said I'd have to be licensed. (the part number is on the part, I just had to go into the attic if I wanted to see it and it would have saved a little time). When I cancelled the parts, no one asked why. |Over all, I don't think Chas Roberts did anything wrong. (except leave me over 2 days without air in August, I have a large home and have two units so one was functioning, just not main living area). I think they bait with a $5 special and then do the hard sell by HIGHLY RECOMMENDING and repeatedly mentioning that if I elected repairs other than those HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, I would have to sign off liability....blah blah blah! |My second HVAC guy was matter of fact, and did not bad mouth CR, but was willing to make repairs that were needed now. He did not set a money timer and disappear into my attic! |Also, one of the "options" I was given for my "12 year old system is to replace entirely since all these little repairs are futile if the whole system goes down, which is bound to happen eventually" and had I done that, my second HVAC guy said that it would have made future replacement of my second, now functioning unit, impossible without moving the first because of attic access. That would have been a big problem later down the line. I now have a plan to get estimates and pro-actively replace both units in the next 2-3 years... in the wintertime! Those kind of "highly recommended" actions are what I found most helpful.
