Jim, was really helpful with us-we needed guidance with color selection. The painters did 3 and 4 coats in some area's to ensure stucco was covered. Our goal was to get a completely different look on our 20 year home. Seriously, we have the nicest painted home in the neighborhood. They were fair with their pricing as an Angie list customer and I would hire them again in a heartbeat!

Excellent. My HOA contacted me to paint my home (2,500 sq ft/2 stories) and I requested around 10 bids from various Angie's List contractors. John from Charles & Alex was the first to contact me (that night), the first to have an estimate and was the lowest price but a good margin. I got all my HOA paperwork in order and work started a few days later that included power washing, stucco repair and prepping the wood fascia. House was done in 3 days and looks fantastic. I would definitely hire John again. *** just a tip. Make sure your HOA paperwork is completed and approved. It'll make everything easier on everyone. When researching contractors, I saw a lot of negative reviews that seems the homeowner didn't have the HOA's blessing and blamed the contractors. ***

I write this review with somewhat mixed feelings as I don’t like to leave negative statements on reviews and I don’t want to disparage a business that does good overall quality work. I was asked by the company representative to leave a fair Angie’s List review so that is what I am going to attempt here. Initial Contact and Estimate: I contacted Charles and Alex Painting because they had an A rating and lot of A reviews. I had received bids from other Angie’s List painters with as many (or more) A reviews. In the end, I felt most comfortable with Charles and Alex Painting because the representative was pretty detailed in his discussion of the work that would be done. My house was built a while ago so there was a bit of prep work that needed to be done and the representative that helped me went through and discussed what would be done. I used the Angie’s List coupon and their bid was still $600 more (after the coupon, before the coupon it would have been about $900 more) than the next highest bid, but I liked the thoroughness and detail of the initial walkthrough so the extra $600 was not a major issue. I would rather have the work done right and pay a little more. At that time I accepted the offer (as I had already received other bids) and I asked to see color samples. The representative offered me a swatch with hundreds of colors. I told him that I wanted light gray with a medium or darker gray accent (for shutters and the facing). He recommended two different tabs within the swatch that had 4 colors each. One of them he said would be a little more blue-gray and the other more of a true gray. I told him that I did not want anything blue-gray. So he recommended Wolf Gray for the lighter gray and Sheet Metal for the darker accent. He said that these were not blue. He also told me that they look much darker on the swatch than they will appear on the house. The representative was very nice and ordered small samples from Dunn-Edwards that I picked up of 4 different gray colors. In the end I went with his recommendation for the colors. The Job: The workers were prompt, clean, and did superb work. The total work took less than two days (on the first day the crew worked less than 10am-5pm and on the second day they showed up after 8am and left before 5pm). They spent about a day prepping the house (all of day 1 and the beginning of day 2 (day 1 was not a full day). They did the following prep work thoroughly: power washed the house, taped off windows and perimeter of the house, moved landscaping rock away from house and exterior wall, scraped old paint, primed older wood, fixed holes and defects in the house (there were quite a few since the house is older), and they probably did a lot more. On the rest of day two they did the painting and clean up. The paint job was thorough and well done and the clean up was very well done (another review said this was a negative, I found that they were exceptionally thorough on the clean up). Everything about the quality of the work crew was excellent. I cannot say enough good things about the detail of the work crew. The Result: This is where my complaint comes in. The quality of the work was excellent, but the color of the house is bad. I do take final responsibility for choosing the color, but my complaint is that the advice that I received from the company representative was incorrect. I was told that the grays that I was shown on the swatch that he recommended would look lighter when on the whole house and that they would not be blue. Neither of these things are true. They are pretty dark and the main color of the house is very blue in color (see pics). This did not come out in the swatch or in the small sample I was given, but when placed on the whole house it has a very strong blue color to it. The representative said that this was his recommended color and that it would not be blue. So while I have final responsibility for this I think that the company also has some responsibility for the wrong information that was given. When the representative came to my house to collect final payment (less than 20 hours after the project was completed) I expressed my gratitude for the quality of work, but I also noted that I did not like the color. I asked if I could get an estimate for repainting in a different color because I think that the color of the house looks bad. I was not expecting a free re-paint, I knew that this would be costly. I bear much of the responsibility here. The representative consulted with his brother (away from me) and came back and said that he could repaint my house for $1950. By the end of our conversation he came down to $1900 (I was not trying to negotiate). To me this was an extremely unreasonable offer for a re-paint. Here is my reasoning: 1) All of the major preparation of the house was complete (I understand that they would need to go back in and tape everything off, but they would not have to power wash or prep any wood, which took the majority of the original job); 2) they only used between 10-11 gallons of paint on my original job so there isn’t a heavy paint cost (even with a premium paint), which I would certainly be responsible for (I know this was the paint usage because they started with two 5-gallon buckets for the main body and two 1-gallon cans for the accent wood, and there was about 1.5-2 gallons left in a 5-gallon bucket and a little left in one of the cans; 3) the cost of tape and plastic is not high (which again, I would be responsible for); 4) the re-paint would seemingly only take 1 day (since the actual painting of the house only took less than a day, so .25 days to tape and .75 days to paint seems reasonable). So the labor costs would be much lower than the initial job (and I would happily pay for the labor). So unless they are paying their workers (there were 3 workers on each day) more than $400 per day (which they surely don’t) and unless the paint and supplies (for 12 gallons max, plus tape/plastic tarps) costs $700 (which it certainly doesn’t), they were going to make a pretty healthy profit on a repaint that was in part due to their initial incorrect advice. I would have been happy to pay all labor costs and paint/supply costs, and even given a little bit extra for trouble, but I do think that the incorrect advice that I was given should warrant that their profit be substantially cut. I received whole house (prep and everything) bids from Angie’s List A rated painters that were at $2000. These painters also use premiums paints. Because of this it is very hard to justify the price for the repaint that was offered to me. I truly feel insulted with this offer. (As an aside my house is an 1800 sq ft. one story house and a wall/fence for my property). So my question would be: what would all labor fees be for 3 workers (though I doubt 3 full days of work would be needed from 3 workers for this task) to work about a day, plus paint and supplies (12 gallons and tape/plastic tarp, plus the wear on their equipment), plus a little inconvenience fee be? Certainly not much more than $1000-1200 right? This would more than cover all labor and supply fees. In the end the quality of work was excellent. The difficulty is that I was given incorrect advice on the initial consult that swayed my decision (and note I do know that it was my decision). If you know the exact color you want and don’t need advice on paint color or other things, then I would recommend them for their quality. I gave my neighbor their business card because of the quality of the crew. But the difficulty that I have is that there was a problem and the solution offered was not reasonable. I would note that the explanation that was offered was that this repaint bid was $1000 less than an initial bid would have been without the coupon, but please see my points above. Also, again, compared to other bids I received their price was higher than all others and as I look at their historic prices on Angie’s List for other customer’s many were in the range of what my house painting was. I am assuming then that they raise the prices so that the coupon doesn’t really eat into their profits. So if there is any difficulty in your paint job then I don’t know if they are more reasonable with other problems that may arise, but based upon my experience I don’t know that they will work with you in a reasonable way. In the end I have a paint job that is very high quality (which is super important for a healthy home and I am truly thankful for that), but I also have an ugly blue colored house on a color that I was told would not be blue (which is also important). So I left a project that I had saved up for, and was very excited about, with an anxious knot in my stomach and a sick feeling. My wife made a joke about smurfs living in our house. I will likely have to live with this color for a couple of years as I cannot justify spending almost 2k on a repaint of a house. I will likely go with creams/tans/browns when I get it repainted. I am hoping that this will serve as a funny story for me to tell a few years down the road, but right now it just kind of hurts. I have given a rating of C because I want to be reasonable with the quality of the work that was done by the crew.

My experience with Jim the owner of this family business was great! Jim and his team were professional, courteous and did amazing work. I could not believe all the prep work and attention to every detail you could want and some you didn't know you wanted! Their price was fair and did not change from our 1st meeting to completion. I will be using Charles and Alex Painting for the inside of my house in the near future. Their meticulous work and the cleanliness they left my home in was fabulous. I recommend them to the most picky of homeowners. They don't dissapoint!!!

I am completely satisfied. Jimmy called me back the day I texted him. He came out to give me an estimate 2 days later as scheduled. He was thorough with explaining what they do. He went to our HOA office to get the approved colors and picked up the form, returning here with the info and dropped the form off at the office. The price was fair so I did not bother to get other estimates. We scheduled the job for this week. The crew came Wednesday morning right on time. Their prep work was thorough with covering all the windows and raking the rocks away from the house. They completed the job the same day, returning everything back to where it belonged. They painted the garage door and the front door. The house looks better than new. Before they left, our neighbor was signing them up to paint their house.

I am very pleased with the work performed by Charles and Alex painting. Jim was quick to respond to my request for an estimate and provided a very competitive price. The crew was able to start within a week of quote. The quality of work, however, was the most impressive part of the experience. The crew does an amazing amount of prep work, including repairing and priming necessary surfaces - facia, stem walls, stucco. Several of my facia boards were in bad shape from sun and minor water damage. After the re-paint, they looked like new. The crew started promptly on the day promised and worked hard until the job was complete - only took 2 days! Exceeded my expectations. I highly recommend Charles and Alex for any re-painting needs.

The process was fairly easy. We met once and he quoted me a price left me with some color samples. We made an appointment and they started painting a week later. Only thing I would say could be better was their clean up. When they left there were paint spills and garbage in the yard. Also a lot of over spray paint on my new gravel in the front yard. I was left with having to move all my things back to where they were before they painted and trying to clean up the paint spills.

Jim was professional and was available. I contacted him on Angies List late and he was able to see me the next day. Very pleased with the job. Would absolutely would recommend him and his team!! Thank you,

The guys did a wonderful job painting our new home before we moved in. It only took 2 days total. So happy with the color and expertise from Jim. Would definitely hire again and recommend to friends and family.

Jim was responsive and professional! I called for a consultation, and he was available immediately. When he came over, he explained everything he and his team would do: power washing, repairing cracks, sealing windows, minor repair of fascia, and he'd even take down an unused satellite dish left from the previous owners. He and the crew worked fast, starting at 8 and finishing before 2pm! They took care to cover the windows, sidewalks, and driveway from splatter - they did a great job overall!

It was a positive experience. They had some truck problems, but they were very communicative about the delays they were going to have. When they did get out here they did a really great job and made sure it was done on time. This is actually the second time we have used them.

It went wonderfully. Charles and Alex called me within hours of purchasing the deal and worked with my schedule to meet me at home to explain the process and begin reviewing color options. I chose my colors within a couple days and they were back when I was available to complete their work. It took one to prepare for the painting and the actual painting took another day. The attention to detail on preparing and painting was appreciated as the result was well beyond my expectations. Charles and Alex said one of their goals was to make my neighbors jealous and I certainly had many compliments. I highly recommend them and will be my go-to painters next time I need some painting done.

They were the first to respond with an onsite bid. They were the first available. Scheduling was quick and painless. They were on time and did an outstanding job. The job was completed in one day. They worked till nearly 7pm to finish and ensured that I was a very happy customer.

It all went very well at first I thought I would have them do the contracted work for just painting all the fascia board but decided to go ahead with the whole which they did a fine job at a good price....would have no problem hiring them again

This company's work was outstanding. Although it was a small paint job, the son (Jim) called me back the same day and performed the job the next day. He was very professional and all of his work was outstanding. I have a much bigger painting project that will need to be done and I will hire this company again.

Charles and Alex Painting originally estimated the job to take two days, and they completed the entire job in just one day. They were able to match the original paint colors perfectly. Our house looks amazing! We received very high quality work for an extremely reasonable price.

It went really well. They came over on Saturday to go over everything and give us a quote on the additional work. They showed up Monday morning and were done by Tuesday afternoon. Great work, very clean, looks amazing! Could not be more satisfied with their work.

They were fabulous! Our house looks amazing! They followed our HOA guidelines and were on time every day. We had them paint our block wall fence which had some water stains. They treated the water stains before painting and the fence looks beautiful. They are very professional and their clean-up was great. I would highly recommend this wonderful family owned business!
