Calling Benjamin Franklin Plumbing was total waste of whole day for me. We call this company to come to our property, which is an old house that has been divided into apartments, to replace a kitchen faucet, supply lines, and shut off valves. It's an easy job that I would normally do myself, but I did not have all the right tools with me since I live in Texas. The plumber came in and took a look at it, said he would get his tools, and then came back to tell me that he can't do the job because he was not told it's not a single-family home. We told the dispatcher that was the case when we made the appointment. I think the plumber just didn't want to mess with this job, even though it may have been a lot more work for their company. He told me they were going to "waive" the dispatch fee this time. Waive it? What a joke. It was a total waste of my day. I have another company who sounds much more professional coming tomorrow.

As always, things went very well. They are always professional and do the job well. Nathan is friendly and professional and always does a great job. I have been impressed with everyone in this company that I've had contact with. They are definitely way above any other plumbers I've ever used. Highly recommended even if cost is a little higher than some.
Description of Work: Current work was flushing tankless water heater. Have used them for installation of the water heater and for other plumbing issues as needed over the past several years.

The man came and looked and said that the stems needed to be replaced. He quoted $228.00 plus tax for the work. I watched a U-Tube video of how to do the work myself. I went to Lowes and bought two stems for less than $30 and replaced them in about 30 minutes. So conclusion: At approx. $200 labor and a 30 minute job that equates to about $400 per hour labor cost ... ridiculous !!!!

Thank you very much for your review. Even though you chose not to use our service, your opinions are still valuable to our company. Until I operated a business, I used to have the same conclusion about my physician. I would go to his office and he would see me for an ailment. He might spend 5 minutes with me and charged me $65.00. I said to myself, "That's 780.00 an hour!" As I now know in my business, there are a host of expenses "behind the scenes" that go into a service call that are not relative to the labor time spent on the job. Some of those "behind the scene" expenses include insurances, vehicles and maintenance, training, office staff, tools, marketing, fuel, taxes, utilities, employee salary and benefits, licensing, hundreds of replacement parts on each service vehicle and the list could go on and on. So as you can see, it requires a lot of operating costs to get a Benjamin Franklin plumber to your home to perform a repair. Sincerely, Tommy Bowen, Owner

Our hardwood floors warped, indicating a moisture problem, and our handyman went under the house and saw water coming out of the bathtub pipes when we ran the water. Since we had trouble finding a plumber in our small town and had to have them drive 30 minutes from Hot Springs, we didn't see Benjamin Franklin's $49 dispatch fee as a huge problem. While they told us about the dispatch fee over the phone, they did not mention that to go under the house at all, even if no work is done, is another $100. We found this out when the plumber arrived and since I didn't especially want to flush the $49 dispatch fee down the toilet, I agreed to let him diagnose. I found this practice to be fairly shady. When he came back out, he told me that I did not have a leak. He said the pipes "looked fine" and that if we did have a leak, he would have seen standing water under the house. I said that we did have a leak; our handyman had literally seen water pouring out of our pipes when the tub was running, but the person from Benjamin Franklin said again, "well, I don't know what he saw, but you don't have a leak." I said that our guy saw water coming out and that he (the plumber) may not have seen where the leak was located because he didn't have me run the water. He kept insisting that no, I did not have a leak, and I said several times that we DO, and he would see it if he'd go back under and let me run the water, which he mostly ignored (as he was looking behind our bathroom access panel, which he broke). We went back and forth like this 5 or 6 times. It was pretty clear that he just was not interested in going back under the house, and I'm fairly certain that his dismissive attitude toward me was because I'm a young woman. Finally, he started packing up to leave, still saying there was no leak, and I ultimately told him that seeing as someone had SEEN water spewing out of my pipes, I was not going to pay a dime unless he went back under and let me run the water. He finally agreed. He came back up and said that I was right, I did have a leak. (No kidding.) He told me the problem was the drum trap, which needed to be taken out and replaced with up-to-date plumbing. He quoted $586, and if I agreed for him to do it in the next two days, he would roll in the $100 diagnostic fee. All in all, I was pretty irritated that I had in effect just paid a man $150 to come to my house and be rude to me. I called the company after he left, and while they were wholly unsympathetic to the idea that it is not on the up and up to charge such high hidden fees, they voided my check based on the plumber's treatment of me. I thought their estimate seemed very high, so I called another plumber with an A rating on this site, and he quoted me $200-280 for the same work. He came out the next day and did it for $280. I would not recommend using Benjamin Franklin Plumbing.

The repairman was very respectful and on time. Gave me a card and explained the services to be preformed and an estimate after he looked at the job. He found the leak and repaired it. I also explained the I had shut the water off at the shutoff but the next day pressure was in the lines indicating a bad shut off. He replace the shutoff valve and also the 2 old faucets in the laundry room. The job completed promptly and well and under the estimate price quoted when he arrived. I will use them again and highly recommend them!

[Member name removed]: Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback through Angie's List. First, I am happy that all went well and we were available to provide service on a Saturday with the correct part in stock on our service vehicle. Second, I have thoroughly reviewed the costs of the pre-approved service fees in the amount of $288.00 and compared it to the service that was provided. I found it to be priced correctly out of our Straight Forward Pricing guide. Lastly, as with any business, there are a host of expenses "behind the scenes" that go into your service call. Some of the "behind the scene" expenses include insurances, vehicles and maintenance, training, office staff, tools, marketing, fuel, taxes, utilities, employee benefits, licensing, hundreds of replacement parts on each service vehicle and the list could go on and on. So as you can see, it requires a lot of overhead and operating costs to get a Benjamin Franklin plumber to your home to provide you the best plumbing experience in the area. Showed up within an hour because it happened to work in their schedule. Two men introduced themselves, wearing uniforms and ID. Came in, quickly diagnosed the problem with the commode mounting flange coming loose and were able to shim and re-anchor the commode. Recommended I get the flooring repaired in order to fix this problem for long term. Total visit lasted under one hour. Provided good documentation and explanation of the problem recommended a local contractor to help with the floor if I wanted.

Plumber NICK showed up during the first 30 minutes of their two-hour window. Put "booties" on before entering the house, each and every time; and proceeded to investigate my two primary problems with enthusiasm and thoroughly explained the company's procedures. Prices were discussed and accepted, prior to any repairs . . . NICK did a great job, cleaned up after himself, and I was very satisfied with the quick response (call one day, faucets repaired the next); and the professionalism of NICK.

Tommy Bowen of Benjamin Franklin Plumbing is great! Tommy is very responsive. His office assistant, Kim is great at taking down all the information of your problem when you call. Tommy was able to go the next day to our Hot Springs Village home to look at a failing hot water heater, and then take photos of a failing pressure gauge, the rest of the basement floor, and email us 3 different quotes and specs on 3 different quality brands. He did everything we asked our rental agent, ReMax to do with a local plumber who could never get their act together to get over to the house. We are not asking our ReMax rental office for help again - now that we have Tommy and Angie's List :-) We chose the middle of the road hot water heater with a 10 year warranty which cost us $1,080.00 and we were so happy with the quick turnaround of service. You could use a cheaper plumber and put in cheaper equipment (and go crazy waiting and waiting for them to be available to fix your problem), but you can't beat having a company that takes pride in their service, responses quickly and professionally, and wants to make sure the job is done right, the first time. We're actually using Tommy again to replace a failing water pressure gauge this month (end of May 2014). The nice thing is Tommy spoke to us when it was already 5:30pm and his office should have been closed for the day! And Benjamin Franklin Plumbing has a 25.00 coupon for Angie's List members to use for services that are 100.00 or more! What a great plumber!

It was perfect. They came in and got it done, and there were no problems. They are prompt and they do what they are supposed to do, no re-dos. You make an appointment with them and they'll be here. They are more expensive than shade tree people, but you know they are trained and they are certified. You know that if something goes wrong, they are going to come back and fix it. You pay a premium for that kind of service. I always like to get something done a little bit cheaper, but at the same time I guess I'm paying for a good job so I can't complain. The quality of their work is excellent. Responsiveness is their trademark.

Reid showed up in the window of time given. He was professionally dressed and put on "booties" before entering the house. He checked the faucet and told me what was wrong and exactly how much it would be to fix it. He then performed a checklist that is part of their service and found that my outside water pipe leading into the house needed to be replaced and that my water heater (original one when house was built) was leaking. He gave me exact pricing to take care of the issues and we set up time the next day to complete the work. I am very impressed with the service and the professionalism of this company. I probably paid more than I would have with another company but I feel confident in Ben Franklin. I would definitely use them again and highly recommend them. I understand why they won the award from Angie's list!

I recently moved into a new home and contacted BF about a leaky toilet. The scheduler was so nice and polite, and she scheduled an appointment for later that day. The plumber arrived on time, but did not appear to know what was going on. He finally determined that the tank needed to be rebuilt and said that it would be nearly $300 to do that. Fortunately I had been to Lowes and saw a new toilet for under $200. When I shared this information I was then provided an estimate for a new toilet with installation for nearly $700. I did not have this service completed . Later I learned that the bolts needed to be tightened and the problem was solved by another plumber. Save your money and your time.

Thank you very much for your review. Even though you chose not to use our service, your opinions are still valuable to our company. While tightening a leaking plumbing part may be an easy fix for the short term, a rebuild or replacement would feature a two year warranty and provide peace of mind for many years to come. With that said, I am happy you found a plumbing professional that you trust. Tommy Bowen, Owner
