If you are buying a residential or commercial property and need to know the condition of the property, it is important to check out the credentials of the inspector you are considering. Is the inspector well trained? Does he stay current with continuing education? Does he have a passion for his work and a commitment to high ethical and professional standards? While there are some good inspectors out there, why wouldn't you want the best inspector you can find? Bill Loden is the only inspector at Insight Home Inspection and we encourage you to check out his credentials before you go any further. Here are some highlights: Nationally recognized home inspection expert and was the 2014 National President of the American Society of Home Inspectors. Bill was recently featured in an ABC Nightline Special Report on new home construction titled "New Home Heartbreak." (Nov. 2016) Other publications who have used Bill Loden as an expert include Consumer Reports, Bob Villa, New York Times, Wall Street Journal. Bill has a Bachelor of Science degree in Construction from Miss. St. Over the years he has worked extensively at both the state and national level to raise the standards for professional home inspectors. Bill currently works as a consultant with the Alabama Building Commission to review complaints against home inspectors. At the national level Bill has been heavily involved with the American Society of Home Inspectors (ASHI) since 2003 serving in various capacities including chairing the Ethics Committee, serving on the Board of Directors and serving as national President in 2014. Bill has also worked as an expert for the Examination Board of Professional Home Inspectors (EBPHI) to define and write test questions for the National Home Inspector Examination (NHIE) This is the licensing exam for the State of Alabama and 24 other states. Bottom Line: If you can find a home inspector with stronger credentials in North Alabama, hire them.
"I did research to find the most qualified inspector in the area and between his certifications, Angies' List, I chose Bill. When I called his assistant told me he was available the next morning! Scheduled the home inspection for 8:30 AM but since there were early storms rolling in he had completed the inspection before I arrived. He is extremely thorough and professional, and is a former president of the National Society of Home Inspectors. His inspection was detailed, with many pictures, and found issues that saved me from thousands of dollars in repairs. Bill noticed a structural issue with the house which the seller disputed. I had to hire a structural engineer to resolve the issue and he agreed with Bill. A load bearing beam had been removed from the house and it was structurally unsafe and I have no idea how much it would have cost me to have it resolved and then repainted to be ready to sell. Ultimately, the deal on the house did not go through due to damage that occurred after the contract was signed and I hired Bill again when my wife and I chose a new home. He is worth every penny and realtors rarely recommend him to clients because he is so thorough."

Different pest control methods exist to help mitigate an infestation. Not every technique will work with every pest, which is why speaking with a pest control expert is crucial to taming your problem. Different methods of pest removal include:
Heat treatments
Freezing treatments
Traps
Barriers
Chemical pesticides
Fumigation
Rodenticides
Mechanical devices
Repellants
The cost of pest control is $175 for the average homeowner. However, you could spend as little as $100 or as much as $500 or more, depending on the infestation size, the number of visits you need, and the pest you’re exterminating.
For example, if you need to rid your home of spiders, you’ll likely be spending between $100 and $300. However, if you have a termite problem, you can expect a bill of $230 to $2,500 or more, depending on the infestation size and damage caused.
There are specific methods for pest removal that you can DIY without hiring an expert. If you are preventing pests from making an appearance or clearing out a small infestation of harmless insects, you will likely have success on your own. However, if you’re dealing with pests that eat wood, bedbugs, or other pests that carry a disease risk, like rodents, it’s always worth it to call a pest professional to help you.
Even if you’re not immediately showing signs of pests, it’s a good idea to get into the habit of routine pest control. This should be done yearly, quarterly, bi-monthly, or monthly, depending on your location and if any signs of infestation are already present. For example, if you live by water, you might experience more pests in the spring and summer than someone who lives in a dry climate. Discuss treatment options with your pest professional to determine a suitable schedule for you and your home.
While not every infestation is preventable, there are some actions you can take to minimize the risk of running into these pests in your home. These actions include:
Keeping your home tidy. This includes vacuuming regularly, sanitizing your kitchen, storing food in airtight containers, disposing garbage regularly, and keeping your home clutter-free.
Deep clean at least twice a year. Deep cleaning neglected crevices and corners of your home can help prevent breeding grounds from forming.
Repairing your home when needed. If your home has cracks or holes, you have an open invitation for pests to come in. Remove any standing water and seal any gaps in your floors, walls, and foundation.
Cleaning up your yard. Keep shrubbery and branches well-trimmed and away from your home. Remove fallen leaves and other debris.
Be smart with storage. If you use firewood, store it away from the home (at least 20 feet away if possible) and off of the ground.
