We had been working with an architect, considering whether to remodel or start from scratch. James Wagnon, owner and founder of Historical, was very helpful during that phase with price estimates and descriptions of challenges we would face in remodeling and expanding, which convinced us appropriately that we would be better off replacing the old cabin. Everyone agreed, including the architect, once James explained all the issues. The architect’s designs were significantly beyond our price range, however, so we put the project on hold. James stayed in touch with us and told us he thought he could deliver most of what we wanted within our price range, so we started working on plans with him. He produced new plans himself which required many long conversations. He was extremely patient as we worked up all the details of the new house, also offering great advice based on his experience. He wouldn’t start work, and didn’t charge anything for all of his time on the front end, until we had negotiated a firm price on the completed house which could only be changed through a well organized and transparent change order process. Once the contract was settled, James immediately started work and delivered us a beautiful new house with 3000 square feet of heated and cooled space over 4500 feet of space under roof in 7 1/2 months. He was totally hands on, always available to discuss issues, and made changes as necessary; in every case, he was able to tell us the cost in time and money of any change we contemplated to the original plan. We really enjoyed working with James and were impressed at every turn by his organization, his work ethic, and his integrity. My wife’s only complaint about James was that he was so committed to his schedule of completion, which he met, that she felt pressure from him to meet with designers to pick out colors, cabinets, hardware, etc. He has also been thorough and committed to resolving all punch list items, which are inevitable in a project of this size. We recommend James absolutely without qualification for any job of any size he is willing to take on.

James (Historical Home Crafters) has built two houses for us (one in 1996 and one in 2019). We learned during the first construction project that James is professional, respectful, and takes pride in his work. Choosing him to build our new home was based on the experience we had the first time. His construction knowledge and experience combined with his integrity takes a lot of the stress out of building a new home. We highly recommend Historical Home Crafters.

James Wagnon was fantastic to deal with. We weren't sure what we wanted but he walked us through the whole process. They were a one-stop shop (drawings - completion), which was very helpful. They also did an incredible job on our landscaping! We highly recommend them! The designer was very thorough and knew her stuff. It was great working with everyone! Top class organization for sure. Give them a call if you're looking to build in this area.

The process was awesome. He let us know what decisions needed to be made by when and gave us all the resources we needed to make wise decisions about EVERY aspect of our home. The man even went and watched the rain on three different occasions to check the grade of our land before making the first dig!! If you want attention to detail and a good steward of your money, this is the man and company for you!!!!!!! We closed with equity in our beautiful home.

His people are very neat and timely. As you can see from photos the before and after of kitchen, as well as the beautiful garage.
Description of Work: James Wagnon built our house 19 years ago. We have loved our home, so when we decided to add a detached garage 19 years later we thought he'd be the guy to hire. Our garage is beautiful and looks like it has always been part of our house. James also has a flair for landscape and after 19 years our landscape became very overgrown. He replaced much of our landscape which made our house look new again. Since we were on a roll we decided our kitchen needed a facelift. James transformed our kitchen into a timeless beauty. Our entire kitchen was done in under 3 weeks. My husband and I highly recommend him for building or renovating.

This is the second project we had Historical Homecrafters do for us. Just like the first time, James the owner of Historical Homecrafters did a great job. Very professional and great quality of work. He did what he said he would do when he said he would do it. Provided great suggestions to customize the outcome. He had all subs lined up and made sure they knew exactly what was expected. Water drainage was a huge concern due to location of building. James took extra efforts to ensure the drainage was handled. You always have things come up when building, but it's how the contractor handles it that separates them from others. We had an excellent experience and would recommend to anyone.
Description of Work: Built craftsman style 14x24 workshop, handled water drainage, underground utilities, poured driveway and landscaped

James proved to live up to his reputation, being both knowledgable and capable in all aspects of site preparations, home and property design, as well as things such as energy management and construction techniques, as well as the financial and manpower management aspects of the project. Further, he always kept us well informed of the status and progress of the work.
Description of Work: We contacted Historical Homecrafters to help us build a new family home on vacant property that we owned. We had no previous experience with James Wagnon, the principal of this company, but we soon found out that he was a very astute, professional person. Everyone that we came in contact with as we proceeded on the project , from bankers to real estate professionals, to owners of homes that James had built, spoke highly of him.

He was really nice and informative. He has taken in the whole concept of the entire city that we were in and what value the house could actually hold vs. what we needed. He did a great job of giving me other ideas about what we could do and what we couldn't do. It was a 1955 house and he has taken into consideration the historical preservation aspect of the house as well. He gave me a lot of information even about the yard work as well. However, I think our ideas of what we could do to the home were a little off. He was in the $200,000 range, whereas a second opinion we got was in the $75,000 range.

James is very meticulous in planning and execution. He is well versed in both structural and landscape architecture, and has spent years studying the art of science involved in creating classic homesites. James worked well with us, and was very sensitive to our input and direction. He completed each phase on time. He submitted a comprehensive written estimate and adjusted it only with our approval. The overall project was completed significantly under budget. The building has structural amenities that are above standard and provide protection from water damage. James also suggested specific insulation specs which will allow us to store relatively delicate articles in the building with no A/C or heat. He maximized the plan to allow for storage which was our main goal. James was onsite at the beginning of each phase, and personally met with sub-contractors to ensure their understanding of the process. He has established strong relationships with contractors of all disciplines. We did have one incident with a brick mason who did not complete the work to our satisfaction. James hired another mason to correct the problem and absorbed the extra costs.
Description of Work: We wanted to add a detached garage with storage rooms and re-landscape our back yard. James spent the necessary time to understand our needs and preferences. He designed a garage that met all of our storage and work requirements while adding to the value of the homesite. He also re-designed the lawn so that all of the landscape compliments the overall property. James sub-contracted with individual companies to complete the work, but oversaw in detail the entire process.

Very professional and thorough with regards to the design process and implementation of the design. Great suggestions and options provided to allow my wife and I the luxury of choosing the best plan for what we had in mind. Upon completion of the job, all changes requested by us were handled very well and without having to wait.
Description of Work: Refinished basement, to include turning a 4th bay in the garage into an office/entertainment room. Also created a mud area/hallway from the entrance to the basement. Both the office and hallway were finished with custom built-ins (locker-type area for coats, shoes, etc. and entertainment center). Created a guest bedroom and bathroom as well. Again, custom built-ins were installed in the bedroom (bookshelves). Carpeted staircase was redone to match hardwood flooring on the main level.

James was a complete professional. He met with us for about 2 months on a weekly basis until we were comfortable with all of the details of the home, the budget, etc. He got to work immediately. He is very creative and takes pride in his work. He managed all subcontractors, and any little detail we were not 100% pleased with, he had it corrected. He is very detail oriented. Nothing gets past him. We looked through lots of his open houses for about 5 years before we could afford to build and knew we wanted him to build our home when the time came. The thing we are most impressed with is the quality and how structurally sound his homes are. Our home is an Energy Star home, and we anticipate our energy bills to be minimal as a result. Our third party home inspector commented that "You don't see houses built like this much anymore." We would highly recommend this company to anyone looking to build a home, do a remodeling or landscaping project or to improve the energy efficiency of their current home. We plan to use him again as we add to our landscaping and when we get ready to finish our basement.
Description of Work: We had a custom home built. James completely designed the home from scratch after meeting with us several times and getting an idea of what we were looking for. He created house plans, recommended the best lot for our home, coordinated and oversaw the entire building project, and designed a fabulous landscaping plan.

My experience with Historical Home Crafters was excellent. James was on site continuously overseeing his bricklayers, carpenters and painters. All workers were professional and on-time Work quality was excellent with no need for follow-up corrections. All brick, paint and ornate molding were matched perfectly I had concerns that the sheetrock joints (from the added framing and sheetrock used to decrease the size of the opening where french doors would be hung) would show, but I cannot see the joints at all. I was very pleased with craftsmanship. HHC actually corrected some of the old joints in our foyer and now they look much better than before. I have worked with many contractors and this was by far my best experience.
Description of Work: Corrected brick steps leading to front door stoop. Steps had severly separated from the stoop. Original builder (not HHC) did not place the steps on solid footings, nor did they connect them to the stoop. HHC removed original brick steps, and a portion of the sidewalk. They Added rebar that securely connected the new footing and sidewalk to the stoop. This ensured the brick steps would not settle over time. HHC also rebuilt the brick steps to the stoop. Entire sidewalk was pressure washed to better blend old and new concrete. Replaced floor kickboard, window and door trim due to minor termite damage. HHC removed, replaced and painted sheetrock in areas near to damage. HHC made sure no there was no structural damage. Home original had a ~80 inch opening (no doors) from foyer to a home office. HHC enclosed a portion of the opening and added two french doors. HHC added the framing, sheetrock and matched all ornate molding around and above the opening. Two 30 inch french doors were added. 4. Historical Home Crafters painted all trim, sheetrock and french doors to match existing construction

The person that came out was very nice. He did not charge me for the estimate. He was very knowledgeable about the building as well as the renovation methods. He was very upfront and very straight forward about the pricing as it was a renovation job. It was as if he meant that they would love to take my money but since, it was more of a structural work my budget would not cover that. I appreciated that. He was very nice in terms of his responsiveness. He was right on time. I would absolutely use them again in the future. If I was going to build then I am pretty sure that I would use them. I would use them if I decide to do a renovation. I was very impressed with the person that came out.
