This contractor managed to turn a 2 week project into nearly a 12 week project. He doesn't communicate well - I never knew when his workmen would be here, or what they were suppose to do because he never informed me. Initially, the project began well... but went down hill. He shortcuts things, substitutes lesser quality items for the things he promises to install when he can. There were a number of items I was unhappy with and at first he choose not to listen. We had our attorney write him a letter explaining that we were going to withhold approximately 1/3 of his payment so we could find another contractor to fix the issues. When we initially met with the contractor his price was too high, so he agreed to come off that price $2000 since we had a concrete floor that we just wanted painted - and no flooring needed. He had a talk with our attorney where he told him that he had come down on his price $2,000 and told me that the quality were not be good and I said that was OK. That isn't even a good lie! Eventually he admitted in writing (after this all correspondence was by email and included our attorney getting a copy) that he had taken the flooring out. After several weeks of negotiation, he agreed to return and fix the items we were unhappy with. I know he wouldn't have done that if we had not withheld that money. He has since fixed the items and we have paid him.... but we will never call him for another job. He may have saved himself a little money on costs.... but he surely lost a customer and my word of mouth will not gain him any new ones!
