Guyette Roofing & Construction is family owned, been in business since 1982, and a member of the BBB. We are also fully licensed and insured.
A full service roofing company located in downtown Montgomery, Guyette Roofing & Construction has served the Montgomery area for over 30 years. We have grown from a one-man woodworking operation in a Montgomery garage to a full scale roofing company capable of doing the largest residential and commercial jobs. Owner, Bill Guyette, runs the company with his two sons, Billy and Jonathan.
With a relentless commitment to customer service, the lifeblood of our business is quality craftsmanship and long term relationships.
They do satisfactory work, when they decide to show up...if they decide to return your call. They usually return your calls after you call them several times, if they deem the job worthy. They seem more interested in major repairs, especially if an insurance claim is possible.

We have worked four (4) times for this owner: 7/26/11 - Corrected roof leaks into master bedroom (Cost, $120.00) 9/9/11 - Corrected 2nd roof leak (Cost, $60.00) 8/2/12 - Replaced 3 deteriorated pipe collars, sealed, painted to match roof (Cost, $150.00) 10/6/12- Stabilized framing under power vent to reduce vibration (Cost, $125.00) After our fourth visit, we recommended replacing the roof due to age deterioration and hail damage. The month of July, 2013 brought record rainfall to Montgomery, ending with a windstorm doing major damage to the city's south side. As a result, we received over 100 calls, requesting assistance. We did the best we could to meet as many requests as possible, and perform quality repair work. Unfortunately, we were not able to get to everyone who called. We are grateful for the four (4) opportunities we had to work for this customer, and regret the loss of their business.

I called and spoke with the lady who answered. Told her I had a problem with my roof leaking (flat roof). That was the first part of the week, she said someone would call me by the end of the week. No one called. So on the following Monday I called back and got an answering machine. I once again left my name and number and stated my problem again. No one called. I don't know how this company gets all thier high ratings when they won't even talk with a potential customer. If they had called and said we don't fix that type of roof, or were too busy to help you now I would understand. But no callback is unforgivable.

Our roof was in need of repair. This was not an insurance claim. Because this was such an important job, we joined Angie's List to ensure we hired the best company for the job. At that time, Guyette Contracting had several positive reviews. The eaves of the house were beginning to lean. Deck boards had begun to pop up through the shingles. We wanted to knock down the chimneys as all fireplaces had been closed several years before. This was an older home and we needed someone with the knowledge and expertise to address our concerns. We asked if he needed to go into the attic and address anything we may not be aware of and he said no, that would not be necessary. We were given an estimate, including removing old shingles (there was one layer), using the existing decking when possible, replacing any broken boards, and adding 1/2and quot; OSB decking over the existing decking. The estimate included knocking down all chimneys, shoring up (bracing to support the sagging eaves), painting, reinforcing all barge rafters around the entire perimeter, and replacing the shingles with architectural shingles. We asked if the supports would be painted and he said yes, his carpenter would paint the supports to match the house. Mr. Guyette was professional, reacted promptly, and appeared very knowledgeable. He has two sons that work with him. We felt good we were hiring someone that had so many favorable reviews. This job was not a normal roof replacement. The job: A few pieces of 1 x 6 decking on the eaves were replaced instead of shoring up the entire perimeter as written on the contract. When I called Mr. Guyette about this, he said they determined shoring up (support bracing) was not needed. The contract stated $1250 to have the whole perimeter shored up. The contract was not adjusted even though the entire perimeter was not shored up. When surveying the job in progress, the valleys were very lumpy. This was with the new decking in place. After addressing it with the sons, they said it would level out when they completed the roofing. Three of the four valleys had dips and were not smooth. This was addressed with Mr. Guyette at the completion of the job. He saw no problem with valleys that dip. He suggested the roof be braced from the attic to smooth out the valleys. We went into the attic and one of the valley beams had been split during the job. This should have been addressed before the new shingles were put on. We were quoted an additional charge to go into the attic and brace the roof from the inside. The pressure placed against the roof in the attic caused ceiling damage in one of the rooms below. In this room, the ceiling actually was pressed against the crown molding on the side of the room where the attic bracing was placed. The valleys still had dips and we were out an additional $200. After four months, in that same room, the paint began to peel and the wall seemed to be cracking. When we called Mr. Guyette, he looked at the wall and ceiling and said he would correct the ceiling and paint the wall in and quot;good faithand quot; but he did not believe his crew had caused the damage. He said the paint was peeling, but could not say the damage was from the bracing, causing the wall to crack. He suggested moisture. Was the moisture from the roof leaking? Mr. Guyette said no. That was out last conversation with Mr. Guyette directly. He did not talk with us anymore. All conversations after that were with the crew member that came to remove the bracing and correct the ceiling/wall. He told us he removed the bracing directly over the damaged ceiling. Later, he said he did not remove any bracing. During this repair, the one doing the repair created a hole in the ceiling. This cost us an additional $175. Guyette Contracting said we had prior damage in the attic that caused the hole his crewman made in the ceiling. Had the bracing not been put over the ceiling, there would have been no ceiling damage to repair. The crew was very courteous and they cleaned up everything the first time. When they installed the bracing in the attic, the cleanup was not as thorough. I understand how rafters can possibly split with the weight of several people carrying shingles on the roof, but address those problems before you put on the new shingles. There are still dips in the valleys where debris and water can and will collect. Guyette's Contracting gives a 5 year workmanship warranty. Since it cost us additional money each time we brought up a concern, we hesitate to call with other issues. We did have a different contracting company come by to get a professional opinion to see if our expectations were too high. That contractor was appalled that any reputable company would say the valleys were acceptable. Guyette's Contracting has a business license from the county. They are not licensed with the Home Builder Licensure Board or the Board of Contractors. Total cost of our job was $9175 and our new roof with new decking has uneven valleys and was not shored up as stated on the contract. Mr. Guyette said we misunderstood about the shoring up. No, the misunderstanding was trusting the job would be completed as stated on the contract. Mr. Guyette said the new roof looks much better. Yes, as previously stated, the roof was in need of attention. Any new roofing would look better. The valleys were smooth before the roof was replaced. February 25, 2014 Update The rafters are now separating from the the valley beams and the roof is succumbing under the weight of the OSB decking and shingles. After consulting with a credible contractor, the only way to accurately correct this now is to remove the shingles and decking. It will cost us thousands of dollars to correct what should have been addressed before the new roof was installed. A Structural Engineer has assessed the house and the bracing that was installed is inadequate. One of the valley beams is broken and bracing a broken valley beam is not structurally sound. It should have been replaced at the time the new roof was installed as it was easily accessible before new decking was placed over it. By the time we correct this roof, including the $9175 we have already paid to Guyette’s Contracting, we could have put an entire addition on our house. I do not recommend them for any job based on our experience with this company.

Guyette's did an excellent job, from the estimate to the end of the job being done. The prise was a little higher than I would like. However, the work would have costed about the same if another company had done the job. I got industrial grade roofing and am very satisfied with it. The work was completed much quicker than I thought it would and all trash and old roofing materials were removed. They had enough people working and enough equipment to do a fast and thorough job. I am very satisfied that I used Guyette's and if I had to do it over, I would use Guyette's again. I saw people roofing the house next door to me and it is no where near the quality that Guyette's did on my house. Guyette did a great job and you get what you pay for.
Description of Work: Called to get an estimate on my roof. Guyette did an estimate in a timely manner. I picked out the roofing tile I wanted and set up a date to get the roof replaced. There was some eve work to be done. Some wood trim had to be replaced. Guyette came out as scheduled on 5/11/12 and did an excellent job. They cleaned the mess up and hauled off the used materials. The roof was completed fairly quick. About 5 to 6 hours in all. I did not do this survey right after the work was done because I am quite busy with work and just did not take the time to do the survey till now.

From the time of the original estimate until cleanup was completed we were happy with the decision to hire Guyette Contracting. He worked around our vacation plans. The right materials arrived on time (one day before the roofing), and the work was performed as promised, for the price agreed upon.
Description of Work: Mr.Guyette's estimate for re-shingling and repairing a roof came in about $1000 less than the other contractor who looked at the job, and included a service that I had not expected, namely painting a ceiling that had been stained by the leak. The paint job was done without a mess, and architectural shingles were thrown in as well, though I had not expected to ask for them. Two useless vents were removed and hauled away. The workers, about a dozen of them, arrived at 6:30 and work was done by about noon, as promised. Work was supervised by Mr. Guyette's sons. We were welcome to observe and ask questions. All the workmen were courteous, and nothing was borrowed from us, nor did anything turn up missing, as has been our experience in the past. The roof looks good, the leak has been fixed (so far) and I am confident that problems will be tended to if they recur. The service was friendly and professional and I am happy to recommend this contractor to anyone needing a roof. It was not the cheapest job that I could have asked for, nor the most expensive. I feel confident that I got my money's worth.

Guyette's Contracting has got to be the best company we have dealt with! We called for an estimate in June - got several other estimates to be prudent. They were $1600 less than the other estimates, and those didnt include the upgrade shingles or the ridge venting system. Called them on Thursday, Sept. 13th to give the go-ahead - didnt speak to Mr. Guyette until Friday morning. Materials were delivered Friday afternoon. The forecast for Monday, the 17th, was for rain, so we were a little worried. They arrived at about 7:30 and by 9am, they had completely removed all the old roofing! They completed the roof and all the accompanying painting and cleanup by about 1:30 - talk about FAST! The rain started not 20 minutes after they left! We didnt have ONE nail or ONE piece of building material to pick up in our yard when they completed cleanup! We are absolutely thrilled with our new roof! It looks great, the architectural shingles really step up the curb appeal. They give a 5 year labor warranty, which I hope we never have to use. My husband is unable to do heavy maintenance due to a stroke, so I hope we can develop a relationship with Guyette's Contracting to do other and quot;honey doand quot; projects as we need them. Again, TOTALLY HAPPY with Mr. Guyette and both of his sons. They are a credit to the Montgomery Area!!

They worked pretty well. I was not entirely sold on the price; I think it was high. They had the job done within four or five days and the people are pretty good; so is the work. Sometimes it is a little hard to get hold of them but they are busy. My advice to others would be to do your research ahead of time. I am pretty satisfied with what they did.

Overall it went well. Initial contact took some time as the office is always manned. Techs who preformed work both times were very courteous and did not need to access main house so no mess was created. I would use the company again!
Description of Work: Leaks at chimney of fireplace are common. Guyette sent 2 technicians who sealed the area promptly. Also common is the need to test the seal and at the first rain (3 weels later). While most of the area was dry, we found that one leak had not been contained. Guyette sent their techs back immediately and we have had no problems since.

I had contacted Guyette's Contracting, LLC, previously about another matter and found out that his company also does painting. Mr. Guyette came out and gave me an estimate. He was very thorough in his observations of what would be required (he really took his time). He was very courteous and professional. I got two additional estimates but overall he gave the best price. The job went very well. Mr. Guyette's painting crew showed up on time and worked all day painting the house exterior and the garage (on a really sweltering day I might add). I was kept apprised of the progress and of any problems. The whole job took about one and a half days (it rained intermittenly that week - which slowed progress). Mr. Guyette's staff was very diligent and thorough. Mr. Guyette is very responsive and was available when I called him with questions. The house looks fantastic! I am very happy with the experience.
Description of Work: The exterior of my house and interior/exterior of my garage were painted. The surfaces were treated and cleaned of mildew and algae. Several seams and joints were re-caulked. The house exterior and garage were then painted (including the gutters).

So they came back (within a month after the work was done on 03/06/12), put a bit of tar on the flat part of the roof, but it leaked again when it rained a couple weeks later. -- So they came back a second time, adding additional rubberized roll roofing where it probably was leaking. (Couldn't say exactly where the water was coming in from.) The main problem (as I see it) is that the roofing job included redecking the gables (most of the roof) but did NOT include redecking of the flat parts (about 16x20' area). Mr Guyette later said I probably and quot;would have had a big messand quot; if they had redecked it b/c it (the wood and stuff) would likely fall into the den when they started removing the old decking and roofing. The ceiling in the den has leaked for as long as I've lived here (15 yrs - the house was built in 1907). He said he would and quot;guaranteeand quot; there would be no leaks after they finished the job. After the roofing job was done and after it continued leaking, we discussed why it was leaking and he said that he had told me (when making the contract) that he was not going to redeck it. I don't remember him saying that and his and quot;contractand quot; was unreadable (bad handwriting), so don't know if it says that or not. After some lengthy discussions over a few weeks (April and May), he said one way to stop the leak was to ADD A ROOF over the existing roof, to make it quit leaking; his estimate was $2,950. I told him I didn't think I should have to pay more to get it fixed when it should be guaranteed (as he had said). Also, I said the failure to redeck was (probably) the reason it continues to leak. After a couple of visits and a few emails (over several weeks-May/June), he sent me an email and said that and quot;We tried, but it looks like we're not going to be able to make you happy. and quot; He said he was sending back 1/3 of the cost of the roof and and quot; that will end our liability in the matter.and quot; -- Somehow I thought a and quot;contractand quot; couldn't be broken just because someone decides that he doesn't want to bother with (pay for) the and quot;liabilityand quot; of a leak. Our major conflict was that I would not agree to pay him more to fix what should have been fixed when he first roofed it, and the problem was caused by HIS DECISION to not re-deck the flat part. He never admitted that HIS DECISION was wrong, just said and quot;we're not going to be able to make you happyand quot;. I WOULD BE and quot;HAPPYand quot; IF THE NEW ROOF DIDN'T LEAK AND THAT HIS and quot;GUARANTEEand quot; ACTUALLY MEANT THAT HE and quot;GUARANTEEDand quot; HIS WORK! I was generally happy with the gabled part of the roof, although they also failed to redeck the front porch roof (which is NOT flat). I do NOT like that they didn't do a very good job in collecting nails and tacks. They used a magnet sweeper, but I keep finding roofing nails in the shrubs, near the house, out in the yard, etc. The inside work: He had calculated a cost of $400 to fix the ceiling in the bedroom and to repaint the ceiling. This was a and quot;bead boardand quot; (original, 1907) wood ceiling. Mr Guyette had taken a sample of the bead board and quot;so we can get some cut like itand quot;, so it would match the original board. -- The day they started the work, he said they'd found the same type of bead-board. Only AFTERWARDS did I notice that the new boards were more narrow than the original, so it doesn't match like he said they would do by getting some cut to match. Also, when the carpenter had cut the hole in the ceiling (where water had been leaking in) and he was putting the new boards back in, he said and quot; You know, you really didn't need to replace all this. You could have just washed the ceiling and repainted. The boards are not rotten.and quot; I was just very surprised because Mr Guyette had said it needed to be replaced. I never even considered that it wasn't rotted since it had been leaking for several months. So I feel that most of that $400 could have been saved if Mr Guyette had made the suggestion to just clean it. Also, it would not now be a patched-up hole with boards that don't quite match what's there. CARPORT ROOF -- I had a second job done (in April) redecking and reroofing the flat-roofed carport (about 20x24). This was $1,400 (a bit high I think). The main complaint was that they barely had enough material to take care of the job. About 1/2 of the decking was replaced (just where it had leaked) but Mr Guyette had not tagged a couple of the damaged 4x8s, so these weren't counted as and quot;to be replacedand quot;. They just happened to have a and quot;couple extraand quot; on the truck or they would not have had enough to redeck it. -- I also had to supply a 2x4 treated board to replace one that was rotted because the boards they had were untreated 1x4s (not brought for this job, just happened to have them on the truck). -- Also, at the end of the job, they did NOT sweep for nails. I have collected several handfuls of roofing nails, found lying around the carport plus several (6 to 8) nails that must have fallen out of their truck, lying right next to the driveway. Not happy with this rather unprofessional job. I would not recommend this company.
Description of Work: I contracted to have a new roof put on to repair tornado damage, plus repair ceilings (BR/Den) where the roof was leaking. Guyette's Contracting came, removed the previous roofing and put on a new roof with new decking (at least that's what I thought they did). But at the end of the roofing job, the ceiling in the den was still leaking. Their "contract" said he guaranteed the roof for 5 years.

Response from Guyette Roofing & Construction
When I arrived to prepare an estimate for this roof, customer informed me that she was unemployed and would only have what the insurance provided to pay for the repairs. Realizing that insurance in this case would only cover wind and hail damage (not framing over a flat roof to make it sloped), I prepared the estimate and explained in detail what would be done. The house was leaking in two places, one for over 15 years. We removed five (5) layers of old roofing on the sloped areas of the house, including the original cedar shake shingles. Two (2) layers were taken off the flat area until we could get a good substrate for our rubberized asphalt cap sheet to adhere to. The waste material filled three (3) dumptrucks. We spent a lot of time on the ground with our nail magnets, but with 5 layers of roofing you have 5X as many nails, you may miss some. The customer received a FREE upgrade to architectural shingles on the sloped portions of the roof. It rained a couple of days after the roof was completed. The customer reported that she had a leak in her den, under the flat portion of roof. The other problem area, under a slope, was O.K. We returned within a day or two and added more roof cement to all the seams. That didn't stop all the leak so we added another layer of rubberized roofing over the lowest area. We were prepared to stay with the problem until it was fixed, but the customer began talking about building a sloped roof over the flat area. Together with my carpenter, we visited the customer to discuss re-framing the roof, and gave her an estimate for additional materials and labor. On this point we could not agree, and fell into a period of "analysis paralysis", exchanging approximately 15 e-mails as to how exactly it should be built -- time that we could have spent on the flat roof. Finally, in order to move forward, I calculated the coverage area of the flat roof to one-third of the overall area, then sent the customer a letter and $2,549.76 check (one-third of the original contract amount) offering her the option of hiring someone to address that part of the roof anyway she wishes. We felt that was the honorable thing to do. The customer cashed the check, meaning she takes responsibility for the flat roof. Our warranty will still apply to the remainder of the roof.

I noticed water trickling around a vent pipe in my attic during a rain storm. I also noticed water leaking around an area near some soffits over my garage that I had replaced the day before. I looked at the reviews on Angie's list and Mr. Guyette's business got very favorable ratings. I called his office and the receptionist said he would get back with me either that day or the next. After I returned home that evening from work he was already parked by the curb and apparently had been in the process of leaving a note on my door. I got his attention and we talked. I showed him the issues and he said they could effect repairs that week. In fact his crew came out the next afternoon and got everything patched up. Wow! what great service! Mr. Guyette was very professional and reassuring. He took care of the problem expeditiously. He also provided me with an estimate for a new roof (which I will probably replace in the near future). I would definitely use him again.
Description of Work: I had a roof leak around a vent pipe and another leak in the roof over my garage. Mr. Guyette and his staff provided repairs.

Mr Guyette responded the day after I left my question. He came out that afternoon and gave me an estimate to remove my old shutters and install the new ones I had purchased. Two days later the work was performed quickly and professionally.

Mr Guyette came to do an estimate and was supposed to email me results and give the estimate to another person and I never heard from him again and neither did the other person.

Response from Guyette Roofing & Construction
What the owner failed to mention before I drove up to Clanton to do the estimate was that the roof had four (4) layers, the bottom of which was asbestos tiles -- a hazardous substance regulated by the EPA. In addition, the customer, who was a heavy smoker, was very worried that if she inhaled any dust particles dislodged by the roof operation, whe could contract mesothelioma, a deadly disease to which smokers (more so than non-smokers) are susceptible to when coming into contact with asbestos. We apologize, but we did not want that liablilty hanging over our heads.

Mr. Guyette promptly gave a quotation. His crew actually did the work sooner than I originally thought they would, and they brought a large crew. The job was done within 4 hours. Cleanup was thorough, and the finished roof looks great.
Description of Work: Replaced roof on house.

We called before their office opened in the morning and left a message, and they called us back about 10 minutes later. They were prompt and professional. The put a temporary patch on the roof and came back a few days later to put a permanent repair on the roof. The roof work was done quickly, and we have not had another problem. They came back a few days later and repaired the interior damage. Again, the were efficient and professional. After the paint dried, we weren’t happy with the job that was done because you could see streaks and places where the plaster had not be covered by the paint. They came back and inspected the job and agreed to send someone back to do it again. The second time looked much better. I appreciated that they were willing to do the job right, and they did not ask for any payment until we were happy with the job they did.
Description of Work: Repair a small leak in the roof, repair and paint damaged drywall.
