The results are beautiful, and exactly as we'd hoped. The detailed work is apparent and worth the price. The glass was sub-contracted and paid separately, but I included that in the noted overall price because it is part of the piece. Also, installation was separate, done by our own contractor, so is not included in the overall price, nor in this rating. The only negative, and it was minor, was the time involved. We knew up front that the Reads were going to be out of the country for two weeks during the building time, but even so it took longer than they'd anticipated. However, the care taken and attention to detail was worth the wait. They consulted with us on the stain colors, showing us examples of applied stain on the type wood to be used. It needs to be pointed out that this is not plywood, but furniture quality maple and oak. Absolutely gorgeous work!
Description of Work: Built custom sized and designed glass-doored hanging cabinet and a wall shelf for separate rooms. These are to hold and display collectibles. These were to be furniture quality, stained to match other furniture in the rooms. Glass on the cabinet doors was to be beveled.

I live in a house that is more than one hundred years old and does not have linen closets. I decided to order two custom-made cedar hope chests that could be used as storage for linens and wool clothing (I used to live in the north east); and then at a later date these chests could be given as gifts to my great nieces. The owners of Oakleigh Custom Woodworks, LLC, were the consumate professionals. We talked about what it was that I needed and would like. I then toured their facilities and was shown many samples of their work including other hope chests. We settled on a design. They then talked with me about choices for a wood stain and gave me several samples to take home and put next to the furniture so that I could wisely select what stains to use. The owners provided me with updates on the project and we agreed on a mutually convenient delivery time. I could not have been more pleased than I was with the finished products. The chests were exactly what I had hoped for and these did not disappoint. This company was very timely, very communicative, had excellent workmanship, and gave great attention to detail. The hope chests they designed and produced were superior to anything I could have purchased pre-made in a store. I highly recommend their work.

I hired them March 2012 to hired them March 2012 and still don't have kitchen after paying $15,500. The contract stated they would be completed in 6-8 weeks. They do a lot of blaming, have many excuses, and put stuff back on me. Cabinets don't fit; mistake with stove placement. These aren't custom cabinets; they don't install or put on cabinet doors. I was quoted an additional $2000 from their and quot;installerand quot; which included putting put on face frames, cabinet doors, and correcting mistakes. I've had to find another cabinet maker to complete job. They demand 1/2 money upfront for materials which was $7500. (I don't think my cabinet materials could have cost more than $1500 for materials). They demand increments depending on job completion and nothing was completed when they collected payment. The kitchen isn't what I asked for, or the plans in the contract. and still don't have kitchen after paying $15,500. They do a lot of blaming, have many excuses, and put stuff back on me. Response from Oakleigh Custom Woodworks LLC
It is always a shame when customers are dissatisfied. We take customer complaints very seriously; fortunately, they are a very rare occurrence. It is important to understand the context in which this project lives. The complainant bought a very run down property that needed a complete gut down to the studs rehabilitation. As we live near the property, we have monitored progress so the cabinets could be installed near to completion, thereby avoiding the possibility of damage by other trades. For this reason, cabinets are typically one of the last items to be installed. Both the member comments section and the resolution make assertions that are inaccurate, misleading or false. The table below disaggregates each particular comment with our response. When cabinets are installed in a 100 year-old house without square walls the cabinets need to be adjusted. We allow extra width where appropriate for scribing to walls. Extra length for the uneven floor. The installer has nearly completed the work and they look very nice. Mistake with stove placement We were not responsible for the mistake with stove placement, but the stove is where it should be according to the plans, We offered to move the outlet to avoid an argument even though we don’t believe it’s our responsibility. Webster’s definition of custom made is, “Built to individual specifications” We do not make standard size cabinets or have a line of ready-make products. Our cabinet sizes are dictated by the space available, the owner’s choice of appliances, and the “look” desired by the owner. I was quoted an additional $2000 from their “installer” which included putting put on face frames, cabinet doors, & correcting mistakes. Our independent installer did quote $2,000 for the install. But it was not for attaching face frames, doors or correcting mistakes. they don’t install or put on cabinet doors We are a manufacturer and our business license doesn’t permit us to install. This was made clear in the contract. We, of course, install doors as we have done here. Member statement: "I’ve had to find another cabinet maker to complete job." This is simply incorrect. The owner did, however, select their own installer whom we have been working with. They demand ½ money upfront for materials which was $7500. (I don’t think my cabinet materials could have cost more than $1500 for materials). It is pretty much standard in the cabinet industry to get a 50% deposit. The estimate of our bill of materials is wrong and irrelevant. We used the materials that we stipulated in the contract. We used top of the line Blum hardware (soft close, under mount slides). We built fully enclosed cabinets of ¾ inch plywood that exceed many of today’s cabinets. Our bill of materials is the same as any other cabinet maker because we all source from the same suppliers. Why is the owner’s ill-informed estimate of the bill of materials relevant? Member statement: "They demand increments depending on job completion & nothing was completed when they collected payment." The contract outlines progress payments. The kitchen conforms to the plans that the owner signed. Member statement: "I’ve had to hire someone to put on the remaining face frames; cabinet doors; knobs & pulls; & correct whatever is missing/ mistakes." This statement is untrue. We installed the face frames and cabinet doors. We have an email from the owner confirming the knobs and pulls are on back-order. We have offered to install them when they arrive. I can not stress enough that time is critical and expensive, and no matter what excuse Oakleigh Custom Woodwork’s has, 8 months is too long to wait for cabinets that were promised in 6 weeks The original timeline was based on a faster construction schedule. The cabinets were ready in August but we had to store them for two months before the owner’s contractor picked them up. Presently they are installed on a property that requires further work and that cannot legally be occupied because it lacks the requisite inspections and certificate of occupancy. The cabinet situation is now delaying other aspects of the project & costing me more money This is not correct. Cabinet installation cannot by definition be holding up any of the remaining work to be done on the property. Other Comments 1. We signed a contract in March that carefully specified the method of construction, the materials to be used and the finish to be applied. We further agreed that we would await delivery of the appliances before starting work. The property was uninhabitable with much work to be done so timing was not critical. The owner was absent in Mississippi for much of the working week. 2. The contract also had a plan showing the placement and size of each cabinet that the owner signed. The kitchen conforms, within agreed and specified tolerances, to the signed plans. 3. We took delivery of the appliances and stored them free of charge from early May to July when the owner collected them and put them in their own storage unit. 4. The owner maintains that the cabinets are not custom, yet they conform, in every respect to the contract we signed. 5. In general, we like to give customers a little more than the contract so we custom fabricated decorative legs for all the cabinets. We made solid maple drawers with dovetail joinery rather than plywood drawers as the contract stipulated. We also made decorative frame and panel sides for the cabinets as opposed to plain plywood. 6. We completed the kitchen cabinets in August and sought final payment. The owner’s representative inspected the cabinets at our location and the final payment was made. The owner’s contractor eventually picked them up and took them to the property in October. We stored the cabinets for 2 months free of charge. 7. The owner’s contractor complained about the quality of the finish on some edges, And one cabinet was too large, which was our mistake and we agreed to remake it once he had established the exact size. 8. Because of the complaints about the finish, we elected to completely refinish the cabinets rather than make repairs. It wasn’t strictly necessary, but we wanted the owner to have the best quality that we could do. In November, we brought the entire kitchen, less carcasses to our workshop for refinishing. We asked the owner’s contractor for a timetable and he indicated that there was no hurry as there was still much work to be completed. 9. In December, we met with the owner and agreed to a timetable to return the cabinets. Shortly thereafter, without notice, the owner asked for the cabinets. We refused as they were in process of being refinished as per our previous meeting. 10. We stopped all other work to completely refinish the face frames, panel returns and legs so that the cabinets could be installed leaving the doors and drawers to be attached in the New Year. This included sanding two primer coats and two topcoats. We also used top of the line finish from ML Campbell. 11. On December 21st we installed the face frames and attached the legs and put the cabinets in their approximate location ready for install. In the comments, the member and the resolution she says that we didn’t attach the face frames after having seen them installed and expressed satisfaction with the new finish. 12. It is true that we don’t install cabinets because our business license does not encompass that. We made that plain in the contract and said that we could recommend a licensed contractor if they wished. But it would be a third party arrangement. So the comment about the installer’s price is irrelevant. 13. At no time have we even intimated that we would not install the doors. It is of course part of our responsibilities and we have done that. 14. Similarly, we asked the owner to choose knobs and pulls so we could fit them, but had no response after following up. The owner recently told us that the knobs and pulls are on back order. As of this writing, the install is nearly complete. We expect to have the replacement cabinets ready by the end of the week. The owner has used multiple contractors for every trade. We know of at least three electricians and three framing and carpentry contractors as well as multiple HVAC and plumbing companies. While one might expect a project to experience some changes to the vendor line-up, changes on this order indicate a different problem. This owner has never undertaken a construction project of any sort let alone one of this magnitude. Her inexperience has been a hindrance to all concerned.
