The work started approximately Mar. 10, 2014 and finally finished May 15, 2104. While there were many rainy days and some delay in delivery of materials, a considerable amount of the delay was due to his crews who, other than the foreman, Danny, seemed to have no idea what they were to do or how to do the it - when they were working it was slow and ineffectual. Most seemed to be new hires. I liked RD Simpkins as a person but not as a landscape contractor. He seemed not to communicate well with his crews, was not there most of the time and did not inspect his crew's work unless I brought it up. Even then often the corrections were not done. He does not complete the job with all of the detail work done carefully. While our contract called for a Rock Driveway and RV Pad, RD suggested using a crushed concrete material that was usually more expensive than the rock but he would be able to get it a reduced price at this time. As I was very concerned about the materials ability to handle water runoff, during heavy rains I did go look at two driveways that he had done with the crushed concrete and they seemed to function well. So I agreed to the crushed concrete and it was installed. Following two heavy rains, I was dismayed to find the material laced with glass shards and other construction materials - I then learned that this material was meant to be used a base under surface materials. To his credit, RD did not argue about replacing the crushed concrete with rock. The driveway and RV Pad now look good. The RV Pad is now level side to side, though this required my constant attention. To hire Trojan Landscape, Inc and RD Simpkins: Research your project thoroughly to know what will be required for a quality job. Insist that the contract specify all the materials and methods for a proper installation. Insist on a scale drawing of the work. If drainage is involved, have your site surveyed to know what the problems and solutions are. Know that his crews will not be knowledgeable and capable. Know that RD will have reasons why he is not to blame for most problems. Lastly know that you will have to take care of cleaning up all of the details.
