Harmony Remodeling

Homebuilders, Architects

About us

We have been Birmingham’s respectful home remodeling company for the past 20 years, and as such - we have found that most home owners fear that during the process, their home will be violated and they will feel inconvenienced and disrespected. This is why Harmony Remodeling has created a unique method of construction that guarantees the home owner with an on-time, clean, responsible, stress free remodeling experience that will surpass their exacting standards and high expectations. We put as much emphasis on the process as we do the product. We are after your referral, not your savings account. Our company's core values are based on honesty, integrity, good ethics, UNCONDITIONAL RESPECT and most of all … HARMONY. By working “in sync” and unselfishly with our homeowners - our fellow employees, our suppliers, and our shareholders all have the same goal: Harmony. Simply put, "The Harmony Way” was developed to provide everyone involved more life; a better life with as little stress or disruption as possible. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- We started out in 1996, doing a few small jobs which eventually led to many larger projects. As the company grew, we came to understand that the way we made the Homeowners feel had more of an impact on the project than the physical structure that we built. We constructed many custom homes and finished many remodeling projects that were "fit for a king." But we began to realize that you can create the most incredible kitchen, bath, house - whatever, for someone … and if you stress them out in the process, they won't appreciate any of it. So, with that knowledge, we started focusing on the "process" as much as we did the product. The result was that time after time, when we put everything we had into showing the upmost of respect to the owner, their family, their property, and (most of all) their every day routine, it was a success. In the end, they loved the job and would emphatically refer us to thier friends. So today, we've fine-tuned this approach and developed a code of conduct for our employees, our subs and our vendors that focuses on our number one objective: Trust and Respect. Once that is established, we can accomplish anything and rest assured that everyone is happy. So, when we are asked, "What makes your company different?," it's easy. Our business systems focus on the desire to deliver a "Stress Free Remodeling Experience," (as opposed to fast profits) which in turn results in our customers' delight with the project AND THE PROCESS. At Harmony, we're interested in a GREAT referal, not your savings account.

The results were better than we could have imagined. From the time we broke ground, the estimated time of completion was pretty close despite working during the winter and having a couple weeks where no work could be done. The contractors were friendly and paid attention to the details we gave them. Mike was awesome with his follow up, making sure everything was done the way it was planned! He is a stickler for cleanliness and the little details that meant a lot to us with our addition. We added a master bedroom, bathroom, closet, guest bedroom, guest bathroom and mud room; remodeled a kitchen, turned a bedroom into a laundry room and closet and a bathroom into a pantry... paved a very steep driveway and poured a sidewalk and double parking slab. all in 4-5 months. Not to mention we live in an area where it is difficult to find builders/contractors that will show up much less complete a job. Excellent job and we would certainly recommend him!!!

We did not choose firm to do project. The quote to do the project was high. We considered two ways large and small remodel. We got the large project done for less than their quote for the small project. Mike was fine to work with otherwise.

Mike did not return my call till the next day when I first called him; when he did call back, he quickly referred me to his wife so she could discuss the job further with me. I didnt hear back for another 2 days, but then got a call back and Ms Jones was very pleasant and we decided to meet the next week at the home so she could review the basement, and give me an estimate. On the day of the meeting, I was told that Mike only works with customers after Ms Jones has created a plan (for which the customer is charged 500-1500 dollars), and he would not consider discussing the project till a plan was finalised per ms Jones. This after they were told the basement was partially finished, stubbed and pumbed. I was surprised a remodelling company would try and force customers to spend upwards of 500 dollars just to discuss the project. Had several other leading companies give me a quote, and nobody showed such an attitude. Very disappointing. I will be taking my business somewhere else.

Response from Harmony Remodeling
This is partially true. True: Harmony Remodeling will not give a free quote on a project, where objects are relocated or drawings are required for permitting purposes, without a set of plans. Its part of our "Client Fulfillment Process" and we feel we cannot ensure a quotes accuracy based on what we think is inside of a Homeowner's mind. However, It does not matter to Harmony where you get those plans or who draws them. Your welcome to draw them yourself if you'd like. We do have several talented Architects and Designers that we recommend based on past performance and they base their fees according to that talent. They are all independent contractors and Harmony receives no compensation for any part of this. We recommend them because they have the "Artistic" Ability to see possibilities most people couldn't and they make sure we get the chance to explore every option. This "Planning" Stage of the project is the most critical and most mistakes made during the remodeling process are due to a lack of proper planning. Therefore, in an attempt to minimize mistakes and keep stress to a minimum, this is the most important part of the process and we will not just give out hap-hazard quotes "on the fly". Most contractors don't understand the importance of the process and will give free quotes without any drawings because either they haven't learned to plan yet, or they know, but don't care if the quote is accurate because they know they can make it up with Change Orders later. This has turned into a "rant" so i'm quitting now, but call me anytime if any part of this does't make sense. Thanks, Mike Jones 205-365-6575

We have a typical basement for the area...half garage/half unfinished. It was wasted space we wanted to transform into something that would "grow" with us and our boys, while being comfortable for guests to stay in as well. Mike returned my call quickly, and his wife, Jenny, came out within a few days to measure and create a few designs to choose from based on what we wanted. She did a great job...had ideas I did not think of that were much more practical in terms of kids and space while maintaining a "man cave" atmosphere. The quote was comprehensive...I made some upgrades along the way and they accommodated everything. The supervisor, David, was great! I would text him pictures of things I wanted and he would get them immediately. He kept in constant contact and came out whenever it was convenient for me. The space turned out AMAZING! It was exactly what we wanted. Honestly, their suggestions were always the right choices but we never felt pressured to make a decision. David and Mike are easy to talk to...professional...and take pride in their work. We are actually having them come back to landscape our backyard soon. I would highly recommend them!

They were professional and did the job in a timely manner on budget. I would recommend this contractor to anyone and any job big or small. I have kept them on to do some additional work.

My husband and I are planning on adding an addition to our home. i called Mike and left a message. He returned my call and after explaining what we were planning to he asked if we had any plans prepared. I told him we did not but were open for suggestions. He referred us to his wife Jenny. She sent me an email the next day asking if she could "run by" that Friday morning. I explained to her that both my husband and I work and asked if we could come up with a better time. She never responded. I gave them an F because I think it's so unprofessional to not do the simplest of things, like return a phone call or an email. If she was so busy that she couldn't accommodate us, then just SAY SO. If Harmony Remodeling makes plenty of money in their business, then we are happy to hand ours over to someone who would appreciate the work.

Hi [member name removed], Michael passed along your Angie’s List review to me and I wanted to personally apologize for dropping the ball. Needless to say, he is more than angry with me for my haphazardness leading to a poor review for his company. Tho we do occasionally work together, our businesses are separate and I feel very bad on MANY levels. I am not in any way making excuses; I did just want to say I am sorry. It was not with ill intent that I failed to get back with you – I actually was trying to come up with an evening or weekend that I could meet and I somehow just let too much time get away. We have 5 children (one of which is only 3 months) and I try desperately to keep 8AM-4PM working hours but he had said you were such a pleasure to speak with … I wanted to accommodate you. I TOTALLY acknowledge that my procrastination was very unprofessional. I should have at the very LEAST let you know I was trying to slot some afterhours time for you. I’m not sure if there is any way I can get back in your good graces? Or if you might consider offering me a second chance. I completely understand if you do not – and appreciate your hesitation in doing so … but I wanted to throw it out there in the event you felt so compelled. At the very minimum, I wanted to be sure to recognize and apologize for my negligence - regardless of the outcome. Kindest personal regards, Jennie Jones

To sum it up in one word, EXCELLENT!!! From design to completion, it wasn't always easy, but it was always pleasant. The hardest part for me was deciding on a design that I liked and that fit into my limited budget. I gave them a rough idea of what I wanted and they gave me a few options of things I could do with the money and space available. All of the design choices were wonderful and I had a difficult time choosing one. I ended up mixing different aspects from each design until we finally hit on one that jumped out at me and said THIS IS IT !!! Once the layout was decided they sent a kitchen cabinet design consultant to help me finalize my vision of the kitchen. They were so patient and kind with me during this process. Once the design phase was complete, work began immediately. I was given a tentative schedule showing how work would progress, and it was fairly accurate. It was nice to have an idea of what was going to happen each week. I expected lots of unforeseen problems with such an extensive renovation, but things progressed smoothly with no problems worth mentioning. Coordinating so many trades to work in such a limited area is difficult, and the very few times it got a little crowded, plans were changed efficiently and effortlessly. If anyone was irritated by the change in plans they never let it show. Everyone maintained a professional and courteous demeanor at all times. The entire crew was trustworthy and respectful. I felt very comfortable leaving a key for them to let themselves in on the few mornings I wasn't home. They were all decent, polite young men who never hesitated to help me when I was either loading or emptying the car when I had to do laundry or shopping. The work was completed within 8 weeks. I feel the price and timeframe were totally acceptable considering the amount of work done. I think the only thing I didn't like about the job was that I missed everyone when the job was completed. If they hadn't been so likeable I wouldn't have missed them as much. But I seem to be filling this void with my new, BEAUTIFUL kitchen. I can't seem to stay out of it. I'm always in there cooking and to date I've gained 12 lbs!!!! I'm glad they widened the entry door into the kitchen, because at this rate I'm going to need the extra wide opening. Some of my family members in Louisiana were so impressed with my kitchen, they've been inspired to repaint and remodel their kitchens. Too bad Harmony Remodeling isn't in Louisiana. I'd hired them before and would not hesitate to hire them again.
Description of Work: Complete kitchen/laundry renovation. Comprehensive drawn designs with itemized price list, gutting and demolition from floor to ceiling, followed by reconstruction, sheetrock, plumbing, wiring, painting, flooring and cabinetry. Price included allowance for plumbing fixtures, lighting fixtures, paint, cabinets, countertops, hardware and flooring. The only items not included in price were large appliance purchases, refrigerator, stove and dishwasher, that I chose to replace.

We had Mike's wife draw up plans. She did a great job, however everyone was unaware of a potential code issue with the plan as written. However, Mike and Jennie were very gracious to fix the problem and were very, very fair with us in the process when we had to do a bit of retro-fitting in the end. This is important to deal with a trustworthy and fair contractor, who wants your repeat business vs. burning a bridge with clients. Due to this minor speedbump our project was delayed a couple weeks but we are very satisfied with the result and are actually glad that things worked out the way they did. Mike was able to meet out expectations for the room and Bo (his job supervisor) had some great creative ideas that saved us money, like staining the concrete floor vs. paying for tile installation. I appreciate very much Mike and Bo's professionalism and dedication to customer satisfaction. I would use them again and would recommend them without hesitation.

It was a wonderful experience, and I had been putting it off dreading it, but the project manager David Peek was always friendly helpful and on top of things, making sure at each step that I was satisfied. It came out exactly what I wanted. I was running under the estimate of 9500 , and they were doing such a great job, they traded me other work for a lot of other projects that did run the overage of 500, but what was extra , was agreed as extra. But I also had them rehang and repair another door, fix an outside sunroom door, and removed and replaced 2 non-functioning locks on the from door with higher grade locked with better mechanisms. They always draped everything and minimized dust on everything. Then cleaned up the bath and bedroom --a service not included in the estimate, but which they threw in. There motto was to keep the customer happy, even if they came up a little short here and there. I will have to save up some funds, but plan to use them again for any project they can do.
Description of Work: I received a detailed estimate for a bath remodel including total tile removal and replacement which included a significant amount of demolition to replace floor and walls. The electrical system was rewired and a fan placed. The shower was totally replaced with a new plumbing and fixtures. A window was remodeled into a shelving unit. A medicine cabinet was removed and replaced with a mirror (I did not want another medicine cabinet, so this was not an oversight) They suggested a few changes that made the bath safer as showing me the tile I picked for the bath was wall tile and I would need some floor tile also which was very helpful. They rehung the door and moved to slightly so it opened out and didn't hit the bedroom door when both were opened. Then they repainted everything that was not tiled.

Harmony was the only contractor of the four I contacted that provided a detailed plan for the work, listing of all of the tasks that would be necessary and the cost of each item. They were also one of the two low bidders. Since my old shower was leaking, we did not know the extent of the damage that would have to be repaired, so possible additional expenses were included in the budget. Ultimately the repairs were very minor, so the actual cost of the project was slightly lower than originally estimated. Right from the first contact, Harmony was very responsive and helpful. Work started as soon as we had finalized the design and agreed on a budget. I was given a project timeline showing when each block of work would be done, as well as a list of the subcontractors that would be performing the work. All of the subcontractors showed up on the expected date, and all performed excellent work. My house was left clean and free of debris at the end of each day. The project was completed quickly and right on time. Throughout the construction, Mike Jones of Harmony Remodeling was responsive and a pleasure to deal with. I rarely waited more than an hour for a return phone call or e-mail. I had dreaded the idea of doing the construction and postponed it for months. Had I known how painless it would turn out to be, I would have started a lot earlier! I will not hesitate to call on Harmony Remodeling for all of my future projects, nor hesitate to recommend them to close personal friends.

Mike and his team have really performed well! I'm the homeowner, but I encouraged Mike to put his sign in the yard, right when I knew I would 100% recommend Harmony to others. That was within a couple of weeks! If you're reading this, and you're looking for someone to build a house, remodel a house, or simply change out some old windows, give Mike & Harmony a call. Compare your initial experience with him to anyone else you might contact, and I'll bet you'll feel comfortable going with Harmony as well.
Description of Work: Got an email from Angie's, requesting my review of several companies appearing here. One of those was Harmony Remodeling, whom I happen to be in the middle of a total home remodeling project. Usually, I'll push aside and move on to something else, but my experience so far has been really great! I initially met with Mike Jones, the owner of Harmony, to share the architectural plans, walk the existing structure, and discuss costs and timeframe. He was professional from the get go. He was eager to cover all the bases to my satisfaction. And, he presented a full cost outline within a very short time. Having served as GC on several projects myself, we talked about some ideas to cut costs, without cutting quality - to get me where I needed to be. But, his price was actually great when laid beside other bids, and my review against my past projects. After Mike incorporated some of what we discussed, I felt comfortable, we shook hands, and the work began promptly. The complete inside/outside gut and renovation of the 1926 bungalow in Homewood, entails adding a basement room and shelter space to a home that never had a basement. From there, we've added an addition to the main level that creates about 750 more square feet. The goal is to transition the home forward with extra space, efficiency & amenties, but without losing sight of the year it was actually built.

Mike Jones with Harmony Remodeling did a great job at working on pricing out the home that we were to build. He was extremely organized with itemizing out each part of the building process and being very specific as to how much each phase would cost which was very helpful to us. He was good at returning phone calls. We had three builders price out the house and he came in second lowest but was still about 13% more in price than the builder that we selected. He had a long list of references and those that we called all had very good remarks about this company.

Response from Harmony Remodeling
We did a remodel consultation for this member, free of charge, and provided different drawings and designs, also free of charge. Then we gave her an itemized estimate of the cost on one particular design we felt she liked the most. The estimate was based on specifications and allowances for average materials and fixtures. We explained to her that it was just an estimate, and that when she made her selections we would be able to give her a more accurate quote. At that point she let us know that there was no way that she would spend that much money and then never called us back. We apologize if we were unclear when giving her the original estimate and wish that she would have given us the time to finish working through the estimating process, especially after working so hard for her during the initial consolation and design as well as all the hours in the drawings and estimate.

The job was well done. The wait time starting the project was minimal and it was completed on time. This was important to me since it was an unplanned project. Everyone was polite and courteous and available for questions. We were always kept in the loop for the next phase of the project.
Description of Work: Mr Jones and Mr Massey repaired my home after a large tree fell on the roof. The services included replacing rafters, roof decking, installing roof shingles, masonry work, painting inside and outside house, gutter installation and repair, and drywall repair. The job was done in a reasonable time frame and within budget which can be rare in many general contractors. If some thing was left out it was corrected as soon as possible. I would definitely recommend them for any general contracting or home building needs.

This was the first project I had done by Harmony Remodeling, but not the last. I couldn't have been more pleased with the outcome of their work. Mike Jones is very honest and knowledgeable. The crew was courteous and professional. Even the sub contractors for plumbing and wiring were wonderful. The job began on time and was finished within the time frame given. Great company, great work, great people.
Description of Work: Soon after I bought my home, my elderly father came to live with me and I had to make a lot of changes to my home to accommodate for his needs. I had a closet converted to a half bath. This entailed plumbing for the installation of a full basin and a handicap commode, electrical wiring for an exhaust fan and lighting, installation of flooring and of course, painting the walls. Note: Also included in this price was an exterior iron railing that was designed, built and installed at the front entrance to assist my father in going up and down the steps.
