Smith Lake Construction, Glen Odam, 205-385-2726, 14 Downard Drive, Jasper AL. 35501, was paid over $18,000 for roof repairs to four steel buildings damaged during the AL Tornado Disaster 2011. Workers mostly unsupervised, showed up late, took long lunches, left early & joked that they had better hours than bankers. I was not called if the workers were not going to show up. The roof repair that should have taken less than 2 wks took several wks. The contractor finally said they finished except for checking for leaks after the next rain. I paid Smith Lake Construction the amount requested but was not provided with an itemized list of the services actually performed. In review of the original insurance estimate, it appears that Smith Lake Construction overcharged in excess of $4,000 for materials & work that was not done. It has rained several times now & there are screws missing, many leaks, insulation sagging & full of water. There are buckets sitting around everywhere & more leaks than before Smith Lake Construction began work on the buildings. The interior work cannot be completed until the leaks are stopped. Multiple attempts have been made to contact Glen Odam. He will not answer our calls & does not have VMS. We finally saw him at the local restaurant & talked to him about the charges for work not actually preformed & about scheduling to finish roof repairs. To date he has not shown up as scheduled & still will not answer our calls. The day after Smith Lake Construction / Glen Odam was paid for the work, I left the property shortly before10 AM. While I was away, the workers showed up & decided to ignore the no trespassing signs & 3 locked gates. One of the workers walked over ½ mile, up the back access road. He took a 4 wheeler that had a key left in the ignition. It was inside a building that at the time still had a damaged door. He rode it to front access where he discovered another locked gate that prevented him from leaving the property with the 4 wheeler. I returned shortly after this. I saw vehicle tracks at the lower gate, 4 wheeler tracks inside the upper gate area. Before I had time to check out what was going on, the workers drove up & started working as if nothing had happened. I questioned them about how they got here so quickly, the 4 wheeler tracks & discovered what had happened. The worker said that he was going to ride it down to the lower gate to get his tools. The only tools need to finish the work was a battery operated drill to replace a few screws, all other materials were still in the work area. This is our home, not just construction site. What part of Locked Gates, No Trespassing Signs & Unauthorized Use of a Vehicle. do you not understand, not to mention setting off the security system. These 2 Smith Lake employees are not welcome back on our property.
