Planet hardwood does very high quality work. The floor is extremely nice looking. Mike (the owner) encouraged us to go with a lighter color than we originally planned and he was absolutely correct in his assessment. They placed a darker inlay in the dining room of our home that required a lot of work and looks fantastic. We have three dogs that damaged the original floor (lower quality) with their paws; the new floor, after three months, is much more durable and doesn?t display any damage. All the employees were friendly and helpful. The only negatives are that Planet Hardwood is extremely busy and can be a little unresponsive to questions and concerns. Mike could also listen better to what customers have to say. We would have appreciated them starting when they first said they would start so that they could have been done when expected, but we are so happy with the work that we are willing to forgive that lapse. Overall, we are extremely pleased with Planet Hardwood and will use them again if we ever need wood flooring installed. I would also recommend them to anybody else who needs wood flooring.

We are very pleased with the refinished floors in our house. We posed a bit of a problem for Mike, in that we wanted to break the job into three sessions instead of the usual one session. So, while Mike said this would delay the process, it would not be unmanageable. Mike, Douglas and Marcus began the restoring our floors in late September and finished in late October. The floors are beautiful now. Having the three sessions was difficult from a living standpoint, due to furniture moving and it being stacked floor to ceiling in rooms where work was not being done. It also appeared difficult from a customer standpoint, watching the guys move the sanding equipment many times, but in the end it all worked out and Douglas, Marcus and Mike made the floors look fantastic. If your hardwood floors need to be redone, I highly recommend Plant Hardwood.

Flooring was scheduled to be installed 11/14 and 11/15. Delays occurred changing the installation date to 11/15. Due to other communication errors the floors were completed by 11/19. Once I complained about the floor completion delay to the owner, he INTIMATELY try to fix things. I believe the communication gap was addressed and taken care of professionally. If you are looking to get flooring installed, I would recommend asking for the written estimate that is given to you to list the estimated square footage to be installed and the price rate for that square footage. I was thrown off when the bill was due, because I thought the installation price was at a different rate than it really was. I would have gone with another installer if I knew the installation rate, simply because I had others quote a lower rate per square foot. Regardless I thought the quality of the installation was great. Whatever I noticed wrong with the floor (minor things) was fixed quickly.

Due to a clogged air conditioner discharge pipe, water caused a section of my parquet floor to buckle. Mike removed the damage section and put in unstained parquet that I provided. The new section was sealed and stained to match the existing flooring. Than 2 coats of polyurethane were applied. the new section is a perfect match with the existing floor.

The owner, Mike, was able to come out immediately to give us a quote to refinish floors in our new home and we were very glad to hear they could start within a few days. We were very impressed with the punctuality and professionalism throughout the whole process. Mike was extremely knowledgeable and made excellent recommendations for us as far as stain and finish. They finished just a few days after what the estimated date of competition would be, but some things are unpredictable (our floors had some moisture due to the previous owner's error). The clean up by the team was also excellent, as there was very little dust left for us to clean up. Would highly recommend and will definitely be using again when we redo our kitchen!

I was extremely dissatisfied with lack of interest, flimsy excuse and posting a photo of a house/building that was not even used in the business.
Description of Work: Failed to show up for estimate. Called on phone to find out what happened. Owner answered and offered excuse that he was waiting for a wood shipment. Little apology. Asked about photo on web site. Admitted that they bought the "house" in photo but didn't work out of the site. I had tried to stop by to ask questions and could not even find a sign.

Response from Planet Hardwood
Yes, i missed an appointment for an estimate. And I apologised for it. And I meant it. But seriously,… Who is this guy?! and on what pedestal has he planted himself?! I «offered an excuse»? I wasnt offering any excuse. he asked where i was and i told him the truth. I offered him my opology that i was detained, and further apologized for not calling him. (that must be the «little apology» he mentioned) I am not perfect, and am running a small company singlehandedly. All It takes is for a few things on my tightly packed schedule to happen in the wrong order and something falls through the cracks. But what kind of person are you to then publicly flog someone for it even after they apologized for the blunder? And what is all the nonsense about a photo of a house on my website? If I have a website, I would love for someone to send me the address to it so that i can go and see this photo he is talking about. He asked me about the business adress that I have listed and I told him,… (and I quote) « we purchased the property reciently, but are still in the process of remodeling it, and so the site is not open yet.» but again,… seriously,…. Who does he think he is?! I don’t owe him, or anyone else an explaination of what I am using my building for. And just for the record, we do «work out of this site» (as his accusation denies) we just are not open to the public yet. One thing that I did not do was offer to reschedule the missed appointment. in spite of my apology, and explaination of why our showroom was not open yet, his person was rude, confrontational, and nasty to me. At that moment all i could think of was how relieved I was to find out before I had become more involved with him. another thing that you (angies list members) are missing, are some of the details of the post that you don’t get to see, but I do. He made a particular point to announce that he is a Doctor. must be used to a lot of luxury service which explains his senseless anger at the fact that he «could not even find a sign». It just screams of entitlement! i somehow wronged him by «not working out of the site» apparently, I not only missed our appointment, but i also forgot to call him and get his approval on my other business practices as well. I think the only «flimsy excuse» here is his of being a human being. Folks, I’m not pretending to be something I’m not. I make mistakes just like everyone else. And when I do, I admit it and i do the best i can to make it right. And I am not trying to follow any corporate response protocol, or any kind of guideline of political correctness. I respond to these reviews honestly because I believe it makes everything easier if you get to know me and who I am before I arive at your doorstep. the best compliment i ever got was a recient customer who told me she read all the reviews that I replied to, and that i was exactly like what she immagined i would be. The bottom line is all about what you want. what is the most important thing to you. If you want the best quality job, done by the best quality craftsmen in the industry, then you are going to be dealing with a small company, or an individual. And you are going to have to be a little bit flexible. If your main focus is to be pampered and have your ego polished and be treated like the queen of your world, than a big box, high production company is where you should go. You will get exactly what you want. And I am not just spouting off theories. I have been on both sides of this fence for quite a while. We have been building a house and have been using only the industries best subcontractors. And I have had to be very flexible, and sometimes a bit forgiving, But I am getting exactly what i want. And I highly reccomend it.

PH was punctual as the work commenced. They started when they said they would. They were very professional and had a great knowledge of the trade. The wood looks beautiful with the 2 coats of poly. It took a while as they refinished a bunch of hardwood. The foyer was a challenge as the floor had to be leveled after the removal of the concrete base for the cut tiles installed in the early sixties. Its a small foyer and all 4 sides had to be leveled to meet the current hardwood and door. The tile work took longer than I thought it would, but it looks equally as good. My only regret was not using a higher grade of wood to better match the existing hardwood. But I was provided that option and didn't take it.
Description of Work: Installed hardwood in the kitchen, den and foyer and installed tile in the laundry. Refinished hardwood floors in all bedrooms, hall and living room. Blended all new and old hardwood to look as it continuously flowed.

Excellent job. Fast to return our call for service. Quick and VERY fair estimate given. Always arrived at the time and day he specified. Sent a large crew. Job was done quickly, professionally and with good clean up. Mike, the owner, always came to inspect the work after the crew was finished. I would HIGHLY recommend them for your service! My 3/4" oak hardwood floors had been covered with carpet and padding for the past 34 years. The padding had been stapled into the floors (not just on the staple strips at the edges of the floors). Also, the baseboards had been installed before the floors were finished when the home was built originally in 1964. Therefore, the edges of the floors were "raw" wood. Mike and his crew were punctual, courteous, and extremely helpful. They use equipment that creates minimal dust throughout my home. The floors are awesome! They look new without any staple or nail marks in the tops. The wood pieces in one of my bedrooms had separated at the end of some boards. Those separations have been filled in and look great! I highly recommend Planet Hardwood for all of your hardwood floor needs.

Mike responded immediately to our request for help. We had to fire our previous installer after he gave us the run-around. We called Mike and he had a crew at our home the next morning. His installers were subcontractors. We did have to remind them a few times to use a vacuum when cutting in open areas where the dust was not confined. The dust did require we hire a cleaner to come out but Mike was good enough to deduct that from our final bill. The finishing crew who work directly for Mike were punctual, polite, and professional. The quality was outstanding. Mike also agreed to come back out for any minor issues that need correcting. I would definitely do business with Mike again and have recommended him to friends already.

Response from Planet Hardwood
Thank you for your kind comments. I would like to clear up one thing though. As a general rule we (Planet Hardwood) do not use subcontractors. usually the installation, sanding, and finishing is done by myself, and my employees. However, on this occasion, and only because of the urgency of the deadline, we did have someone install the floor for us. This member called me and asked if we could install, sand and finish 2000 square feet of hardwood,.... tomorow. My installation crew was already fully committed on another job, so to meet her deadline, the only way was to subcontract the installation. I used a very qualified and reputable installer, and the member was made aware of it before we began. The dust incident occured while prepping the floor for the installation and was an unfortunate accident, but like she said, I paid for a cleaning service to come out and completely clean the entire house. We did all of the sanding and finishing with our Bona Certified finishers, and the floor turned out beautifully. (and dust free!)

Mike told my wife and me about the high quality and durability of Bona Traffic, and sold us on it when he said his kids drag toys across his own hardwood floors without scratching. We have indoor cats so scratch resistance is important. Our first mistake was not getting the product to be used in writing. He used Bona Mega which is not as good as the Traffic. When we expressed disappointment that he used Mega he said it was the lower VOC product. Actually, Bona Traffic HD is the lowest and by far the best product - also the one we thought we were getting. Our floor scratches easily now and still has a shiny streak that he said would go away after the finish dried. He did not show up on time to do the work. I was going in to my job an hour late and ended up being 3 hours late because he didn't arrive when he said he would. Most disappointing of all is that when we called afterward to talk about our concerns with the the refinish, he said he tried to talk us out of doing the buff and re-coat because it often has a poor outcome. This simply isn't true. If he had advised against the procedure there is no way we would have paid nearly $900 to have it done. We chose Planet Hardwood because of the rave reviews here, but regret our decision.

Response from Planet Hardwood
First let me start by saying that Angie’s list will not let me use names, so, as silly as it may sound, I will have to refer to them in this response as mr. and mrs homeowner. When I arrived at their house to give them a WRITTEN estimate, I spent about an hour going over the details of the two options they had available. Buff and recoat, or Refinish. I recommended to them to do the refinish because (and I quote) I said “you will not see a significant difference with just a buff and recoat”. There were two different colors of refinished floor in the same open area. With a refinish, I could make it all one color. I told them that the only thing that the recoat would do is make it all one sheen. It would not make the surface scratches go away, it would not fix the severe fading from the sunlight, and would not be able to fill all the shrinkage gaps between the boards. I told them that the only really noticeable change would be that they were going to reduce the shine level from the current “semi-gloss” to a “satin”. I told them that the “bang-for-your-buck” factor just wasn’t there for a buff and recoat. I told them I would quote it both ways, and they could decide later which they wanted to do. I measured the floor for the estimate, and then we started talking about the finish options. Initially, they wanted me to use a finish that they had found online that supposedly had a VOC (volatile organic compound) rating of 0.0 g/L. after a little investigation they discovered it could not be used in the Buff and Recoat format, so they asked me for suggestions. They wanted a Low VOC finish because Mrs. homeowner is severely sensitive to any type of contaminant. I told them that I use Bona products because of their Greenguard certification, and superior durability. I told them that the the most durable of these was the Catalyzed versions, of which there were two choices; Traffic, and catalyzed Mega. There are Issues with the Traffic finish developing “white line syndrome” on floors that shrink and swell as their floor obviously was doing, so I recommended the Mega. I did stay that it was the lower VOC product, which turns out to be incorrect, but only by an extremely insignificant margin. Mega VOC - 150 g/L, Traffic VOC - 125 g/L. just to give you a frame of reference, Oil based polyuethane VOC - 500 to 600 g/L (depending on brand). And to say Mega is “not as good as Traffic”, is literally like taking a list of the top 100 finishes on the market and saying that the number 2 product isn’t as good as the number 1 product. And keep in mind that the number 1 (traffic) is not an available option because of the potential shrinking/swelling causing the white line syndrome. The most important thing though is that statement they made about traffic being what they thought they were getting. I gave them a written estimate. It clearly says “Buff and recoat floors using Bona water base polyurethane, It does not say anywhere anything about Traffic. I realize that I gave them a lot of information, but it was only because they asked a lot of questions. I don’t expect them to remember every little detail, but it’s another thing entirely to accuse me of intentionally deceiving them, and then to use Angie’s list as a forum to extort a discount. There were a few things in their statement that were partly true though. They did call my attention to the shiny spot on the floor the day I picked up the final check for the job. I told them that it could possibly be a thicker spot in the finish and may disappear as the finish cures . I told them in a bout a week or two if it was still visible to call me and I would come and take care of it. I never heard about it again until this post. I assumed that it had gone away. I received two phone calls about the floor. The first was from Mr homeowner. The entire conversation was about the VOC, and that his wife was still experiencing difficulties 2 weeks after floors were completed. He told me he was considering tearing them out and installing something else. I told him That I didn’t have any ideas for him except that the urethane glue and dust from the project would likely affect his wife more than the finish i used. The second call was from Mrs. homeowner. She told me that the floor was scratching easily. I asked her if they had put felt pads on everything. She said yes. I asked her to where the scrtches were. She said they were under a stool. A stool, it turns out, that does not have felt pads on its feet. Then she says “But it didn’t scratch the floor before”. The last part of their complaint is about me being late. I always ask people what will be the arrangement for me to get into the job site, or to leave and come back if needed. Mr homeowner told me that his son would be staying home that day and so the door would be open. Yes, I was supposed to arrive at 8, and I didn’t get there until 10, but at no time did he tell me he would be waiting for me to get there to go to work. I told him I would have the job completed in one day, and I did. I take particular issue with this because to me it just sounds like an afterthought of angry fluff, designed to give substance to his other complaints. I would be happy co come out and fix the shiny spot, just like I said I would in the first place, But as for their demand for 50% of their money back, the answer is no. I did exactly what my estimate said I would do. I finished on time, and within the price I quoted. There is nothing wrong with the quality of the job. The scratches they have were caused by them, and after ignoring my recommendation to put felt pads on all the furniture. I spent a great deal of time trying to educate them to the process and the options available. I can not force people to remember, nor can i be responsible for their assumptions. They had my quote, in writing, and I didn’t deviate from it in any way. Respectfully Mike Ward

We had some existing hardwood floors in our house, but wanted hardwood throughout. Mike and his crew had to lay new wood floors and refinish the existing so that they all matched. From start to finish, Mike and his crew were awesome. Mike is very knowledgable and definitely knows what he is doing. He and his crew were punctual and professional and showed up when they said they were going to. They were able to blend the new floors with the old ones and they look great! Mike was also very flexible when it came to installation. We did not want to vacate our home during the process, so he was able to do the floors in stages. I'm sure this was more work for him and his crew, but we appreciated the fact that he was willing to accommodate us. All in all, it was a great experience and we definitely recommend Planet Hardwood.

Carpet and particle board was removed from family room and hall to allow for continuous hardwood through kitchen/dining/family room/foyer/hall areas. They refinished existing kitchen, dining and foyer hardwood to match interconnected new hardwood in family room and hall. All the hardwood areas look like they were installed at the same time, but 18 years elapsed between the different installations. Highly recommend Planet Hardwood.
Description of Work: Installed oak flooring in family room/hall and re-finished old oak flooring in kitchen/dining/foyer areas to match new.

Right before Thanksgiving I closed on my new house. This was my first house to purchase on my own and trying to save money I watched videos and researched how to refinish hardwood floors. My goal was for my two kids and I to have Christmas morning in our new home. About three weeks into working on the floors in the evenings after work and on the weekends I came to the difficult realization that I was stuck in a problem area and needed help. It was a Saturday and a friend gave me a telephone number of someone he recommended. I called right away and the owner of Planet Hardwood was at my house within 2 hours. Mike measured the entire house, gave an estimate and talked with me about different types of stain as well as the process they use. To my relief they began that very next Monday on the floors and finished on Saturday. The floors are absolutely beautiful! Although we were not moved in to the house we still had our Christmas morning gathered around our little tree on the beautiful floors opening gifts and enjoying being with one another in our new home....The perfect Christmas! A huge thank you to Planet Hardwood for helping make this Christmas a very special one. Mike and his company was very knowledgeable, courteous, prompt and professional. I will recommend him to others and will call on his company again if ever needed.

The hardwood flooring turned out excellent and we have been very satisfied with it this past year. It really changed the appearance of the house. Mike and his crew were always professional and punctual. We have just had him back to install the hardwood stairway and his stairway installer (Ron) did an excellent job. Ron was very meticulous and did an unbelievable job. He is a PERFECTIONIST. The stairs turned out perfect and noiseless. He was punctual, never took a break, and on top of all this he has a wonderful personality! We would definitely recommend Planet Hardwood. Thank you Mike and Ron.
Description of Work: Last December (2012) Planet Hardwood (Mike Ward) installed new hardwood flooring throughout our house. Due to his excellent work, we just had him back to install a hardwood stairway in place of the old carpeted stairway.
