Refinishing hardwood floors, and installing new, Solid, or engineered, site finished, or prefinished, hardwood floors.
Description of Work: Mr. Ward was hired to install hardwoods floors in our home. Floors were installed in June 2015, but the transition to our powder room was room was left unfinished, because we needed to come up with a solution on how to finish it out due to floor drop between the two rooms. Mr. Ward was paid in full and he gave us his word he would come back and finish the transition. I started contacting Mr. Ward in August about finishing the transition and got numerous excuses. When he finally came out in September and met with my husband, he said he would order the wood and get back with my husband when he got back from vacation, we heard nothing from him - I contacted him on Nov 4, Nov 11 and yesterday 1 Dec. At that time I told him we had been more than patient and wanted the work finished. Needless to say Mr. Ward is not holding up to his word to finish a job he was paid in full for and fills that refunding us $30 is enough. We are left paying another contractor labor and materials, which amounts to a lot more than $30. I WOULD NOT recommend Planet Hardwood.

Description of Work: They scraped, repaired and painted our entire historic home. The house is 5000 square feet, and was built in 1818. They did an incredible job. Their workers were polite and kept the site clean. They even put up with my two terriers and were careful not to let them out of the gate. I highly recommend them and wouldn't use anyone else!

Description of Work: Mike performed two separate jobs for us; re-buffing approximately 1200 sq-ft and re-finishing approximately 1000 sq-ft. Let me first say that Mike takes pride in his floor work and the results were certainly more than acceptable. | |The re-buffing which included the application of poly/water base/oil base coat did not remove the impressions that had been transferred to the floor finish from a throw rug padding material from the prior owner. Mike had explained ahead of time that that might be the case with rebuffing and that the only sure way to get those removed might be to refinish the floor. We chose the re-buffing approach and ended up with the same results. Mike still went ahead and tried a second time to buff those impressions out with little success. Mike performed both of the buffing jobs on short notice and on a non-interference basis with the moving in of our household goods. The floors look very nice and we're happy with the appearance of the re-buffed floors. | |The refinishing job required a little more extra finesse in that new boards had to be spliced into existing boards before the re-finishing effort could commence. It was also difficult to match the color on the 50 year old wood with the new boards despite using the same color and product. Mike spent time testing color mixes that would blend the two woods and re-stained the floors. He did an excellent job accomplishing this and the refinish, stain work, and topcoat look very nice. | |All jobs create debris and waste and this was no different in this case. Unfortunately, and because Mike was managing a non-floor related job here at the same time, there were some piles of old floor material and container of saw dust that were left on site far longer after the completion of the job than expected, even after providing several reminders to Mike to get them removed. This made the front porch and part of the driveway unusable during that period of time which lasted several months. This is why we rated Professionalism a little lower. Once the entire job was completed, Mike did an exceptional job of cleaning the inside and outside dirt and debris. | |This was a difficult job for us to review because of the concurrent non-floor job. It's difficult to judge punctuality, for example, because sub-contractors were involved. Certainly Mike worked very hard and responded very quickly to our requests. He is also a nice person who was very helpful in connecting us with other services in the community. | |Overall, we are happy with the results of the floor work that Mike performed in our house. Six months later the floors look good with no issues. We would certainly recommend him for other floor jobs whether they be rebuffing or re-finishing. |

Description of Work: Mike came out at the time agreed and gave me a estimate for having my entire house floors sanded, stained and polyurethane; approx. 1100sqft. The price was reasonable however I wasn't able to afford it. After talking with Mike about my situation he offered to just do the sanding of the floors for a fraction of the estimate and while I really wanted him to do it. I just couldn't afford it right now. Mike is a really great guy and I know that if I have any projects in the future, I will definitely will be calling him.

Overall the experience was average. The response time was excellent. Mike came out and gave us an estimate and did the work the next day. We were just moving into the house and our furniture was coming four days later, so the timing was perfect. I was a little let down by the look of the floors when he finished. You can see swirl marks on the floor from the buffer, there are bits of old poly stuck in places on the floor, and the coat seems uneven as if some areas didn't get coated. The floors look better than they did, but not as good as I expected. With that being said Mike was nice to work with and even came back out to bring a stain pen, because he had taken some of the color off the boards.
Description of Work: The wood floors in our house needed to have the poly layer buffed off and reapplied. Mike brought in a buffer and took the old layer of poly off the floors, cleaned the floors, and then reapplied the poly layer.

This is a prime example of why I don’t perform this service anymore. This Customer had just purchased this house. The floors had a foggy residue on them (from years of the previous owner applying the wrong kind of cleaner, and then, “Orange Glo” to spruce them up for the sale). They called me, in a state of panic, because their furniture would be arriving shortly, and they wanted to “fix” the problem with the floors before it arrived. I came the same day they called and rearranged my personal schedule so that I could perform the service the next morning (Saturday). In their review, it says: “response time was excellent” and “timing was perfect”, for this…. Grade -- “B”. While I was there giving them the quote to do the job, I spent over an hour explaining to them that, because the flooring was a very cheap, laminate product, it could not be refinished. The only realistic option would be to tear it out and install new floor. They asked me about “recoating” the floor, and I tried to talk them out of it. It almost never works. And it is not the “miracle cure” that most people envision. I told them exactly what to expect. First of all, I did not “remove the poly layer” as she stated in the review. I spent 4 hours, and a lot of cleaner, and a very rough abrasive pad, cleaning off the orange glo, and years of “gunk” that were on the floor. Then, abraded it further, so that the new polyurethane would be able to have a chance to stick to the aluminum oxide, that was the factory finish on the floor. Then, apply one of the most expensive (albeit highest quality) finishes on the market, again, so that there would be a good chance of it sticking to the aluminum oxide coating. All of this was explained, in great detail, as was the expectation of outcome. I told them that I was going to have to scrub it so aggressively to get it clean and prepped for the new finish, that there would be swirl marks that would be visible in the finish. I told them that it would not look like a refinished floor, maybe a little better than “lipstick on a pig”, but certainly limited due to what we were working with. They said they understood, and when I left I thought they were happy with the results. I have not heard from them since the job was completed and have no idea why they waited 6 months to post this bizarre review. If there was anything else I could have done to make it look better, I would have. But again, this is why I don’t do this procedure anymore. Respectfully Mike Ward

He wound up starting late; the weather made the project take 4 extra days. Everything was finished except for the transition strips which he had forgotten about. It took him a couple of weeks to get to them, but he did it as promised. He also had misquoted me (low) on price, but since that was his quote, he was going to give me that price. Everyone who sees the floors loves them and can't believe the difference.
Description of Work: Mike came in and resanded the floors, and applied a natural oilbase polyurethane finish. He also added transition strips between tile and the wood floors. He used a dustless sander that worked great. The floors looked awful before he started - too dark, sticky, and I had doubts about what he could do.

The customer's floor was a good example of why you should not hire someone to do your floors who is not a Professional Flooring Contractor. Yes, it took a few extra days to complete, due partly to the flooding rain. But the thing that slowed the job down the most was fixing the all the "bad" refinishing job done by the previous guy that she hired. I refused to let it beat me, and I didn't charge her any extra, but that floor was about the most difficult transformations I have ever pulled off in my carreer. And then on top of that I had to do the stairs for free because i had forgotten to include them in my estimate. But it was my mistake, and I didn't ask for more. The transitions though, were not forgotten about. They were particularly difficult to do because of the height difference from the hardwood to the tile in the adjacent room. after several failed attempts to match something up, I finally had to make a custom moulding myself on my tablesaw that would meet the requirements. There was also the problem with the key. the key we had only opened one lock on the door, and several times that I went to install the transitions, someone had locked the other lock, that I had no key for. The customer was very easy to work with and I think happy with the way things turned out. The floors looked fantastic, and I could kick myself for not getting "before" and "after" pictures because then you would be able to see just what a miracle we pulled off. ...Mike Ward

Mike Ward, Owner of Planet Hardwood did an excellent job in removing wall to wall carpet and refinishing the underlying oak. What started out as a two day small job turned into a 14 day large job when they found a large area had no existing hardwood to be refinished. The old wood would have to be removed and replaced with oak then refinished. On the spot he had to give me a price. I was totally helpless and dependent. He gave me a fair price, he did not take advantage of a desperate older woman. I really appreciate that. Mike Ward and his sidekick, John Cook, did hard work, carefully and with attention to detail. Mike answered many questions, some repeatedly. They finished on time as promised. They did not brake anything or destroy anything. In a couple places they did a "favor" for me. Something that had nothing to do with the job, but easy for them and hard for me. The result was worth the price and they earned every penny of it. I strongly recommend use of this company.
Description of Work: Remove wall to wall carpet. Clean underlying oak hardwood. Refinish underlying oak hardwood. When a 14 ft x 12 ft area had no underlying hardwood, they removed the plywood, added oak and refinished that. Three rooms, two halls and a small bath.

I enjoyed very much working with Member. The reason it went from a 2 day, to a 14 day job, was because she was initially going to just have us remove the carpet and clean the hardwood floors. When the carpet had been removed, it turned out that half of one of the (largest) rooms had no hardwood in it. At that point, with the carpet already out, Member decided to have us install new wood in that room, and upgraded the "cleaning" to a full on refinish of the remaining rooms. Due to lack of space to move the furniture, she split it into two visits. On the first trip, we refinished the dining room, living room, and hall. Then on the second trip, we installed and finished the new wood, and refinished the bedroom. This method stretched the time out longer, but was the only way to do it in her situation. Member's existing floors were beautiful, tight grained, antique oak, and were well worth the effort it took to finish them. We look forward to comming back and doing the other two bedrooms when she is ready. ....Mike Ward

A furniture delivery company brought furniture into my home and created some grooves and scratches in my flooring (original to my 90-year-old house). Planet Hardwood did an excellent job of refinishing the floor and making the repairs. Now, my only problem is figuring out when I can have them refinish flooring in other parts of the house!

The Customer hired us to install bamboo flooring that he had purchased himself. As he stated, we showed up on time, and finished the work on schedual. For this, his rating is "C". Not sure how he came up with a "B" for price. If he didn't like the price he certainly never mentioned anything to me about it. after the job was complete and cleaned up, I met the Customer at the site to collect the check and she told me how beautiful it was. A "perfect" job she said. And there was not a single mention from the Customer at anytime about any dissatisfaction with the "quality" of our job. But still He gives a "C" for quality. The transition pieces that he is speaking of were not installed durring the floor installation because He failed to purchase them when he purchased the flooring. I was the one who brought it to his attention, and told him I would be happy to send my installer out to install, not only the piece on the bathroom doorway that we installed, but I would have him replace the badly done transition in the other bathroom doorway. FOR FREE! even though he forgot to purchase and provide the piece, and now i would have to send my guy back out to the house at additional expense to myself, I told him we would do it at no additional charge. So a couple days later he calls me and says he has the piece and I told him that my installer was tied up on a job we were doing out of town that week but I would try to get out there and do it myself. I missed the appointment. my fault. no excusees. It happens. We reschedualed for a time when my installer could come and do it. He was hit by a car on his motorcycle on his way home from work, missing the second appointment. I told the Customer this, and that I would do my best to get to it myself. It was a few days before Thanksgiving, my installer is in the hospital, I have my work to do, and now his as well, just to stay on schedual with jobs curently under way. So there it is. I missed schedualed appointments to put in a threshold for free, that he forgot to purchase and have available at the jobsite in the first place. I am guilty as charged and very sorry that it turned out the way it did. But It doesn't justify giving a C for punctuality after admitting himself that we were punctual. Nor is it accurate to give a "C" for quality when his wife thought the job was beautiful, and he himself stated it his review "Workers...did a good job". If there was anything about the job that was less than perfect, he never pointed it out to me. I am not perfect. my "workers" are not perfect. and in life, accidents will happen and mistakes will be made. In the abscence of my injured installer, I have worked 14 hour days for the last two weeks, including weekends, to maintain the promised scheduals I made to my customers. I think though that the Customerhas taken the threshold issue way out of proportion, and then used that to downgrade his rating of our job as a "punishment" to me for my missing his appointment. I can assure you that this is not our "normal" business practice and if there was anything I could do for Mr Brown to make him feel better, I would. Respectfully Mike Ward --- Owner

They did an excellent job. They are Bona Certified craftsmen, their system is dustfree, and the finish is beautiful. They matched the stain to existing hardwood floors and it was about perfect. The workers were very professional, and I could not be more pleased with the finished job. Also, they moved all the furniture back in after finishing the floors, carefully placing pads on each piece. It is great to have people that take such pride in their work!

Planet Hardwood was a breath of fresh air to work with. They were punctual, professional, and easy to work with. From the first meeting with them, to discuss the cost of the repairs, they were a pleasure to work with. They showed up on time and were dressed professionally. Additionally, their estimate was much lower than the other bids I had received from other local businesses. In a matter of hours they had finished my floors perfectly. The stain they used matched amazingly well and even to the trained eye the repaired area is nearly invisible. I am so thankful I chose to do business with them. In the future, they will be the only company I ever contact for all my flooring needs!!
