After purchasing our layout and deciding certain ways we wanted things in the house, it was a horrible experience from start to finish. The stress this caused me and my fiancé at the time was unbearable. Many things in our home were not as we had wanted and now we are forced to live with. Certain things in the home still don't work correctly. Our dishwasher was installed incorrectly and so every time it runs it vibrates against the tight cabinets and its the loudest noise you have ever heard. The garage door faces the wrong side of the house, which is something we specifically asked for when choosing the layout. We have to trucks and we didn't want them blocking the front of the home, which they now do anytime one of us parks in the driveway. We actually had workers that he had hired to build our home come over to our home up to months after we moved in asking for payments for services performed. We had an insulation man come and ask if he could take all his insulation back that he installed because Rod never paid him, we had to show proof that we paid Rod in full and what he did with those funds were unknown. When building the home Rod told us the air conditioning unit he had installed was stolen, come to find out he didn't pay them and so they came and took it back. The termite man that was hired upon start of the home being built was never paid and came back the following year trying to get funds from us. It has been an extreme headache for us from the start. We went to 3 different lawyers, explained everything to them and each was excited to take the case until they all found out that Rod & Lucy had so many claims already against them and that they were in so much debt already that we would never get a dime for any of the problems we encountered. We accepted that, and still to this day continue to fix things in the home one by one. It something a newly wed couple should never have never had to deal with. We filed a complaint with the state of home builders and they did agree with our case and took Rod Gattis building license away. This was the only thing that made some of this better was to know that he was no longer allowed to do this to people in the Huntsville area, however he is still building to this day and we are not sure if its illegally without a license or not.
Description of Work: Rod & Lucy Gattis were referred to us by our realtor, so we trusted her opinion. She had never actually built a home with him before she had just sold his previous homes built. We picked a layout and got started in April 2011 with the hopes of having our home built by that July in order to get the first time home buyers credit, plus we were getting married that October so we wanted to have it all ready. We got the loan from a bank and paid Rod in increments as the work progressed. Problems began almost immediately starting with behind deadlines, certain things we decided on in the home were not as we had discussed. Such as the direction of the garage door, the living room ceiling became flat instead of vaulted, the kitchen cabinets we had picked out were not the ones he installed they weren't even the same color we had chosen. We were told we would have hard wood floors, and we have the cheap panels that actually still bow when the changing of seasons start ect...We had several vendors explain to us that he would write them bad checks and so that's why certain pieces weren't getting ordered in time. We showed proof of all of our payments that went to him on time and came to realize he was using our money to pay back debts. Needless to say our two deadlines of closing on our home came and passed and we missed out on getting the first time home buyers credit of $8,000.00. We actually finally closed in October 2011 with our kitchen sink still not even installed. We have numerous problems that wont all fit in this area, but we would seriously discourage anyone who plans on using Rod or Lucy Gattis for their home building needs.
