Mr. Electric of Huntsville

My elderly mother called Mr. Electric to get a light installed over her garage door. Mr. Electric came out and told her they could do that but she needed her electric box relaced and they could do everything for $7000. My mother who has memory problems agreed to the service. After they installed the electric box and wired everything up then they told her that her hot water heater that she had installed a few years ago was not up to code because it was too close to the electric box they just installed but they could move it for her for another $5000. Unfortunately, mom paid for this too. I cannot believe there are humans who are so disgusting that they prey on little old ladies for a living. Please be very careful with these crooks because they have no conscious and will take you for every penny.

Didn't go so great. They contacted me quickly and came right over, they even seemed competent, but as soon as we started talking money, they got very coy and refused to give me any straight answers. Even though coming over and looking was supposedly free, I ended up paying them $225 for an analysis of the problem. He said he'd waive the analysis fee if I had the work done, but once he figured out what I should have done, that fee didn't get waived. He ended up wanting almost $600 to fix a light switch. Ridiculous! I paid him the money I had promised and kicked him out, then went back with a screwdriver and replaced the lightswitch myself. I felt like the company had spent many long hours training the workers how to sell up, how to present costs, and how to close the deal. I'm never using any company like that. Stop trying to wring money out of me. Fix my stuff and I'll pay you a fair rate for the effort.

It went excellent, very knowledgeable very helpful and I'm gonna used them again. I would definitely recommend them. The technician was awesome!

They provided a good service, but they're super expensive. They've com out twice and the second time they came out they amount they charged us was an exorbitance, they did a great job. I would use them again only if I were desperate because the price is really bad.

Excellent work. Timely high quality. Professional technicians. Cleaned up well. Only complaint is that the work seemed significantly overpriced, which I did not figure out until after the job was completed.

There were some weather delays, but everything went fine

They're pretty big in Huntsville. It was a lot of money. It was probably a $700 job for which they charged me $1500. They do that consistently. They were top of the yo-yo list. I always knew I was getting ripped off but I didn't know what to do about it. I found that out when I was redoing a house. I said wait a minute, these other people just did nearly the same thing and they charged me 30% less than these guys did. Their rates are ridiculous. I don't think they do lousy work. They just incredibly over charge for it. They had a real habit of telling me about things that needed to be done. It's sort of like when you get your oil changed from a mechanic that doesn't have enough work and it turns out you got 14 other problems with your car that you didn't know about. That's the other thing about them. No matter what the job was, there was always something else, according to them, that really, really, really, really needed to be done. That's what I didn't like. It was basically like a con man. As if you guys aren't charging enough already? They are bad about that. They won't tell you what they are going to charge until they show up. They're very punctual. They're johnny on the spot.

I have no complaints about them, they're really good.

The services were fine until time to pay. We called them 3 times in about a 10 day span. We had used their services before and they had been great and priced well. This time, my elderly father and I needed a fan put up, a bedroom overhead light changed out and some outlets and light switches replaced. Each time we called, they came out right away and did a great job. The person who did the work was very professional and seemed to know exactly what he was doing. But each time it was time to pay for the services, the sticker shock was unbelievable. Those 3 visits cost us over $2,200. For all 3 service calls combined, they could not have been here more than 2 hours combined. We truly feel that we were totally taken advantage of. I have done a lot of research since their last visit and no other electric company in the area charges anywhere near what they charged us for that little bit of work. We will never call them again and buyer beware. Make sure you get their pricing in advance, which was our mistake. They owe us a big apology and a refund.

They were fine. The price seemed like a lot for what they did. The best part was they came out quick. I would use them again.

I thought they were very good. They were kind of expensive but overall, they were pretty good.

They were open and honest that the appliance was still under manufacturer's warranty when they first came out. I was unable to get someone to come out following the manufacturer's directions, and when the warranty was out, I called Mr Electric back, and they resolved the problem in short order (they had to order a part), completing the repair in just a few days. Their charge was quite reasonable. I've had no further problems.

I called them to give me an estimate. (This was a few years ago, when we were doing a bathroom remodel.) They came on time, they were very professional, and their estimate was $2000.00!!!! I found a local electrician who ended up doing the job for $400.00 instead. I would not call them again, unless you had no other option and were prepared to overpay.

I had the Geek Squad over to hang a TV and was told that they do not do Electric work. I called Mr. Electric and they were able to send someone over. When he got here the Geek squad had been here for a couple of hours and needed the electric to finish the job. The Mr. Electric tech showed up and looked at what had to be done. When he told me the price was going to be over $500.00 I about gagged, but I was in a bind and had to bite the bullet. I told him to go ahead and do the job. He started to do the work and I happened to look at the clock to see what time it was as I was expecting a call. The tech came back in about 30 minuets and said that he was done. The guy shows me a bill for about $1200 dollars telling me that I needed GFE outlets in the laundry room. I told him no and he charges me the $550. Mr. Electric charged me over twice as much for a half hour job while he geek squad worked for 4 hours and did a lot more complicated work. I am in a new home and I had a neighbor come over and found that he was with the IBEW Electrician union and I told him what I paid and he said if I would have called the shop it would cost about $175 to $200 to do the same job. He went on to say that by code I really did not need GFE breakers in the laundry room.. I had called Mr. Electric before to get a quote on a simple job of adding smoke detectors and on that occation I got another electrician to do the job for much less. I thought it was a quirk, but I find out that it is the way they do business. Needless to say I will never call Mr. Electric again. I would not say that they are a rip off as they did do the job, but I will say that they are way overpriced and would advise anyone to call around before letting them do the job.

Update: Mr. Electric responded to me based on this review. They were able to review the work and invoice and corrected a few errors. They were very professional, courteous and apologetic. This restores my faith in Mr. Electric as a great company and one I will do business with again and will refer to others. I want to make sure other readers know that issue described below has been corrected and I highly recommend them as I have in the past. Old Issue My problem was I have all garage and outdoor plugs and lights on one GFI that kept flipping on me. I was hoping to split the daisy chain into two GFI circuits, one for the front and one the back and garage. I have used Mr. Electric many times over the years and have rated them highly until this service. The technician didn't seem interested in looking over the house to come up with a solution. I had to offer up ideas to him. He seemed more concerned about showing me pictures of his large house for sell and telling me about his family running Mr. Electric and his pull withing the company. After understanding the complexities of splitting the daisy chain and me offering up different solutions as opposed to the expert giving me options, I made one final request. Add one GFI circuit and drop a new plug into the garage to take the outdoor refrig off the outdoor gfi load. He said that would work, but would take a good bit of the day to do, plus he had to add the two lights I had purchased (which was just replacing current spot lights with new motion spot lights). So he quoted me $860. I was expecting him to be there 5/6 hours, so I thought was ok. I was amazed the next day when my wife called and he was done with all the work in 2 hours and 15 minutes. He did not reduce the cost to us at all. The only hardware cost would have been, the cable, GFI breaker and plug/box. Couldn't have been more than $150, leaving around $700 in labor for 2 hours worth of work. So I called the next day to speak with someone about this and try to get a better understanding. Well over a month has passed and I have never heard from them. I am very disappointed with them as again, I have used them several times and had a good idea about what the cost would be and have been very impressed with them. Not any more!

It went great. They did everything I was hoping for and then some. Polite and clean.

After my husband showed the gentleman what work we wanted done, we were given a quote of almost $3000!! The light install for the pantry alone was $1000 and almost $2000 for the exterior floods. We were absolutely shocked at that dollar figure. I expected maybe $1000 -- but almost 3 times that much? My father was a master electrician and I grew up watching him work on side jobs many times, so I know a little bit about the level of work related to what we were wanting done and there was NO way we were going to pay $3000 for it. I know I can find an independent electrician who will do the job as good or maybe even better and for much less. We will not be contacting Mr. Electric for any future electrical needs.

He was prompt, courteous, and carefully professional. We were pleased with the installation and the rapidity of installation.

It went very well. Showed up on time. Did work as promised. Did courtesy electrical inspection in other areas of home and made recommendations. Employees clean and well groomed. Easy to make/obtain an appointment in a reasonable amount of time. Would use them again.

I had a light in the stairwell that was non-functional. He rewired it and had it working within 30 minutes.

They were responsive and very fair in every way in replacing the fan with a satisfactory unit.
