Estimate was very timely and work was performed as represented. Mickey was very easy to deal with and the whole experience was good. I felt I paid a little more for the job than necessary, but felt good about the quality of work and the people I was dealing with.

First contact in January 2013-final contact in May 2013. these people are very pleasant to work with; however, the work was poor quality. They installed countertops in the kitchen of our 1920s home. The home had been well cared for and has excellent cabinetry. We sent a detailed drawing, with measurements, of where we wanted holes drilled for hardware - they drilled the holes improperly. They apparently cut one of the countertops too long, but forced it into place, and there is now a 1/4-3/8 inch gap between the lower cabinet and the wall as well as two holes in the wall immediately above the countertop, not to mention the stress on the wall from the granite countertop being forced in. They raised the counters almost two inches, though this appears excessive for leveling (former countertops appeared to be level, but we did not check, so don't really know for sure whether it was necessary to raise them that much). The new countertop was approximately one inch deeper than the old countertop and the countertop on one side of the stove was taller and deeper than the countertop on the other side. All of this caused issues with replacing the stove, which would not have been level if replaced and ultimately had to be raised by wooden blocks. They moved one side of the countertop out (leaving a gap in the back) and up somewhat curing the heighth and depth difference between the countertops on either side of the stove. There is a seam in the middle in front of the sink, which I understand from realtors, they have never seen done. It is a very visable seam. Because the countertops were raised, it was difficult to replace the electrical outlets. As a part of rectifying the problem with the mis-drilled holes, they suggested moving the switch for the garbage disposal to a hole in the countertop behind the sink. While attempting to hook up the garbage disposal, it appears that they disconnected (or otherwise caused not to work ) several other electrical outlets in the house - all of which worked immediately prior to the attempt to connect the garbage disposal. They did not complete this job and now there is just a hole where the button was to go. They did not even tighten down the faucet fixture. The initial installation took about a day, then they came back several times to attempt to rectify all of the issues over the course of about three months (February-May, 2013) Finally, we just gave up and paid them the balance of their charges (they required the majority of payment up front) We are left with countertops that are poorly installed, not even in heigth or depth, too high to work on if you are under 5'7and quot; tall, all of the electical outlets hanging out of the walls, a highly visable seam in front of the sink as well as a hole where the garbage disposal switch was to be placed, several non-working electical outlets, a gap between the counterbase and the wall and the countertop straining the wall, and facing the expense of completing the work and repairing the damage. For all of this stress, frustration, damage and future repair, I believe they gave us a $150.00 discount. The sales person was nice and tried to be helpful. I believe that he genuinely wanted to correct all of the problems, but he could not correct the poor workmenship. *note-I do not know exact construction date of our home, but it was built in the 1920s

Response from Coastal Stone & Cabinetry
We are always concerned when a customer is disappointed with the quality of our work because customer service is extremely important to us. Frequently remodeling projects do not go according to initial expectations. This is especially true for older properties. This customer's house is nearly 100 years old and the foundation had settled causing the floors to be unlevel and walls not plumb. Our proposal clearly stated the scope of work to be performed and we explained in advance in writing that the customer is responsible for ensuring that cabinets are plumb, level and square prior to installation of countertops. The customer wished to retain her existing cabinets so we referred her to a cabinet maker to make necessary adjustments. We regret that our shop did not drill the holes correctly. Our fabricators are very experienced craftsmen, but in spite of our best efforts, mistakes occasionally happen. Several options to correct the problem were discussed, including replacing the entire piece, which we offered to do. Our customer declined that offer, leaving less than ideal fixes. We made many trips to her home over a long period of time in good faith efforts to satisfy her concerns. This project was a 2nd home and the customer's primary residence is in another city approximately 250 miles away, making scheduling difficult. Our normal install takes 5-7 days from the date of templating. We are not licensed electricians or plumbers and accordingly we do not do wiring or plumbing under any circumstances, nor do we install or hook up appliances. This was also disclosed in advance to our customer. We did not do any wiring for this project. In an effort to address one hole, we did supply a drop-in button for the garbage disposal at no charge, but we did not install it, as the customer agree that she would have it installed. The customer selected dark granite. Seams are more visible in dark stone. The seam was placed at the sink because it is a short seam, as opposed to other possible seam locations that would be much longer. Contrary to the customer's comment, this practive is quite common, especially when there are long runs of stone, which make the narrow piece in front of the sink susceptible to stress and fracture. We regret that in spite of the all the time and effort we put into this project we failed to satisfy our customer, however, we are quite confident that the difficulties encountered in this project, with the exception of the improperly drilled holes, were due to the inadequacies of the older property and the existing cabinetry and were not due to poor workmanship.

I called Coastal and talked with Preston Childress and he schedule an appoint to look at our kitchen the next day and he showed up on time. They worked with us on different types of granite until we found the one that suited us. We picked out the tile a couple of days later and they gave us a start date that was suitable for us. They called a few days later and told us they could start earlier and they did. Everyone that we dealt with was personable and professional and that includes the gentleman that measure the counter tops, the folks that installed the granite and the gentleman that installed the tile. Preston Childress and Mickey Ladd were a pleasure to deal with. I asked Preston for a recommendation on a plumber that he had worked with to hook up the water and garbage disposal and he gave me a good one.
Description of Work: Coastal removed tile from kitchen counter tops, kitchen island and back splash. Counter tops were replaced with granite and back splash was replaced with travertine tile and a new sink was installed.
