Isaac, from White Shovel Landscaping, was prompt and accurate with the proposal and estimate.  Chris and his team, arrived at about 8:00 am on the agreed upon date.  They worked diligently and finished work the same day.  The garden they created is beautiful and my wife and I are extremely pleased with the results.  Their guarantee - 5 years - is unheard of.  We've had landscaping done by other contractors in our area but they cannot hold a candle to White Shovel.  They are truly exceptional and we will certainly use their services again.

I was very happy with them.  They did a great job.  They were very professional, reliable, prompt and cleaned up very well.  I have nothing but good thigs to say about them.  We live in an area that a lot of companies will not come out to, so it was great to find such a good one that does service our area.  I would highly recommend them.

White Shovel Landscaping arrived on schedule and surveyed the area requiring mulch. Their (very) rough estimate indicated I would need nine yard of mulch to adequately cover the beds. Having done this same job myself several times, I knew the estimate was too high. Each extra yard was only $45, so I wasn't too concerned if a few additional yards might be required.
They arrived on time for the scheduled service and did a great job of distributing the mulch. They were very meticulous and the finished job looked great. The amount provided in the prepaid deal was perfect for my landscaping. If this deal is offered in the future, I will definitely take advantage of it. For slightly more than the cost of the mulch purchased in bulk, I got it installed. It is a great value.

"We thank you so much for your review, and I am glad the rough estimate fulfilled your expectations. Look for this deal next year around July it is a slow month in the company and a great time to take advantage of theses types of deals. I would love to hear from you about how we can do better with our professionalism. The team looks forward to working with you in the future. Thank you for your interest in our company."

"Thank you so much for your review, it has been an honor to serve you. All of our designers are thoroughly trained and monitored with detailed reports written for each appointment. We pride ourselves in being on the cutting edge of landscape design. The only Stock plants that we work with is having to do with stock that is available from local nurseries. We try our hardest not to order plants from outside North Alabama's growing zone as they do not adapt well with even a smaller change in climate, and it is one of the many reasons outside of quality that we are able to offer our record breaking 5 year warranty on our installed plants. Thank you for your interest in our company. I hope that you can forgive us for the misunderstanding. The team would be honored to serve you again."

They have been professional for the most part. We had designed the landscaping around several fruit trees, but it turned out that I had to do my own searching for the fruit trees, and that part wasn’t completely up front. The nursery I had to go to was half an hour away. I feel like the person who came out for the consultation could have been clearer about this. Everything went as scheduled, excluding weather delays.
Response from White Shovel Landscapes
"Thank you so much for your review, we look forward to hearing from you about how we could do better. While we are poised for growth and would love to add areas like food bearing plants to our research and designs unfortunately popular demand does not allow us to profitably extend into these types of designs because of the maintenance required to keep up these types of plants. However I am glad that our expertise was helpful as to what types of fruit bearing plants would do well in our growing zone. One major reason for not supplying these types of plants is our ability to provide a 5 year warranty on fruit bearing trees would not be profitable for you or the company. Thank you for your interest in our company, I hope that we can meet your expectations in the future. It has been an honor serving you."

Our first contact was with Isaac the design planner, and he was terrific. We knew that we wanted to do "something" but we were not sure what that something was. Isaac helped us formulate a plan and a vision for the work. We were provided with computer generated pictures using our yard to show what the project would look like after the work was completed. This was so helpful! Then the work began. Mike the project supervisor met with us frequently, and was always good to stay in contact with us when schedules or plans needed to change. When it came time, Angel, the Plant Lady, came to help me with all the difficult choices to be made selecting plantings for my new beds. She took me far and wide in search of the best. When one of our selections didn't work out as planned Angel went way above and beyond to find the best replacement for us, making a 40 mile round trip drive just to find a matching tree. All the employees we had at our house were wonderful. They were diligent, careful, polite, honest and paid close attention to detail. The work area was always left tidy even though the work might not be finished at the end of the day. Everyone tried hard to please us and would often ask us for guidance on questions that arose during the work. From beginning to end all work was completed with excellence. This was a complex multi part project, and it all came together beautifully! White Shovel is a family owned and operated business and they work hard to provide excellent service. I feel like I have found a true gem in the landscaping world! We are so pleased that we are already considering another project.

"Thank you so much for your review, you are truly a wonderful client. This was such an incredible project to work on and we so enjoyed working with you in every aspect. I can't describe how excited the crew was to see the finished work, I always know that they enjoy their labor when they see the finished work and celebrate another job well done. The team looks forward to working with you again in the future. Have a great time in your new courtyard Ms. [member name remove]."

Very professional and customer service oriented. We are already looking forward to using them again for another area of our yard.

Update:  I had several bushes die over the winter and I contacted the warranty department on May 8.  I was told that same day that my claim would be forwarded to the project manager and he would give me a call asap.  Four days later (May 12) I had not heard back so I inquired about the status and was told (that same day) I would receive a call within the next two weeks.  This concerned me because of the 7 or so bushes that had died, a few more were looking bad and even though I had been promised maintenance training when the landscaping was installed, I had never recieved any and I wanted advice to save the rose bushes.

When I still had not heard from them by May 16, I responded on with "Ok but it should be noted that more things appear to be dying that maybe could be saved with sooner attention. "

I received this reply from the owner on May 16:

Kim,

I apologize for your frustration, however the warranty covers plants that have died, it is your duty to care for the plants, help them to live, we are not responsible for trying to help your plants grow better.

It concerns me that you have waited this long to turn in the invoice for repairing the irrigation.

Am I to understand that the plants have gone an entire year with our the irrigation system?

Also, your review on Angies list is devastating to our company, I see it as completely unprofessional.

It is your choice however, there is still no way of speeding up the process or getting to you any sooner.

Also the repairs of your edging cannot be done through our company, we will be only replacing the dead plants.

Mike

I dont see how my original review was devastating to the company, or unprofessional.  I never even mentioned the trouble I had with the irrigation system that he installed for me, even though I had complained to the company that it leaked at the source so badly that I couldnt turn it on.

On May 18 when I got home from work, I had new bushes to replace the dead ones.  No call, nothing about the obviously distressed rose bushes with no leaves, no email, nothing.

I was really apprehensive about spending over $4000 on landscaping because I am not familar with taking care of rose bushes (although I have another one that I planted and pretty much ignore and it is thriving), but I was assured during the "sales" process that someone would be contacting me to show me how and when to trim the bushes and to care for them.

One year later and I now regret doing business with this company.

Excellent. They arrived based on weather, worked the full time and completed everything within a very reasonable amount of time. They checked in with me to make sure i was satisfied with the progress and the final clean up was great. The last walk through allowed me to ask quesitons on watering, and expected growth and cutting patterens for the future.
Communication was excellent!
I can fully recommend While Shovel for outstanding work and a quality product.

I should have realized they weren't quite an A when the assessor identified my blooming daffodils as day lilies.  He assured me they'd be able to transplant all five foundation plantings but it turned out that only three were able to be transplanted.  Their supervisor did do an outstanding job with a bobcat / small dozer getting out a couple of tree stumps without harming brickwork.  A 1 day job stretched into 3 days.  I had to buy 2 new plants which increased the cost of the job over $300 (+16%).  There was a communication issue about the trellis and what they thought was adequate, which meant multiple purchases from Lowe's / Home Depot.  They did not water the transplanted items and did not mist or water the plants that they had sitting out for a day or two.  One of my sprinkler heads was buried when they replanted a monkey grass over it.  Expect to have to direct them closely.

"Somehow I feel the need to write a book. So let me tell you a story about a lady that loves plants. Upon arriving on site for the first time, and after a formal greeting, we proceeded to talk about the shrubs and plants that were in her current landscape. My first reaction seeing ginormous Arborvitae planted almost on her foundation, was that I recommend a full removal of current plants and trees. In my experience trees, that large, planted that close to the foundation isn't good. Also she had brick edging that was just as close to the trees as the house was, and the edging was 10 inches tall, and mortared into place. Upon further talking with her about removing them, I realized that these trees meant a lot to her. So against my better judgement we agreed to attempt to transplant them to the back yard. Since the trees were so close to the house, no heavy equipment could be used to remove them. And after 2-3 hours of 4 hardworking guys removing the soil around the trees and carefully cutting roots, we realized the roots were just to big, and we couldn't go out far enough to cut them, because of the edging and the house. So a phone call was placed over to this nice lady. Not easy to admit that we either take out the edging, or house, or trees! I asked her to take a close look at the roots we were about to cut, and make a decision on whether or not she thought the transplants would take. She reluctantly agreed that they needed to be taken out, and disposed of. I told her that we would need to bring a Mini Excavator in to grab them from the top and pull up on them while we cut the roots, to ensure no damage was done to her home, or edging. Then we began talking about what she wanted to plant, instead of the trees we were now removing. I told her that I could have someone at the nursery identify the exact tree that she had, walk her around and help her pick out new trees. I also told her to get the biggest ones they had, and I would give her the wholesale ticket to pay only. This allowed her to pick out larger trees. The total for these trees at wholesale price was 316 dollars. After she picked them out, we went to the nursery picked them up and installed them. The crew pulled off the job the first day in order to allow time for her to pick out new trees. The next morning she picked them out at 9:30, the crew arrived at 9:00 to remove and the trees were picked up and planted. The next thing was her trellis, unfortunately the material that she purchased, for installing the trellis, wasn't adequate to hold the trellis in place. So after a few suggestions she insisted that she pick out the wood that would be used. So she picked it out and purchased it, and because of the length of the wood, we sent a truck by Home Depot to pick it up for her. Then we installed the trellis on the 3rd day in the morning. This wonderful lady had a very difficult time letting those trees go, we did everything we could to save them, and we still could have moved them, had she wanted us to. I tell people often plants are living things, they struggle to survive and and thrive in good area's that meet their needs. I know this was tough for her, and I wish her the best. At least now her new trees will be able to grow unrestricted in their new home. :) From the White Shovel Team, thank you for your business, and your review."

They were crappy.  They're wonderful people, very punctual but they're not buying the landscaping plan.  I wouldn't hire them.  Their price is outrageously high.  Nobody agrees with their plans,  we had problems in the plans; they're in the wrong order and the way they needed to be arranged and how they would grow so they took pictures and would look pretty but it won't grow right.
Response from White Shovel Landscapes
"This review is very confusing! I want to just go ahead and address important issues. I think the first one on here is that our price being stated "outrageously high". Just like with any other service you are perfectly free to get other estimates if you like. White Shovel has never claimed to be the cheapest landscape company in town, we strive to offer the highest quality installation, and design services in North Alabama. However if you were to get several estimates on your project and design services we are confident that you would find our prices fairly priced, and very reasonable. As always, we wish to thank everyone for participating in the review process that Angie's list so wonderfully offers. This process helps us to improve our service and to be better for each new client that we service. :)"

Once we set a date they arrived on time and with many men and began the work work. They chacked with my wife and I often to ask question and be sure they were doing what we wanated. They worked all day and stopped for darkness. The leader said he would be back in the morning to finish the last bed and tidy up. They arrived again on time and when finsihed we walked around to go over everything one more time. I said they had exceeded our expentations by far. The nect morning the owener called me and wanted to set up a time so he could walk through with me. I told him that was not necessary, I could not be more satisfeid. If you want an all American team with each person being higly trained in their field, at a cost you like, and service to outdo anyone in the filed...these are your guys and gals. Steve
