I called Morris plumbing to get a quote on replacing the service pipe (from meter to house) on rental property with old galvanized pipes. His quote was $800.00. When I asked how much to re-pipe the entire house and also replace the service pipe, the cost was $1800.00 for everything, with a 3% charge for using a credit card for payment, making the total $1,854.00. I agreed & had to wait one week for him to start the job. A week later, he & his crew came at 8:30 a.m. and I asked for a written description of work to be done. We had discussed 3/4" Pex from meter to water heater, a 3/4" main hot from water heater with 1/2" Pex to all fixtures. We had also discussed the possibility that the main service may have already been replaced and would not be necessary to replace. Morris was to inspect the service pipe to determine if it was galvanized. I wanted all this in writing. Anthony agreed to put everything in writing. I asked him if he pulled a permit for the work and he said he didn't know that I wanted a permit. He said if I wanted a permit it would cost me an extra $40.00. I told him that I thought permits were required for a re-pipe but if they were not required then that's fine. He said in Decatur he didn't need a permit except for new construction. When I received his estimate, it said all work was warrantied for 90 days. I told him industry standard was one year. That's when he told his guys to stop digging. I asked if he could give me a one year warranty. No. How about 180 days? No. I told him that Roto Rooter and all other plumbers had quoted a one year warranty. He said for me to call Roto Rooter then. I told him that every other quote I received had a one year warranty. He said, "Well, call them." I told him I'd already spent 2 weeks getting quotes & then had waited a week on him so I needed to get this done today. I'd go ahead and take the 90 days warranty but I would get the work inspected afterwards. That's the FIRST time he tried to run away. He said he didn't want an unhappy customer and he should just leave. I was incredulous. I said, "I'm not unhappy. I just want to get an inspection since your work is only guaranteed for 90 days." He agreed to stay & do the work and they started back up. Next. we discovered the water service pipe had already been replaced with PVC. I ask how much for work without a new $800.00 service pipe? The answer: $1600.00, only $200.00 off. I reminded him of his quote for the service pipe was $800.00. "Can you come down to $1400.00?" No. "How about $1500.00?" No. "Okay, I'll pay the $1600.00. I really need to get this done today." That's when Anthony decided to run away for real. He told me they were leaving because I was "unhappy." I was incredulous because I'd agreed to the $1600.00. He said he was leaving anyway. I told him he must have a lot of work to turn down a $1600.00 job. He said they do have a lot of work and left. He totally wasted a week of my time. Good thing he didn't get a chance to waste my money too. I think the REAL reason Morris wanted to leave is because A PERMIT FOR RE-PIPE IS REQUIRED. He knew I was going to get his work inspected when I found out he only offered a 90 day warranty. That would alert the City that he was working in Huntsville without pulling permits. I know a permit is required because I called both the Huntsville AND Decatur Inspection Departments. Decatur has a "Sub-Trades Permit" and for my job, the fee would have been $40.00. The lady knew Anthony Morris & I told her he said he does not get permits in Decatur except for new construction. She said, "Anthony knows better," & would have the plumbing inspector call him to discuss. Huntsville verified a permit was required for this job. In addition to getting a permit, if you hire a plumber, CHECK THEIR LICENSE with the state. You want them to have a Master Plumber (MP) on-board. Ask them the name of the MP and who will do the work. If the MP won't personally do the work, ask for the names of the people who will do the actual work. Then get on the Alabama website listed below to check their licenses (they're all listed by name). Also, call the City to determine any permits needed. The permit cost should be part of the quote for the work. Also ask to see their insurance papers. Here are the numbers & web addresses for Inspection & licenses. State of Alabama plumber licensing. http://www.pgfb.state.al.us/Inquiry.aspx (205) 945-4857 Huntsville Inspection & Permits http://www.hsvcity.com/inspection/ 256-427-5336 Decatur Inspection & Permits http://www.decaturalabamausa.com/departments/buildingdept/index.html (256) 341-4570 This cost me a week of useless waiting for nothing. I had no idea Morris would not pull a permit. So I am going to call Roto Rooter. In fact I already have. The one positive in all this is Anthony Morris does have a current MP license. However, I knew that before he came out. I guess he's just too lazy or cheap to get a permit. Sad...
Description of Work: VERY UNPROFESSIONAL! ANTHONY MORRIS DOESN'T PULL REQUIRED PERMITS!

This is a one-man company, which is the kind of provider I like to work with. His company is accredited by the BBB. The company is in Decatur, but he does work in Madison. Mr. Morris was friendly, competent, and professional. Initially my appointment was 10AM on Monday, but he did not show. When I called him, he apologized and said he was tied up on a big job and he would be there first thing the next day. He did show up by 9AM the next day, Tuesday. He did a good job installing the faucet and fixing the shower leak. He took care to clean up any mess. He wore covers over his shoes to avoid tracking in dirt. I was satisfied with the price. I plan to use him again in the future.
Description of Work: Installed new kitchen faucet. Fixed leak in single handle shower control.
