Early this year I had some water damage and gutted my kitchen to the studs, even the tile and backer board came up. The cabinet and counter company that designed my kitchen said it would be cheaper if I got a local flooring company to do the tile. On a Saturday the only floor companies I could find open were Lowe?s and O.F. Richter and Sons Cullman, AL. The tile found at O.F Richter and Son?s complemented the new counter tops. They sent a guy to measure my kitchen and capture any concerns I had. My house had settled and I asked the guy doing the measurements if the ridge on the floor could be sanded and/or a leveling compound could be used. I told him I needed the floor company?s opinion as I had already called a house jack company and if that is what it needed then I wanted it done right. He said he would write that in his notes and the installer would work on that. On his way out he asked if I was taking up the sub-floor or if they were doing it. I said I was not doing it. I didn?t think this very odd as the old vinyl was still on the floor. On the install day my wife greeted the installer. He walked around a bare kitchen with new sheetrock as a blank canvas. He looked at the threshold between the kitchen and hallway. The hallway is red oak hardwood. He asked if the kitchen floor was level with the hall. My wife said it was. When she got home the threshold had a step of about 5/8 of an inch. I was out of town so she took picture using a dime as a guide. As I was out of town I sent them a picture expressing my dislike. They basically replied with oh-my. I called the cabinet and counter top installers and they said it would be 5 or 6 weeks before I could reschedule the install. After having been without a kitchen for 3 months I reluctantly consented to the current plan. O.F. Richter and Son?s didn?t bother to offer to fix it and they didn?t say or point out the second and third order of effects to this nor did I understand what was about to happen to my kitchen. After I got home I made O.F. Richter and Son?s representatives and the installer come to my house. They had a half baked plan for a transition. With the installer again on the floor crawling around as if it would magically fix itself if he got closer to it. When the installer came back to do the thresholds to the hallway, living room and den he pointed out that when the trim and baseboards are put on the kitchen will not be even with the hallway. This is something they should have pointed out long before that day. When the threshold install was done I told the guy I didn?t like it and the transitions to the den and living room were tall and would not let me put hardwood in the those rooms without having a messed up transition like the hallway. Two weeks ago (18 OCT 2014) I took pictures to O.F. Richter and Son?s. They said they would work on a solution. I also took a picture of what the transition between the tile carpets should look like. I did this when a friend that runs a Construction Company (He has a Building Science Degree from Auburn University) told me the metal thresholds used were the cheapest money could buy. I am accustomed to a 5/16 reducer or that is the best I can figure out from research. As for the settling of my house and the floor being uneven: The installer said he got it as level as he could. I asked if a leveling compound was needed or used he said no. The guy that put my baseboard on showed me that the floor drops almost an inch and a half. I wonder if they worked on that at all. DO NOT use O.F. Richter and Son?s. They have three locations: O.F. Richter & Sons Cullman, AL Decatur Decorating Center Decatur, AL Jasper Decorating Center Jasper, AL We otherwise have a beautiful kitchen designed and constructed by Counter Dimensions out of Pelham, AL
