We started using Wilbur's Plumbing in 2011 and continued into 2012 for the various plumbing problems we had in the neighborhood. We are a group of townhomes. When we first started using them they were reasonable on their rates, but as we started calling them on a return basis, they started escalating their rates and started using creative accounting for the time they actually spent on a job and the work that actualy needed to be done. We are no longer using them because of this reason.

[member name removed], I don't find an account under your name but I do remember your Town homes. I remember several years ago we came out and were told one of the owners could get a better price on the work we had quoted up front. As far as your comment about creative accounting, all of our prices are the same for everyone, the Technicians look up each job in our price book prior to doing any work. The only time the prices change is when we have a change in cost. Our book is based on the average time it takes to preform the task plus materials, labor, overhead and a 10% profit.

As I said above the work was excellent. I call Wilbur’s about 1:30 pm. The lady that answered said they would have someone come out between 8 and 9 am the next day. She asked if they needed to call before arriving. I said no; I would be waiting. 8:30 the next day the tech arrived. He asked what the problem was. I told him the original problem was the clogged drain and about two other problems. We then looked at each problem so he could get an idea of the work. He then told me the firm price of each job. He said he could do two job today and needed a helper for the third. I agreed on the jobs and each price. He started working on each in progression. He finished the clogged drain then the sump pump. Each price is by task not by hour. He did not hurry and he was not slow. It took about four hours to complete the two jobs. In case you’re interested my dog liked him. I signed for the work completed that day and he said he would be back first thing the next day. True to his word first thing next day he was there. But there was a problem with the drain work. He could not complete the work. He explained why and calked around the drain to patch the leak. He did not charge for the next day visit and we completed the transaction. Work performed was excellent.
Description of Work: Originally, I called Wilbur’s because my wife flushed some burnt food down the garbage disposal and stopped up the kitchen. While the repair man was there I had him look at two other problems. The drain in the master bath was leaking and the sump pump in the basement bathroom had stopped working. The kitchen sink had a very stubborn cloak. The plumber tried to dislodge the cloak with an air gun but that did not work. So he had to dismantle the pipes under the sink and use a pipe cleaning machine to clear the clog. He also tighten and cleaned the facet (a nice extra). Price: $339. The reason the sump pump was not working was a broken switch that told the pump to start running. Of course the tech had the part on his truck. He actually had to take the pump top off to replace the switch. Price: $401. He needed a helper to replace the pipe / drain for the master bath. The drain was over the garage so there was no damage to the house from the leak. He said he would be back the next day to finish the job. As he promised first thing the next day he was there with a helper. But after starting to work he found that the drain was for a tile bath and ours is a marble bath. So more work (marble work) was needed than he could perform because of the marble work. He caulked around the leak but did not charge anything for the drain. The quoted price was $470 but work was not performed.. So the price for two jobs was $740. I bought the $200 coupon for $111. I used the coupon and paid him $540. The work was excellent. I cannot say one bad word about anything involving the work performed. I gave a grade of C for price. Wilbur’s is not cheap. I assumed a grade of C for the price was average. My personal feeling was the price was a little steep. Maybe you get what you pay for? I would certainly recommend them with the warning that they are not bargain plumbers. The quality of work was more important to me than price so I would use them again. Again, let me say I was very pleased with the work.

The installation of the new faucets and plumbing assembly was perfect. They supplied all of the necessary parts except the faucets. They were very considerate, wearing overshoes to prevent tracking dirt on the floors. They were prompt. They arrived at the appointed time and they were courteous and professional. They cleaned up the mess that occurred while installing the new plumbing. They honored the Angie's List Groupon deal and deducted the specified amount from the total bill. They explained the cost of the service prior to beginning the job and they used high quality parts on the under sink plumbing and provided the new drain assemblies. After they left, we discovered a slight problem with the leaky shower that they had repaired. When we turned the shower from the faucet to the shower, only about half of the water was diverted to the shower. Apparently, one of the replacement parts had a flaw which prevented the full diversion of the water to the shower head. They returned the next day, took everything apart, reassembled it and determined that a replacement part is needed. They ordered the new part and are scheduled to replace it tomorrow. As stated above, the work comes with a guarantee and they have been very responsive in resolving the problem. Wilbur's did everything that they could to resolve the problem with the shower diverter but unfortunately the company that manufactured the original plumbing was sold to another company and that company's replacement part does not work properly in the old original plumbing. Wilbur (owner of the company) became involved and contacted several companies to try to obtain a replacement part that worked properly. He sent out his technician twice to try new parts. Wilbur called us personally to give us updates while he was searching for the replacement part. Although the problem was not resolved 100%, the most recent replacement part diverts almost all of the water now instead of just diverting half of the water. There is a small trickle that does not get diverted. The only possible 100% resolution would be to pull ot all of the old original plumbing and replace the whole shower plumibing assembly. That would involve tearing out a bedroom wall. We have opted to just live with the small trickle instead of tearing up a a wall. In my opinion, Wilber and his technicians did everything humanly possible to try to satisfy us. These people genuinely take pride in their work and they care about doing a good job. I should also note that the leak issue was resolved 100% on the original service call.
Description of Work: Wilbur's Plumbing installed new faucets and rebuilt the plumbing assembly and drain traps for two new sinks; one in the kitchen and another in a bathroom vanity. They also repaired a leaky faucet in a shower. It should be noted that the shower was original plumbing from 1979.

The pipe leading to my refrigerator ice maker kept freezing, causing water to drip into the refrigerator. The house was build in 1967, before the invention of icemakers, I believe, so the first person to install the ice maker didn't think to put an on/off valve on that particular pipe. IF something went wrong, we had to turn off all the water to the house to correct it. Wilbur's serviceman cut the pipe, installed an easy on/off valve and corrected the leaking issue. Plus, now we don't have to turn all the water off to correct a small issue with an icemaker.
Description of Work: Needed a new on/off valve for a water pipe leading to the ice maker in my refrigerator. Repairman did the repairs in no time flat and was very courteous and professional. He did a great job. I would definitely recommend Wilbur's to anyone.

The day of the estimate they ran late, but because they did, they waived the service call fee. John Michael was very courteous, he took pictures of the plumbing under the house. He gave me two estimates, one was a short term fix, the other a long term fix. I chose the long term fix. The second time they came they were very prompt and had the plumbing done in a very short period of time.

They were very responsive. They had a cancellation, so they sent someone out the morning after I contacted them via e-mail. The job was fine. The leaking water into my bowl happens no longer. They gave me the price before the work. However, my options were limited since I had already purchased the "Big Deal" and they would charge a trip charge ($49) anyway. My problem is the price. I bought a "Angies Big Deal" coupon. The actual cost to me was $190; $290 is the retail cost they charged before the coupon. I called a few plumbers after I did the deal since it seemed so high. The closest I could find was a quote of $170 for a similar job, but the average was about $130. They charged $240 for the toilet and $50 for the trip charge. Once I told the guy to go ahead, it took him about 15 minutes. Assuming the parts cost $40, that is $800/hour for work.

Member, Thanks for taking time to express your feelings, I would like to respond to your comments. It appears your only issue is price. Yes we have a trip charge to send you a plumber (average travel 35 minuets) with a truck stocked with inventory to perform 90% of any repair or service our customers need ($75,000 Inventory). Which I would have gladly waived or refunded the $49.00 had you requested. I understand the math you used to come up with $800.00 per hour, but my technician was clocked out to your job from 8:15 to 10:00, so he was 1 hour and 45 minuets devoted to your call not just the 15 Minuets you used to come up with $800.00 per hour. As I explained when I responded to your email I tried being the cheap company, but found that was equal to cheap services. For sure we are not the least expensive service company out there, on the other hand we are not the most expensive either. Our goal is to provide the best customer service and parts, clean work area, drug free and back ground checked employees, continuing education and training for employees, honest diagnosis, and options when available, good warranties all with the least inconvenience to our customers.

The service was excellent. They checked out our heater and found there was some debris in there. After they cleaned out all of the debris, the issue seemed to be resolved. They did a good job and at a very reasonable price as well. I appreciated how they did not try to upsell us or pressure us into any other jobs. They were on time, professional, and able to pin point the issue immediately. I would recommend them.

do not hire these people. they told me the water heater in one of my rental units was broken and wanted to charge $1,400+ to install it! the replacement water heater costs $360 so the install was roughly $1,000 (they were also supposed to unclog a drain which they didn't do but tried to charge me for any way). I called my handyman (who wasn't available originally to go fix the water heater). he checked it out and told me there was nothing wrong with the water heater. my tenant confirmed that turning up the heat a little solved the problem. my handyman then fixed the clog. if you're not familiar with the process of putting in a new water heater, I'll tell you that it's a little more difficult than putting gas in your car. they wanted to charge approx. $1000 to do it because I was out of town and they thought they could get away with it. I would never ever hire them again.
Description of Work: we called them to check out a water heater that my tenant said wasn't working (said the water wasn't getting hot enough). there was also a clogged drain that was making water back up into the dish washer).

this is a copy of my letter to respond to your phone message. we never told you you had to replace the water heater it was only an option. 11/1/12 Re; ***** Dear Member, After reviewing your service call, my dispatchers report and talking to my Technicians that were on your job, I feel there must have been some communication problems. On our observation sheet that is filled out on the job and gives options for solutions (copy enclosed). It says the water heater is functioning, is very old and my technician said he told you it may have settlement in it which may account for the lack of hot water. He offered to clean the sink drain at no charge if the water heater was replaced for 1021.00 with an option on an expansion tank. Lacy said you referred to charging 1500.00 to install a water heater that cost 300.00. The 1500.00 tells me my technician did not explain himself very well, that is not the price for our water heater. Also the 300.00 is below our cost on a low boy electric water heater. Also I questioned my men about the sink drain. It was only backing up on the disposer side, the tenant explained she doesn’t use it. With this situation we always try to plunge the line and run the disposer before charging full price of running a cable down the line, which we did and this opened up the drain. I even had my dispatcher call the tenant back and ask if it was still backing up and she said no it was draining. Again there are some communication errors in all the info I am hearing about the drain. I understand you are used to having a Handy man do repairs for you. We cannot compete with him. We have different overheads like Licenses, trade cards, insurance liability and workers compensation, truck inventory, etc… I am sorry you have had a bad experience with my company, there will be no charge for the service call 10/30/12. I will use your input to coach my team in better customer service. If you have something your handyman can not handle please call and ask for me, I would like an opportunity to show you the positive side of how we do things, a free diagnostic and estimate. Sincerely, Wilbur Doonan

I called Wilbur's to schedule a service call for repair to a shower and kitchen faucet leak. They were scheduled for the afternoon and did not show up, called after the appointment time. Scheduled for the next day and they showed up ten minutes after the appointment window closed. This was important to us as I had explained that my son had to leave by a certain time to make a class at UAB. The service technician "repaired" the kitchen faucet ( I will deal with Wilbur's on their guarantee after the issue is resolved on their charges. The technician also repaired the bathroom shower. I was then advised that the water pressure regulator was bad and needed replacement. It was "replaced", again I will address this issue with Wilbur's as each time the water is turned on in the kitchen or the bathroom, it is very forceful and then returns to a normal flow. My issue with this company is that I paid $881.00 for less than 90 minutes in my house. When I asked (in writing) for an itemization of labor, parts and service call, I was told they didn't do itemizations. When I responded (again in writing) that I had never used another service company either at home or where I work that didn't provide an itemization. Their response this time was a list of all their services and a "package" price for that service. I responded if that was the case then each service include travel time and an assumed amount of labor. At the very least I feel that I am owed a refund for two travel charges. I will not use them again. I feel that you shouldn't use anyone who will not itemize their service.
Description of Work: Kitchen faucet leaked. Not leaking, but when used and when sprayer is used, still sqeals. Bathroom shower could not be turned off.

Customer thank you for your input . Our call record shows I took you call that Thursday at 1:08, my notes reflect your son would be home after 3:00, that we would try to get to it then, if not would call and reschedule for Friday after 12:00 when your son would be home again. It shows we did have to call and reschedule for Friday . We arrived at 3:45 PM and completed the call at 5:00 PM Thank you for your letters which I have responded to all three, the last only last week when you expressed for the 1st time that the price was your issue. I did send you a partial refund. No we are not a time and material company that charges based on how slow or fast the plumber is plus materials. Our work is priced by the task and prices are given prior to the work being done. If your technician is slow or his trucks inventory is not adequate you don’t pay extra for our mistakes the price stays the same. Our prices reflect 33 years of experience to average the labor for a task plus materials, overhead and hopefully a ten percent profit before taxes. If you are having problems all you have to do is call our office, we always honor our warranties.

It went very well. I was impressed with the plumbers that came, they were very friendly and gave me options on ways to save money - fixing the old faucets in the bath tub. I wanted to use the new one's that i had bought so they would match the sink, so i paid the extra $$$. They gave me my opitions ($$$), which I appreciated.

The service went well. The person who returned my phone call was polite, and assured me that the service technician would contact me when he would be available. He called promptly and came as promised. The work was thorough, and the technician was professional and competent. I would use this compary again.
Description of Work: The toilet valve broke and flooded my bathroom on a Saturday afternoon. I left a message on the company voice mail and they returned my call promptly. The technician arrived when he said he would, and explained what had happened to the toilet. He had to rebuild the flush mechanism. He gave me two choices for the replacement parts: a cheaper plastic replacement part with a 6 month warranty, or a more expensive, metal part with an 18 month warranty. I chose the more expensive repair, partly for the longer warranty. The technician was prompt, knowledgeable and polite. He was able to do the repairs in a timely manner. I was very pleased with the service on a weekend and would definitely use them again.

I called Wilbur's plumbing to schedule someone to come out and look at our garbage disposal, which was broken. I was told that diagnostics would be about 50 dollars, someone would come out between 1 pm and 4 pm, and would call half an hour prior to coming. I took off of work and sat at my home for those three hours, and no one came. Finally at 3:30 I called Wilbur's and spoke to another person to said they weren't sure what happened, but they didn't even see my name on the schedule. The second person on the phone was nice enough and offered to have someone come out but it would at least an hour. At that point, I was very frustrated at having taken time off work, and had errands that needed to be run and wasn't willing to sit there any longer. Apparently whatever system they have for scheduling clients needs some work. I will not be attempting to use them again

The experience was great overall! They would’ve been able to come out the same day that I called, but I wasn’t able to, so they came out the next day. The workers were polite and careful, covering their shoes and were considerate, too. Their price is comparable with other companies. Everything went well.
Description of Work: Most recently, they repaired my air conditioning unit.
