The initial charge to diagnose the problem was around $275, $79 for the service call and the rest to run a system leak check which ended at the evaporator coil. They did honor the $50 A.L. coupon. Labor + Freon + minor extra parts (dryer, copper, etc.) for the replacement came to almost $1000. It took 2 men ~4 h to replace it. They charge $110/hour for labor and I don't know if that is for 1 or 2 fellows. However, they billed me according to a "flat rate" fee which they say is an "average" of their costs for similar jobs. It was not clear from the bill exactly what labor v. parts. v. Freon came to. I originally paid $4000 to have the entire compressor and air handler/furnace installed, but the fellow was a friend of mine and I served as his helper; it took all day. Not sure what a fair market retail price would have been, though. They came out the same day we called them (Friday). Although the evaporator was in stock, they waited until Tuesday to replace it. They took care of the warranty replacement so we did not have to be burdened with that paperwork. Overall they did excellent work as far as we can tell and came when they said. Although I did not get any other estimates, the overall price seemed pretty high to me. I dunno... Next time I will get at least one more estimate.I think some companies absorb the diagnostic fee if they do the repair. Apparently Standard does not.
Description of Work: diagnosed a Freon leak in the evaporator coil of my upstairs A/C unit (4 y/o 4 ton Rheem) and then replaced it. The part was still under warranty.

While sitting on my deck, I heard a grinding noise and looked over to see what was causing the noise. I noticed that the fan on one of my units was trying to spin and was unable to. I turned the unit off upstairs (the other unit was installed by Standard end of January). A few hours later, before going to bed, I turned the unit on and it was working. However, I knew it was only a matter of time before it, too, went out. My units were original to the house which was built in 1987. So I called Standard and Brian Penwell came out to give me an estimate. When the townhouse was built, there was only a small, square opening in the master bedroom closet to access the attic. So the work that needed to be done was twice the labor than for the downstairs unit. I agreed to the price and work was scheduled three days later (weekend). The installers arrived on time to start the job. It so happened that one of the installers had originally installed the units in my area back in '87! The first day they came, they had to enlarge the opening and dismantle the unit and bring it down in pieces. They left around 3:30 p.m. because it got really hot in the attic and the dismantling was completed. They arrived on time the next morning and worked until the job was completed. Brian called me about a week later to see if everything was working to my satisfaction. I told him the unit appeared to take much longer to cool off the area and the fan kept running all the time. So he came out the next day and checked EVERYTHING out! I really was amazed that he put so much time into it. The first thing he saw was that the thermostat was set to "fan" instead of "auto." I must have done it when I was trying to adjust the thermostat. When he was finished checking, he told me that the coolant was filled too much and that was as bad as not having enough. So he made the proper adjustments and told me that it should take care of the problem. The unit is now working properly and I am happy with their work. I feel confident that I can depend on them at any time to take care of any future problem, should one arise. Brian, I really appreciate your follow up and the thoroughness of your work.

Called provider to diagnose problem with A/C and was told that they would probably not be able to get a technician there until after noon. However I received a call mid-morning and was informed that a technician was available and would arrive shortly - which he did. He quickly found the problem, replaced the failed part from stock in his truck, cleaned the condenser coils and tested the unit. The unit is cooling as it used to.

Standard Heating and Air was very professional and was able to replace my unit on the same day I requested it. It was during a week where the temps were >100 degrees and I came home in the middle of the day to a 90 degree house. I called and they came and replaced the unit before the day was over even though it was about 105 outside and probably 120+ in the attic where they did a lot of the work. I felt that the price I paid was more than the work/unit was worth, but simply the fact that they did it so quickly and the system has been functioning beautifully since has made it worth it.

I was recently told by the company from whom I purchased my heat pump that I had a leak in the coils and needed to purchase a new system. Before doing this I contacted Standard and asked that they check my system and give me an estimate on a new system if I needed one. They came out and spent one and a half hours checking my system, and did not charge me anything to do this. They noted that freon had been put in by the other company but said everything looked good to them and suggested I wait a year before doing anything. He did say that if I got my heat serviced around October while the weather is still warm that they could also do a quick check on the air to see how it was doing. I intend to do this. Their representative was very nice and professional, and I was very pleased with the way he checked everything out and explained things to me. I feel that I can trust Standard to provide me with advice on what is best for me. In my opinion, Standard is an A+ company.

We have 2 air units and knew 1 wasn't working. The working one was serviced to prepare for the summer season. We decided to replace the other one after getting estimates to repair vs. replace. They were professional and responsive. We actually used a different company five years ago to replace an air conditioner when we lived at a different location. Our experience with STANDARD was much, much better than the previous company. Would recommend Standard to anyone.

I called around 9 AM to request service. About 45 minutes later, I received a call that a technician was en route, and he arrived around 10 AM. The technician reviewed the situation, opened up the system to take a look, and got the furnace and thermostat started again. He explained how moisture in the area can affect the components' performance, and we discussed some ideas to prevent future problems. He also made recommendations such as bringing in an electrician to put the furnace on an isolated circuit (versus on circuit with outlets in another room in the house). The service person was very polite and efficient. Seems this company runs an honest business, and they are located fairly close to my home - I will definitely use Standard again in the future.

We had an electrician fit a thermostat and this went horribly wrong as he did not select the correct option for the type of heating/cooling system. After having the A/C run the heating instead of cooling, we had to call a Heating/AC contractor to quickly fix the settings for us. After looking up one of the best rated and reviewed contractor, we contacted Standard heating and cooling. They were prompt to return my call and offered help with remedying the situation. I was told about the service fee in advance and I thought of using their Angie's customer coupon to offset that by a little. What I did not know was the rates for their services itself (which are on top of the service fee) and that's where it turned out to be a shocker. After inspecting the system and the settings in the new thermostats, the technician figured that the electrician had setup the thermostat as something else instead of a heat-pump. All he had to do was change the system type from ordinary heat/cool system to heat pump type on two thermostats. All the rest of the settings were left intact. I felt like a stupid after the fact. It does bleed to pay more than the price of two Honeywell thermostats for just correcting a setting on the thermostat.

While it seems like a simple fix to correct the errors made by another contractor, there is more responsibility on our part than it first appears. Our technician is trained to look at the entire system to be sure we correct all the problems and not just the most obvious one. This can take some time to do but we strive to have everything working perfectly when we leave. Regarding the price, we charge a diagnostic fee to determine what the problem is and we then quote a repair price to correct the problem. This is done for each system that needs attention. The customer can then approve the repair or can even choose to call back the contractor that made the error. In this case, I think the amount we charged to correct the problems on two systems is a fair price. We try to be up-front with our pricing, flexible with the options we offer, and professional in the way we conduct business. Thank you for calling us. We appreciate that. Tom Kime, President

From start to finish they were great - and I trusted their work.
Description of Work: Standard did all the plumbing for 2 bathroom remodels in August/Sept of 2012. I have a 42 year old house and I replaced all sinks, toilets, bath tubs, shower pans and faucets. They did a great professional job and had to replace some plumbing in the walls as well --- as this remodel was down to the studs with most of the sheet rock removed in both bathrooms. We passed all inspections and I found the work to be of high quality. It was a great experience and you really want your plumber to by the best - and they are!

Initially when I called Standard for a plumbing estimate, I got no response. A couple of days later I called back, only to get an even worse response than "No Response" from the administrative staff. This call pushed me to write a response on Angie's List, detailing this experience. Well, this got a response from Standard. I was contacted by the Plumbing Service Manager, and we made arrangements for him to visit and give me an estimate. I was impressed with his professional manner and willingness to correct this terrible miscommunication that had taken place. I subsequently gave the job to Standard. I can't say enough about how good these people are. My ratings would have been all A's if not for the initial miscommunication. Highly recommend Standard for any of your plumbing needs.

Standard used to be a fantastic company 5 years ago when I had problems with my A/C and all Steel City wanted to do was sell me stuff, I called them. They were so good I recommended them to my parents when it came time to replace the small hotel=like unit in the sunroom that they had built on to my Grandmother's house. When they passed away and I moved in to the house I called them to schedule maintenance on the unit. The first time they sent one guy out who took the cover off, looked at it and said it was a 2 man job. They then sent another guy out and did the maintenance. I had to wait on the other guy for a while. The next time I told them it was a 2 person job because they had to pull the unit out of the wall.. Well, they showed up with ONE guy. Had to re-schedule. The last time it was like deja vu all over again. Only instead of taking the unit outside to clean, they left it inside, plunked it down on my new hardwood floors and made a huge mess.. I was done. They couldn't even get the plastic cover back on properly. Well, the next 2.5 years we had very little rain because of the drought but the last few months I noticed water coming out of the bottm of the unit when it rained hard. I called them, set up an appointment, and told them it was a two man job again. Well, they sent one guy out who took the cover off after I explained to him what I thought was wrong. He looked at it briefly and then went outside and stood there looking. he never touched it. Then he got his phone out and talked for (I am NOT kidding) over 30 minutes on his cell!! He then came in and said the drains were clogged... REALLY?? I said NO they were not and he said well, why is water coming in then? I wanted to scream. Needless to say the issue was never resolved.

After reading this report on Angie’s List, I looked into the matter. After sending a supervisor out to her house we discovered what the real problem was. It was not an air conditioning problem but a siding problem. Gaps in the siding on the outside of the house were allowing water to run onto the top of the thru-the-wall air conditioning cabinet and into the house. Apparently, this was not a problem except during a heavy storm. While there, our supervisor caulked the siding and then sprayed water on the cabinet to be sure it didn’t leak. I am sorry the owner was upset but we fixed her problem and I followed up with her to be sure everything was OK. I think all is well now. As always, it is our goal to satisfy our customers. I hope we have succeeded here. Tom Kime, President

I am completely satisfied with the service at Standard. I called the number and spoke with a pleasant lady who quickly sceduled my appointment for a plumber to come out. She gave me an estimate of when he/she would arrive the next day. On the day of the appointment the plumber called me about 30 minutes prior to his arrival. He was nice and courteous. He accessed the issue and quickly unclogged it and replaced several items within the flushing mechanism. He caulked along the base of the toilet so that it wouldn't so easily flood the floor below. He was efficient and clean. The whole process was text-book of a good business model for a plumbing company. I will definitely use Standard again.
Description of Work: One of my children likely put a toy in one of our toilets which became stopped up and overflowed. The water seeped down through the floor boards and down to the floor below.
