Rick was very professional, wore shoe coverings while in my home. He fixed all the faucets and without being asked, brought in my newspaper from the yard, because I had told him I was struggling with back pain. I was very pleased with the end results, but thought $414 was alot to pay to fix 3 faucets. $414 included the $50 coupon from Angie's List, so it would have been $464.
Description of Work: Repaired 3 leaking faucets: kitchen sink; a bathroom sink; and a shower handle.

The consultation was free. I picked them because I saw their rating on Angie's List. What I liked was that the guy who came out, his name is Brian and he was honest. They were not the cheapest and on the higher end but they were honest with us and that is what I appreciate the most. He told us that we actually didn't need air duct cleaning and it would be cheaper to clean the air coolers ourselves. He said he could charge us but we could do it ourselves. So we never actually paid money to clean them. He was on time, came around the time he said he would be here. He stayed about 15-20 minutes and he was a nice guy.

They gave us good service. They come when they say they are going to come. If we have any problems, they rectify. They are good in responding. We have a contract with them to have the generator serviced and we pay $250 or $275 a year. They seem to know their product, but we specified that we wanted a Generac generator. So, they were familiar with the product and they had servicemen for servicing and fixing the generator. That was the main reason we went to them. We would use their services in the future too because we have a contract with them for a year or so. In fact, we had used them several years ago to install a hot water heater that burst overnight and it was on a Sunday. Their service was very good, but they charged about three times than what they do during the week because it was on a Sunday. However, most people will charge like that.
Description of Work: We use the services of Standard Heating & Air Conditioning Co Inc. to service our generator that we have for the whole house. They come twice a year to service our generator and their last visit to our house was in October of last year.

I asked a lady at the company if they gave free estimates for an air conditioner problem for a mobile home . She asked if it was for repair or replacement. I said repair. She replied that they ONLY give free estimates on replacement. To add insult to injury, she ending our conversation that her company does not work on mobile home air conditioner units. As an owner of five mobile home rentals and two houses, I know now who not to call.
Description of Work: I noticed on Angie's List to call for details regarding a free estimate. Therefore, I called

Response from Standard Air, Plumbing & Insulation
The Angie’s List Member who wrote these comments is correct in that we only give free estimates for replacement equipment and not for repairs. However, we think our policy regarding repairs is quite fair and in line with what most other companies in town do. We charge a reasonable diagnostic fee to send a serviceman out to diagnose the problem. After determining what the problem is, we will then inform the customer what the cost will be to make the repair. There is not enough room on the section of Angie’s List regarding free estimates to explain all this so we say “Ask for details”. When we were called we gave the details. I think if he calls other companies he will find similar policies from reputable companies. Regarding mobile home air conditioning units: those units often require special equipment and parts and since we don’t stock those parts we usually don’t accept service calls for them. We also don’t take service calls for window units or refrigeration equipment. It’s hard to be everything to everybody so it’s important for us to know our limitations. We try to be upfront when people call so there are no surprises. I’m sorry that we could not meet his needs but I think it is a bit unfair to give us a low rating on Angie’s List for simply explaining how we operate. If he calls around I am sure he can find a company that can take care of his needs and one that is more familiar with mobile home systems would be a great choice.

I called on Friday June 17th. Bryan was at the house on Monday June 20th. He was very professional and gave us estimates for two different systems. We decided on which system to go with. He told us that he would call us to schedule the day they would be able to start. He warned us that it might not be until the next week before someone could get to us. We have been having to make due with a couple of window units and fans for the last several years so next week was still pretty fast for us. A short time after he left he called to say that they could have the technicians here tomorrow between 8:30am and 9:00am. They started work on Tuesday June 21st right before 9:00am. They got right to work and were very professional. They worked non stop removing our old split system both inside and outside. They hooked up a pump to our line to drain anything in it. They got the big outside unit installed. Between 12:00pm and 1:00pm they had to go to the shop to make some custom parts with measurements they took for an extra intake vent they were making in the basement for the new unit. They said that if at all possible they would be back before the end of the day, and if they didn't make it back today they would be back first thing in the morning. They mentioned that they had a seminar they had to go to at 4:00pm and I knew that they had to eat sometime, so I didn't expect them back that day. On Wednesday June 22nd they arrived between 8:00am and 8:30am and got right back to work. They had everything done new furnace/cooling coils installed and hooked up to new big unit outside, extra vent built, new thermostat installed and new system up and running. They were finished between 10:00am and 11:00am. We are finally comfortable in our home and have piece of mind that everything is under warranty. We are very pleased with Standard Heating and Air. I was also very impressed with their website it is very informative and educates you on the the different systems.

First off I'm a bit torn, this should be two reviews. The first review was for the troubleshooting of my old AC unit, the second was for the installation of a new AC unit. On the first I was dealing with the service department. I was not overwhelmed with the level of troubleshooting that went into my old unit (which was less than three years old). It seemed that the techs had decided that the previous owner had undersized the unit (even though Standard was the company that put it in, and it is the same size that had been in the house since 1985). As a result they did not what I consider to be "fully" troubleshoot the in-place ac system. Their testing was mostly limited to testing puron pressure etc... They did not test for return leaks or do wet-bulb/dry-bulb analysis (which by my understanding should be performed). However, they did come out repeatedly when called and the technicians were courteous and professional. The second part, I'd given up on getting someone to actually run tests to see if the AC was working to the full extent it could, so I decided to go ahead and up the size of the unit considerably (as was recommended). That way at least I would have a company who had recommended a specific size unit on the hook for the sizing whenever I called. Once I was off to the sales side everything went much better. and the Installation crew was fantastic. Brian worked with me on price since the original unit was one of theirs and was only 3 years old. The installer actually knew and cared about all aspects of the system. He had many years of experience and knew the systems and tuning inside and out. The crew took great pains to keep my entire house clean (after they left you would never have known they had just installed a new unit in my attic). It was a VERY good experience. I cannot recommend them enough. There was only one issue after installation which had to do with a leak in the return duct work. Brian (sales) came out to my house, identified, and fixed the issue the same day I called him. The B I gave in quality was an average of an A for sales/installation and a C for repair....

The technician was out within an hour and cleaned the coils of the unit. He then said we needed to get a new unit and that he would have a sales person out the next morning. The next morning at 8:00 a salesperson was at our door. He told us we needed to replace our 5 year old unit with a new $5,000 unit. We said we want to get another opinion. We called another company and they came out and found 3 leaks in the system -- Standard never even looked for a leak. They recharged the unit and it has been great for 3 weeks. They believe there are many years left in our equipment. Standard keeps sending me emails telling me our estimate is due to expire. I have replied and told them something smelled fishy and I will not recommend them to anyone. Update: The owner called me and apologized for my bad experience. He then sent me back the money we paid for the service call. He seemed genuine.

The igniter on the furnace would not ignite, hence I had no heat. I called their office and had a technician at my house within three hours. He was very friendly and explained in detail the work that he did. My biggest complaint is that I feel like I was ripped off price wise. I was charged over $400 for the furnace board (50A55-843). A quick google search shows prices between $70-90 on respectable websites such as Amazon. Had I known what the issue was before calling Standard (hence the need for a technician) I would have just ordered the part myself and saved $300.

We appreciate that you took the time to express your concerns and we will try to address them. We may not have explained ourselves well enough on our invoice but the price we charged for the part also included the labor to install the part and check it out to be sure all was working OK. I understand that sometimes you can find parts on the internet for prices considerably less than we charge. Those prices can even be lower than what we pay our local suppliers for the same parts. However, we choose to purchase from our local suppliers because we know who we are dealing with and that we can count on them if we have a problem. The purchase of parts on the internet can be a good thing for the person who can correctly diagnose which part on their furnace is bad, can wait for the part to be shipped, and is capable of making the repair. Warranty is another big issue. If a part that we have installed fails, we return and correct the problem for no charge during our warranty period. If a part fails that was purchased on the internet the homeowner has to contact the internet supplier and have a new part shipped to them. Local suppliers will not provide a warranty replacement part for items purchased on the internet. We provide a service that consists of diagnosing the problem, stocking or ordering the correct part, making the repair, and warranting our work for a full year, all in a timely manner. To provide the prompt service that our customers expect from us we have to have trained technicians available 24/7 with fully stocked trucks backed by an office staff that can receive the calls, talk to the customers, and dispatch the technicians. All of that service costs money and we have to charge a fair mark-up on the parts and labor that we provide. We have served Birmingham area customers since 1939 so tens of thousands of customers have found our prices to be fair and competitive over the years. In short, we offer a service that is vastly different than what you can get from the internet.

I called them at 7:30 am on a Monday, by 8:15 the salesman was at my door, I ok'd the purchase, by 10:15 the installers were there to take out the old unit; by12:00 the new unit arrived, and by 4:30 and 4 men later the unit was installed and working. The professionalism was impeccable. Each man knew his job and did it exactly to spects. If they needed to come inside to check the thermostat, they knocked and told me exactly what they needed and did it and left. They were always courteous and kind. They came back the next day to I have Never had the quality of service and professionalism from any other job of this kind. They installed a complete heating and air unit outside of my home. I will highly recommend this company to anyone who needs this service.
Description of Work: They installed a complete heating and air unit outside of my home. They had to completely remove my enormous h/a unit with complicated duct work. They replaced the "concrete" pad that it sat on. It was a concrete piece that could be layed on the base after they removed remnants of the old unit. They took such pains to make it look and work as it should. The old unit was awful. The new unit had aluminum pieces cut especially to cover the new duct work. They spent much time using a level to be sure all was plumb. They were simply PROFESSIONAL in every way that they worked.

I signed a service agreement with them after they did some repair work. The agreement will be for coming out twice a year and the cost is around $250. They showed up exactly when they said they would. They did a full service in checking. I have an unusually large return air filter and they had that with them and were able to change it, which was nice.. Usually I had to get my own filter when I had other companies do it. They were very neat and clean and it was a very muddy day.

They came to the house 2x. the first was to repair a drain system on one of my units. The tech did a good job on the service and explained everything in detail. The cost for the repair was high, but if it fixes the problem that two other companies tried to fix, then we are good. The problem came when I told the tech I wanted someone to come out and give me an estimate for moving 23 feet of ductwork. My wife meet the tech at the home and showed him what needed to be moved. She also asked him about our den with cathedral ceiling that was tough to keep cool/warm. The tech called me at my office and explained that he would email me an estimate for moving the ductwork and also explained that we had a power vent not working in the attic. I played dumb as my company installs these almost daily, and the new vent was laying in the attic in a box waiting for one of my crews to be free to install for me. When he told me the cost to replace one of them (we have 3) would be around $700, I nearly fell out of my chair. We install the exact same units for $225 and make a very good profit doing so. To help keep the upstairs working better, he explained that he could add 3 supply vents to our area over the balcony, but would need to increase the upstairs unit from a 2.5 ton to a 4 ton system. The cost for this?? a whopping $18,456... for a single system!!!! If we wanted to get the tax credit we could upgrade to another unit that had a better seer rating for only $21,396. Now I know everyone is in business to make a profit, so am I, but upon research I found that the unit he quoted me is the bottom of the pile for Carrier... they do not make a less efficient system at all. next $21,396 system is one step up from that. I also found that I could buy they system for ~$4,000... add to that the duct lines for about $1000 more and that leaves $13,500 to cover profit and labor..... give me a break!!! I had my main system replaced 5 years ago and only paid $6,500 with a high bid of $9,500.

Response from Standard Air, Plumbing & Insulation
I don’t think we did a very good job of explaining the complexity of what we proposed to do for the Member. In an effort to correct some cooling problems that he has, we proposed a completely new system with larger equipment, new metal ductwork, new flexible run-outs, and new refrigerant tubing from the attic to the condensing unit on the ground. In addition, we planned to run a new trunk duct down through a closet to a small attic space behind a knee wall and to install four new supply registers to serve the hot loft area (this was going to be a fairly difficult task). We estimated that it would take us two weeks to remove the existing equipment & ductwork and to install the new system in a very hot attic in July. So, I think we were planning to do much more work than the Member realized. After reading the Member's review on Angie’s List, I reviewed our comfort consultant’s estimate and found it to be priced fairly for the amount of work we proposed to do. I then called the Member to go over our proposal with him. He was kind enough to listen to me and I hope that he understands that we were trying to price our proposed work fairly. I know that our proposed work would have solved his problems. Whenever there is a lot of labor involved it is very possible to get a significant variance in the estimate of time it will take to get the job done. If he gets three estimates for this job I wouldn’t be surprised if he gets three different proposals and three significantly different prices due to the complexity of solving his problem. We are happy for customers to get several opinions and estimates when a job is this involved. When a customer can compare different proposals we are usually successful in obtaining the work. We certainly don’t get everything we quote but we have gotten enough to stay in business since 1939 and we have thousands of satisfied customers that have used us over and over again. Regarding the attic ventilator, we proposed a fan with a lifetime warranty on the motor rather than the standard fan that has only a two year warranty on the motor. Our cost for that ventilator is three times the cost of the standard fan so our price reflected that additional cost and some extra time to get to the Member's house which is quite a distance from our office. We replace quite a few of the cheaper ventilators every summer with these better fans and our customers are usually very happy with the price, the installation, and the performance of the better ventilators. We were awarded the Super Service Award last year by Angie’s List so I hope our track record at Angie’s List indicates that we will provide excellent service at a competitive price. If anyone has any questions, he/she can reach me on my direct line at 205-271-4322. Thank you. Tom Kime, President, Standard Heating & Air Conditioning Company, Inc.
