After multiple storms in our area, we had wind damage on 3 of 4 sides and had to have a new roof. Selected the roofer based on a Better Business A+ rating. (Didn't have Angie's list at the time). Justin Clayton, QPC Quality Roofing & Construction. Not a typo - I don't know what the P is for in QPC) I picked GAF Timberline roof with 3 components which, if properly installed and ours wasn't, have a high wind rating. We have a very steep roof. Things did not start off well when Justin Clayton was a couple of hours late meeting with the subcontracted roofers the first day. They saw the steep roof that drops 2 stories in the back and half of them said "No way" and left before he arrived. I could not communicate well with the subcontracted workers as my Spanish is very limited. It was supposed to be a 2 day job.The workers were on like day five and not finished yet when Justin Clayton, asked for payment saying he needed to go on and get the money to pay for materials he had purchased and that they were ?basically finished?? - only a "little left to do? and he would get someone to come move the truck they used to haul off the old roof. I told him he would have to wait and that he could talk to my husband. The next day the emergency brake failed on the truck and, because it was full and heavy and on a steep driveway, it gained momentum, scraped and broke the retaining wall next to it and crashed into a boat trailer and a metal utility trailer pushing them into oak trees in the back yard. I heard the crash and ran outside to find the workers, with a ladder just feet from the drive, had barely escaped being hit. Shaken, they left not to return. It was days before Justin Clayton found someone who would come finish the roof. Justin Clayton felt no responsibility for the damages from the wreck. We had already had several problems with the roof installation. One was the use of cheaper shingles used instead of the dimensional shingles on the ridges. After I insisted he did have most of those replaced properly ( I think we have one ridge toward the back not redone) but more problems became evident as it time passed. Unable to come to an agreement (Mr. Clayton insisted on the whole amount while we wanted compensation for damages and adjustment for unsatisfactory work, I gave him a check to cover the cost of the materials and he tore it up saying he would not take any money until he fixed all of the problems. Days later he said there was nothing he could do that there was no reasonable way to fix the problems and demanded payment ? full payment ? that he had done everything he was supposed to do that he ?told? the subcontractor what to do and that if the subcontractor did not do it properly, that was not his problem, that the roof being done wrong did not void the warranty of the shingles (He is correct that not enough nails does not void the warranty against manufacturer defects but we loose our wind warranty. We have since learned that the warranty would have been no good because of inadequate ventilation. Mr. Clayton said it was fine to take out the power vents and use ridge vents. I learned later that a minimum length of ridge vents is required and as we have more hip than ridge our attic was like an oven. The vents that he had had removed were thrown off of the roof and destroyed. We bought new ones and paid a reputable company to come install them. When they cut the holes for installation they found and documented with photos, that there is no roof felt in that area. We don't know how much of the roof has no felt without pulling up the roof. We do know that he tried to get by with lower grade shingles. We discovered later too few nails were used in the shingles (the higher wind rated shingles require 6 nails and he assured us of that in writing) and we didn't get the wind rated starter strip we were supposed to get. What we do have: a damaged brick wall, 2 damaged trailers, damaged trees, damaged drain pipes (that were run over) and expense for replacing power vents that should have never been removed and a demand for $13,287 - a refusal to make any monetary adjustment. In July we got a lawyer. Mr. Clayton was informed by our lawyer that any and all communications were to go to him. Mr. Clayton or his lawyer then asked to have the roof inspected by a third party, which we agreed to. No one came. Last month the sheriff woke us to serve papers. The papers had a copy of a lien on our house (which we did not know had been filed) for the full amount. And it stated a petition to have our house sold to pay the lien. We checked with our lawyer and he had not received anything so we faxed it to our lawyer to handle. Very stressful. I want other people to know about my experience with Justin Clayton/ QPC - Quality Roofing & Construction. I tried to file a complaint with the BBB but when I clicked "yes" on litigation it said I couldn't file. It is unbelievable that he can keep an A+ rating with the BBB because I filed a lawsuit. Unless it is a government lawsuit they don't report it according to the FAQ page. I may research litigation to see if, since it hasn't gone to court yet, if I can check the "no" box on litigation. A storm woke me tonight and I couldn't get back to sleep with the roar of the wind. Checked on Intellicast - expect wind gusts to 50 mph: expect trees to be uprooted. Nearly every home in our neighborhood has experienced wind damage now and more storms to come. It will be a year next month. How many more months do I have to deal with this problem?
Description of Work: Don't trust BBB ratings: I chose a roofer with A+ rating.
