Please read this in its entirety. If nothing else, you will get a good laugh... I rented a house in Homewood, AL through Phil Dorn, the president of Jemsion Realty. Jemison did not own the house, but they managed the home as a rental property for a private individual who did not live in the Birmingham area. I subsequently had a conflict with Jemison about a pet. I decided to move to a different rental property- not with Jemison - so that I could keep my pet. Despite the fact that the argument Jemison made about my pet's "damage" to the property was garbage, that wasn't what really aggravated me. What aggravated me was Phil Dorn's conduct and treatment of both myself and the previous lessees. Phil is a terrible communicator. He doesn't check his voicemail, but is insistent on soliciting a prompt response from you. Phil's emails came between 10pm and 1am, were usually incoherent, and were always wrought with misspellings. When given the option of keeping my dog on the premises or moving elsewhere, Phil demanded a response literally during the same phone conversation in which he gave me the ultimatum. He also refused to give me the owner's phone number so that I could attempt to negotiate an additional security deposit (notice I said additional, the original was very hefty). And now for the security deposit issue... Lo and behold, the previous renters have been threatened, threatened! to 'drop' the issue about their security deposit! The previous renters and myself are all law students in Birmingham, and supposedly the owner of the house has 'connections' with the law faculty. Phil has told the previous renters that if they don't forget about their security deposits, there will be consequences for them at school! Is that not the best thing you've ever heard?? Oh-and the threats were via email to the previous renters' attorney. Smooth move Phil. Do yourself a favor and avoid Jemison Realty. With the economy still struggling and the housing market in the doldrums, Birmingham is wrought with decent, cheap rental homes and apartments. There is no need to be bullied by a slum lord. The only rationale we have come up with for the conflict we've experienced is that Jemison is trying to fix the house up for a potential buyer using our security deposits (I haven't got mine back either - full or partial).
Description of Work: I rented 601 Devon Drive, Homewood, AL, from Jemison Realty during the summer of 2011. I intended to stay for the remaining academic year 2011-2012, and that's where the fun began. The house was a 3/2 with an unfinished basement, mid 1960's era baby boomer home. I found the house from a friend - Jemison made no effort to market it to me. Jemison made little effort afterwords. Check out the full story.
