On first contact I told the owner what work I needed done and my budget. He asked me to send him pictures. I called him the second tome and he asked me if I KNOW WHO ERWIN BROTHERS ARE ? I responded with I did not. He decided to come out to do a walk through and as I stated before he knew my budget and the square footage, When he looked at the 320 SF area he said he would get back to us and the quote was over $29,000.00. This company need to be humbled and realize yes they may be good but you should treat every potential customer with respect.

Hello [member name removed], I enjoyed coming out to Morris and visiting you And your wife and discussing what you would like to do with your double wide mobile home, it was located in a very nice setting. I feel like I was respectful and helpful while looking over the project. I brought the information back to my desk and spent probably four hours overall doing your estimate. At that point I sent you the information and got right back with you(I don't remember you calling me back and saying thanks but no thanks) I'm sorry the dollar amount wasn't what you wanted but it was what I needed to do a good job. After having been in this business 40 years I know problems and expenses will come up that I can't see while I'm doing the initial walk through. You have to remember I do all this at my own expense. Also for every ten jobs I estimate I'm lucky to get one. I'm quite aware my estimates are not cheap, if they were I would have a lot better chances of getting work~ but I would have a lot of unhappy customers and what's the point of that? I would much rather start out at a price where I can turn out a wonderful job. I wish you the best of luck with the rest of your life,Paul

Paul Irwin and his staff are talented, professional and personable. A joy to work with. This was our second project with them. The quality of the roofing job was first-rate, although it took much longer to complete than anticipated.Paul was actively helpful and involved in keeping the roofing folks concentrating on our job. Weather also played a part in the length of the roofing project. The roofers are talented and the quality of their work is outstanding.
Description of Work: Roof construction and repair.Removal of old metal roofing.Replacement of French doors to patio. Installation of dehumidifying fan from crawlspace to outside, and other small home improvements. We also put on a new metal roof, which Paul subcontracted.

The interactions with Paul Irwin were professional. We had a contract that included a down payment (~1/3 of the final cost) and four interim payments (due upon completion of specific tasks). Pretty much everything went according to plans with respect to removal of old tiles and prepping for new tile, delivery and installation of Ludowici tile, and final clean up. One unexpected additional cost was that once the roofers got started, they determined that the pitch needed to be raised on the sunrooms. I had the choice to: 1) not have the roofing replaced on the sunroom, 2) not have the pitch raised (with the potential for future rain damage), or 3) pay the price and have the pitch raised. I chose the latter and am happy I did because the beauty of the tile roof is much more visible from the street. All of the roofers (Lloyd, Patrick, Eric, and Joe) were totally professional. It took a while, but that was because of the attention paid to detail that was evident in their craftsmanship (I could see them work on the sunroofs from my upstairs windows and was impressed with how deliberate and careful they were in their work.). In sum, I am extremely pleased with Paul Irwin and his crew; I would definitely recommend them to my friends and would use them again. I love my green Ludowici tile roof and so do my neighbors.
Description of Work: Replaced damaged concrete tile roof with Ludowici clay tiles, including raising pitch on side sunrooms and repairing chimney. Paul Irwin and his roofing crew are the professionals to go to if you are looking to replace or restore a roof on an historical home. I had three roofing contractors—all with stellar ratings on Angie's List—come to my home to evaluate my situation prior to contacting Paul. None demonstrated the experience or knowledge I wanted to ensure maintenance of the architectural and historical detail of my home—some even suggested alternative, inferior products. In contrast, Paul understood the importance of preserving the design of my roof for the period in which my home was built. Furthermore, Paul is connected with suppliers who can provide materials that are high quality and period-specific.

Our project began in Sept. of 2004 and finished Feb. 2005. They removed an existing enclosed deck, added 25 feet to the back of the house. We appreciated the cleanliness of the crew, the promptness, the creativity in the extra touches. we were only without a kitchen for 1 week. We did have a baking set-up in the existing dining room and the fridge in the 'new room' but really felt that we were minimally inconvenienced over all. There was a snag in the finish to the flooring, all hardwoods, but that was resolved quickly.
Description of Work: We added a large room, gutted the kitchen, gutted the existing den, and replaced windows and siding, roofing the new addition.

Our interaction with Irwin Brothers was a pleasant experience. When our three contractors returned with estimates, Irwin Brothers was not the one we chose. This was mainly due to the confusing estimate and appearing to be excess costs. I am sure if we pursued this with Irwin Brothers they would have explained but we just chose to go on with another contractor.

I have called the customer about this complaint & she told me she did not know you were making a report as you stated. Also I was never hired by her on June 6th,2011 and consequently did not complete any work I supposedly did. Yes,I did make the initial contact & consulted with her on three different items for about one hour & came away without enough information to do the driveway bid. I should have called her back & let her know I needed more information. I usually do call a perspective client back one way or the other. Sincerely,Paul

We were very happy with Irwin Brothers' professionalism, their work, and the end result. They had come highly recommended by my husband's colleagues for whom they had also done work. Obviously this work was done a long time ago, but the advantage of that is that we lived with the results for a long time. We enjoyed those shelves and cabinets for nine years before moving from that house. We had no complaints whatsoever. The shelves were well-built and we were delighted with them. I would definitely recommend Irwin Brothers based on that long ago experience. Of course, much may have changed since then. But the fact that they have been around for that long should also count for something. At the time we knew that they weren't the cheapest but that they came with high recommendations for quality work. That's what we experienced.
Description of Work: Irwin Brothers made and installed custom-made, ready-to-paint bookshelves (we wanted to paint them ourselves to save money) and cabinets in the dining room of our home--one large floor to ceiling cabinet with doors underneath and adjustable bookshelves above, and one long chest-high set of adjustable shelves that went the entire length of the room. The approximate service date and the amount of money we spent as above is only a very rough guess since it was so long ago and I don't remember exact dates and amounts.

They were very user-friendly and considerate of family needs. I was almost without a kitchen for maybe three or four days, and they made other arrangements throughout the house, so it was easy to maintain things. The price was a little high, but they were very nice people to work with. I would use them again in the future if necessary.
Description of Work: I used Irwin Brothers Remodeling for a kitchen remodel.
I signed a contract in May, but the project didn’t begin until August because they had contracts ahead of mine. While I would have liked for the project to have started sooner, I was able to select tile, fixtures, etc., during the estimate phase, so that helped when the project began. Also, when it did begin, it began 100%. There was a site coordinator (Mike) assigned to my job. Mike arrived promptly at 7:30am each business day. He had carpenter duties on the project and also coordinated with others assigned to the job (Irwin Brothers staff and subcontractors), also with Paul and with me. Some days there might be only Mike and one or two more people on site, but some days there might be eight or nine people in and out during the day. But always Mike. Mike got things set up every morning, and he picked up, swept up, and locked up at the end of each working day. Yep, even if I was home, Mike checked to make sure all doors were locked before he left I think Mike is an extremely talented/skilled trim carpenter and versatile handyman. He was very conscious about every task. He epitomized the carpenter rule of “measure twice, cut once”. Sometimes things took a little longer than I hoped, but when Mike was done, it was done right. I was pleased with the quality of staff assigned to my project, both Irwin Brothers Remodeling employees and subcontractors. Most had worked with Paul for a long time, so everyone knew his/her job and was able to get right to it. They were also likeable. Paul served as the project manager and designer for the project. Paul came by the site every day, and people on the project took direction from him. He had a few other projects going on concurrently, but he kept himself informed and visually inspected daily, and was very responsive if I had questions or needed to talk about anything. There were times that I told Paul that I thought he didn’t give his site coordinator enough authority or, perhaps, respect. However, I had specifically contacted Paul for this project because I was happy with the creative ideas, attention to detail, and devotion on quality he showed the prior project he had done for me, so I’m not sure I would have been satisfied if he had taken a lesser role. So it worked out fine. The actual time and cost of the remodeling work/materials for the kitchen and two bathrooms (as addressed under the original estimate and contract signed in May) tracked very close to the estimates. As I got more comfortable with the progress of the main project, I began to add the additional projects. The additional projects cost approximately 80% as much as the original project. I mention this to make a couple of points: First, that the original estimate for the kitchen and two baths was very detailed and tracked closely. Secondly, that it’s easy to run up significant cost by adding projects as you go along, so don’t be tempted do that unless they are projects you have already planned to do and budgeted for. In my case, I had planned to do some of these projects serially, but felt the team in place was right for them and that I might get some synergies by having them done at the same time. Being a non-morning-person who needs significant amount of personal time/space, it was a bit stressful to have to have people in her house at 7:30am for over 3 months, but now that it’s done, I’m very glad we muscled through it. One last comment is that I thought the detail of the weekly invoices was excellent. I love my “new” house. If I have additional remodeling projects, Paul will be first on my list of people to call.
Description of Work: I contacted Paul Irwin in April, 2010, and requested an estimate to remodel the kitchen and two bedrooms of my house, which was built in 1964. The kitchen had a previous upgrade, done by Irwin Brothers Remodeling in 1992. The bathrooms had not been previously upgraded. Paul provided a detailed estimate and I signed a contract (cost plus) in May. The work done under the scope of the original contract included: Kitchen: Room was gutted down to floor joists and wall studs. Cabinets were left in place, but countertop, doors and all hardware were removed. Built-in bench/banquette was torn out; island and all appliances were removed. Floor was mudded and porcelain tile laid diagonally. Sheetrock and trim, including crown molding, baseboards, etc., were installed and painted. Granite countertops and tumbled marble backsplash were installed. Cabinets were painted inside and out, and new hinges and pulls were installed. Some cabinets were modified to add additional drawer and shelf space, and a hinged, folding door was installed to provide better access and usage of a corner cabinet. New appliances (provided by me) were installed. Electrical and plumbing were brought up to code. As part of the electrical upgrade, the old fuse box in the basement was upgraded to a breaker panel. Work was also done in the laundry closet. In addition to new drainage pipes, a panel was installed in the wall for the washer and dryer connections and venting. Ceiling, laundry closet and multiple doors (including back entry door) were painted. Bathrooms: Both bathrooms were completely gutted down to floor joists and walls studs. The hall bathroom was fitted with a new custom vanity with granite countertop, new fixtures (sink, commode, cast iron tub, and shower). Porcelain tile floors and porcelain and tumbled marble tub/shower surround were installed. New sheetrock, crown molding, and baseboards were installed and painted. Ceiling was painted. New vent fan was installed. New light fixture, mirror and wall cabinet (all provided by me) were installed. The master bathroom was fitted with a new custom vanity, limestone countertop, new fixtures (sink, commode, shower, no tub), new porcelain tile floor, sheetrock, crown molding, baseboards, vent fan, light fixture, mirror and wall cabinet. In addition, a custom shower (3’dx5w’x8’h), with bench (16’dx30”wx18”h), was installed. The shower has a floor to ceiling glass panel and glass shower door. The walls, floor and ceiling of the shower are porcelain tile and tumbled marble. To accommodate the shower, plumbing had to be relocated to a different wall, and a window had to be moved about 7 inches, requiring exterior window casing and brick modification. After the original project began, I added several subprojects, including: --New hardwood floors. Old flooring was removed in foyer (parquet) and den (carpet and old tile underneath) and new unfinished oak flooring installed. The living room, dining room, hall, and three bedrooms had all carpeting removed and the existing hardwood exposed. A few damaged areas in the existing flooring were removed, and replaced with new hardwood. In places where new hardwood met existing hardwood, it was “woven” in, so that you couldn’t tell the difference between the old and the new after it was finished. The floors were sanded, stained, sealed. Toe molding was installed throughout the rooms with hardwood, even around the semicircular hearth. Carpet was also removed from stairs and treads replaced as necessary. --New staircase banister. Carpet and wrought iron railing were removed staircase in the foyer. Wooden newel posts, balusters, and handrail were installed. Some treads were replaced. The newel posts, treads, and handrail were stained, and risers and trim were painted. --New front entry door: Existing double doors were removed, and new Douglas fir nine-light front door and sidelights were installed and painted (also the external surround and pediment were painted). --Paneling was removed in den; sheetrock, crown molding and baseboards were installed and painted. --Walls in foyer and one bedroom were painted. New baseboards were installed and painted in living room, dining room and hall. --Sheetrock was repaired on garage wall where car had run into it. --All door hinges and knob sets were replaced on interior and exterior doors. New locks were installed on exterior doors. --Attic installation was installed.

The quality of the work was good, but I wasn't happy with how the budget was handled. I constantly told the owner I had a budget I didn't want to go over for the work. Throughout the work there was things that were nickel and dimed to make the price go up. I was unsatisfied that the final cost came out above what I told them my maximum budget was for. At the same time I was having some problems with raccoons in my attic. They showed up the next day with traps out to try and catch it, but didn't mention it would cost anything or ask if I wanted their help. They ended up charging me for the work, even though they didn't catch anything. I thought this was unprofessional. Mr. Irwin, during the time of the siding work, mentioned how my cross beam in my house was not very stable and that he should fix it. I had never noticed a problem about it, but took his advice. They installed a metal beam across the front door which supposedly was to extend across, but it didn't. I did agree for them to do the work though. I just didn't appreciate his constant sales pitch to add on different things to the price. If you have a budget you have to fight Mr. Irwin on all of these extra little charges he wants to put in.
Description of Work: I hired them to replace siding that had been partially damaged on the side of my chimney and another little area of my house.

Paul is exacting and meticulous. Compared to previous contractor experiences, we trusted Paul and his crew because they did what they said they were going to do, when they said they would do it. He is pricey, but I have not seen workmanship like his from any of our other contractors. You really get A+ work from him and his crew. His knowledge about historic homes and materials was essential to our job. The historic nature of our renovation is what made us choose him, after several other experiences when we went with a lower bidder who did not understand the craftsmnship needed to work on some of the older materials in our house. The biggest leap of faith was signing a pay-as-you-go contract, because Irwin Bros. will not give a project estimate. For us, working within a set budget, we were concerned about the open-ended nature of that arrangement. Paul was a great communicator throughout the process, so that as we came up on our different cost benchmarks, we discussed how we would proceed. The overall cost was higher than expected, but not by much. And not so much higher than other experiences in which we did have a project estimate that went over and over because the workers encountered unexpected troubles in our old home. Paul told us in older home projects, it is very difficult to give a full picture of the scope of work until the crew is inside and able to see what is damaged and needs replacing. We found that to be quite true and understood his billing methods grew out of that work experience. Also, I cannot tell you what difference it made to have Paul's project manager on the job. She made sure each element of the job was well-timed to avoid delays between the different crews. Our only delay was due to weather--cold and rain persisted during the painting, but that was really the only hitch. Our house is transformed.
Description of Work: Irwin Brothers performed a major exterior historical renovation of our house and barn/detached carriage house. They researched and reconstructed the decorative wood details on our 1911 home, fixed the tile roof, repaired the stucco, and scraped and painted the house. It was incredible! Also, they completely saved a wood-frame building on our property (19th century) that was originally a farm house and became the barn/carriage house for our home. It was missing one exterior wall, needed jacking up, a new foundation, new roof, new wood cladding and all the necessary structural interior work (as in columns, walls, and windows). Paul Irwin lovingly researched the building and worked with his engineer and architect and his crew to make sure the rebuild conformed as closely as possible to the original integrity of the structure. He went through the extensive zoning, permitting and historical review process with us. It was an amazing save of a structure. I felt how much Paul cared about getting it right throughout the process. He was a true partner in the project, even when we wondering whether it was too far gone to salvage.

This became a 10 month project, as we found more things to add to the project as we went along. This is because the quality of the work and the relationship with EB was exceptional. Their assistance with the planning, choice of materials, and their advice as we proceeded was first rate in every way. Once the project started, they were punctual, professional, dependable, courteous and competent from the top to bottom of their organization; and as extensive as all this was, they planned and executed the work with absolute minimal intrusion. When all was completed we were glad to have it finally done, but we kind of hated to see them go.
Description of Work: Major remodeling project centered around enlargement and upgrading 3 bathrooms in our 50 year old home. 2 baths enlarged by taking space from existing bedrooms. 3rd bath enlarged by bump out of brick exterior. 1 Bedroom redone with new hardwood floor & enlarged closet. Painted 2 bedrooms. New carpet in hall and 2 bedrooms. Remodeled half bath. Extensive plumbing upgrades for new baths (including a steam unit), and to correct original flaws. Bump out required new roofing (metal roof) and guttering. Painted exterior of home. Repaired and sealed brick walkway and steps. Replaced concrete in portions of driveway. Replaced water damaged paneling in sunroom, regrooved plywood panels to match existing paneling.

Description of Work: A negative report was submitted on July 18, 2006 from an unknown source stating we were dissatisfied with the service we received for replacement of the siding on our house. We are unsure where this report generated from but feel it necessary to set the record straight. Irwin Brothers was hired to replace the siding on our house in June 1998 and we could not be more pleased with the workmanship and customer service we received throughout the process. The siding is now 10 years old and still looks outstanding!

On all the projects the company has performed well; the owner is very experienced and is often able to give good advice on a project during the design phase. The workmanship is generally of high quality; the employees are all very polite and over a long project have become part of the family. One of the most important things about Irwin Brothers is the fact that they stand by their work and will always come back and check on anything that they have done, even if it is years later. The costs are generally a little higher than competitors, but the quality is worth it. Another reason the cost was sometimes higher than the estimate was because we changed a number of things as we went along. We were made aware by the contractor that there would be an added cost for changes. We have been very satisfied with the work by this company.
Description of Work: Most recent work was major remodeling of front porch area, door replacements and reroofing. Have actually used this company for multiple remodeling projects between 1986 and the present. Have added a sun room and playroom at previous residence and at current residence did a major remodeling of the original structure and then added on a 2000 square foot addition in 2001. The recent project was completed in September 2007. A number of our friends have also used the company and been satisfied.

This small guest bath is now the most perfect room in the house. Even the pipes (now hidden of course) are beautiful in their symmetry. I am not kidding. We have done demolition on other parts of the house that uncovered sloppy work----extra wire, jerry-rigged plumbing and carpentry, debris-crammed walls. Nothing like that in this bathroom. It's one of the few renovation projects I've ever undertaken about which I have no regrets. It was quite expensive, but we really did get what we paid for. The IB crew is excellent: hardworking, careful and personable. One of the reason we chose IB over (less pricey) bids was because we now have a child and the crew would be in the house for several weeks, Our toddler was interested in the whole process and the IB crew cheerfully engaged/tolerated him. Their kindness was an added bonus---fundamentally, we knew we could trust them around our house, our belongings, our child.
Description of Work: Demolished and removed debris from bathroom and adjoining closets; included the intact removal of cast-iron tub and wood moulding (which was reinstalled). Met me at the bath fixtures store to assist in selection of tile, sink, toilet, and shower fixtures. Irwin Brothers did everything---plumbing, carpentry, tile, custom-built a medicine cabinet, painting and all finish work. Rebuilt and improved closets. The work is all under warranty---and when we did have a mishap (which can happen in houses nearly 100 years old), on a Sunday afternoon, IB answered the phone and made arrangements to be at our house that very day. We opted for a Monday morning call, but we were pleased and (based on previous experience with other companies) amazed with the service.

We are very disappointed with Irwin Brothers. Our contract was for time and materials plus 50%. They asked for $7500.00 up front before starting work which we gave them. This was to be added to the last invoice. They charged us approximately $2000.00 for building permits, we were charged more than a $1000 for calling in a daily report and we were charged for extra labor when it was not needed. The pantry and powder room ceilings were framed at the wrong height, gas lines were rerouted twice that should have been cut out. Irwin's employee caused a water leak and cut off all water to the house. They called for a port a john and charged us plus added 50%. No one bothered to ask us if this was agreeable. We live blocks from restaurants, fast food, service stations and grocery stores. There was no supervisor on our job, no communication.
Description of Work: We hired Irwin Brothers Remodeling to help us renovate our old house. They installed 2 steel jacks under the house and jacked up the floor to try to level it. They removed small amounts of old wood flooring and replaced with plywood, they removed plaster from one wall (approximately 15' long), removed old 2 x 4 framing and replaced with 2 x 6's, removed small section of drywall from living room ceiling on the lower level of the house. On the main floor in the house, they framed 4 small door openings, installed plywood sub floors in the pantry and added new ceiling joist. On the upper level, they framed 2 small closets, added a few fire blocks, added 3 ceiling joist and sistered a couple of floor joist. Irwin did NO finish work. All work took place in a 6' x 18' area. Almost all walls were open before they started, all ceilings were open. They removed old studs and replaced with new larger studs...built saw horses, removed 5' x 7' section of vinyl flooring.

Response from IRWIN BROTHERS REMODELING
IRWIN BROTHERS REMODELING DID DEMOLITION IN ORDER TO REFRAME REAR SUPPORT WALL WITH PROPER FOOTINGS, SUPPORT BEAMS AND POST. WE HAD TO REBUILD ENTIRE BACK WALL OF THE HOUSE 30 FT. TALL AND 30 FT. WIDE AND FLOOR SYSTEM (THREE STORIES) 8 FT. BY 40 FT. AREA. WE ONLY GOT THE FRAMING STAGE COMPLETED BECAUSE WHEN IT WAS TIME TO BRING IN THE ELECTRICIAN AND PLUMBER TO DO THE NEXT STEP, THE MEMBER DID NOT WANT TO HAVE THE WORK DONE THEY HAD SPECIFIED. THE MEMBER RELEASED US OF OUR DUTIES AND HIRED WHO SHE WANTED (WHICH WAS FINE WITH ME) BUT REFUSED TO PAY OUR FINAL INVOICE. SHE DID NOT PAY THE DRYWALL CONTRACTOR HIS FINAL PAYMENT EITHER. HE WAS CONCERNED ABOUT THE MEMBER DAMAGING HIS REPUTATION LIKE SHE IS TRYING TO DO TO US. WE NEVER COMPLETED OUR CONTRACT FOR $150,000.00. THROUGHOUT HER REPORT THE MEMBER TRIES TO MINIMIZE THE AMOUNT OF WORK WE DID. HAD WE NOT SUCCESSFULLY COMPLETED THE FRAMING PORTION OF THE JOB, SHE WOULDN'T HAVE BEEN ABLE TO PROCEED WITH FINISHING. TO READ HER VERSION CAUSES ME GREAT DISAPPOINTMENT, I WOULD NOT RECOMMEND ANY CONTRACTOR TO WORK FOR HER. IT IS ONE LIE AFTER ANOTHER. SHE COMPLAINS THAT I GOT A PERMIT FOR THE CONTRACT AMOUNT. THIS IS REQUIRED BY THE CITY OF BIRMINGHAM. SHE COMPLAINED ABOUT US ORDERING A PORT A LET AFTER WE REMOVED THE 100 YEAR OLD DRAINS AND SUPPLY PIPES IN OUR WORK AREA, AND SAID OUR CREW SHOULD HAVE GONE TO THE FAST FOOD RESTAURANTS, SERVICE STATIONS, OR GROCERY STORES IN THE AREA TO USE THE BATHROOM. DID SHE EVER DO THE MATH ON THIS? THREE OR FOUR MEN LEAVING THE JOB, THREE OR FOUR TIMES A DAY, TO USE THE POTTY WOULD HAVE COST MORE IN TIME THAN THE PORT A LET RENTAL. THE MEMBER TOLD ME THAT ALL THE OTHER CONTRACTORS SHE INTERVIEWED RECOMMENDED US - NOT THE YELLOW PAGES. THE MEMBER WROTE THAT I DID NOT MANAGE HER JOB. I WAS ON THE JOB SITE EVERYDAY, SOMETIMES TWICE. THE MEMBER WAS NEVER THERE, SHE WOULD COME AFTER 4 PM. HER EXCUSE WAS THAT SHE HAD TO BABY-SIT HER DAUGHTER'S CHILD. OUR LEAD CARPENTER WOULD HAVE TO CALL TO GET HER TO COME BY WHEN HE NEEDED A QUESTION ANSWERED WHICH WAS VERY RARE. COLLECTING A DOWN PAYMENT IS A STANDARD IN OUR INDUSTRY. THE MEMBER WARNS YOUR READERS TO NEVER GIVE A CONTRACTOR A DOWN PAYMENT, AND THAT IS THE USUAL WAY BUSINESS IS DONE. I HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HONEST WITH THE MEMBER. SINCERELY, PAUL E. IRWIN
