In spite of the mediocre rating on Angie's List I decided to call these people as a third estimate for the move. Spoke with the man on the phone and asked if he could send someone to look at our stuff and give me an idea of the cost. He said since it was the end of the month (I called him on the 20th) he was too short handed to send someone and he'd "guesstimate" on the phone. Which he did. In two seconds after two questions: How far between houses and did I live in a 3 bedroom house? He was not interested in how much or how little stuff we were moving. He said, "It'll be at least a thousand dollars". I insisted on telling him what we had. Guess what? It will be at least a thousand dollars. With that much up front before he loads, stopping midway through to refigure what the rate will be exactly and possibly more money then. In cash. He told me he had great ratings with the BBB and I told him his ratings were less than stellar on Angie's List. At that time he proceeded to trash the people who gave him a bad rating. They were "crazy" and "didn't really have the money to move. They should have moved themselves." That was enough for me. If I want fly by night weirdos I can go pm Craigslist.
Description of Work: Called for an estimate. He was so squirrely on the phone I knew I didn't want him to move my stuff.

They don't have a fancy moving van or fancy uniforms, but the owner was with them the entire time and they had me moved in within 3 hours at a very reasonable price. They quoted me less than the bigger companies and did a very good job!
Description of Work: Moved from my VERY hard to reach Southside apartment to a house with many steps.

He said that driving time accounted for an hour and that it was not possible to estimate the amount of time that it would take to unload the hutch and chest of drawers, but that he would refund any amount that was over. I told him that I thought that the hour drive time seemed excessive since the total estimated time was 23 minutes. Phil ?explained? to me that they had to drive slower on the highway with the truck, thus accounting for the longer drive time. According to Phil?s story, the average miles per hour that they would have had to have been driving (even taking into account stopping 14 minutes for gas fill-up) to travel 18.5 miles in one hour would be slightly more than 20 miles per hour?this is on Interstate 65!!! I told Phil that I thought that 1 ? hours for this job seemed reasonable (given my observation of the actual work time and participation in the drive time). He told me that unless I handed over $320 that he would not unload the rest of the furniture. He again ?explained? to me that it was ?simple math.? This was not simple math ?it was Phil?s math. Phil got belligerent and kept repeating that it was simple math. He further made the observation that I got a good deal on my furniture, and the cost of moving that he was demanding was around the same amount, and, furthermore, that I should be happy that I was getting such a good deal. I was so flustered I called my husband and asked him to bring me home some money to pay this man in order to get my furniture and be rid of him. I told Phil that my husband was on the way home and would be bringing the money to pay him. I also asked him if he wanted the money that I had ($195?the amount I expected to pay plus a tip). He took the money, but informed me that he would not continue to move me until he had the money. Rain was imminent, but he insisted on holding to his ground. He even went so far as to go out to his truck and lock it up. My husband got home and paid Phil an additional $125. The movers brought in the rest of the furniture. It probably took 5 minutes. When Phil presented me with the final bill, it was no surprise that the total actually came to exactly $320. Phil explained to me that he took 14 minutes off for the gas fill-up time and 5 minutes to explain the policies to me?voila, 2.63 hours @ $120 according to his simple math adds up to $320. It really does not, but I do have the receipt Phil gave me to prove it. I believe that Phil had in mind what he wanted to get paid, sized me and my situation up, and held my furniture for ransom. On hindsight, I wish I would have called the police. This was definitely a most unpleasant experience, and I would not recommend his services to anyone (even with reservations). The deceitful practices of this company are unconscionable. If it takes 1.63 hours according to Phil?s estimate to load and unload 4 pieces of furniture, it is hard to imagine how they can stay in business?except through inflation of costs and unseemly practices.
Description of Work: I used Discount Movers (located at 210 Lorna Road; Suite 128; Hoover, AL 35216) on June 15, 2010. I hired them to pick up some furniture (china buffet and hutch, chest of drawers, and an end table) that I purchased at the Salvation Army Thrift Store (2741 John Hawkins Parkway also in Hoover) on June 12, 2010. The store’s policy is that items must be picked up within three days after purchase, so it was necessary that I find movers who could accommodate that deadline. I contacted several movers, including the top-rated “Changing Spaces”, but they were unavailable to meet that deadline. I spoke with Phil (the owner) at Discount Movers on Monday, June 14th and he informed me that they were available to pick up and deliver the furniture the next day. Phil informed me that the rate would be $120 per hour and that “because of the economic downturn that they only accepted cash.” At that time we estimated that it would take approximately an hour and a half for the job, including drive time (from their office to the Thrift Store and then from my home back to their office—the time to drive from the Thrift store to my home was not considered drive time, but rather on the job real work time). Of note (according to Mapquest), the distance from Discount Movers to the Thrift Store is 3.6 miles with an estimated travel time of 8 minutes, and the distance from my home in Homewood, AL to Discount Movers is 10.5 miles with an estimated drive time of 15 minutes. This is a total estimated drive time of 23 minutes. This would leave 67 minutes to load and unload the furniture (33.5 minutes for four pieces of furniture for each load/unload). When I spoke with Phil on the Monday before the move, he asked me to call him the next day at 10:30 as a prompt.I called as requested and he informed me that they would be able to meet me at the Thrift store in approximately an hour and that he would call me when they were about half an hour away. I went to the Thrift store and as promised, Phil called me to let me know he was on the way. He and his two man crew arrived as promised. They loaded up the chest of drawers (which the Thrift store movers had already placed at the front door), the hutch, and the end table (including positioning and securing them in the truck). This took approximately 15-20 minutes. They had only the buffet to move to the truck when I left so that I could arrive at home and put my dogs out. It was nearly forty minutes since I left the store before I decided to call them since they had not yet arrived. Phil told me that they had to stop to get gas and that they would subtract the time from my bill. When they arrived at the house, the two movers brought in the buffet and the end table. This took approximately 5 minutes. Phil then requested that I pay him $320. I was quite stunned by this request and I told him that that seemed like more than the time spent on the job.

I arranged the move by phone and they showed up the next morning at the time they said they would, with a crew of 4 men and a supervisor. While the first piece was handled by two men, the other two unpacked and moved the second piece. Both pieces were moved into the house and put together very quickly, with no damage to the cabinet or the tight areas they had to move through. I was very impressed with the entire crew, who were courteous and worked quickly. The supervisor discounted the charge because they didn't use up the hour minimum due to the short time from their office and the short duration of the work. I would highly recommend this company.
Description of Work: I had received a large china cabinet by truck shipment. It was in two sections, both of which were very heavy. Although I usually try to do this type of moving myself with the help of friends and relatives, I decided to pay for a mover to do it because of the weight and size of the pieces. They had to bring the cabinet from my driveway up a few stairs into the house and put the top section on the bottom one. They quoted me an hourly rate of $155, but that was for 4 men instead of the 2 that other movers quoted. They had a minimum charge of 1 hour (including travel time from their office) rather than the two hours minimum or additional time for travel that other companies quoted. Considering that there would be 4 men and they would charge only for actual travel time, it was by far the best rate.
