Our family has a rental property that was originally built in the 1920's and added onto around 1960.After the last renters moved out and clean-up was accomplished it was apparent that extensive repairs would be required before it could be rented again. To start the process of evaluation of repair cost vs demolishing cost we started with the foundation, we called AFS. Mr. Rathman (AFS Foundation Specialist) arrived at the exact time that he was supposed to. He did a complete walk-around of the house pointing problems and explaining their impact on the foundation. He did a complete walk-through of he house interior again pointing out problems and explaining their impact on the foundation. He explained that the foundation of the house was in two parts, one half was concrete slab and the other half being pier and beam. He explained the different approaches both required in order to stabilize the total foundation. He explained that the crawl space for the pier and beam did not provide enough room to get under the house and evaluate the condition of that part of the foundation. He told me that the flooring over the pier and beam would have to be removed in order to gain enough access to evaluate and estimate the cost to repair. He explained that the removal of the flooring in order for AFS to develop a cost estimate would in itself cost around $500. He did not try to "sugar coat" the problem/solution with a high priced estimate that would take care of the problem. He told me that once the foundation was stabilized the other repairs could be started. He also explained that he could not provide cost estimates for those repairs but they should not be under estimated. After some deliberation with my family, I told Mr. Rathman that we would not require a cost estimate for the repair of the foundation as we were going to demolish the house. I sincerely appreciated Mr. Rathman's straight forward approach in explaining the problem and what would be required in order to repair it. The information he provided helped our family make the decision to demolish the house. I recommend AFS without reservation.
Description of Work: Responded to my request for an evaluation of a foundation of an older house at 203 Hurricane Creek Road Gurley, Alabama. I also asked for an estimate for repairs needed.

My concrete driveway and sidewalk was cracking and starting to sink in places. I called AFS and everything went terrific. Set up appointment time for Philip Slate to come out and look at my problem. He came out measured driveway and gave me a quote to Poly Level and fill in voids underneath driveway and sidewalk.. We set up a date for them to come out and perform the work. From that day forward I understood everything about what they were going to do and how they were going to do it. Lawrence and another gentleman showed up and completed their work on the day specified. They were on time and very professional. Before the company deposited the check a couple of weeks later, their secretary called and ask if I was satisfied with the work performed. I must say that this company is top of the line. Everyone involved were very professional, courteous, and knew what they were doing. Their product is lifetime warranteed and I was told that if I had any more problems to just give them a call. I would definitely use this company again. I am a very satisfied customer. Thanks AFS.

Only disappointment was that the contractor did not leave a "finished" look. After inserting the piers they left a big pile of dirt. A stone boarder I had was also not replaced.

It went very well. Philip provided a proposal in a very professional and kind manner. He is a truely intelligent professional in his field and it was a pleasure working with him. He showed up on time and was very cordial. August 8 came and Lawrence and his co-worker came out and done their job as planned. They were on time. They too are true professionals in their field and a pleasure to work with as well. When finished, they cleaned up as if they were never here. A couple of weeks later, AFS called me with a follow up. AFS is a company you can depend on with true professionalism and I highly recommend them. Their web address is www.afsrepair.com and their phone number is 1-800-768-0790. Thanks AFS He gave me a quote for the work to be performed and we set up a date for them to come out and perform the work The work was complete on August 8 as we agreed
Description of Work: Philip Slate came out and provided proposal for sealing cracks in concrete driveway and sidewalk. Poly level cracks in driveway and sidewalk. ( lift where concrete has cracked and sunk.) He measured the driveway and explained the process so I would know what to expect. Lawrence and his co-worker came out on August 8 and drilled holes on each side of the cracks and filled in the voids in the foundation underneath the concrete, and poly level sunken cracks in driveway and sidewalk.

As you can see from the above problem I had done everything imaginable to stop the humidity in the home..This crawl Space problem is everywhere. People dont realize there is a solution to this problem. I even placed 5 damp rid bags throughout the home and had 2 Trane A/C put in. The A/C is only good for pulling out a certain amount of humidity and ours was doing all it could. So in summary this is what I had done to stop the humidity. 1) placed 6 ml poly from end to end of crawl space 2) purchased dehumidifer to pull water out 3) purchased 2 new Trane A/C and 4) placed damp rid bags throughout the home. None of this worked...I was gone for a week and the smell upon entering the home was stunning. Metal was rusting and meldew was forming on cabnits. Something had to be done...I called my Trane A/C manager and he told me I had to seal the home. I called AFC and they came out within the next week. They measured the complete crawl space and recommended placing 20 ml poly not only from end to end of the crawl space but up the walls and around any wires pipes or anything else that could bring in water or outside air. They have run this plastic up the wall and completely sealed the entire crawl space. They also put drainage pipes under the plastic to pull any water that might seeping in. There is also a large dehumidifer that runs directly to the sump pump along with the drainage pipes form directly to this sump pump...the sump pump then drains any fluid directly out of the crawl space... What do we have now...one week later my in house dehumidifier is running at 40% humidity and I dont even empty this every day. The damp rid bags are now empty. This happened by the second day. You will be shocked how well these people do their job. $11,000 is a lot of money. But there is no one better. The job is done right the first time. I didnt want to spend this amount of money and then it still not work...the crew came out completely cleaned out the crawl space and carried it off both days...this is a 2 day operation. You never see the crew. When you do they are polite and professional. They are under your home sealing up the crawl space..they got here by 8:30 and didnt leave till 7p. The salesman in the beginning will give you a catalogue that will completely show you what your crawl space looks like and what and reason you are experiencing this probem. If nothing else get this catalogue. Read it thourghly and you will see this is no gimmic. These people call several times the next week to insure you are happy with the work...The saleman is not pushy...This is completely up to you.. As you can see I did evrything that is possible to stop the moisture in my home. There is no short cut and you cant do this yourself..they have been doing this for over 20 years. If you want the job done right. If you want to stop the smell and humidity in your home call AFS. You will not be disappointed. This humidity can also cause illness, mold and meldew...STOP it today..call AFS... I am 100% satisfied with the professional manner everyone at AFS showed...They make sure you are 100% satisfied with the job they do for you...
Description of Work: We purchased a beautiful home on 7 acres. The problem is like most homes built before 2000 is that they are built on a crawl space. The crawl space is approx 3 ft high and dirt. Actually this is in the builders code. To make air flow through the crawl space there are spacer holes cut into the foundation at the front end and a fan on the back end. The theory is this pulls the dead air through the crawl space. BUT this is not what happens. The fan does pull air through the vents but the air is hot. When the hot air comes into the basement the Relative Humidity (RH) changes drastically. Condensate starts to form as the hot air comes down into the crawl space. If its a hot summer day with high RH the humidity under your space starts dripping into the dirt. Soon the foul air starts permeating up into the home causing mold, meldew and high humidity. I purchased a dehumdifer 70 pints and also spread 6 ml poly from one end of the crawl space to the other..the dehumidifer pulled 140 to 175 pints of water a day out of the house. This was not enough.. When it rained water would stack up along the seams of the house and cause more humidity stench in the home...AFS sealed all of this...story below..

I was told they do retaining walls and numerous other things. I needed a retaining wall replaced. I had to call back and ask for the owner because I never received a phone call back from the representative that was supposed to have scheduled an appointment with me to meet them. A representative called me back after I complained and I met with him. He acted very arrogant and seemed he didnt want to get his hands dirty. I thought it may have just been me. He told me after I showed him what needed to be done that he didnt have a "warm and fuzzy feeling about the job." I asked him what did he suggest. He went on to tell me that he was going to get with his engineer and he would get back with me the following Tuesday. (This was a Friday). Tuesday came and went. I heard nothing from him. Wednesday afternoon I called AFS back and told them what had happened. She contacted one of the owners and he called me right back. She assured me they do not do business like that. He drove to my house that same day while I was at work and called me and left a message that they would not be able to do the job but he needed to talk to me and discuss this with me. He was going to tell me what I needed to do. I called him and left a message asking him to please call me back because the retaining wall that is holding my patio up has cracked all the way down the middle and my patio now has detached from my house! He didnt even bother to return my call. And keep in mind he is one of the owners! I would NEVER recommend them to do ANY work of any kind!

They were prompt. Their service is excellent - they did extra tasks upon request. They are friendly and knowledgeable. As far as I know the product is working correctly. It improved the overall comfort of the home. Note: If you do purchase a dehumidifier remember you have to change filter every 6 months-- or pay Service Dept. to do it. This is not for old folks!

It was a good experience. The man who came out to look it over and provide the quote told us that they were about 3 weeks out on schedule and it ended up being 6 weeks out on schedule so the scheduling was further out than we had anticipated. The man who came out was punctual however, the schedule that he told us ended up being twice as long.

The workers were professional. Showed up on time. Explained every step along the way. They dug holes with a backhoe, dug down to solid rock, installed the piers, jacked up the back of the house where it was sagging, and backfilled holes, spread seed to complete job. The workers were fast and completed the job to my greatest satisfaction. It took two days and their work is guaranteed for life. I would use this company again. Their prices are competitive with other companies.

We moved into our newly built house in May 2012 and had problems with water since day one. After trying all sorts of solutions (mainly using hydraulic cement and painting with Xypex), we needed to get a better and final solution. We called three different service providers. One never called back. The second one asked for follow-up information twice and then never answered any phone calls again. AFS was the only provider that followed through. Their office is in Birmingham so neither the salesperson nor the men performing the service were local. However, we were told that they are in the area at least once a week. The salesman provided a quote and a drawing and explanation of what would be done. He called a couple of times as we were making up our minds and offered to answer any questions or concerns we had. The work was done over two days. The men cleaned up as well as possible after the work was done. The water leakage was stopped as of that last day. One and a half months later, there is still no sign of water in the basement. Our only complaint is that we had a concern later that week and twice called the Birmingham office. It was Friday afternoon and no one was available. We were promised a call back and that never happened. Our concern went away so we didn't try again, however, they made no contact with us in response to our calls. There is a lifetime warranty on the work so we have some confidence in the work because of that, but we weren't very happy that they never called back.

I called AFS to set up an appointment for an estimate to waterproof my basement. An appointment was set up during that phone call. I was called to verify appointment for estimate before hand by a representative named Michael. He was on time and very knowledgable. We set up another appointment to install the system. The estimated time to complete the job was two days. It only took one. The crew was on time and explained everything they were going to do. I also had a blocked drain right outside the entry to my basement door that they tied into the pump system. The job was done on January 8th, 2013. On January 10th it started raining and didn't stop for over a week straight. My basement stayed dry through all of it. Needless to say, I am very pleased with the job AFS did.

We met with an AFS rep on 7/13/12 to assess an external crack in our brick outside our garage. The rep was punctual and professional and showed us a crack on an adjacent wall and explained that our foundation had moved. The agreed upon repair would involve the installation of 4 helical piers to support and stabilize the foundation. We were quoted a price of $4000.00 ($1000.00 per pier). The rep told us that they have a set price which makes it easier for them and that some jobs they make money and some they don't. Work began on 07/26/12 with a crew of 3 digging through our garage floor and 1 pier was dug outside between the garage door. After 2 days of jackhammering in our garage, the foreman informed us that they were going to stop work and check with their boss because our footing was thicker than most and it was taking longer than usual to dig through. Over the weekend I received a call from Scott the original rep we met with who informed us that we had 3 options: 1. cover up the holes in the garage and just pay for the 1 pier that was dug from the outside and completed. 2. Continue the work in the garage @ $200.00/hr for the jackhammering. 3. Hire a contractor to move our main electrical line so they could dig from the outside. We went with option 2 because we wanted the problem fixed and didn't want to hire a contractor (after all once a 4 foot deep hole is in your garage you have no choice but to keep going). Digging began again on Wednesday August 1 and was completed on Friday August 3. We were informed on Friday August 3 @ approximately 11:00 AM that the crew had dug through our sewer line. The foreman came to our door and told us that they had dug thru it and told us to not flush the toilet until they could fix it......approx 2 hours. They never came back to tell us it was fixed. In fact, they went to lunch @ 1:00 PM and I went outside and the sewer line was not fixed. Finally about 5 PM I went outside and confirmed that the sewer line had been fixed. It was very inconvienent for us because we had out of town guests and had to tell them not to flush. They finished the last piers on Friday and told us they would be back on Monday to fill in the hole. On Monday morning I received a call from the foreman explaining that the "wanted to let it dry out" and they wouldn't be back on Monday but would be back before the end of the week. Finally on Friday afternoon, I called Scott back to verify when anyone would come to fill in the hole. I was informed that someone would be to our house within 2 hours. One guy did show up and informed us that he was supposed to have help but that the other guy is a "no show" and that he would try his best. He worked from 3:00 PM till 6:00 PM but was unable to finish. He told us that someone would come on Saturday to pour the concrete and he added that if the guy didn't show up on Saturday he would be fired. Well, no one showed up and again I called on Monday to speak with Scott. He called us back and again told us someone would be there within 2 hours. A crew of 2 finally showed up and completed the work on Monday August 13.
Description of Work: AFS installed 4 helical piers attached to the foundation to stabilize it and prevent further movement.
