I talked to Russ on Thursday about having him come out and give me a quote for excavating and a retaining wall. He told me he would be in Eagle River on Saturday and could come over at 08:45 am. I woke up early to be available and waited 2 hours for him to show up, he never did and never called to advise he would be late. When I called him 2 hours later to find out if he was coming, he asked me if I was available in 20-25 minutes, but didn’t mention we had an appointment 2 hours before that. He got offended when I mentioned I had been available all morning since we had an appointment 2 hours ago. He then said something came up he wasn’t going to go into and told me this wasn’t a good way to start off. He then told me he was going to pass and hung up on me! A simple apology or acknowledgement that he left me hanging for two hours would have been sufficient for me, but apparently that was too much for him to handle! I’m glad I got to see his true colors before I hired him for a job, clearly he has terrible customer service based on my brief interaction with him.

Description of Work: "If I used this contractor again I would:1) Write up a detailed contract myself; he uses emails as a ""contract"". 2) Write down a price for all parts of the project - broken down as much as possible so that what doesn't get done doesn't get paid for. 3) I would always be there when his workers are there. 4) Most importantly I would give him a time frame to do the work. A reasonable time, but otherwise he has his workers there a couple of hours a day to make it look like work is happening. The project time drags out for months. He moves equipment in and out constantly rather than just stay 2 weeks and finish it. 5) He needs to certify that his workers are actually capable of installing the special pavers that he tries to sell you from the lower 48."

He was excited when he saw what kinda of project we wanted. His quote was AWESOME considering the work. He came through and did the job it did take longer than expected. When I called he gave advise on the grass, and sometimes stopped by to check how it was coming in. We needed him to come back and redo the level of the top soil, and he was a week behind but he came and did it. The end result came out wonderful and the price was really good.

They try to do the work right but they are NOT engineers and refuse to listen to the customer. What is discussed and agreed upon gets changed by Fritz and nothing gets written down. Our "retaining wall" consists of dead trees staked in place and a thin plastic layer of straw to "take hold". I wanted to hire an engineer but was assured they were engineers. After 1 year the wall is already shifting and looks horrendous. The main concern was drainage in the back. Water sits in puddles and after a year we have moss and soggy ground instead of lawn. No drainage was placed as we asked. The front is the biggest disaster. To look at it looks great. Even after having the as built and verbally insisting they keep the wall back 15 ft to allow for utility easement Fritz decided it wasn't necessary and built a several ton rockery and berm over the utilities (while we were out of state). We were out of town and the last comment made to us was "consider it done". We are in violation with our HOA and utilities. Fritz took it upon himself to notify the Borough and the utilities to get their "okay". They hold him liable. We are now having to spend another $25k to move the berm and put a drain in the back. Oh I forgot to mention the 12" culvert (no holes) placed under our front lawn to drain water out to the Borough ditch. Really, a culvert??? We are having that removed as well. The front lawn has a 24" slope to it and a lumpy bumpy mess. Fritz is not the owner, his wife Jenny is. Beware if you cross her (like trying to hold back funds until the job is done right) you will hear some foul mouth yelling. We were accused if "micromanaging" because we stayed home to watch the circus of workers come and go leaving their mess everywhere, using our tools and making themselves at home in the new shed we had built. Yep, moved right in, grinding mud into the floor. One day there were chinese noodles all over the driveway. I'm sure the good intentions are there but they just drop off workers with no experience and expect them to know what to do with no supervision. It took them 3 months to do a 2 week job. Besides Wolfe Homes this has been the second biggest mistake we've made in hiring "professionals". What ever happened to honesty, integrity and listening to the customer. It's all about money now. Don't waste it on Rock Ridge Services!!! The address of the job is [member information removed] in Wasilla.
