The company owner and his son showed up at about 1PM. They dug a very big hole that was full of very wet mud. They had to have a man in the hole at times with a shovel and that was very dangerous. After the leak was found, they repaired it with a large clamp. They then filled in the hole and leveled it out. Tony and Titus Gumley are very skilled at what they do. Watching them work that excavator was very inspiring. They did a great job and were willing to come on a snowy winter day. I did learn a very important lesson about doing business with Gumley Excavation. You need to get a written estimate for the cost of the job. When I received the bill, it gave a price and just said, "repaired water line." I asked for a detailed bill and was surprised to see that I was charged $750 to get the excavator there and back to the site. I was also charged for about 2 1/2 more hours of labor than they were there. I know that it doesn't seem like a lot, but at $100 an hour, I thought it was a lot. When I questioned what I thought were overcharges, I was told that the extra labor was to get the excavator out of storage. I would have understood that, except I was charged $750 to move 1 piece of equipment and was charged $600 to move 3 pieces of equipment on a job in August. We thought that the much larger charge should have covered getting the equipment out of storage. After a few letters back and forth to Mr. Gumley, he threatened to sue us, so we paid the extra $250 and decided to never call or use any of his other businesses again. When I have been asked about my experience with Gumley, I have said that he does a fantastic job digging and filling in a hole, but whatever you do, Get A Written Estimate.
Description of Work: Gumley Excavation dug up a waterline that was leaking. The hole in the driveway was about 10 feet around and about 10 feet deep. The leak was found and a clamp was installed. The hole was refilled and leveled out.
