In their defense, the weather didn't allow painters to get off to a good start, however once the weather did improve, it was hard to get them to show up on the job site. Too many personal problems, and constant issues that Jonathan was trying to deal with and made continual excuses for. He seldom showed up on site, other than to show his "partner" how to do something. We found out later that instead of working on our property, he was out hustling up new jobs. Jonathan prepared a contract for us on Affordable Painting, LLC letterhead, but after I wrote a check for the down payment, I was asked to re-write my check to a new company. Which turned out to be a handyman service, not a painting contractor. The check was cashed immediately, however they didn't show up for another couple of weeks. When they were there, they would stay only a few hours here and there. And then, sometimes due to weather, not show up again for several days. In the meantime, they left our home "papered and taped" around every window and doorway, other than ONE exit for over two weeks. With the moisture and heat, the adhesive from the tape remained behind on several surfaces, and instead of being removed properly, it was just painted over. Promises and guarantees of quality and completion were made, and ultimately only half-assed attempts were provided. For another two weeks, we locked up all of Jonathan's equipment in our garage, just in fear that he might have abandoned the job and was not coming back. Made several attempts to reach him via text messages and phone calls that were ignored. He later stated that his phone was not working, his email was not working, etc. When we saw him in the grocery store one evening, talking on his phone, he saw us and immediately turned his back to us, while continuing to talk on his phone. We were charged for a professional job, but received only amateur work, from a "new partner" that was giving it his best effort, but just didn't have the experience. He also brought along cousins, brothers, etc to help out - but again, no experience. What was supposed to take a week or two in early June, took weeks and weeks on end with little performance. Finally "finished" with them during the first week of August. Jonathan was satisfied with "good enough", instead of what was verbally promised during our initial meeting. When Jonathan didn't include everything that was discussed during our first meeting in the actual contract, he used that against us and said he never discussed it at all. We caught him in several lies, and he became very defensive and agitated. He stated that I told him I didn't want "Taj Mahal". I was referring to paint quality, and told him I didn't need top of the line Sherwin Williams, but wanted middle of the line Sherwin Williams, due to the price difference. Then he stated I told him I just wanted a quick and easy paint job, because I was selling the house. In actuality, I told him what I was hoping to have filled in, repaired, re-stained, etc., as I was planning to sell the house in a couple of years, and I wanted it to look nice. He twisted everything I said to him around to his own benefit, and then would start yelling and becoming defensive when I told him he was lying. He took copious notes during our initial meeting, however couldn't produce any notes to refer to when we questioned him. We will now have to go back and finish up several areas of paint and stain ourselves; while they took a discount on the balance we owed them of roughly $700, it will cost that much or more to have everything repaired and finished properly. We could not stand the thought of having them on our property for one more day... and we basically paid to get rid of them.
Description of Work: In the middle of May, I was told that Affordable Painting, LLC had been in business for several years, licensed, bonded, etc. I didn't vet Jonathan Critchfield properly enough and discovered after several complaints of non-performance that the business was lost, LLC was not valid, no license, insurance, or bonding in place. Jonathan sent over his "new partner" who had never painted a home before to complete the job, then argued over quality, details, and threatened to file a lien if he was not paid. Both parties signed a contract on Affordable Painting, LLC letterhead, that they were not even legal to sign.

His original estimate was way under what the actual charge was. We wanted to have the ceiling painted a different color than the walls, and the price to do that was just about double. We didn't know that until we got the bill. They said if the wall was a different color than the ceiling, it was called an accent wall. Their work was very good, but we thought they were a bit sneaky with the pricing. We will not use them again.
