John was very professional and friendly. You could tell that he cared about our needs and our property. He definitely knows his business, and expertly excavated and replaced our sewer line with minimal damage. The slight damage to our driveway was immediately taken care. We are grateful for John's Excavation and would recommend his services to anyone.

He dug it up and never found the leak. The work he performed was fine, but the next day he handed me a bill 50% over what he quoted. I could understand the increased price if he did more than what he quoted, But in the end he actual did less work than quoted. Don't trust him one bit.

Description of Work: John had to excavate my back yard directly against the corner of my house so that the sewer line riser to the septic tank could be repaired, as it had come disconnected due to a frost heave last winter and debris was in the horizontal line causing backups. He and his son did just an amazing job for us - they were on time, explained everything they were going to do, they got the job done quickly and were very careful with my lawn so that as little damage occurred as possible. His price was a bit more than I wanted to pay (and more than other contractors) but I had heard that he did high quality work from another contractor I use and trust, so I went with him. I was glad I did and highly recommend him to anyone that needs excavating work done.

Description of Work: John's Excavating repaired and replaced portions of my outdoor drainage pipe to the sewer. This involved getting excavating equipment down a difficult slope to my backyard and doing the job on uneven ground. The job was done in very little time. Unfortunately, I was not there to see it done. |My only negative (and the reason for the 'B' ratings is that they said they would photograph the installation before they buried it and email the photos to me and that did not happen. So not being on hand and not having photos I did not get "eyes on" the work.

Description of Work: Sept. 2009: Needed the foundation waterproofed, french drain and outdoor sump pump installed. John is an expert with a backhoe; the area on one side of the house was limited, but he didn't even scrape the siding. He did an excellent job with the foundation. However, he dug the hole for the sump pump too deep, at 8 feet instead of 5. The water table here is 5 1/2 feet. He said it was a problem for him, not me. Not true. Water pumped all winter, sometimes several times a day, flowing downhill under the fence, then freezing and causing an ice jam, which eventually jacked the fence. I had to unscrew the fence rails from the brackets to raise the fence, which wasn't easy since it was on a downslope and I was 78 at the time (and I'm a woman, I might add). When I tried to talk to him about it, he told me I just didn't like having water on my property. I have since had the pump raised about 2 1/2 feet, installed heat tape in the pipe and had the direction of the outflow changed so the water is channeled away from the fence.

Started the job without discussing it with the engineer and as a consequence the tank was placed so that it trespassed onto the utility corridor at the edge of the property line. Happily the engineer was able to get a waiver from the city otherwise the tank would have had to be removed and relocated. The bid that was submitted was prepared without having visited the work site and the material list was quite a bit off. The bid contained language that in effect said that it might be wrong and that he reserved the right to revise it and submit a bill that more accurately reflected the charges. In the final bill, there was $2000 more than the original bid. The language in the bid also indicated that we agreed we had no right to question any revisions. It is also pertinent that a bill of $150 for preparing the bid was originally submitted. You would be well advised to seek another excavating company.

I called to inquire about getting a bid. He agreed to visit the lot and prepare a bid, but also expressed some frustration that he gets lots of calls for bids, and after putting in the work, he sometimes doesn't even hear back from people. I recognized that is unfair, and offered to pay him 100 dollars for the bid, to be subtracted from the cost of the job if he got the work. After a subsequent phone call to try and arrange a time and further explain the scope of work requested, he determined my job would take more time than he had in his schedule (this was at the very end of the construction season). He apologized sincerely for not being able to do the work. This wasn't ideal, but much preferable to a contractor promising something they then can't deliver. He was very polite and professional in his dealings with me, and I would contact him again for work in the future.

The only good thing I can say about John's work is that he's a master with a backhoe. One side of my house is close to a fence, the distance barely wider than the bucket on his backhoe, and he did no damage at all to my house when excavating. However, the blue board he used to insulate the foundation is popping up as much as 6 inches in some places. In digging the hole for the sump pump on the other side of the house, he dug it down 8 feet. The water table where I live is at about 6 feet. At the time, he said that was a problem for him, but not for me. In the summer, that was true. The outfall from the drain pipe was downhill from my house, about 3 feet from a cedar fence. The pump activated every 1 1/2 to 3 hours, depending on the rain. Most of the water drained under the fence and onto my neighbor's property, which luckily was only mildly upsetting to my neighbor. And I was lucky when mowing the grass that the pump never activated when I was in that area. In the winter, however, ice built up under the fence, causing the fence to jack up. When the rails started to split from the force of the ice, I grabbed my power drill and went down to release the rails from the brackets that held them. Now, this sounds easy, but at the time I was 78 years old and squatting down to take the screws out was difficult, and it was even harder to get back up again since I was on very icy and sloping ground. However, the fence rails were able to slide up in the brackets, which allowed no further damage to the fence. Also, the drain pipe froze up in the winter, causing the pump to run continuously because the water had no place to go. My electric bill doubled one month before I knew I had a problem and I got it taken care of. John did send over a worker to raise the pump up 8 inches using a concrete block. He did this twice. It helped in that it didn't pump as often, but I still had problems in the winter. His answer when I called him to complain was that and quot; You just don't want water on your property.and quot; I have since had the pump raised up another 8 inches; had the the direction of the outflow changed and a ditch dug to allow for the water to flow properly; and had heat tape installed in the drain pipe. (This work was NOT done by John.) This is the first winter since the installation that I have not had a problem. Oh, and by the way, John called me a couple of weeks ago and wanted to come over to see how I took care of the problems. I briefly told him what I had done, but did not tell him he could come over. He is not allowed on my property.

The very best of the best are always busy. John's Excavating is at the top of that list. We had water in our crawl space. A french drain was the only solution. We contacted more than 6 companies to get an estimate. Two came to look. The one that did povide an estimate was vague, elusive and outrageous in price. Finally we found John,s Excavating. He explaind in detailed what was needed and what he was going to do. Work started promptly on time and was finished a day ahead of schedule. John took total control of the project, stating that "this is my reputation on the line". He is a true man of his word. I was extremely impressed by his extensive knowledge and experience. He knew what he was doing. The attention to detail on every aspect of the job showed his professionalism. He inspected and kept track of his workers. Roger and Rocky are no slackers. Both showed genuine concern for the job. Both took great pride in doing a good job. As with any project, there are the unexpected situations that pop up. John dealt with these with ease. For every problem, John had a solution. When it was all over and done with, I shook the hand of a truely honest man.
