As a stylish and durable alternative to traditional roof shingles, tile roofing boosts your home’s curb appeal and energy efficiency. If you’re considering replacing or installing this type of roof, one of the first things you’ll need to do is meet with a roofing contractor. To help you prepare for that conversation, we’ve created the following list of tile roof questions that a pro will likely ask.

Which Type of Tile Do You Want?

There are a variety of tile roofing materials, such as clay, concrete, terracotta, slate, and metal. There are also multiple styles, including flat, interlocking, and barrel tiles.

Each type of roof tile has its pros and cons—and the best option for you will depend on your budget, aesthetic preferences, and local climate. Your roofing contractor can walk you through the various materials and styles to find the right one for your home.

What’s the Current State of Your Roof?

Your roofing pro will consider the current condition of your roof to estimate how much work they’ll need to perform. If your roof is in decent shape overall but has damage in one section, your contractor may recommend a partial roof replacement. But if you have significant leaks, major storm damage, or other severe roof issues, you may need a complete roof replacement—which will take longer and cost more than a partial replacement.

When Would You Like This Project Completed?

The time to install a tile roof typically takes six to 12 days, but this timeline can vary depending on the roof’s size, weather conditions, replacement method, and other factors.

The time of year can also affect your project schedule. Roofing professionals are usually busiest in fall and spring—specifically, in March, April, and September—and often charge steeper prices during these seasons. You could save some money by scheduling your roof replacement during a quieter time (such as May or June).

Of course, you won’t have as much flexibility if your roof is badly damaged and requires urgent replacement. If that’s the case, you’ll need to ask your contractor how quickly they can get to work. (Heads up: There’s often an additional fee for emergency roof work.)

What’s Your Budget?

Your roofing contractor will create an estimate based on the specifics of your project. For reference, the average cost to install a tile roof ranges from $8,460 to $26,470, with most people spending around $17,460. Your total cost will vary based on multiple factors, including the roofing material and style, the size of your roof, and your location.

Is This Request Covered by an Insurance Claim?

Your homeowner's insurance might pay for a roof replacement if your roof was damaged by a covered event—such as hail, fire, wind, or a natural disaster. If you plan to submit a roof replacement claim to your insurance company, inform your contractor beforehand. You might also ask your roofer to join the insurance adjuster when they visit your property to assess the damage together and minimize future back-and-forths.
